In anticipation of borrowing this game from my friend, and holding onto it for the rest of the summer, I have to ask...can it be played without a joystick? I know, I know, it might sound stupid, but I once thought X-COM Interceptor required a joystick, only to find that it didn't....
So, what's the verdict?

I'm pretty sure it requires a joystick. Very pretty sure. It's a fantastic game though, and well worth even a small investment in a relatively cheap joystick.

In fact, I may just start up the old machine(from ~1997!) and crack out the old XWA!( the trouble being my old joystick won't affix to this newer beast)

Never tried it without, so i'm not exactly sure, but it would be damn hard to play without one. Even with one i found without a 3-axis stick you were pretty screwed in the game as every other ship will simply out manouver you.

Maybe you could borrow your friend's joystick as well (if he's got one, that is)?

Yeah, I suppose I could do, it's just a hassle "hey, can I borrow your X-Wing Alliance?....oh, and your joystick too....oh and..." etc.

Jedi if you look in the right forums you can probably find a way to get those games working. I've seen whole communities before that are geared towards getting ancient games working on modern pc's.

And yes X-wing alliance does require a joystick without a doubt. Playing it without one would be rubbish anyway trust me.

Awesome game though, think I might borrow it off my mate again sometime soon...
