I've got over 3,000 points of painted Tyranids. They were my first army and I just wanted them at a decent tabletop standard, so I used every shortcut I could to get them there. Now I can't stand to look at any one model for too long as I've moved way beyond them in terms of painting skill. So now I've decided to repaint the entire army and bulk it up along the way!

This (http://www.maj.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=114003) gallery should give you an idea of the old color scheme. The new one is almost exactly the same, but it's more what I envisioned when I made up the scheme. I changed it (Boltgun Metal claws, teeth and muscle, for example) to use some of my brother's paints and save my own money. I'm also changing the bases to a jungly scheme, like the Beastmen army I'm finishing up (link in signature).

The first model to get the new color scheme was a winged Warrior. The winged Warriors originally all used these (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/WIP/oldwing.jpg) wings (except with a rending claw at the hand), made from a rending claw, flesh hooks, and card. Now they have Gargoyle wings.

Not brilliant, but much better than before. And it should look great when applied to the entire army.

I just got two oldschool Warriors in the mail. I'm going to have one old-style in each brood to serve as the real brains. The idea is that each old Warrior uses Space Marine DNA (like the Tyrant Guard) and is capable of more advanced thinking than the other Warriors in the brood, which essentially act as bodyguards / fire support / synapse relays. But basically just an excuse to use these old models!

I have two Hive Tyrants - one winged Tyrant, and one old 2nd edition converted one. Here it is before paint:

And here it is now. I painted it, played with it, and now tore it off its base so that I can modify it and fancify the base. The four eyes represent enhanced senses, something the shooty Warriors will get as well.

So there you have it. Tomorrow I'll finish the greenstuffing on the three remaining winged Warriors and the 2nd edition shooty Warrior. I'll also try to convert the Tyrant to my current standards.

Looking good...

3 good logs on the go? That's just greed! :p

<3 Old Skool Tyrants

Great to hear you're at home and celebrating with a third log of awesome. The little resculpts on the old metals are very nice little things, and a couple updated weapons is acceptible I suppose :D

Pity to hear that the army is more new than old, but way to keep those old bugs kicking.

The wings on the warrior are really nice. For some reason looking at it makes me hungry :D . Looking forward to this log, after reading through your eldar one should be interesting to see what you can come up with from a tyraind perspective, good luck.

Incidently would you mind divulging how you painted the yellow on the wings? I always have trouble painting lighter colours. :(

also consider me subscribed, as seems to be the trend on this site  .

Looking good. Adding classic models to an army always adds more character.

Keep up the good work

Greed? I'm working my rear off to give you lot some decent reading material! :p

The fleshy bits are simply Rotting Flesh with Yellow Ink. The current pictures are poor because I'm shooting on stained wood - when I get more finished models I promise I'll set up a decent photo area!

I cleaned the Tyrant and redid his base. The base is now painted, though this photo does it NO JUSTICE. My camera kept washing out the tan and I had to take a picture in low light then fix it in Photoshop. After the Tyant's painted I'll get good pictures, but here's the base for now:

The floor bit is from a Mega Bloks set. I like the look so much that I'm going to have Gaunts and other 'Nids scuttling over chopped-up temple ruins overgrown with vines.

I also greenstuffed the winged Warriors and shooty old Warrior. Just a bit more of that and tomorrow they should be ready for priming! I also prepped some Ripper bases.

12-05-2007, 03:47
Consider me subscribed. Liking the colour contrast. Also nice to see someone else using the old school models.

19-05-2007, 11:55
Tyrant is basically done - a bit more drybrushing on the carapace, yellow borders, Rotting Flesh on the muscles, touching up of one vine... but he's pretty much there.

I'm very happy with him, and I hope you guys like him.

19-05-2007, 11:56
loving the mixture of styles!

The tyrant looks grand, really reminds me how much I like that old model. The paint scheme is quite cool too, I like the striking armor plates vs the charcoal skin. Wonderful base too.

Hmm ... my little brother has an old tyrant I could probably acquire for cheap ... I just might :(

That flying warrior looks awesome, like something by el Bosco himself. I'd love to see a whole squad of them, actually.

23-05-2007, 20:33
Go for it, Boss! It is a fun model. I converted mine to hold a 4th edition lash whip and a trimmed-down 4th edition bonesword, though.

Here's the old shooty Warrior with a current Deathspitter, current Genestealer scything talons, Genestealer carapace, sculpted extra eyes for enhanced senses, and toxin sacs. I love these guys in the game - got four more in the same configuration (current models, though).

EDIT: Forgot to mention he's not ENTIRELY done - needs a bit of neatening up around the exposed muscle, the blue on the toxin sacs, and probably a bit more. But enough for now, my poor Warp Spiders need to be finished!

31-05-2007, 17:47
No one likes the Warrior, eh? Egads, my bleeding heart.

No REAL work, but here's some stratagems ('ammo store' hive and 'power generator' toxin sac) that I'm planning on neatening up and painting soon. Warrior thrown in for scale.

I'm debating decorating the bases with cityfight rubble or jungly stuff. Probably the latter, since Tyranids promote plant growth anyway and then they'll fit as objectives or terrain in non-cityfight games.

31-05-2007, 18:24
I like the revamped warrior Pekel! Just now realized I hadn't gushed about it in a timely fashion like I usually do with your stuff :D Maybe the only thing I'm not thrilled with here is that the second set of eyes didn't stand out to me as eyes until you mentioned it. Or ... his left one does, but the right one - in that one pic at least - just didn't jump out to me. Probably a big nothing though :P

I'm trading my brother a new oblit for the remnants of his tyrant, then might try to pick up some newer scytals to replace the lash & sword with. Unfortunately I think he put the 'forked tongue' on his tyrant way back when, the head I like less ...

Haha, this is the scheme I was thinking of before swithing to blue (sig).

Fantastic work mate, always loved the old tyrants and you have done a fantastic job on them. The electric green looks awesome.

06-06-2007, 22:53
Maybe the only thing I'm not thrilled with here is that the second set of eyes didn't stand out to me as eyes until you mentioned it. Or ... his left one does, but the right one - in that one pic at least - just didn't jump out to me. Probably a big nothing though :P
Yeah, the second eye on the right side really didn't come out well. A bit large and smashed. Ah, well. Too late to fix it, and I'll survive.

At the moment I'm reworking the mighty Orkifex. After my dad knocked a lamp on him while I was at college I've had to pin him together. I took the opportunity to enhance the damage on the tank, remove some nasty mold lines, and neaten up the greenstuff. I'm about to resculpt the shattered joints and then he'll be reprimed and painted.

The story behind this is that I never got an original Screamer Killer, and I was sort of nostalgic for one. So when one popped up cheap on ebay I went for it. But I wanted a reason why it looked so different from the other two Carnifex. So I went to Photoshop, dropped an Ork face on a picture of the model, and I liked it! So I hacked apart the model and went to do my first real sculpting job. This aggressive Carnifex utilizes Ork DNA for enhanced toughness and strength. Last game I played I needed to fill out on points (3000 total) so I fielded this guy with almost all of the CC upgrades. Something like 272 points. My brother was absolutely fine with the idea that Ork body odor could count as 'toxic miasma'. :p

So he and my flying Tyrant teamed up to smash quite a few Marines. Fun game, and it certainly earned the poor old Orkifex a revamp. So stay tuned!

07-06-2007, 00:17
Wow what a blast from the past! I love these old models - they really remind me of 'the good old days'. I didn't re-use mine though because when the newer lot came out in third ed I instantly thought the new lot looked much better (apart from the Carnifex, Tyrant and Biovore).

Seeing the old mixed in with the new like this has made me re-think a little. It fits in really well with the whole constant evolution idea. I might dig out my old stuff after all now.

07-06-2007, 03:57
that screamer killer looks good!
The chief: th older stuff mixes in nicely with the new. my army mixes it up from all editions!

07-06-2007, 04:36
wow! these old/new 'nids look so out there but it really works

what next? a walking zoanthrope?

09-06-2007, 04:29
Whoo, comments! Thanks.

what next? a walking zoanthrope?
Even when that was the only Zoanthrope I wasn't really a fan of it - both that and the Gargoyles (plus the spindly front legs of the Biovore). But sentimental value's taken its toll - perhaps, if I was to get an old Zoan, I could field it as having Synapse? Sort of like a variant Warrior, while the big floating brains do the Warp Blasting. But that'd be after finishing the massing heap of models I've got to work on (at least it feels that way). Next on the paint list is definitely the Orkifex, though. I already got it reprimed and based.

New paint! The foreground models are new repaints, background are old ones. Both new ones need a bit more yellow drybrushing and neatening up where the yellow drybrush spilled onto the dark skin. But this gives you the overall idea.

