I do mainly commissions these days and I thought I would keep a running log of what I have been doing. These will be mostly historical miniatures with the occassional fantasy figure thrown in that I like to paint. To start here are some Huns and Saxons.

Thanks! I don't charge much because I love to paint and it is more a labor of love than anything else.

Oh yeah, I won't complain about getting money!

The Huns and most of the Saxons are by Wargames Foundry. There are four Saxons from West Wind productions new Age of Arthur range, and then two of them I have no idea.

WoooW Killshot!

I'm very jealous! Your miniatures have such vitality!

They seem to 'come to life' as miniatures.

I wish I can paint my ECW miniatures like that... (I haven't started on them but they are 28mm historical miniatures like these)

Great stuff

And this is for me, an, as of yet named, Hero of Dol Amroth:

I've seen the Foundry stuff unpainted and was never impressed with them. But, now that I see what they could look like when a skilled brush touches them....I'm impressed.

What's next on the painting station? Also, what brand of paints do you use?

Thanks! Up next is the last batch of Saxons I have to finish and some more Dol Amroth stuff. I mainly use vallejo paints (their Game Color and Model Color) and I have some GW paints that I am using up before switching to vallejo.

heh heh, yeah, most LotR fans said the same when they turned up ;)
perhaps a thin wash of scorched brown would look good, it looks nice now of course, but some of the armour plates are runnning into one another...

EDIT - might you have gotten it from the BGoME magazine?

I agree, the armor needs something else. I will try out the scorched brown.

I never subscribed to BGoME! I think I aquired it in some trade and just forgot about the model. :)

more nice peices i like the high elf the most :) looks clean and elegant but looks dark some how as well, which looks awsome, the white is smooth on the tabard overall stunning :) i really do enjoy looking at it! and the pose doese put this model into character.

The wizard looks quite awsome simple but yet unique not to much and not to little spot on :) and for all the rest of them look awsome but the wizard and the ELF really are my favourite

I joined the Tale of Fantasy painters and instead of a fantasy army I decided that I would paint my first Warhammer Ancient Battles army: The Flemish.

The first regiment I will complete is 24 Dismounted Milites (dismounted knights) . I finished up the first 5 models, basically test models. I will finish the remaining 19 all at once in a big batch. They aren't based because I like to multi-base my historical units.

When completed, this regiment will cost 375 points.

Here are some Dark Age Goths from an unknown manufacturer (well, to me at least). They are painted for the same client that I paint all of the historical miniatures for! Again, he requests that the spears be painted and mailed seperately so they don't bend and he does his own bases.

There are 32 of them, hard to get them into one shot:

The poses are a little monotonous, but it makes for quick painting! Besides, I think when he multi-bases them, they will look alot better as an army. I am working on some more that are more dynamic, I will post pictures when I get them done. They sure aren't Wargames Foundry models, but from 3 feet away on a gaming table, they will do the same job for 2/3 to half the cost of what Foundry is charging these days.

I finished up a number of WIPs and added an Ettin. Some will notice that I did not change bases or add snow to the bases, that is because I received great news the other day that Crusader miniatures is about to release some Late Romans. I finished these off quickly so they can go up on ebay to help raise some funds for a Late Roman army.

could you help me by describing the process you went through to achieve the white robes on A. your Wizard's horse, and B. the other footmen further down the thread.

I am having alot of trouble in painting a nicely layered white.

I see you use the bluer end of the shading scale, rather than the greys?

thanks alot in advance!

Sorry it took so long to reply, I don't get many replies to my logs.

For the wizard's horse I used Azure Blue from Vallejo paints and just did many (many) layers of white. I started with blue for the wizard to keep the blue theme I had going. The key was to use very thin layers so it doesn't clump up. I don't recommend it for rank and file troops.

The elven warrior was more along the lines of the way GW does their white, codex grey high lighted up to white.

My advice for white is thin layers.

