WE characters only start off with longbows and not H/W's, does this longbow count as a H/W in CC and therefore will you get the +1AS with shield?

If they don't have the hand weapon they don't get the bonus.

Everything is assumed to have a hand weapon.
So they have handweapons,so get +1 save in combat when fighting to the front and armed with a sheild as well.

Is this true as in every army book i have looked at, if they have a H/w it says so on top of any other weapons they have. In the WE book it only says Longbow for Glade Guard, characters etc...

You may assume that the WE character has a hand weapon. All models are assumed to be equipped with a hand weapon, or a similar mode of attack that allows them to fight at "normal" effect.

Some armies (OK Ogres, O&G Orcs) have alternative versions of hand weapons instead. Don't over-think it and you'll be fine.

Not all others do :)

Page 56 of the BRB tells us to assume one is present where not listed (except where noted).