I'm not sure what to do with the Gaunt carapaces. My old ones had different patterns on the back, since I got bored with the idea of painting the same one over and over. Should I make the repaints with random patterns as well, or have each brood with a unique pattern? I have 10 Termagants, 10 Termagants, and 10 Devgaunts. The latter idea makes more sense, but there'll be less variety and it'll be weird to mix them if I ever wanted to field, say, 15 Termagants.

Suggestions/opinions? Criticism? Favorite carapace patterns?

10-06-2007, 08:11
I was looking forward to putting plants on the base, but now I think it'd look too cluttered. Oh well, I'm happy with it.

Got the other 9 old-style Genestealers and 2 flying Warriors primed and just barely touched with the brush. I know it's not real progress, but at least you know what's coming next.

18-06-2007, 01:54
I replaced the old photo in the post above with one of the finished 10 Genestealers. Those models took quite a while, and I'm glad to have them out of the way. Sorry for the bad photo, didn't feel they were really worth a fancy setup (aka sheet of white paper under them).

The last two winged Warriors are almost entirely finished, and I'll have pictures of them soon.

After the winged Warriors I'm going to repaint my 500 pt list, working my way up. So the next things'll be Hormagaunts and my magnetized Carnifex.

19-06-2007, 05:01
Alright, hopefully this update's interesting (I admit 9 new copies of a model you've already seen is pretty lame).

I finished painting the winged Warriors and added plants to all of their bases.

Now I'm off to do some greenstuffing, inclusing filling the gaps in that magnetic Carnifex! I'm thinking my Sniperfex, which rarely moves much from the ojective it's holding, should have some little epiphytic plant growing out from under its carapace. I figure if it's sitting around in a hot, humid jungle all day, odds are some spores of something will get lodged somewhere and start growing. So I may sculpt a little bonsai-looking thing curling around its left shoulder. I'm also debating sticking a big flower on the base of the magnetic one. At first I thought it looked like a huge jungly blossom, but my brother thought it made the 'Fex look small and unimposing. I'm personally a proponent of being able to use a Flowerfex! Plus, it makes it more humiliating when the beast guns down his powerful Chaplain HQ, Charles (or 'Charlie Chaplain' as we call him).

19-06-2007, 16:06
Impressive carapace on those squads of bugs. I like the rending feet on the warriors, and good 'hopping about' poses too. Look forward to the sniperflowerfex.

Also, I traded for that tyrant my brother had. Tore it apart, except for some stubborn glue attaching the head and spines, but it looks like the tip of the tail is missing and has the implant attak double-tongue glued in it's place :wtf: I'm thinking I'll GS the tongue a bit so it merges with the tail and just go with that!

25-06-2007, 10:48
That could look good with a bit of greenstuff, Boss. PM me or post here when/if you get pictures of it finished - I'd like to see what you do with it. :)

And though I've been working mostly on Eldar and my Slaan (and spending yet MORE time with the girlfriend) I was determined to get a start on the Magnetfex for my 500 point list.

So the head is done, most of the carapace green is painted, some of the skin green, and the browns on the base. At least it's a start.

EDIT: Also, the 5 rating was voted down to a 3... I don't put much stock in the ratings, but I do have enough faith in them to hope that it was a random jackarse voting 1's on everyone instead of an accurate portrayal of the army's quality.

Looking good pekel, can't wait to see that beast finished!

25-06-2007, 18:58
awsome work. I love your choice in colors, it makes them look more alien. can't wait to see more

26-06-2007, 08:31

I was looking for ideas for a carapace pattern and sort of stumbled across the black dots idea be accident. Do you like it? Should all my MC get it? Should I continue it down the sides of the carapace, or would that overdo it?

26-06-2007, 13:16
I like the pattern. It makes things a little more intresting. I'd just keep it like it is now. I'm afraid that if you do much more, it will ruin the effect. As for using the same patern on other models, I think that would be kinda neat. A slightly diffent patern would make it even more intresting.

26-06-2007, 16:34

Out of all your nids the carapace scheme shines the most on this fex, Pekel. I dig the spots too, but agree that you shouldn't do more on this particular bug. Gotta say again, impressive green carapace, really solid.

27-06-2007, 07:21
Wow awesome re-paint job, Love the black dot pattern but as everyone else is saying don't over do it with the dots. I would put dots on the gaunts as well it gives them that uniform feel. I used red spots on mine but on the flesh not the carapace as a sort of natural warning, like poison arrow frogs they are brightly coloured to warn predators that they are toxic.
Great work really inspiring for me as I've just started the hobbie!:p

27-06-2007, 11:45
game_junky, I was about to post in your Tyranid log last night but wound up going to sleep a bit earlier than I intended. I like them a lot and I'll definitely get around to posting there eventually.

Sorry to everyone who said no more dots - I went and added a few more on the sides. Overdone?

I'll probably pull the flower off - it's not glued in. I just wanted to see how it looked.

27-06-2007, 14:38
Eh, I don't think the extra dots detract at all. In fact, with the dark skin they probably are a good thing, break up all that BRIGHT carapace a bit.

The flower needs to go though :D

- Salvage

28-06-2007, 11:06
Nice, the Fex looks good, almost believable colours and patterns.

What would make it look better (imo) would be to highlight the dark skin just a little, looks a bit flat atm. And to do the same with the dots, just placing a smaller lighter green dot in them.

28-06-2007, 23:17
The camera sort of washes out the subtle things - the skin was primed black, painted DA Green, given a black wash, and drybrushed Snot Green. The result actually has pretty good depth, though it doesn't show in the photos. And most of the black dots also have a gray dot in the center. In the future I'll try to set up better photos.

Very good advice, though!

HA! I knew I reconized the basing on your Tyrant, I bought a bunch of those sets when I was younger, they come in handy now for Terrain and basing, im using the Dragon Wings for my Tyrant =d

The razor-wire you have one of your Warriors standing on, is that from a plastic army-men set?

29-06-2007, 12:53
Oh, good. When I read you had added more dots, I about freaked. But, you didn't smother it in dots or anything. It still looks great. Keep up the stellar paint jobs while I'm gone, okay?

01-07-2007, 19:34
When my friend who really got me into Warhammer gave me a bunch of random models and bitz, these odd things were included:

I was painting my Slaan for a Fantasy-only painting competition in my local GW and my girlfriend wanted to try her hand at painting. So she chose her colors and painted this:

Not great, obviously, but it was her first try. Anyhow, at one point in painting I stood it next to a Tyranid model of mine. The green, yellow and gray all worked perfectly. I jokingly said I could use it as a Genestealer cult leader, since I had been wanting to make one for a long time. Then I looked back at the models today and decided to make a real cult leader. So I made this:

The staff end had already been cut off for a Dark Eldar conversion (as you can tell in the original group shot of this post). So I snipped it away and added a bolt pistol. I shaved off the hair lines, making the man look like he had a slightly bulbous, Genestealer-like head. Then I cut away the globe in his right hand and gave him a Genestealer skull. This was a head cut off a a BfM Genestealer with the lower jaw removed, veins shaved off, and eyes drilled out. I also cut off the man's earring and the symbol on his stomach. I plan on painting a Tyranid symbol there.

Now I just need to greenstuff the Tyranid head-studs of carapace onto him and add a thumb to the hand holding the skull. I think he's the spitting image of a cultist leader! If I can I'll get a few Catachan to convert into Genestealer hybrids. :D

02-07-2007, 08:52
bit of shakespear going on there!

Inquisitor Konig
02-07-2007, 12:50
genestealer cults are always interesting... toobad there arent any good rules for them.

02-07-2007, 20:02
jasevx: Yes, I thought that too. Ah well, a little drama in an army can't be too bad. I think it looks sort of like he's being hypnotized or otherwise compelled by the skull... a pretty good representation of the hive mind's control over him.

Inquisitor Konig: I plan on using this guy as an excuse to ally with a friend's IG army for Apocalypse games. If I get nine Catachan to convert into hybrids I could always just play them as another Gaunt brood in friendly games.

Started slapping on some paint - I'll finish him tonight. Supposed to bike down and meet a friend, and I'm already late.

Doesn't show the nice skin, but eh... you get the point.

05-07-2007, 08:22
My girlfriend just had surgery and is undergoing a painful recovery, so needless to say painting minis hasn't been my top priority. But I did get a bit done.

I think he needs some yellow - probably in the Tyranid symbol, perhaps as freehand on the cloak. Input?

My Eldar Farseer-Genestealer hybrid is almost done. I decided he looks a bit too 'stealer-like, so I'm going to sculpt on some little pointy ears.

05-07-2007, 09:26
He has turned out brilliant, 'Alas poor yarrick, I knew him well..'

Beautiful work. I really love that winged Warrior and all the awsome conversions. I`m a real sucker for the paint scheme too. All I can say is keep it up. That Tyrant sure looks evil.

