View Full Version : Mangustheix's Log'o'Rama (CSM Log)

Hello All,

Welcome to my log. I am collecting chaos space marines. I was participating in the tale of X gamers over at www.carnage-events.com but had to drop out due to been soooo slow! I am gradually working through it and am hoping to keep a little log of what I am doing.

I have tried making a background but I keep on changing my mind. That is one thing about CSM codex, there is so many options! I love chaos because of its flexibility, but it does not help when trying to build a force (oh the irony!). One thing I know for sure is that I am having close combat dreadnoughts and they will be from forge world.

Without further ado I give you the first batch of minis. These are the terminators I have already posted over at Carnage Events and my first dreadnought all painted up.

When the new Codex:Chaos hits this may not be a problem anymore!:cries:

But you can't go wrong with FW dreads, and I really like these termies. Cool to see such a clean, impy fist / scythes of the emp scheme on termies that are only just enough converted to chaos. Very nice work, I look forward to your CSM, dreads, etc!

- Salvage

EDIT: Well excuse me! The dread looks rock solid, love the yellow/orange on his helmet and those 2 lovely chainfists of doom

Woot! first nice comment. Thanks. I read about the new CSM Codex and hopefully it will be good and still have the flexibility in it to be creative. I didnt want to go all out with the spiky bits, I like it to be subtle.

I think you need some purple to offset the yellow.
Purple piping would go down a treat.
Try liche purple with some warlock purple highlights. You'll love the results ;)

Looks good. Try adding another color though, like was suggested.

Amazing Gametop Army, the colours will draw the eye. Keep it going!

WOW thats one huge Autocannon. I like it

Thank you all for your comments

AMBS/Outlaw289 - I am worried about adding another colour since it could become cluttered and ruin the clean lines of the models. Any advice would be great though.

konrad - Yeah, I wasn't happy with the old reaper autocannon and I had loads of weapons from my imperial guard lying around so I thought I would use them. It worked out pretty well

the termis and the dread look great, how many coats of yellow did it take or did you simply just prime the armors a different color before assembling?

It was an absolute nightmare with the yellow. It is 3-4 coats of bubonic brown to get it even, then a mix of bubonic brown/sunburst yellow to highlight, followed with sunburst yellow edge highlights. I then glaze it with a flesh wash (or is it chestnut wash? I can't remember).

I started the log to give myself some motivation to carry on until I can get the foundation paints individually (I am not buying the whole set for 1 paint!)

Woohoo - Photo update!

Here is the second dreadnought I am working on at the moment. It is the black legion dreadnought from forgeworld. Again, I have gone for 2 Dread CCW for the theme of the army, and I have done some more converting. I cut the leg and repositioned it to look like it is stepping up on some collapsed floor. I was very nervous about this, since the model costs so much and I had never done it before, but it turned out really well.

I have also converted a havoc launcher for this dreadnought. I do have one of the other ones from the vehicle kit, but it is far too big. I spent ages looking for a part, but then I realized I had it all along! It is the cyclone missile launcher cut in half and positioned on the top there. The stand is made out of a IG heavy weapon stand cut down. I think this model has a great dynamic pose.

These all look good, but the black looks very flat- at first I thought they were WIP. GW I know has a few techniques for highligting black up in an issue of black gobbo.

Highlighting the black would be a good place for the purple that was suggested above. Make it look like it's an incredibly dark purple instead of a true black.

Also, I'm not sure if it turned out well, but your Autocannon sure turned out big.

Looks like it should have wheels on it. :p

Dreads looking great so far, pose is very good so no worries about cutting it!

Just paint the pipes purple. It'll work wonders.
Trust me!

To be honest, the photographs are not great. I will try and get some better ones in sunlight today. It does not show off the black very well. I will have to sit down and work out what to do with the purple.

Played my first game tonight, which was good fun. I slaughtered everything and won, but it was a rather inexperienced eldar player who had just got the codex a couple of weeks ago, so not much of a challenge. I took destroyer on both the dreads and got about 5 blood rages in 3 turns, very cool.

Here is a pic of some raptors I have painted up. They are not finished properly, and the base needs to be sorted out

I should have some pics of the CSM squads soon as well

Those look really nice mangustheix.
The repositioned dreadnought really works well.
As for another colour I can see where you'd be nervous but I agree with AMBS. Yellow and purple work wonders together. If you are not sure about painting a properly purple (purple base/white and purple highlights) have youthought about highlighting the balck areas purple. it could be as subtle as you wanted, mostly balck with a hint of purple at the endges. it would make the black look better and allow you to widen you pallet to three colours.

Failing that, have you thought of adding a bit of detail to the bases? Think of it like a frame. Imagine the difference on you models if they were on a snow base vs a black lava base. just a few ideas.

Keep up the good work!

I might try the purple highlighting the black on a test model.

The bases are not finished yet, so i still need to work on those. the terminators bases are done though
