View Full Version : Venoms fantasy project log

02-05-2007, 13:14
Hello there all, I am starting this log with my first warhammer fantasy army who are being prepared for a tournament in June.
I am building a Vampire Count army and this is what I have so far (I apologise in advance for poor photo quality as I am using a webcam, poor painting skills, poor spelling and the fact I have to wait til my turn on the computer to make further posts, I will reply and update as often as possible)

Firstly I have completed a regiment of zombies (I do have another just it is with my other half and only part painted at the moment)
This is my first rank, the standard bearer was awkward and kept loosing his arm, probably because I have to store them in a box and had no bubble wrap (until today when I stole a bit from a parcel my psychology teacher had delivered and he is now wrapped up nicely)
This is my second rank
third rank
fourth rank

the full unit
and some raisables.

I also have two of the three fell bats I am using, the third is coming from my partner when he gets home from university
The first fell bat

02-05-2007, 13:19
My second fell bat.
I have some bits on order and they should arrive next thursday.
Be honest with your comments, I know my painting is rubbish!
Thank you all for looking and I will update you as soon as possible after my new items arrive :skull:

I would love to give a fellow VC player some feedback but to be honest I can't see a single thing in any of your pictures. They are just blurry, dark shapes.

I know you said you only have a webcam but there are some things you can do to get better pictures.

1) Don't take pictures with the sunlight going into the camera, that is the way to get the worst pictures ever. The sunlight should shine on the models with the camera's back to the window.

2) Put something at the back of the models to block out the background so the camera can focus on the model and not your room.

3) Use some editing software to level the light and contrast levels in your pictures. Photoshop is great at this but if you don't have it there are some free ones like "The Gimp" that are just as good.

Do these 3 simple things and you will be able to get some feedback.

Good luck.

02-05-2007, 15:39
the blurry pic monster strikes again eh damn that fiend

02-05-2007, 15:41
Seriously. You can't use a crappy webcam for this :S

I'm not trying to be rude. I'd love to see them you know.

02-05-2007, 18:31
I will try to take some more pictures, although it it may be hard to get enough light but not have light behind it.

02-05-2007, 19:09
Ok, I have taken some more pictures, the light is further round so not shining so much on the models or in the background and there is a folder behind them to help the webcam focus, I hope they are better this time

If you have money, you can get a decent dig camera for like $50, like someone said, use something as a backdrop.

02-05-2007, 19:15
And now the fell bats
Fell bat 1

02-05-2007, 19:17
fell bat 2
unfortunately I have no photo editor and can't get one as me and my sister are on a download ban so as soon as possible I will get a decent camera and take some better pictures

02-05-2007, 19:21
If you have money, you can get a decent dig camera for like $50, like someone said, use something as a backdrop.

Unfortunately I dont have any spare money at the moment, I am paying for driving lessons and various other things, and I only get 44 a week, thats my EMA and my wages together, I also have various school trips and revision material to pay for. I will get a camera as soon as my wages go up in September, although I won't be earning as much as some people in the same job due to the fact women STILL get lower wages than men

03-05-2007, 01:26
I hear you on that one, venom...I've been taking some pics of my WIP Empire army with my webcam, fiddling with this and that, and finally they're starting to come out half right....at least some of the detail is visible, and you get a pretty good indication of what's going on. I figure with a little more trial and error, my webcam will be taking better pictures than some people's digitals(more on my work in a future project log...very soon).

That said, from what I can see of your models, they're coming along very nicely. Just fiddle with your cam and do the best you can. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

18-05-2007, 19:05
Hey all.
Got some more work done, however haven't had the chance to take pictures yet as I'm having a crisis atm, lost a lot of work that I need to submit to pass my GNVQ in ICT, I will get the pictures done asap and hopefully some more models as well. I'll update you as soon as I can.

22-05-2007, 12:43
'ello Venom :P

I can give you a hand with your pictures since I've got access to a decent camera at home: you just have to wait till I'm there. However, I did get a picture of your first Zombie unit the last time you were down, so I'll show it to the nice people for you :D

It's only the first rank though...consider it a sneak preview of her marvellous work!
I've seen her models first hand and I can tell you they're much better than she'd have you believe. She puts herself down far too much *glares*

We'll get some more pictures ASAP.