07-07-2007, 12:07
I decided to go with just the yellow on the Tyranid symbol. I'll post that later.

Finished another Genestealer hybrid, this one much more Genestealer-like.

Now I can ally my two armies - Tyranids and Eldar - in Apocalypse games! You can't see it too well, but I added the ears mentioned in my last post. The skin will be painted in Eldar flesh tones, to slightly offset the distinct Genestealer features.

20-07-2007, 06:39
Still on 'vacation' in Washington - doing field work on an indian reservation. I get home on Sunday, and should paint the Farseer then. No suggestions, then?

I did draw these sketches. First for my Trygon, to be made from a Carnifex and Snake Alien toy. Definitely not good art, but it helped a bit with getting ideas down.

Next I drew two designs for the Devilfex I plan on making. I figured I always use it, so why not make a permanent one and use the magnetic Carnifex for more interesting configurations. I decided to use the second Tyrannosaur look (heavily inspired by a fellow Warseer member, let me know if you know who it is! I forget the name). I'm going to convert my Sniperfex to use the Gorilla look.

Then I was still bored and made more Carnifex. One 'screamer-killer' type and one inspired by the Tyrant Guard concept sketches. It would have carapace 'wings' in the front arm sockets and dual guns poking through from the second arm socket.

And lastly, because I didn't post it here, ideas for redoing my flying Tyrant. I already ordered the thornback bitz to make taloned feet. Suggestions for which head crest or carapace designs to use would be nice.

20-07-2007, 06:39
And here's the Tyrant itself at the moment. NOTE: I'd be very willing to part with it for $55 (enough for me to buy a new Tyrant and Balrog wings). I could even slap a nice layer of paint on it for free. If you have a Hive Fleet that could use a pretty Tyrant, let me know what colors you want. :)

28-07-2007, 20:20
No love for Tyranids. Well, here's some paint. I do feel sort of cheap posting the same model in both my Eldar and Tyranid logs, but it's an overlap model. Since it's basically done (just a bit of neatening up), from here on it'll be all pure 'Nids.

Group photo (WIP):

Final front:

Final rear:

Just needs a bit more paint on some places where the black's still showing through. Also: should I paint green vine designs on the tan? The Guardians and tanks all have it, but I think it'd make this guy look cluttered...

29-07-2007, 09:00
Thats worked really well, keep it coming!

29-07-2007, 16:33
awsome work on the genstealer cult leader. I like this one better because he looks like he's turning into a genstealer. keep up the good work.

06-08-2007, 07:01
I got a bit of paint on some Gaunts, but nothing interesting. Here's my two Lictors, which I hope to repaint soon. I still think the conversions are pretty cool, so here they are in the old paintschemes.

The grey one will be painted with the wall tan to match the Tyrant. The front of the Lictor will mostly be tan, but will fade to the normal colors on the back. As for the tan one, I'm not sure...

Though I do like having all my Lictors be in complete camo. The tan one matches my desert terrain, and the gray matches my cityfight. Perhaps I'll paint the wall one all tan and then do the other one all brown, with some rocks around it.

08-08-2007, 01:43
At the moment I'm finishing the 4 Gaunts. I also tore into my four Ripper bases, making them into six and adding some scenery to fill the gaps.

With Apocalypse coming, the more models the merrier!

My Broodlord, Biovore, and a Spore Mine all underwent mold-line removal and rebasing. I was originally too lazy to even base the models properly - I simply slathered on Desert Yellow and dunked in sand. When the paint dried, the sand stuck. For the most part. I'll prime the Broodlord and Biovore tonight, ideally finishing painting the Broodlord with the Gaunts. Come back for another update later tonight!

08-08-2007, 06:50

EDIT: Tonight I pack up for college, leaving tomorrow morning. I'm going to be a counselor-type thing at a pre-orientation program. After that (it ends the 16th) my girlfriend will be staying in my room and we'll be crashing all the fun freshman orientation activities. That should be another 5 or so days. I won't have ANY updates until after then, most likely. So any posts keeping this alive until then would be greatly appreciated. :)

23-08-2007, 18:18
Alright - girl is gone, had a great time, and all my models are coming up next Friday or Saturday. I plan on having the Rippers be the next thing I paint, but I have a question. I feel like the models have been a bit overwhelmingly green between the Tyranids, mossy ground, and added plants. For the Tyranid life growing from the ground on the Ripper bases, I have four options.

1. Paint them exactly as I would paint normal Tyranids (green, yellow, gray).
2. Paint them black and drybrush with Rotting Flesh. I like the look of this and I did it with my old models, as seen here (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/zoans.jpg).
3. Compromise - have it be a more subdued version of the Tyranid scheme, mostly using Chaos Black / Catachan Green / Rotting Flesh.
4. Go crazy and have them be blue, orange, yellow, purple... whatever. They're Tyranid-mutated flora, after all. Would probably involve bright color blending and mottling.

I'm torn between all the options besides 1, which I think is boring and would be unattractive. 3 is probably best for looks, but 4 would be fun and a cool homage to the crazy original Tyranid colors. The bitz did come from an original Warrior, after all.

Input is greatly appreciated!

25-08-2007, 19:56
I'm voting for a color scheme of CRAZY!! EDIT: I have a slightly better idea: bright Red through bright Purple to bright Blue. No more green, yellow, or orange. Note, this is for the alien foliage. It woulds look so cool! Oh, also note, none of the refenced colors refer to GW colors, but more to the good old color wheel. Mix your own colors, why don't you?

I really like the look of this army. The gene stealer cultists especailly. Not really the kinda color scheme I would go for (kinda bland to me), but I bet it looks great in person, especially on a nice battlefield. Keep up the good work, and work on your Eldar! Their topic is almost dead!

I'm painting the Ripper bases now, and I'll leave the terrain bits until last. Also painting a Tyrant Guard (old style). But my camera battery died, and the charger is lost, so no photos. I just ordered a new one, so you'll have pictures when that arrives.

I feel like crazy colors would be nice on the old-style bits (from the old Warrior), but not on the modern-looking terrain bits (one clipped from Zoanthrope, for example). So I'm still undecided.

Excellent genestealer magus conversions. The plastic celestial wizard based one works really well.
Keep up the good work!

Is it the new camera, or have you changed how much scorp green / yellow you're using? These new lads seem really really bright, which I think is spectacular but unsure if all the army is as bright too or if things have changed up ... That's possibly the best looking old guard I've seen too, nice work.

Thanks, guys!

Boss, the different background colors are just messing up the contrast. Here's an unaltered photo - my girlfriend's computer doesn't have Photoshop.

Rippers are all finished besides the Tyranid growths on the bases. I've decided to go with the black / Catachan Green / Rotting Flesh combo. Tyrant Guard is done. I'll get better photos soon, hopefully. The Guard has impact craters on its shield and head.

Biovore and a Lictor are primed, while several Hormagaunts are being prepped.

amazing work, one of the nicest Nid armies iv seen in ages *subsribes*

18-09-2007, 05:20

Finished the Biovore - started it after I posted the Lictor. This was especially rewarding.

Missed a few tiny things that need neatening up, mostly putting black in the carapace cracks (look at the bit above the gun-orifice and on the legs).

Now I feel obligated to work on Eldar. After these four Howling Banshees, rest assured I'll come running back to my little Nidlets!

EDIT: Forgot, I wanted to ask for opinions on the Lictor model. I want to paint the black rim around the window in a metal color. My first idea was a nice copper-patina I saw in a gorgeous Vampire Counts Fantasy log. Barring that, I'll do simple gold or silver. Opinions?

19-09-2007, 02:04
Apologies for a paintless post.

I'm planning on remaking my Sniperfex into a Biovore-like thing. It has extended carapace and enhanced senses, so I drew up a little sketchy thing during genetics class. The tubes from the eye sockets lead back into the carapace, eventually emerging and running into the eye slung under the gun barrels (something like this (http://www.hivefleetmoloch.de/pics/spike_rifle_sniper_03.jpg)).

I was going to paint my next Lictor in the normal scheme and have the one after that one be a different camo, but I think that having a Lictor in the normal scheme would kind of take away from their mystique and character. So should I sculpt some plant based around this and paint the Lictor mostly bright green/yellow jags? If so, what color should the really raised parts of the scythe-arms be?

Actually, since I can't make up my mind... maybe the side facing the plant will be the bright green, and the other half will be the normal scheme. Dunno, I'll have to think.

(Comments welcome!)

19-09-2007, 15:08
Nice repaint on the biovore, cool to see the before/after. The camo on the lictor is groovy, and I'm for green camo facing the plant on the second one. I think the rest of the body should be similar to the other lictor, that brown color (of the base?) not the bright green of the swarm's scheme. Figure he's always cloaked, with the ground if not terrain nearby.