The horse isn't that bad in the flesh. I think it as the angle and the lighting.

Thanks! The Germans are from Brigade Games. I mixed white glue and white paint and globbed it on the base and then dipped it in baking soda. I think baking soda is called something else across the pond though.

Harry

A wash of the original colour will 'blend' the highlights on that horse.

He's right you know ... The Germans look great.

I like the handgunner too. I feel like the feather needs a slpash of colour. Maybe just becaus eit si against a white background? Maybe because those being Averland colours ... Averlanders were always a bit 'flash' in the background.

Wonderful stuff as always.

If you are going for Empire rather than historical Landschnects then the sash should really be red on the standard bearer and I think (for me) he could use some more gilt trim on his armour. The Captain is perfection.

Thanks Harry, I will give him some more attention.

Lord Dan
02-01-2009, 00:15
For once I must disagree with Harry. I think the sash on the standard bearer is fantastic, especially with the captain with the red sash next to him. The color contrast works very well, and I think the red plume/ red in the standard itself tie him to the unit quite nicely. I do agree, however, that his armor could use another once-over with some metallic paint.

The Irish look mean.

Practice! :) I'm 28 and I've been painting since i was 15, but I seriously began about 9 years ago.

I get this question a lot and should time myself one time to see how long it takes me from start to finish. I do batch painting from anywhere from 4 to 8 models. I probably average about 1.5 hrs per figure. I paint to relax so I don't speed paint.

Very Nice.
Interesting to see some of your usual muted, neutral colours on fantasy minis.
Favorites for me are those more muted ones. Middle three top row, first two bottom row.
They look great.
Also because they use your 'typical pallette' they seem to have your signiture.

Thanks Harry, I tried to get away from using a muted pallette but they are the only paints I have. :) I had a pot of Bad Moon Yellow I was going to use for the yellow, but it was completely dried out and no amount of water was going to bring it back. :cries:

Thanks Dan. I hope one day to get back into Fantasy gaming (or any gaming in general). Where I am currently living there aren't any gamers really so it is hard to get the motivation to paint an army (let alone two of them!). :)

Is that a paper banner? It looks really cool. Assuming this is another commission, if your client is planning on painting some kind of army symbol on the banner I would recommend he just leave it black. It's very striking.

Killshot
15-02-2010, 05:43
Thanks again Lord Dan. Yes, it is a paper banner. I am not sure if the client is going to paint anything on the banner, but I will pass on your recommendation. I like the plain, dark banners for "barbarians" myself. Probably watched King Arthur one too many times and the "saxons" all carried dark banners.

I know there are some who have been waiting for the bloodletters, but they continue to stare banefully at me from my painting desk. What I have painted:

Dark Age Saxon warriors, from Musketeer Miniatures and Gripping Beast:

Lord Dan
26-05-2010, 04:16
Wow! Where to start... I guess top to bottom makes sense.

The saxons are really cool. In particular I like the pose of the chief with the scale armor and the "get back our I'll stab ya!" stance of the guy second from the right. They're some fantastic models with, again, some fantastic paint jobs, but I have to ask: How come the guy in the back/middle is missing half his spear, and how come the guy with the red cape is the only model with blood splatter?

Moving on to the cabal I'm stunned by the red dress, obviously, and love the skin tone you've given both vampires. I'm about to paint a vampire, and would like something similar. Any chance you could give me the formula for the skin? :)
I think the reaper werewolf is a terrible model that you've managed to breathe some life into, and I like the skin tone shading you've achieved on the wing (particularly near those bony supports) of the vampire/ghoul thing.

Finally that sorcerer is absolutely fantastic, and that color scheme deserves an entire army unto itself.

And I'm not sure if I've asked this earlier in your log, but what's the process you use on your bases? Okay, I'll stop talking now.

Killshot
26-05-2010, 05:01
Thanks Lord Dan!

