View Full Version : Cryx Painting Log.

06-05-2007, 19:12
Well, I thought it was time to start concentrating on my cryx stuff, as I have pretty much given up on GW until they sort themselves out.

My current model collection consists of:

Casters: Denny/Asphyxious/Skarre/Goreshade/Witch Coven.
Heavy Jacks: Slayer/Reaper/Seether/Harrower.
Light Jacks: 4x Deathrippers/2x Nightwretch/ 1x Defiler
Solos: 2x Skarlock/1x Pistol Wraith/1x Nechrotech/1x Bloat Thrall/Sea Witch
Units: Mech Tralls/Bile Thralls/ Bane Thralls/Bane Knights.

My basic plan is to work through the books in order painting each entry, except the ones I don't like (IE the sticth thralls/necro surgeon)

Here is a shot of Casters

Basic scheme is crimson robes, black armour (maybe gloss) with silver and black metal, all glowing areas are light blue.

Pictures of the bone jacks so far.

I thought about starting Cryx but got pulled back to GW. The warjack looks really cool.

Great job so far

Nice skarre, similar to mine, though I did mine with almost white skin. Madrak looks good as Cryx too. I hope he gave Tartarus his axe back ;)

24-05-2007, 19:42
I do like the blue tinged albino skin on Madrak.

12-11-2007, 09:11
After a prolonged absence I managed to paint some new stuff. Hooray! I've sorted my zombie skin tones now, so more will follow!

(One of the best models yet! I've got the alternate sculpt on my desk, so will sort out "The Brothers Grim" soon. (My nickname for them.)

And the skarlock...

12-11-2007, 13:15
I love the blue glowy stuff from the centre of the Jacks and the Egregore. Nice to see another Cryx convert.

12-11-2007, 14:31
Nice - will start Cryx after Khador

13-11-2007, 09:05
thanks people.

I thought the blue would be an interesting change. Originally the jacks were green, like the mercs, but I changed my mind.

Not sure whether to gloss the jacks or not. Might kill the highlights. (Which do need re working. They look a bit crude in the pics.)

Next job will be a unit of mech thralls and another pistol wraith.

You wouldn't believe I've been working on this for two and a half years now would you! (I paint more for other people than myself these days :( )

I'd love to do Khador. Maybe when me and the missus get a place I can help paint her Khador army...

(BTW, I'm such a cryx convert I have the dragon tatooed on my back.)

I'm moving this thread to the Fantasy Logs Section (WarMachine is a Fantasy/Steam Punk Game).

Your pistol wraith is almost identical to mine. Good call! :D

13-11-2007, 21:47
I like how the glowy bits are different from the green of the standard scheme, but still tie in well with both the ghostly look and the tarnish of the metals.

And yeah, more agreement, the pistol wraith is especially cool & sinister looking.

Good going there! The Pistol Wraith and the Bone Jacks look especially good and menacing. And your bases look good - certainly very nice force on the way. Any closer shots of the Bile Thralls (or whatever they are - I don't play WM so I might be mixing names pretty badly)?

I really like the reddish, rich gold on the 'jack, care to give the recipe?

10-12-2007, 14:04
Two units finshed in the last few weeks. (I didn't post the double models, there are six biles and eight mechs in the army so far...)

Got another tourney in a few weeks, and really want to win best painted so am really working hard on these. Got three more bone jacks, a bloat, a brute and the second pistol wraith and the army is done...

Got loads more of reinforcements to do after that of course. Still, 500pts is gonna be a good feeling.

The gold is base coat of brazen brass, ink wash of brown ink or chestnut with a little scorched brown in it (I'm really running low on ink at the moment.) then highlight shining gold, then highlight burnished gold(or the other way round for old school painters!) than final highlight of gold mixed with mithril silver.

For the infantry, its Brass/ink wash/highlight shining/wash of hawk turquise mixed with glaxze medium/final light highlight of shining gold.

Hope that helps...

very nice looking force so far, really like the sharlock

good luck at the tourney and winning best painted

update time...

first up is the two night wretchs. These were quite fun and very fast to paint so that was cool.

and the Defiler... used to hate these guys, but they totally have a place in teh army now.

This is the second pistol wraith. For some reason this guy took three days, where the last guy took three hours, but he turned out pretty good I reckon.

Only three more models to paint now. My bloat thrall is 50% done, my brute is undercoated, and I've got another deathripper.

Tournament is set for the end of the month, so I should be cool for it... I hope!

Feedback as ever please folk..

both pistol wraiths are excellant.

18-03-2008, 11:41
Damn it! Another good cryx log! ;)
Really, that stuff is great. I like the idea to use blue instead of green light. Love the pale skin of the Bileys. Well done.

I guess, I must consider the purchase of pistol wraiths.

Keep this log alive, I want to see what this leads to.
Good work!

18-03-2008, 14:37
hehe, mutual cryx loving across two threads!

Don't panic, this thread will return shortly. I now have the keys to my new house (and there was much rejoicing) and no job, so will be hitting the paint quite hard in the not to distant future. Expect to see me take this to 750, (including epics) and then start army 2, the goreshade wraith army...

Alongside this, my middies will get some more love, and as promised, this will be the year of epic love. (clear your filthy minds) I have already done 2 stands of termies (how hard can it be to paint tiny tiny modles you ask?) and am working through a command stand. Also, I have a nice big pirate commission coming my way, alongside some battletech and khador stuff that is WIP. Looks like April will be busy for painting! Expect log no 3 real soon.

PS: Do get pistol wraiths. 33pts of pure evil that are great fun to paint!

27-10-2008, 19:03
Ok, time to bring this corpse back to life...