- Salvage

19-09-2007, 19:40
Boss_Salvage, I agree with you entirely. I'll be taking that route. So one Lictor is brown/tan, one is brown/green, and the last one will be brown/???. I was thinking it'd be almost all brown and crawling over a mossy rock, the green giving the Lictor a mottled pattern. But I sort of want to have flesh hooks in action, as a homage to the original pose. Perhaps leaping off the rock, flesh hooks out, emerging into natural color on the top half while the bottom remains brown. No more point remaining hidden when you assault (gets no cover save in cc). I like that... looks real nice in my head.

I also settled on the 5 Carnifex I want.

1. Sniperfex: Venom Cannon / Barbed Strangler
2. Devilfex: Devourers / Devourers
3. Orkifex: Scything Talons / Scything Talons
4: Krootifex: Venom Cannon / Scything Talons
5: Crusherfex: Crushing Claws/ Deathspitters

Only problem is that I have conversions in mind for all of them, so my poor Magnetfex will go to waste! I suppose I'll keep using it as a Devilfex until I finish the other 4, then use it to tailor Carni #6 to whatever list I'm playing. Another Sniperfex in Apocalypse, another Devilfex in Godzilla.

Here is the original Krootifex Photoshop made a long time ago. I may have posted it in this topic, but I doubt it...

I saw this (http://album.warpshadow.com/d/27419-1/Stormfex+WIP+1.jpg) Carnifex base (WIP by Verm1s for this (http://album.warpshadow.com/d/27249-1/Stormfex+concept.jpg) awesome sketch of his in mini form) and was again reminded of my Krootifex idea. The upright stance is much more proper. Plus if I make this, I'll have all of my "purestrain" Carnifex based off of the new plastic model and the two "hybrids" based off older edition models. And you've probably noticed that I like mixing in older editions with weak fluff justifications.

So today (again in genetics) I brainstormed for the Krootifex.

Main points: Beak. Quills on head, possibly elsewhere. Venom cannon with enhanced senses scope, spike, and probably an extended barrel to somewhat mimic the Kroot rifle. Mounted on one arm and held like a rifle up near the 'Fex's head, like the Kroot in the foreground here (http://www.hivefleetmoloch.de/pics/kroot_renegades_02.jpg).

Gamewise this Krootifex would basically be a cheap extra Venom Cannon, likely staying back and hiding in cover. Hidey, fragile, cheap, but with a smidge more cc ability than the heavy shooters. Isn't that Krooty? As opposed to the running-at-the-enemy-bellowing-invulnerably Orkifex.

This took way too long to write, hopefully someone finds it interesting. If not, eh. It's mostly for me to refer back to. :D

EDIT: Forgot to mention the Crusherfex. I thought that a set of dual Deathspitters was boring, so I tried to figure out where to put them. I came up with housing them in the Crushing Claws, which I later realized is a lot like the Striking Scorpion Exarch (http://kofler.dot.at/40k/units/Eldar_Striking_Scorpion_Exarch_2.gif). I also thought that having the gun barrel protruding from the mouth might look nice, as I saved a picture of that conversion which someone else has done before. But would that be WYSIWYG for the twin-linkage? Or is twin-linkage implied by the presence of the Deathspitter at all?

Also, if the Deathspitters will be mounted elsewhere, what should go in the second arm sockets? I thought either double-mount the Crushing Claws (like the FW Stone-Crusher Carnifex), give it vestigial Hormagaunt Scything Talons, or have ammo feeds leading into the claw-arms.

Any and all input appreciated! After you do that you'll get more painted images.

I keep posting! I'm sorry!

Amazing what 15 minutes of hacking and gluing can do. :)

EDIT: Looks like I'll be getting the parts I need for the Krootifex for very cheap - found a guy with a shoddily painted old Carnifex torso and legs. No arms or head, but that's perfect! I don't need them anyway. May also wind up getting some Gaunts off of him... maybe even more, depending on how cheap they are.

Also mocked up a Deathspitter-mouthed Carnifex head. Can post pictures if anyone cares to see it.

20-09-2007, 00:54
Yes! I wanna' see it. I'm intrigued how the above carnifex is going to turn out. It looks a mess right now, but ugly duckling and all that..

20-09-2007, 13:56
Poor hacked up painted fex :cries:

But I do like the look of the stacked guns. What's going in the front arm sockets?

- Salvage

20-09-2007, 15:53
Okay, Angelwing, I'll post it up with the next group of photos. Probably won't use it, though.

Salvage, the front arms will have scything talons planted in the ground. It'll be a bit like this (http://www.hivefleetmoloch.de/pics/exocrine_01.jpg), but far less busy.

I just feel like this is much more like a giant living gunbeast, like the Biovore, instead of the old gunslinging Carnifex. It will look much better once all the parts are together, obviously, though I'm out of soft greenstuff. I only have nasty old stuff suitable for laying groundwork; no fine sculpting.

21-09-2007, 13:17
Love the series of sketches of fexes with top-mounted guns. Looking at yours again makes me want to mess up a fex or 3 in similar fashion ... or just mess with fex in general, never built the kit myself :(

- Salvage

21-09-2007, 22:02

Head is based on the old sketch I posted. The next step is to smooth the gun down a lot to bring it a bit more in line with the Biovore. I'm already afraid that so many tubes will make it look cluttered, and I don't want him him snagging any soft and vital dangly bits on a branch while squatting in a jungle sniping tanks. Better to die in glorious battle than from venom-tube hemmorhaging.

The hand-looking set of tailspikes helps keep him stable while firing.

Salvage, the 'Fex kit is wonderful to work with. Tyranid player or not, definitely fun to mess with.

I'm really liking the mix between the old and the new but not a big fan of the old carnifex...keeo up the good work

25-09-2007, 00:42
Carnifex update - looks like only a little was done, but it's actually quite a bit. Eyestubes added, headplates defined, musculature sculpted in front limbs, all limbs glued in place, glued to base, sculpting on gun, join between arms and ammo feeds sculpted, etc.

Ultimately the gun will be much smoother and will have ridges like the Biovore's cannon (you can see the start of this in the back, below the tube). It will also blend into the back carapace.

Girlfriend was over the past few days, so progress should speed up now. I'm reeeaaallly looking forward to seeing this guy done. :D

26-09-2007, 21:35
Not much interest... but another update nontheless.

After this new greenstuff dries I need to do one more sculpting session, then I can prime. New stuff: tubes connected, Biovore ridges sculpted, carapace plate on end of tail completed, gun integrated into carapace, tubing integrated into carapace back, gaps between arms and torso closed.

One thing I want opinions on... is the model's center of gravity too far forward? Should I bulk up the hoofs or make large, clawed feet?

26-09-2007, 22:05
whoah! that thing is awesome! like a giant biovore!

i love the orkifex and the first cult leader too

27-09-2007, 14:24
Hmm ... I hadn't realized the guns were mounted so high up, or maybe it took that extra bunch of GS to bulk up the gunmount for me to see it. I think you're probably ok without bulking out the rear / feet of the model, partially because I think the base is just too small to do that effectively. And bigger feet wouldn't fix the top-heavy look to it ...

So I don't think the center is too forward, but too high. But I didn't have this opinion until now, so who knows, could be the pic. What's left to GS, details on that blank gun mount?

- Salvage

27-09-2007, 21:39
It is a bit too high, you're right. I'm hoping that the paint scheme will help offset that - the gun will be mostly dark gray, so the eye will be drawn to the carapace below it. The only greenstuffing left is melding the gun to the carapace in the back and smoothing the gun out completely.

I also added a new tongue to the Carnifex on a random urge. I cut the regular tongue off and then cut off the end on an old-style lash whip. Only then did I really stop to think "what the hell am I doing?" I can't decide if I like the new one, but I sort of like the image of it fighting with its bladed tongue in close combat as its front limbs remain planted in the ground). But now I need to get enough greenstuff around the tongue to make sure it doesn't break off. But look how badly the Broodlord implant attack came out... I really don't want a blobby, ugly tongue, because it could easily become a focal point that I'd grow to hate. Oh well.

I couldn't deal with greenstuff today, so I painted the second Lictor.

I feel it looks too much like source lighting, not like camo. I may add distinct jags so it matches the plant. But for now I have more important things to paint.

Glad you guys think the Lictor camo works!

Now, finally... Sniperfex! I had so much fun Friday night that I needed most of Saturday to recover, and so got him done earlier than expected.

And here's a size comparison. Hard to tell, but the Sniperfex's head actually is a fair bit higher than the Devilfex's. That Sniperfex is one big ****!

And my next project...