23-05-2007, 16:26
Hello there all, finally got some time to take photographs of the models currently complete.
this is the first of my necromancers
This is my second necromancer, I also have my 2 mounted necromancers built, waiting for me to have time to paint them

23-05-2007, 16:31
This is one of my dire wolves units
This is my second
And this is one wolf from the side.
I should have a banshee by tomorrow, and hopefully should have some more things soon.
As soon as possible I will give you another update, and I will say that MalusCalibur only says I'm good at painting so he doesn't upset me (well thats what I think anyway because my paintins rubbish!)
Take care all

26-05-2007, 18:18
I'm not going to turn your log into a debate over your painting skill Venom, so just accept that you're damn good for the stage you're at :D

Liking the Necromancers, as far as I can see. My only criticism would be the sword blades: they look a bit...off. Not quite sure what it is, I'll have to see them in person to make a proper judgement.

Keep up the good work, I expect to see the Banshee very soon!

26-05-2007, 18:29
Even though its hard to tell from thoose pics it looks like you have improved alot comparing the zombies to the Necromancers. THe skill level you are currently at (looking at the necromancers) is about the level of painting I were at when I was painting my Tomb Kings. And then I had been collecting Warhammer for 3 years allready, so if you are new you should be proud of your work and as I said earlier, as you are allready improving I bet that you have a lot of potential to become a great miniature painter.

28-05-2007, 11:41
it's good to see another Vampire gettin' around :D and putting up a project log.
if you don't mind me saying, you might get a better skin tone if you start experimenting with inks and washs. It should help to define the skin from the bone.

cheers, and good luck with the log:)

28-05-2007, 14:14
Just looked at them picsa gain and just noticed how the back rank of the zombies are comming up trough the ground! Thats really cool! Good job ;)

05-06-2007, 19:17
Thank you all for your kind words, sorry I haven't updated for a while, and sorry to say I wont have any more painting done until I can get the paints I need, just spent a week (and a small fortune) in Middelsborough and haven't had an EMA payment so have to wait until Saturday to get 2 weeks of wages (all 28 pounds of it) and I'll have an update as soon as I can after I get the paints I need. Take care all :skull:

12-06-2007, 23:44
Hello all, I have finished my Vampire Thrall and my Banshee, and have pictures on MalusCalibur's digital camera, so they are a lot better than the normal ones.
This is them from the front
and them from behind.
In the next couple of days I will be completing my first zombie regiment (the one previously pictured is actually my second) and my third fell bat.
I will update you all as soon as these are completed.

Alex Under
13-06-2007, 08:44
The banshee is great. As someone has said, use inks on the skin; a watered-down green, purple or flesh wash on the skin will make such an improvement, and not only is it easy to apply, it is very quick. Good luck on your project!

15-06-2007, 21:30
hello again all, I promised my other zombies, and here they are:
I discovered whilst doing these that dry brushing the rotting flesh paint over the chaos black undercoat was better than solid rotting flesh that I had been doing, and from this discovered dry brushing bleached bone over vermin brown was better than what I had been doing, so you will notice a few differences in the last few rows opposed to the front. I will be getting some better photographs of the previously posted models for you to see, although I personally dont own the camera so I can only get these pictures at MalusCalibur's.
I will post my new pictures as soon as I can.

14-07-2007, 18:32
Hello all. Sorry I haven't updated in a while, have been busy with psychology coursework and went to the Isle of Wight on a biology trip. I have painted my ghouls, but haven't got any pictures just yet, and I have ordered my knights and my last zombie regiment, they should be completed by next week.
I'll get pictures sorted as soon as possible.
Take care. :skull::skull::skull:

20-07-2007, 21:45
Hello all.
I have some good quality pictures of my wolves and necromancers, as well as having a picture of my ghouls.
Apparently my painting skills are equal to (or greater than) maluscaliburs, at least thats what he believes. What do you think?
My next models should be ready in the next few days and then I'll have my 1500 point army complete.
I played a game against maluscalibur this afternoon, and although he destroyed my entire army he claims it was harder than the last game we played, possibly because I actually managed to raise some zombies this time round and my banshee wasn't useless at screaming at people.
If there is anyone local to East Grinstead and fancies a game or two as practice message me and we can try to arrange something.
I'll be updating you all as soon as possible.