Work is now underway on the second 500pts of the force, with a new scheme and a new caster. This will be 500pts of Goreshade and his Bane ghost army. No shooting, just combat.

This is part of the "meatgrinder" event being run at the Charing Cross club I have recently joined. Got another week to get it up to 350 pts, then four weeks to hit 500. Can I do it? We shall see...

First up, my new caster. Had the model years now, but only just got around to the paint scheme. Love the model and think it turned out pretty good.

and his prom date... one soulless elven kid. Kinda based on the lassie from F.E.A.R.

C+C as ever is appreciated.

I will retake shots of the first 500 pts and repost in the near future. So sorry about the gaps for now... check photobucket for cptmcmeaty if you want to see the older shots.

Regards all.

27-10-2008, 22:17
Ok, kinda out of order, but here are the last few bits from the 500pt Denny force.

Bloat (with a slight repaint/highlight)

The much maligned Slayer... poor little chap.

Brute (or Ice Skating zombie as I like to think)

27-10-2008, 22:26
Apologies for the triple post... new better pics are up. My housemate just blew 170 on a lighting rig so I stole some time with it to improve the lighting. Go go living with film grads... :)

Enjoy, and please feedback...

29-10-2008, 19:17
Ok, Goreshade's Rippers are done. (Apart from the basing). I like these guys a little bit more than Denny's... which makes me sad as I was pleased with the Denny force. Still, every new model is a new lesson, so I guess it makes sense that they are getting better.

29-10-2008, 20:04
The Deathrippers look fantastic - keep up the good work - I have nearly completed 500 points of Cryx myself - I might even get some photos done and put them in a log here.

05-12-2008, 18:02
Ok, I've lost my blue background and my housemate's lighting rig is at his studio, so you will have to forgive me for the pic quality.

I've completed the Combine and a Seether, both of which I'm thinking of dropping from the list annoyingly...
I've also built and sprayed the Bane Thralls and built the Bane Knights. Those guys are a total pain to assemble, the mold lines are hard to remove and I replaced the spears with brass rod for durability which was no picnic... Anyone that runs thirty has my respect simply due to the assembly effort involved. I'm not sure I can face a second unit purely due to assembly time... plastic please :)

so here we go:

I might add a Deathjack and possibly a Stalker to try something different, plus I need to get a couple of blisters of Bane Knights to max out the unit. Tartarus is still needing assembly and obviously my units need painting.

Again, sorry for the slightly lower quality pics, but hopefully they give the general idea.

05-12-2008, 20:57
Excellent work again - you cannot drop the combine, they rule!

06-12-2008, 12:15
Excellent work again - you cannot drop the combine, they rule!

I can't work out what to do with them. They are a bit squishy, essentially costing me 70pts to pump up G.Shade's Command so the Seether behaves.

I just don't like getting expensive stuff near to the enemy. If they are in range to cast, they are in range to die horribly against whatever is left... plus my main opponent runs Widowmakers and Doomreavers so my magic might as well not happen as either I can't target, or the Def is 20+...

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

06-01-2009, 17:53
Been having a bit of trouble with my WM gaming recently (check my blog in the sig for details), so am thinking about running other casters.

As such I decided to get my coven finished. Egregore has been done for a couple of years now, but I never got round to the girls. So here's number one. Two and three are half painted already.

Apologies for the poor lighting, I have yet to get matching bulbs and a diffusion tent.

I'm off to a 350 pt tourney in two weeks, will be taking Denny and I need a second list. Maybe the Coven, maybe Skarre.

Plus I'm involved in a 750 pt ladder league too, so I've got the Bane Knights and Tartarus ready assembled and sprayed and waiting for some love, so expect to see them soon.

Feedback as ever please.

07-01-2009, 22:24
Loving your stuff, dude!

The combine and Seether are great, the witch turns out good aswell.
You just made me think to purchase the Seether. Tonight. All hail the internets!

Keep it up!

Goreshade's friends are finished.

04-02-2009, 21:16
Wowee! These are really nice! How are you doing the dead flesh?

Wowee! These are really nice! How are you doing the dead flesh?

On the zombies or the bone on the thralls?

12-02-2009, 12:44
Been very busy prepping for a tourney on Sunday so lots of new things:

Bane Knights. I still need to highlight the eyes to finish the models (and paint the sheilds I guess).

Slightly converted Tartarus. Wish I could sculpt so he had a proper skirt on. I love this guy, but his model is a little meh..

Second unit... because you can never have too many.

Finally a full army shot to date:

12-02-2009, 16:30

Quick and dirty to finish off the models needed for Sunday. A few areas that could have been a little neater but he looks good enough. Lets hope he was worth the investment.

17-02-2009, 12:20
Loving the Cankerworm - I have just assembled mine, cannot wait to use it.

How did the tournament go btw?

20-04-2009, 13:59
Well, back again from the . I've been working really hard on the Cryx, but tend to show my work on the PP forums more these days.
Plus I actually put some work up on CMON and got reasonable scores (6.6 ish)

Anyway, thought I would keep the plog going here too.

Some stuff that has been recently painted.

New caster. I love her. Used in one game of MKI and one of MKII and its so cool being able to run multiple heavies.

The much maligned Reaper. Poor chap.

A quick and dirty paint job on these guys.

20-04-2009, 14:01
Stalker number 1 (number two has arrived recently based off the MKII rules, they rock now!)

And another new caster for fun and games.

20-04-2009, 14:22
I love your 'jacks and that last caster is quite well done.

20-04-2009, 19:10
Wow they are awesome. I love the reaper, one of my favourite jacks.