30-09-2007, 23:20
huzzah! the uber-coolio-fex is finished! thats my pet name for it :)

02-10-2007, 22:29
Thanks, blood_red_sandman. :)

I'm getting a bunch of Gaunts ready for painting, most of which I got second hand to save money. Needless to say you encounter some slightly odd things with second-hand models. I have 8 Hormagaunts prepared, primed, and ready for paint. 7 Devgaunts are nearing the same condition. Prep includes removing mold lines, putting new sand on the bases, filling gaps with greenstuff (the Horms particularly had some issues with the head assemblies), removing and reposing parts where necessary, and putting on the proper biomorphs (AG on Horms, toxin sacs on Devgaunts). Don't expect any paint for a while - I'll post when the 8 Horms are finished. The Krootifex will get work when painting becomes too tedious.

But I'm really posting with a question. This (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/WIP/ArmyRepaint/magfexc.jpg) picture shows the back of the Magnetfex, and this (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/WIP/ArmyRepaint/sniperfexf.jpg) shows the back of the Sniperfex. Should I add dots to the Sniperfex? If so, should they run onto the bio-cannon? I've been feeling like the weapon is far too simplistic and, even though I hate the super-spiky-mucus-slimed-Tyranids, I'll readily admit that it looks far too clean.

Perhaps I should even bring out the greenstuff again and add details to the side. Is that required, or can I pull off something with paint alone?

Serious advice would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: For some reason the damn hosting site isn't displaying the image of the Sniperfex's back. But the question is still valid - should the gun get spots/designs?

The Laughing God
02-10-2007, 22:35
I would add some dots to the back of the carni. Looks better. Like you said I would add some dots to the big gun on his back too. Or maybe some type of cool Design.

-The Laughing God-

03-10-2007, 13:36
Alright Pekel, I'll admit I had a few doubts when you started hacking the fex up, but the end result is really fantastic. Awesome rework, the design really came out with paint on it. On the spots, yeah I think you should add them to the back. On the gun being empty, yeah it is but looking at the biovore (whose gun is nice and clean) I wonder what you'd add ... Spots would be the only thing, I wouldn't do any freehand nonsense on there.

GS I suppose is an option, maybe like the venting on the gun barrel? But really I think it needs just a little something to tie in with the body and break up that blank space.

- Salvage

04-10-2007, 00:37
The big blank gap on the gun - the flat space above where it meets the carapace - is really bothersome. The best way to solve it would have been to eliminate it instead of mounting the gun up so high. But it's too late for that... Boss, I think you're right that a little sculpting would be much better than "freehand nonsense". At this point I think I'm going to sculpt three organic buttresses on each side. They'll probably have to wind up plugging into the carapace, but I think the extra work will be worth it.

Both of you guys were right, I'll be adding spots eventually. Probably whenever I get around to the sculpting. The model's all safely packed away in my army case, deep in my dorm closet, for now. I'm not quite ready to deal with it again yet.

But I am ready to deal with this!

I also had just enough brown paint to finish the bases of the 8 Hormagaunts and 7 Devgaunts, so they're officially PIP. :)

No fans of the Krootifex, eh?

I had the idea of using a squad of Space Marine allies in my Tyranid army for Apocalypse. Rules-wise, of course. So a unit of Tyranids using SM rules, perhaps with a massive beast to transport them using the Rhino rules.

So I was putting off working on some homework, so I decided to convert one up. Here's what a NidMarine would look like, before the greenstuff.

Took about 20 minutes of rummaging through my bits, cutting, and gluing. Uses common enough parts that making a squad shouldn't be to hard, if it ever comes around to that. At the moment I have absolutely no intention of doing that - it was just made for fun.

Ton of Gaunts almost done, pics of those soon...

Nice to see the enthusiasm for the NidMarine! I replaced the left feeder-arm with a Genestealer arm (non-rending). Looks more like a Marine and will allow me to do some fun poses. Crotch also needs armor. But it shouldn't take too long to finish up, when I get around to it.

More Krootifex! The venom cannon was modified to look a bit more like a Kroot rifle and the left hand replaces the feeder tube. Note the two thumbs, like a Kroot! Foot also received vestigial toes to closer resemble Kroot feet. I was debating about how to model enhanced senses when I stumbled across some Kroot fluff saying that the quills house sensory apparatus. Bingo! I'd already modelled enhanced senses without even knowing it. Originally I was going to explain the quills by saying they prevented opponents from reaching the neck, but honestly - how many opponents kill a Carnifex by breaking its neck? This makes much more sense.

This weekend I go home, so I can grab a base for it and finish it up. I've also vowed to finish those 15 gaunts before then, so look for them tomorrow or Friday!

Gaunts. I realized before taking the picture that one had lost its toxin sac when I dropped it. Took quite a while to find it under my desk with a flashlight! I'm quite happy with the gem effect in the toxin sacs... I like it enough that I may add toxin sacs to the other arms as well. Currently only the right arms have them. The Gaunts need a teeeeny bit more detailing with Dark Angels Green over where the yellow drybrushing went outside the carapace border and on the skin by the hooves, but I'll do that another time.

And here's the NidMarine with his new arm:

14-10-2007, 03:24
Quick photoshop of the Sniperfex to show how I'm going to fix it. Gray extensions on left will be what I'll do - I just wanted to see how green looked, and I'm not fond of it.

I'm home for the weekend and I've picked up a 60mm base so that I can base and paint the Krootifex.

Also, here's some fluff on my models. Going through the gallery reminds me that someday I need to make a nice gallery of all the finished models - the Warrior's still missing blue on the toxin sacs and some neatening upon the gun, the Tyrant Guard was never really posted when I finished it, etc.

Tyranicus Astarte (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/WIP/ArmyRepaint/tyrantc.jpg) Hive Tyrant: This strain of Hive Tyrant made its first appearance after exposure to the genetic material of the Firedrakes Space Marine Chapter. Genetic analyses conducted on a corpse of this strain have revealed the presence of Astartes DNA. Variations upon the purestrain include reduced size and increased tactical and ballistic prowess.

Tyranicus Aquilus (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/WIP/ArmyRepaint/tyguarda.jpg) Tyrant Guard: Found serving as bodyguards for the Tyranicus Astarte genus, this Tyrant Guard strain also incorporates Astartes DNA. Named for the Mk VII Eagle Armor worn by the majority of Space Marines, the Tyranicus Aquilus features an anthropomorphic bearing and immense armoring and resilience. Also of note is the lash whip biomorph, designating them as a defensive breed of Guard.

Tyranicus Draconis (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/WIP/tyrantalmostdone.jpg) Hive Tyrant: Named for the dragons of legend, this massive Hive Tyrant genus possesses wings and the ability to “breathe fire” thanks to its bio-plasma biomorph. Typically seen using its mobility and raw power to hunt vehicles. DNA source unknown (presumed to be from a now-extinct xenos creature).

Tyranicus Princeps (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/WIP/ArmyRepaint/warb.jpg) Tyranid Warrior: The Tyranicus Princeps is perhaps the most unique aspect of this Splinter Fleet. These Warrior variants – utilizing human DNA – are incorporated into purestrain Warrior broods and appear to act almost as sergeants. Though their exact function is unknown, it is believed by some that they exhibit increased tactical prowess and operate more effectively than normal Warriors in the absence of Hive Tyrants or other more powerful synapse relays.

Carnifex Boletus (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/WIP/ArmyRepaint/sniperfexe.jpg) Carnifex: Unlike purestrain Carnifex, these beasts have largely internalized venom cannon and barbed strangler weapon-symbiotes. Connective tissue laces the weapons and a single eye upon them serves as the only optical sensory apparatus. Dissection has shown that this Carnifex breed has almost as much in common with the Biovore as with purestrain Carnifex.

Carnifex Krorkus (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/WIP/ArmyRepaint/orkifex.jpg) Carnifex: Distinct utilization of the Ork genome results in an enormously hardy, purely assault-oriented monster. Appears to benefit from enhanced armor, strength and toughness as well as minor regeneration capabilities.

Carnifex Knarlocii (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/WIP/ArmyRepaint/krootifexe.jpg) Carnifex: Variant Kroot DNA detected. Most prominent morphological similarities are the pronounced beak-like jaw and quills containing sensory apparatus. Tends to lurk in cover and attack using venom cannon weapon-symbiote, charging into assault when units approach.

The grey pipes really pull the gun in, well done. I was gonna say no to the green ones, but happy to see you already decided against them ;)

I've got a unit of Genestealers undergoing preparation and the Krootifex needs a bit more greenstuff before I can prime (nobody mentioned that the venom cannon had no ammo feed!). But here's some stuff.

