Welcome to my latest project log.

I seem to have a trait of starting a project and then get bored with it and stop it (Eldar). So I had a long hard think on what to do next. Whilst I was having a major clearout of my bits cupboard I stumbled across a box of models I had painted a few years ago – including the first model I painted for my tyranids – Hive Fleet Tarentus.

After close study of the newly discovered Carnifex I came to the conclusion that it was a poor specimen, and that with the skills I have developed over the last 2 years since I completed the army I could make them better. One of the biggest regrets I have with my Tyranid army is that there are no conversions, the models are all in standard poses and on dreary bases with a bit of grass blobbed on them, and with sites like Hive Fleet Moloch (http://www.hivefleetmoloch.com/) around I wanted to do so much more. So with a box full of random old models and some unwanted DKOK it was off to ebay and the profits would be used to help fund this latest adventure.

Now that Im armed with a shopping list as long as my arm, its time for a deadline and a theme to the proposed project.

The deadline– Carnage 2008 (or the UK GT final if Im really lucky).

The theme – Everyone’s favourite and one Im used to using, the monstrous creatures and Genestealers combo.

As for conversions and ideas, Im really inspired by HF Moloch’s work on his website, so expect to see some attempts at recreating some of the monsters on there.

Some of you may wonder why Im going back and redoing an army, my answer is that it was Tyranids that got me into the hobby – specifically the Genestealers in Space Hulk and they are still my favourite army. Ive tried others and the will of the Hive mind is too strong.

For those of you who don’t know the colours of Hive Fleet Tarentus, here is an image.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f27/stormtrooper81/5000pt%20game/DSC03771.jpg

Im hoping to get some things ordered in the next couple of days once Ive been paid for my ebay items.

EDIT:

The Genestealer incursion of Hive fleet Sargamatha has been destroyed, all reports state that the fleet has been destroyed by something larger.....

Tarentus is back.

Yep, Ive changed my mind. I cant base my Tyranids on Molochs and use his colourscheme - I like mine too much. So all posts mentioning Sargamatha have been erased. The fleet has been consumed by the bigger, stronger fleet.

This is cool. Can we see what is on your shopping list?

I'm going through nearly the exact same thing - Tyranids got me interested, they were the first army I painted, and I'm interrupting my Eldar to go back and repaint/convert my first army with my new skillz. Should be fun, and I look forward to seeing what you do.

Do you have any older models in your army? My first Tyranids were second edition, so I have converted Lictors, a Tyrant, Warriors, a Screamer-Killer, and some Genestealers from that era. I think the old models look great in fresh paint, so I hope you'll be fielding at least a few antiques. :)

Nope :p

I dont have any of the old 2nd/3rd edition models anymore as I only restarted the hobby towards the end of 3rd edition so my current Tyranid army is all the stuff released with the codex in 2005.

Update:

Ive been working on a random warrior this afternoon to see how the colourscheme would look with a bit more time taken over it and how it would look on the style of bases Im thinking of.

Here is a couple of pictures of the neatened colourscheme. It is just a test piece so the hooves will be neater on the final models and more care on removal of the mould lines and the final bases will have a few more details on them.

Now I was going to get some resin bases with slate on them, the cost wasnt too bad but now Ive done a cork version Im having a rethink. The good thing about the cork apart from being cheap and having loads of it already, is that I can shape the bases to accomodate any conversions I do whereas the resin ones dont. All I need to do on them to make them look more natural is add more sand and gravel to hide the 'layers' in places on the base. Plus it gives me something to do while I await payments from ebay.

Ahhh tyranids were the army that got me back into the game mid-last year. sounds like a good combo, nothing like wicked fast genestealers supported by the fire of a bunch of shooty MCs (though some would argue you might need one squad of hormies in there to offset the low modelcount you're going to be looking at)

Thanks for the comments so far. Progress is going to be very slow over the next week or 2 as Im waiting on mail orders.

So far Ive ordered a Carnifex and a box of Genestealers. As well as some resin bases from here. (http://stores.ebay.com.au/Back-to-Base-ix)

Once I get paid for the other items I can order some more goodies :D

I've used leaping rippers for that role - take punishment well and tie units up nicely. If a full unit of 10 rippers makes it to the enemy lines untouched (which it can do in turn 2 generally, otherwise turn 3 if theyre sitting back a bit) - you can quite often tie up a couple of squads at once quite easily for a few turns, by the time they wade out of the rippers the rest of their friends are dead ;D!

Looking very nice stormtrooper - but I would reccomend watering your bone paint down a little bit more, its looking very thick at this stage : )!

I have just started Tyranids too! Forgeworld has some really cool tyranid stuff. I might get some things from them, they make great center pieces when the army is fully finished.

I'll be watching this thread with intrest.