20-07-2007, 22:03
Don't forget your Spirit Hosts, darlin' :)

I made 'em but I'm sure you'll paint them superbly.

Maximus Lucifer
21-07-2007, 15:45
well the spirit hosts are...characterful "darlin" ;):D

23-07-2007, 03:00
lovely painting on the wolves! I also like the colors you used on your necromancers!

I'm so enjoying the headless horseman terrorizing that peasant! hahahaha

Can't wait to see it painted! ;)

27-07-2007, 17:59
I have painted my spirit hosts and my knights are made and painted. My zombies are currently being painted. Unfortunately I don't know when I'll get some pictures to show you all as my mother won't let me visit Maluscalibur until I've paid her back some money (bearing in mind I am borrowing another 185 to pay for more driving lessons) and as you know my webcam (and also, as I discovered recently, my digicam) dont have the required quality to show you my developments. Hopefully I will be able to work something out and get some good pictures soon.
Take care, :skull::skull::skull:

28-07-2007, 05:03
nice work venom! the level ur at in this short amount of time is probably what i was at after 3 or 4 years so just imagine in a few years how good you'll be :D
btw my fave models so far that u've done are the ghouls, i dunno why but I love them! can't wait to see more!

02-08-2007, 20:14
Hello all, I apologise for no photographic update, I still haven't made it to maluscalibur's to use the camera, and as for my zombies, at the moment I have the first 2 ranks complete, however as theres a lot of tidying to do in the pig sty (by which I mean the falling down danger house I live in) to make room for a lot of furniture from my grandfather's house as he's moving and can't take a lot with him.
I'll get the pictures as soon as I can.
Take care all :skull::skull::skull:

02-08-2007, 23:04
well im wainting for those zombies ms. venom... need inspiration for myself... v_v

03-08-2007, 04:29

I really like that Banshee of yours such a breath of fresh air from the all white I'm used to seeing. The Trall & Ghouls show remarkable advancement on your flesh tones, keep up the good work.

22-08-2007, 16:18
Hello all, sorry for the delay in getting these pictorial updates sorted, but I have finally got the promised pictures of my spirit hosts and black knights.

The Hosts MalusCalibur made for me, painted in a more traditional 'ghosty' fashion.

My knights are actually Empire Knightly Order knights with skeleton bits. The three that are 'aside' from the others are spares, since the unit I want to use is only five strong.

My zombies are unfortunately not yet finished, but hopefully I will have them done soon and will try and get you a decent picture of them before MalusCalibur goes back to uni.

I will update you as soon as humanly possible.
Take care :skull:

22-08-2007, 21:00
Coming along very, very nicely Venom! I look forward to your next update.

22-08-2007, 21:54
Love the spirit host, remind me of the ones I did for my undead. I also did the same for my black knights using empire knights but only made 2, might make me try them again...

09-09-2007, 18:14
Hello all, I'm really sorry but again there is no pictorial update, I'm back at college working hard, got to improve by a few grades to get straight onto the university course I want to do, and along side that I also have a lot of gardening and housework to get sorted for Saturday. If you're wondering why, it is my birthday party, although my actual birthday is Friday, so the booze will be flowing for a fair amount of time. Hopefully I will have my other zombie ranks painted shortly and will hopefully be getting pictures sorted during half term week, as I will probably be kicking Maluscalibur out of bed to make him go to lectures etc.
I will update you asap on my progress.
Take care all :skull::skull::skull:

19-09-2007, 20:43
I stumbled on this log by following a link ...

Venom, your painting is really good, and it seems to be improving with each unit that you paint ...

Consider me subscribed :)

21-09-2007, 15:42
:skull:I have a surprise for you all.
I went out, well sent mum out, to argos with 70 of my birthday money and got a new digital camera, and heres the pictures of the model MalusCalibur gave me for my birthday, it's a replacement for the 'Black Coach' but we call it the 'Black Chariot of Doom'
Hope you like it and I'll get some more models painted asap

22-09-2007, 09:25
Hi there,

some nice work. Havent seen Arkhan's chariot in a while. To The conversion looks a bit orky(as in 40k Orks).

22-09-2007, 11:07
Lovely painting on those spirit hosts. I also really like the ghouls and the characters.