First, my first really big conversion. I had no pin vise at the time and had no sculpting tools besides toothpicks. Plus I didn't care to paint it properly or sculpt my own bio-plasma. So, that said, here's my Tyrant before any restoration work:

Look at the shoddy paint coverage inside the vents! Anyhow, I can't find the original Tyrant head (DAMMIT) so I'll have to bitz-order a new one. I'm also probably going to get Balrog wings. Not sure about the pose I want - I fooled around in the picture I posted earlier (here (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/aaconceptart/tyrantrevamp.jpg)). Also messed around with horn ideas. I blatantly drew over the winged Tyrant from Hive Fleet Moloch here (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Tyranids/aaconceptart/tyrantrevampcolors.jpg) to test out my colors and the idea of wrist-mounted devourers so that the Tyrant would appear a bit more anthropomorphic. Also note the talons on the feet. I may just do those, without the talons on the wings. Would you be okay with the clawed feet counting as scything talons?

On a less serious note, I thought about what a Carnifex made from the DNA of an anteater (my favorite animal) would look like. It would have the deathspitter and crushing claw weapons.

If I ever had a spare Carnifex kit I'm afraid I'd be tempted to make it. The idea of a giant anteater tearing open a Monolith like a termite mound is too good to pass up.

Real updates coming soon - just looking for advice/opinions on the Tyrant restoration, as he will be the centerpiece of my entire army.

24-10-2007, 14:37
Sweet! i love the idea of the carnifex snorting up anything smaller than a marine with that wicked nose!

I was planning on painting the entire Krootifex today, but my grandmother passed away suddenly and I have to travel home. I'll finish it when I get back. In the meantime, what pattern should I put on the back? I feel like it's too plain at the moment.

25-10-2007, 20:50
i think dots are the way to go here

26-10-2007, 14:18
Spots ftw, and he does look pretty impressive with paint on him. Nice work Pek.

And sorry to hear about your grandmother, best wishes to you and your family.

29-10-2007, 20:50
this is looking good!
I like your hive tyrant, and its a good colour scheme, but i personally prefer the newer plastic warriors to the classic ones.

I am also sorry to hear about your grandmother.

30-10-2007, 00:51
I'm really impressed with all of your work, and glad I stumbled onto this. You have some great conversions and paint schemes. I like the way you've done your Genestealers to be able to ally them for Apoc or friendly games.

I was a bit unsure of the Sniperfex, but seeing it now, it really is a fine piece of work. The Krootifex although looking like Optimus Prime to me at first glance, has really come together with your paint scheme. Keep up the good work on this, and the photo's.

Almost forgot, I love the Fluff for it all.

03-11-2007, 21:37
Boss_Salvage and scarab_cake, thank you for the kind words with regards to my grandmother.

blood_red_sandman, I've decided to actually keep it plain for now. I'm very happy with the finished model.

scarab_cake, I also prefer the new ones. The old ones just have sentimental value to me.

Finished Krootifex! Took a long time because my detail brush was too lousy to neaten everything up and I had to buy a new one. Note the feeder tube for the venom cannon.

I also finished the Genestealer retinue for my Broodlord. I cut the Genestealer carapace bits in half so I'd effectively have twice as many, since I also need to use them on my Macragge 'Stealers eventually.

Next up... who knows? Maybe ELDAR??

Next up... who knows? Maybe ELDAR??

Wait so are you done with the whole army? I want to see a whole army pic then:D

07-11-2007, 03:45
The Laughing God, not at all! I'm just doing a little more Eldar work, as Tyranids have been getting all the attention lately. But after the War Walkers I'm doing are finished, I'll paint the Zoanthrope and ammo dump stratagem I just prepped for priming. I also have things to use as power generator and medicae facility stratagems but I need more old-style flat 60mm bases before I can finish them.

09-11-2007, 02:53
Alright, back to Tyranids! I haven't been entirely idle, however - I whipped up the gun for my eventual Devilfex, so I no longer have to use the magnetic one.

I've been wanting to use that old Barbed Strangler bit (from one of my old Tyranid Warriors), and the end has 4 Devourers put together. That way it's proper WYSIWYG for two sets of twin-linked Devourers. A second, modern Barbed Strangler (pulled off the original Krootifex model) was cut in half and glued on top.

Here's the gun by the magnetic Carnifex (I WILL be getting a new Carnifex to chop up for the conversion, I just don't have it yet). I didn't realize how big it was... I'll really have to hack into the armor and set it deep in the body. I learned my lesson from the Sniperfex... no more guns set too high on top of the armor.

I'm not sure about another eye-on-gun enhanced senses. I want to try something new. The little tyrannosaur-arm idea is stolen from another person's Carnifex, and the bio-plasma head will be cut to make a head which is X-TREME roaring. The second arm sockets will have ammo tubes, similar to the Sniperfex. The pose will also be dynamic and I may lengthen the legs. In games my Devilfex always winds up running around gunning down juicy targets while the Sniperfex sits unmoving in covers. So both models are being converted to suit these roles.

I want to convey the image of giant alien tyrannosaur running around with a gatling gun on its back, mowing down swathes of infantry with living worms. Does it get cooler than that?

The Laughing God
09-11-2007, 03:16
Those top mounted guns look awesome!

Can't wait to see how it turns out. The last one looks great too. Can we have a group pic of everything?

Looks like its going to be sweet!

11-11-2007, 13:54
very nice concept on the krootifex, the army's building up very well.

11-11-2007, 20:14
Still not sure about the dots - I almost took the photo, then saw a bit I needed to touch up with black. Then while I had black paint on the brush I proceeded to paint on the dots.

The Laughing God
11-11-2007, 21:14
I like the dots, makes it look better than without IMO.

11-11-2007, 21:41
Glad you like them. :)

I made a list of all my Tyranid models so I'd have a sense of where I am with the army. Green is painted, red is unpainted or in old paint (mostly the latter).

EDITED Dec. 3.

Flying Hive Tyrant
Walking Hive Tyrant
Tyrant Guard
Extended Carapace Genestealer x6
Tyranid Warrior w/ Deathspitter x3
Tyranid Warrior w/ Deathspitter
Tyranid Warrior w/Barbed Stangler
Lictor x2
Termagant x10
Termagant x10
Devgaunt x7
Devgaunt x5
Hormagaunt x16
Hormagaunt x4
Genestealer x10
Extended Carapace Genestealer x10
Ripper Swarm x6
Ravener x2
Gargoyle x10
Winged Warrior x4
Red Terror
Carnifex x4

The list is missing a few models - I have a few odd Hormagaunts and Devgaunts, plus random models like the Cultist and NidMarine. But that's the main part of the army there.

EDIT: Forgot to say that 5 Termagants and 8 Hormagaunts are being prepped now. So no pictures for quite a long time as I do this boring batch paint (unless I give in and paint a Ravener or something).

11-11-2007, 23:53
A lot of unique conversions here! I really like the sniperfex.

12-11-2007, 00:15
Ooh, cant wait to see the Red (Green) Terror

The dots on the zoanthrope are nice

16-11-2007, 22:13
Yeah, I've spent a lot of time looking at the Zoan and I'm very happy I did the spots. They've grown a lot on me and I may try them on some other larger creatures. Speaking of which, what could these POSSIBLY be for?

(The Space Marine is my brother's commander. I thought he looked like a boring Termie sergeant so I yoinked him and am in the process of making him look like a proppa Commander.)

The Laughing God
17-11-2007, 00:55
Get a Trygon! :D

Those are some big talons, you might want to put them on a scream killer fex. That would look insane with those things in the front, and then smaller ines in the back.

28-11-2007, 22:11
Get a Trygon!
I'm not rich! I can, however, afford a Carnifex... and I have a toy Snake Alien... and greenstuff... :D

I've been very busy, but I'm getting through those 13 Gaunts. I got bored with them, though, and so updated my old Warriors. They now have additional greenstuffed eyes for Enhanced Senses and Extended Carapace. They're being painted along with the Gaunts, and when they're done I'll officially have my 500 point army all painted up! Of course I also have about 500 more points in assorted models (the Carnifexes, Lictors, Hive Tyrant, etc) but it'll be nice to see a real playable force laid out in the new colors. So expect a group shot with that army quite soon.

03-12-2007, 22:51
500 point army is DONE except for the tiny bit of the Zoanthrope's base, which I need to buy Catachan Green for.

And here's the three shooty Warriors. The lead one was posted before, but his toxin sacs and things are now done. Though I just noticed I missed a tiny bit... dammit! Ah well. Someday I'll touch them up. This unit still needs another Warrior with Deathspitter and one with a Barbed Strangler, eventually.

Also made this from bitz I didn't need, as practice in case I ever get Warriors enough to make a leaping unit.

I only need to paint 6 more Termagants to be able to make my old 1,000 point army. The current one has a bit revised, though, so I'd need 4 carapace Stealers, 6 Gaunts, and my Hive Tyrant. But still - I'm getting somewhere!

The Laughing God
03-12-2007, 23:03
They look really good all together.