Regarding the Saxons, the guy in the second rank has a throwing axe in his hand (can't see the axe head in the picture) and I envisioned him in the process of throwing the axe so that is why it is placed in his hand like that. As far as the Saxon with the blood splatter, as I was painting the miniatures his demeanor gave me the impression he had just hacked down an enemy champion in a duel while the men in the warband watched. He is now stalking and looking for more challengers. Kind of a little story that played in my mind.

The vampress in red skin tone started with a base coat of white primer, a light wash of black (mainly around the eyes and mouth), and then I used vallejo game color Elfic Flesh. Following elfic flesh, a wash of blue ink. Then elfic flesh/ with vallejo model color ivory, and then a final highlight of ivory.

Cliff notes:
White
Black wash
Elfic flesh
blue was
elfic flesh/ivory
ivory

I fully agree about the werewolf, it is pretty horrid, but it did paint up fairly well. I ran out of gloss varnish otherwise I would've given his teeth a shine.

The color scheme for the wizard came from an idea that he has the ability to communicate with bears and call them when threatened.

For the bases the first two colors are from Walmart's Arts and Crafts section. I hate using my expensive model paints on sand. I start with Burnt Umber, followed by Teddy Bear Brown. Finally I use Vallejo Stone Grey or Medium Grey (they are pretty close). The rim of the base is painted in Graveyard Earth.

Cliff Notes:

Teddy Bear Brown
Stone Gray or Medium Grey

I love the saxons. the shields are mint. if I were to go back to some of your earlier historicals I remember I could see the brush strokes very clearly. You have improved your technique or chosen smaller colour transitions to great effect. My only gripe with these guys is the variation in base thickness. The painting itself is spot on.

Love those Heresy Vamps, they do some wonderful 'warhammery' figures with that bit of cartoon about them.

Really like the reaper wizard ... and the paint job. The staff looks a bit 'dry' would it benefit from a final wash of something? But I really am being picky ... he looks great.

26-05-2010, 11:19
Very good work as usual. I agree with Dan that the werewolf is a bad mini (IMNSHO at least). The best Reaper werewolf IMO is Jean Paul (http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Werewolf%20Lycanthrope%20Male/price/02747).

Excellent work as usual Killshot.

The Saxon's are very impressive, I've got a few Saxons from Renegade Miniatures to paint myself. After seeing yours I'm tempted to dig them out and paint a few.

The Undead Cabal are looking rather good too. I like the pale blue skin tone to the Vampress. It contrast's rather well with the rich red of her dress.

Also, apologies if this has been asked before. I was just wandering where you get the miniatures for a very british civil war from?

Killshot

The VBCW figures are a combination of Musketeer Miniatures and Empress Miniatures Spanish Civil War line. All of the figures were sculpted by Paul Hicks and he has a very consistant size he sculpts in so all of the figures work very well together.

I have browsed through your thread and overall I am amazed by your work. I must say that I think you have improved your style and skills significantly over the three years since you started the thread (and they weren't bad at all in 2007!).

I agree with EmperorNorton that it is also great to see some more uncommon miniatures painted to such a high standard!

Just out of curiosity, can I ask you approximately how much time you spend per miniature (like the Dixon guy above with the club) assuming you paint a bunch at the same time?

mrtn: It's always nice to hear from a regular! Thanks! :)

Harry: Captain America is from What the? Miniatures and was a special edition (along with Bucky). He does have a not-Red Skull. He specializes in Weird War War II gaming which is something that is starting to really interest me. I've been looking at the Artizan Design WWII range and Pulp range for the project along with Incursion Miniatures. Not 100% when or if I will really start it though. :)

Emperor Norton: VBCW stands for A Very British Civil War and is a alternate history that takes place between WWI and WWII pitting English fascist forces against socialist forces.

Qvistus: Thank you for looking through my thread and I agree that I've improved over the years. I occassionally look through the entire thread myself and notice the same thing.