My only real concern is the the basing. I think you should glue some fine sand on the areas where there is no grass. And may I suggest washing the skin of your zombies with a watered down colour that's darker than the base colour.

Great work :)

26-09-2007, 18:04
I have pics of my zombies and 2 more dire wolves, although they arent very good because teh sun was being uncooperative and decided to come out or hide behind clouds just as i took the pics so theyre a tad blurry.
my zombies
my wolves
hope you like them and il try to get better pics soon

15-10-2007, 18:58
good stuff :)

18-01-2008, 18:34
Quality work.
Keep it up, looking foiward to more pics :D

23-02-2008, 02:30
Hi there, all Venom followers.

Unfortunatley she has been embroiled in a rather hectic state of affairs just recently and has been cut off from computer and internet access, so she asked me to fill you all in.

She has been continuing to paint, having almost entirely completed her Vampire Counts and having made a start on..something new. Watch this space, she should be able to get pictures for you during the upcoming Easter holiday.

26-04-2008, 17:51
Hello all, unfortunately there are no pictorial updates as of yet, I am still away from my usual residence with no internet access. I should shortly be returning and will update properly then. I have a small 2nd army to show you as well as some vc repaints. I will be updating my vcs ready for a doubles tournament in July which is going to involve a nasty 2 vampire armies :D

24-07-2008, 20:38
Hello all, finally I have some pictorial updates, beginning with my vamps.
I was inspired by the armour of the blood knights in the new army book to revamp my black knights with some black laquered armour, which I hope you like.
Next to be seen to was my vampire on foot, just rebasing with my new theme and repainting with the original scheme, just tidier.
I then turned my hand to my necromancers, again using the original colours but tidying up and rebasing.

24-07-2008, 20:51
Next to be repainted were my spirit hosts, again the colours remain the same, just tidier and with the new base scheme.
The last pic for vc is a mounted vamp whos been painted for a while but never been viewed:

Thats all the vamps for now but I also promised another army, that army being wood elves. I wanted to do something different, instead of the normal spring, summer, autumn, winter themes you see, but at the same time wanted to incorpreate snow. After much deliberation, I decided to do an late winter/ early spring, around Febuary/March time when one of the most abundant colour in the woodlands is the beautiful blue of bluebells, this meant I could also incorperate snow as it is often still cold at this time of year, but the plants are fresh and 'waking from a long rest.'
The first models I got for my wood elves were dryads, I started with one box and ended up with three, totalling thirty six dryads, all, bar five (two painted greener as branchwraiths or branchnymphs and three that are currently unfinished) painted the same colours so I only photographed five as examples.

24-07-2008, 21:06
Next model I will show you is my lord/noble, I'm rather pleased how the hair came out, after experimenting with colours on my three standard wardancers pictured last in this post, with some direct order only wardancers.
Next is my spellweaver/spellsinger. At some point I will have to pin the horns of his cloak as the refused to stay glued, being a wizard I decided to give him blue hair to make him look slightly excentric as all good wizards should be.
Finally, the wood elf modles I am most proud of, my wardancers. After seeing some vain attempts at blonde and ginger hair that were unsuccesfull, I decided to give it a shot myself on the standard wardancers, also attempting a blue/black colour similar to mine. The fiddliest bit of the wardancers, however, was the talismanic tattoos, first was finding and area of skin large enough then painting the lines fine enough and accurate enough to make out the talismans.
Hope you like my new painting and look forward to your comments.

24-07-2008, 21:32
Liking the changes that you have made to the vamps. I think that you've done a good job on the wardancers 2. Done those wicked models proud. I think you have come on a long way with your painting since you started. xx

24-07-2008, 23:47
Nice Chariot of doom! It reminds me of the Batmobile from the first Batman movie.

28-07-2008, 23:17
I will soon be undertaking the adventure of my first 10k army, which is going to be Eldar. Here is a picture of a test Dire Avenger to get a feel for the colour scheme.

Let me know what you think and when I start this project properly I will start a new log for them. Tommorow I will hopefully have another vampire model to show you. My first proper conversion of an Abyssal Terror provided I decide on a colour scheme.

29-07-2008, 21:31
Here it is as promised, a creature both horrific and strange the Abyssal Terror. Hope you like it.