The leg looks cool, although you should do some greenstuff work on the joint and the bottom by the foot.

04-12-2007, 14:03
Group shot is delicious! Yea for niddy doom!

Like the bitmash on that leaping leg, very cool way to rep that upgrade. And the old skool warrior almost looks like a leader mutant at the head of that mini-swarm, with his odd-bug-out-ness and general big head ;)

- Salvage

07-12-2007, 03:41
The Laughing God, if I ever use that leg then it'll get greenstuff. For now it's just a mockup.

And the old skool warrior almost looks like a leader mutant at the head of that mini-swarm, with his odd-bug-out-ness and general big head
That's the goal! Originally I was only going to use the old Warrior when I was playing the Deathspitter unit as the HQ. But then I decided I wanted to convert another for the Winged unit, so that idea went out the window.

Remembered I never posted a picture of the finished Guard, so here it is:

That's probably the last Tyranid until after Christmas. I'm hoping for two more Carnifex (one for that Devilfex conversion and one for the Trygon) and two more Raveners. More pictures when those conversions are underway!

15-12-2007, 13:03
you, sir, are crazy!

This is all very cool. I particularly like the use of the retro models and the nid marine;)

16-12-2007, 10:42
Snake Alien has been hacked. After Christmas the Trygon shall rise!

I won't be painting any of my own Tyranids until then, but I am painting some on commission. I'll have a Hive Tyrant, Carnifex, and Lictor all done up in the Behemoth scheme coming up (hopefully soon).

17-12-2007, 16:10
Yesterday I decided I'd do the commissioned Tyranids before anything else I had to do. Being a Tyranid player, they were calling out to me.

So I did them.

All in one day!

25-12-2007, 01:36
Not much new - just some almost finished stratagems for cityfight which double as objectives for Apocalypse.

The big toxin sac is a power generator, which works by exuding an airborne steroid which is very similar in composition to the fluid contained in toxin sacs. The big devourer is an ammo store and produces a pheromone which induces an increased metabolic rate in all nearby weapon-beasts. The hive-node looking thing is a medicae facility - small Tyranid organisms drift out of it and set to work sealing up the wounds of Tyranids in their reach.

25-12-2007, 04:16
that lictor is got to be the best camo paint job I have ever seen. you are awsome, can't wait to see you do trygon

28-12-2007, 04:37
The Carnifexes still haven't arrived, so no Trygon WIP... :(

At a GW gift exchange I put in a Horus Heresy novel I had two of and got a Hellhound in return! Here it is with magnetic cult banners attached:

I also made magnetic Orky attachments so my brother can use it as a looted wagon.

28-12-2007, 15:36
Did you paint the 'hound? Cause it looks nice, and fits with the magus right there. Groovy lil' flag too.

On the 'fex above, is his head the standard smiley one from that edition? Because it doesn't look too stupidly smiley like I remember, and actually recalls Amerizilla's maw a bit (which is a good thing in my book).

The 'fex head had a lot of greenstuff added to it, so it's pretty custom. You can see it here before it was painted/ primed.

And yeah, he painted the 'Hound.

I'm Pekel's brother btw. Sup everyone ;)

28-12-2007, 17:08
Note that I DID NOT sculpt the head - the client did. And yes, I painted the Hellhound. Grays are nice and neutral, so with a few different magnetic banners I can ally the small guard force we plan on getting with Space Marines, Tyranids, Tau, Chaos, etc.

Glad you like, Boss. And Thomas, welcome to the log. ;)

29-12-2007, 07:27

The Nids are looking great, I love the vibrant green carapace. That Trygon's shaping up well, can't wait to see it finished.

02-01-2008, 09:06
Trygon progress is halted as I await a shipment of greenstuff. In the meantime I painted the Gargoyles. One still needs to be done, as its wings were donated to make a winged Warrior and the bitz order with its replacement wings hasn't arrived yet.

With Warriors:

And here's a group shot with all of my Tyranids (obviously taken before the Gargoyles were painted):

Hasan ibn Sabbah, the tail is from an old Snake Alien toy. Luke, thanks!

More sculpting...

Today I'm going to GW to pick up my bitz order. In it are two Raveners, the Gargoyle wings I was needing, plus a set of Balrog wings and a Hive Tyrant head. Any idea what those could be for?

At present:

What exactly are those zombie things?

Zoanthrope isn't painted yet - still needs more greenstuffing and basing. The psychic energy will be painted glowing a whitish-blue. Will be my first attempt at OSL.

The Fantasy models are the new Ghouls for the upcoming Vampire Counts release.

I'm missing some colors and materials here, but the Zoanthrope is basically done. Marine is, of course, from my brother's Chapter.

25-01-2008, 10:56
Pekel, I'm continually impressed by how you manage to make green and green contrast so well. :D

Great work through the whole army, I especially like the Tyrant's clawed feet (I may have to steal that idea, even though I wasn't planning a flying Tyrant) and the Zoanthrope microwaving the Space Marine. The latter is a conversion that totally shouldn't work, but somehow you've pulled it off!

30-01-2008, 23:09
So I'm stuck with nothing I can do until my brother mails me a package. I found a broken walnut shell a while ago and thought it looked like some weird Tyranid mini-mycetic spore and decided to make an objective in it. So here's a synapse-beast fetus which the Tyranids need to recover. It could also be a strategem.

Using other Genestealer parts I'm making a servitor-Genestealer to put in an Ordo Xeno Inquisitor's retinue. I'm also going to make a servo-skull from an Ork skull my brother has. Pics of the Genestealer coming soon.

Luna de hierro
30-01-2008, 23:23

I`m thinking the same thing mate, hoping to pick some up next week at GW Tokyo (hopefully they`ll have arrived/ been released). They`ve got the hunch, they`re long enough for multiple arms and the feet seem like they could be GSed into claws without too much hassle.
I have a box of skaven plague monks that I`m think of combining with the ghouls to make an abhuman/hybrid mob. I would love to share and bounce some ideas with you. :D By the way GW UK`s website has pics of the sprues and an assembly guide, I had a look the other day. I think the legs may need some cutting to get a lower stance but then again they could be covered by GSed robes.
Let me know when you get around to doing them and I let`ll you know when I get my box. I`ll try and do some prototypes up, fingers crossed they`ll be in stock next week.

Awesome flying tyrant, my first thought `Run away`, the Zonathrope with the psykic bolt is genius. Any objections if I swiped the idea for a Magus conversion I have in mind?

Should be a good long while before I try it - I've got more than enough to work on with my purestain Tyranids for the moment. But I'd love to see what you do (and of course feel free to use the psychic bolt idea on your magus!).

Speaking of what I'm doing, I got these for $28:

I've converted them to have extended carapace on the chest and toxin sacs underneath the long, straight talons (essentially turning them into giant venom injectors). In addition to the 12 Hormagaunts I'm also working on 4 carapace Genestealers, 2 Raveners, a Devilgaunt, and 2 Termagants.

13-03-2008, 23:19
The Zoantrophe is really great. Should adapt that on a Librarian in Terminator Armour.

20-03-2008, 16:41
Here's a sampling of stuff I'm working on. One Macragge 'Stealer converted to be vaulting a low wall, one converted to be standing upright with a closed mouth, a Gaunt shooting from behind a wall, and a 'Roidgaunt (old Hormagaunt with extended carapace and toxin sacs).

The wall bits are from old Megabloks sets. Hope you like!

20-03-2008, 17:16

Most are fine - the two worst got rocks glued to their bases. And all of them have the bases filled in with some odd plaster (I got them that way), though the plaster is so light that I can't imagine it doing much.

Kveld-Ulf - They do look a bit goofy, but oh well. I still think that's better than painting up 12 more of the same Hormagaunts!

razormasticator - Thanks!

Here's 4 more Genestealers:

This log is top stuff mate.
I also like th incorporation of the older nids. I have 12 of the 2nd ed termagaunts and spikerifle/strangleweb gaunts that I need to get painted up...
Anyway, noticed that you said those stealers were ones from the Battle for Macragge set. They look very well converted. I'm actually trying to convert some of them myself atm, do you have any tips for what works, like how you cut through the waist and neck?
Keep up the good work.

08-04-2008, 22:30
I simply cut the limbs as close to the body as possible using clippers, used a knife to round the edges, pinned them in place, and greenstuffed the gaps.

A few more Gaunts:

Almost done with all 12 Hormagaunts. Next I'll be doing 2 more Raveners.

15-04-2008, 23:30
Sorry, haven't been painting Tyranids lately. But here's this group of WIP models:

I may make an Ordos Xenos Inquisitor and retinue just for fun, and this Genestealer combat servitor would be in it along with an Ork servo-skull and some other fun things. The two things on the ground will serve as Tyranid flags in cityfight games that require planting flags in buildings.