I know the bone is a little thick, thats because my bleached bone has gone a bit 'gloopy' - time for a new pot.

There has been no real updates because Im waiting on a variety of mail orders from things like Genestealers, a Carnifex and a Hive Tyrant to the resin bases and various basing materials and other bits and pieces from BWB.

So in the last couple of days my mind has started to wander to trying different colourschemes but in the end Im sticking to my current one. So to take my mind of things, I made the Dakkafex's Devourers. These will look better on the Carnifex as I have a couple of other little conversions to go on it to tie the look together.

I also took a better picture of my Barbed Hierodule so I can put it on CMON.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f27/stormtrooper81/Random/DSC04139.jpg

As for further updates, Im hoping things start arriving next week so I can make a start on some Genestealers (although Im still considering the Ripper route) and when the bases arrive I cant wait to start the Tyrant guards.

Until then......

Brilliant work there mate, the only thing is that the bone needs to be re-done, it really detracts from the rest of the model.

Just my two pence

Update:

Heres a brief bit of background to when Tarentus was first encountered.

In the late part of M30 the Karbonis sector, located on the fringes of the Veiled region of Segmentum Tempestus was cut off by violent warpstorms. After 10,000 years the warpstorms abated and a lost Adeptus Mechanicus exploratory fleet rediscovered the sector. One of the first systems to be explored was Tarentus. Ancient records indicate that the system had three large gas giant planets. One of these giants was recorded as having four moons with vast swamps and marshland, with colonies that mined resources from beneath the surface and then distributed to other systems in the sector. These were the only known inhabited planetoids in the system. Early missions to the outermost planetoids only recorded barren, airless rocks. It was on the third planetoid that the exploratory fleet began to get some answers.

The third planetoid, recorded as Odessa II, was still covered in vast swamps and jungles. At first look the terrain looked like it was dying, but in fact it wasn’t – the planet had unusually high levels of gases and toxins in the atmosphere. These gases and toxins covered the surface in a dense and sinister looking mist.

The exploratory team located the landing beacon of the mining station and as the completed a circuit of the base they noticed no signs of activity – it was eerie. Once on the landing pad, there were still no signs of life. A sweep of the station turned out fruitless and no survivors or bodies were found, but there were signs of combat. The perimeter fences had large gouges missing; as if they had been eaten away by acid, some blast doors on the station were reinforced, but again eaten through by acids.

The team was about to leave when the attack happened.

Hive fleet Tarentus had found something new to prey upon.

So there you have it, a small bit of background to my fleet - Hive fleet Tarentus.

Small update.

Today I recieved my bases from b2b and I have to agree with what Titan and other people have said in that the quality of the products are very high.

Tonight Im working on my first heavy Carnifex. Im trying to achieve a rearing up pose like Molochs, and to do that Ive had to extend the central part of the body by sculpting (a first for me).

Im happy with the result as most of it will be hidden anyway.

Ive managed to finish the mid section. The Carnifex does come with a midsection, but as the pose needed modifying I needed to sculpt it to blend in with the rest of the model.

Ive edited the first post of this thread to let you know that Sargamatha is no more - its been consumed by a bigger fleet: Tarentus.

Anyway, Ive managed to finish my first heavy Carnifex and Im really pleased with how its turned out, it looks massive!

The enhanced senses is from the warrior sprue - its the Venom cannon support arm.

Time for a brief update.

Ive painted a new Genestealer, taking more care with the highlights and its come out nice - not GD standard but better than the current Genestealers I have.

Ive also been working on the first Tyrant guard. Ive posted some wip pictures, but its not likely to get finished soon as Im waiting for some bits from BWB to finish it off.

I'm liking the use of unised canifex bits and pieces on that tyrant guard. I though that the old ones were too spindly and the new ones too short, that looks great, I'm going to have to nick the idea now though...

Can you change it back to Hive Fleet Tarentus please, you must have got lost in the warp as Sargamatha is no more...........

:p

Back on topic.

Tonight Ive been working on the first brood of Genestealers. For tournament purposes, each squad of Genestealers will have a different type of head as one thing Tyranids get screwed ovr with at tournaments is squad markings - you cant exactly brand them now can ya?

So this first brood will have the feeder tendril heads which I think are quite cool and gribbly. Progress isnt exactly fast at present, but I think after a weekend break I can crack on afresh and get the brood built by the end of next week.

After the brood is built (10 in a brood btw) it will be on with some painting - Im looking forward to doing the Carnifex. I think I will alternate between a Genestealer brood and a MC, and once Ive got my 3 Genestealer broods done it will be fw rippers between painting MC. Once the Genestealers and Carnifex are done I have the stompy Hive Tyrant to do, his two guards, another Carnifex and maybe the second Genestealer brood.