16-04-2008, 13:48
Nifty stealertor but really dig the lil' thorny bugs :D

And I've been neglecting to mention that I really like the standing stealer a couple posts back. Nice repositioning there.

Simply amazing. Keep up the good work!

16-04-2008, 21:28
Just discovered this, very nice mon' :D

18-04-2008, 07:14
In between the Hormagaunts and Raveners I slapped paint on the flags. Here they are:

18-04-2008, 20:29
Very cool! Keep it up!

20-04-2008, 00:00

EDIT: Forgot to say that the Raveners still need plants on their bases.

20-04-2008, 04:08
The one on the left looks strangely out of proportion... But I like them!

20-04-2008, 05:11
for that ordo xenos guy how about a tau sage? good lookin nids too

02-05-2008, 08:34
I think I'll give the Inquisitor Eldar Exarch body armor (lighter and more flexible than power armor while still conferring a 3+ save), an Ork gun servitor (Heavy Bolter), Genestealer combat servitor, and a Veteran Guardsman with Tau gear.

Genestealer is almost ready to paint. I'm still debating what scheme to use - I don't know if I should use mine or Behemoth.

03-05-2008, 01:57
I'm really liking that Stealer Servitor, hopefully the paint brings out it's true promise.

True about the old models being a nice variation. I just recently was given a small Tyranid force with some of the models being from First Edition. Although they may look strange, they had to start somewhere!

03-05-2008, 13:08
Omfg, a chainsaw wielding 'stealer! Cheeese! :D
No but seriously, very cool

05-05-2008, 02:21
If I cast up the bottom two strategems (after removing the GW bitz), would anyone be interested in buying them? Good for cityfight (I use them as power generator and ammo dump), Apocalypse objectives, bases, or terrain.

I'm thinking like $8-$10 each. They fit on 60mm bases.

05-05-2008, 04:42
This army makes me want to stop collecting IG and start collecting tyranids.

09-05-2008, 04:26
Do it! Tyranids are the best.

Some of you may recall I posted an idea for leaping Warrior legs a long time ago. Well, guess what?

I just need spare Genestealer arms and a metal Warrior to be the brood leader.

Also, tonight I should prime my last Gargoyle (finally), the Tyranid-fetus objective, and the servitor Genestealer. Good to be home for summer. :D

nice nids, some really cool stuff you got goin on!

Group shot! Just played a 2,000 point game versus my brothers Orks (great game, was a draw) and decided to lay it all out. Here it is:

153 models, 3928 points (excluding the Genestealer Cultist, Genestealer combat servitor and Genestealer Marine). Note the two brood nests and the reclamation pool back behind the Tyrant. After repainting my entire army I'm going to get a can of dullcote and turn those crumbly old terrain pieces into fresh new ones.

I primed a bunch more models, including the completed Killer Frogs (leaping Warriors). Should have them done very soon.

11-05-2008, 10:22
These guys look great!

Especially the Tyrant and the objective markers, really nice work! :)

12-05-2008, 14:11
Thanks a lot, doghouse!

First two Killer Frogs:

The heads counts as toxin sacs and the tail tip is extended carapace.

12-05-2008, 15:32
QUITE a horde Pekel, definitely something to be proud of! You gotten to use the trygon in a game yet? Pretty crazy in my experience ...

Nice death frogs, maybe a tad funky with the stealer heads but funk != bad ;)

The army looks great. Your really put a lot of nice conversions in your army. How did the gargoyles work in the game? I've been considering converting some guants to have wings. But before I buy more I want to know if they carry their weight.

Keep it up,

ps. There must have been alot of green in that game;)

14-08-2008, 09:42
After a summer of work at the wilderness school I'm BACK! Thanks to everyone for the compliments.

You gotten to use the trygon in a game yet? Pretty crazy in my experience ...
Yep. It's a bit sad that a tooled-up Carnifex would beat it in combat, but the deep striking is very fun.

How did the gargoyles work in the game? I've been considering converting some guants to have wings.
I like them for capturing objectives, but they were more useful with 4th edition's victory points. I'd rather have 20 Termagants than 10 Gargoyles in most situations.

My very belated birthday Carnifex was picked up and I went to work on it. Here it is before any greenstuff:

The idea is that where the Sniperfex is very static in gameplay the Devilfex is very active, running from target to target. I drew from several different Devilfexes online and especially loved someone's tiny-armed version. So I took that idea and gave it two-fingered rending claws, as well as clawed feet. With the back straightened out I think it looks a lot like a bellowing Tyrannosaur. The single ridge on the back makes it look a bit sleeker, while also showing that as an elite Carnifex it doesn't burn as much energy as a lumbering heavy support one.

Hopefully greenstuffing will begin tomorrow. It's good to be back!

14-08-2008, 12:45
I love that conversion! Now get to work with the greenstuff!

14-08-2008, 14:55
I'll second Angelwings comment. The devilfex is looking real nice. Can't wait to see the final result. I would also like to have a closer look of the tiny rending claws if possible :)

16-08-2008, 00:16
Greenstuff work is being done on the Carnifex. I'll get that tiny arm shot when the greenstuff is done. I also stuck a vent-shaped horn on the head to mimic the vents running down the back, but I believe I'll tear it off.

In the meantime, I'm taking this toy:

And changing it drastically:

It'll get a lot of guns, living bombs, and use the Fighta-Bomma rules. Should be fun.

16-08-2008, 04:32
PEKEL! I was thinking about you yesterday, wondering if you were up to another fantasy army by this point ...

The devilfex is aces, truly unique beast and lots going for it. The gun particularly, niiiiice. What's it armed with, by the by? Classic "dakkafex" with 2x2 devourers + enhanced senses?

Good to see you around again man.

- Salvage

23-08-2008, 14:54
Yep, Salvage, it's a classic ES + 2xTL Devs.

I think I drank some untreated stream water while back at work, since now I'm nearly incapacitated by cramps and my stool is almost pure blood. While that puts a damper on modeling, here's some things I was fooling with a while ago:

Carnifex tendrils. My brother would take the "jellyfish stinger" excuse and let me play it as tusked or something.

These are the frills from the Snake Alien I used to make my Trygon. I think they'll make good Tyranid barricades. I also have the Alien's head, which will make a good mini Spore Chimney.

Hopefully I feel better soon - I really want to finish that Devilfex.

28-08-2008, 04:38
Remember my old magnetic Devilfex?

Since I'm converting a permanent variant, I painted up an alternate armament for the model.

Plus the tendril head for it.

I've got a lot of stuff being painted now, mostly assembly-style.

2 Devgaunts
2 Hormagaunts
6 Spinegaunts
1 Genestealer Marine
1 Gargoyle
4 Spore Mines

The Spore Mines just need basing - I have no white glue at the moment.

28-08-2008, 05:39
Just glancing though, and the newest painted Tyranid look fantastic, i love the color scheme on them!

Solun Decius
28-08-2008, 09:23
Carnifex looks good, very cool with the crushing claws.
So do you have magnets in all 4 arms and the head ? I guess the Carnifex is one of the best candidates for magnetizing, an expencive unit that can fill many different roles with different armament.

29-08-2008, 20:18
My magnetic Carnifex has a magnetic head, 4 arm sockets, carapace, adrenal glands, and tail weapons. Definitely well worth magnetizing.

The Devilfex is all converted up! I'm absolutely thrilled and right after this post I'm going to prime it. Can't wait to paint the beast. :D

29-08-2008, 20:44
I think I speak for everyone here when I say, we can't wait for you to paint it either!

Solun Decius
29-08-2008, 22:26
I'll second that!

29-08-2008, 23:20
Oh now -that- is nice.

It's like...a Carnifex....and a T-Rex...*head explodes with awesome*

What's next for this great army?

What's next for this great army?
Well, I have a bunch of Gaunts in the middle of painting. But who wants to see that? So I went to work on the Virago!

So far 3 of the 4 "hull-mounted big shootas" are modeled and the "turret-mounted twin-linked big shoota" weapon-symbiote is half-done. It's going to be eyeless and have a tube coming out of its mouth to plug into the Virago, representing its integration with the host creature. The payload of "bomms" and "burna bomms" (both converted from Spore Mines) will be modeled on the second set of arms, slung under the body and behind the final "big shoota". Still need a very large clear flying stand and some CDs for a base. Also not sure what to use as a tail yet... that's too big to do with greenstuff.

I'm really pumped to see how this turns out. Would be great to see him soaring over the rooftops in an Apocalyptic cityfight, dogfighting Fighta-Bommas and dropping acid spore-bombs on hordes of Boyz or Space Marines. :D

06-09-2008, 01:32
Still working on that flyer (and now its base), but nothing really noteworthy on that end. Still painting Gaunts, though I skipped ahead and finished the NidMarine.

And a size comparison:
