Hi, my name's Daemonslave, and I have a problem.

I buy 40k models all the time yet I have millions waiting to paint. I am hoping that this log will get me to finally sort myself out and get painting.

If I don't update for a while please hurl abuse my way - I need motivation!:p

At the moment, my main three armies are Ultramarines, Dark Angels and Death Guard - But I have many more models too.

I am currently (almost finished) working on Azrael;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/Azrael-1.jpg

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/Azrael-2.jpg

Once finished I am open to requests out of the following models;

FW Great Unclean One (about a third done)
DA Dreadnought (hardly started)
Squad of Ultra Terminators (almost done)
Classic Plague Marines (not even undercoated)
Typhus (sculpted by Scibor)
Armorcast titan [Nurgle] (not much done)
DA Land Raider (undercoated)

or suggest a few things and (if I have the models) I can paint them.

Wow... that's pretty.

The picture as it is now makes me laugh. Azrael paid his left arm to kill that Genestealer.

That models is awesome! That has to be the best version of him that I have ever seen!:eek:

If the rest of your armies look 1/2 that good I will be amazed. :D

That is truly great! Looking forward to seeing more and I'm suscribing to this thread.

oh and for a wee bit of criticism, you spent all the time on the figure and making it look so awesome on painting, but on the genestealers back there is a pretty noticeable mold line.

25-05-2007, 08:11
Thanks for the comments, guys. I'll update as soon as possible and see if I can get a few better pics, these are not the best.

@Norsehawk, if you mean the bit between the eybrows, its not actually a mould line it's a few bonybits on the model itself (though in the picture it does look like a mould line).

There is a mold line down on the genestealers back, on the narrow lighter colored part and going down the 'ribs.'

I like the piece but the colors look thick and dusty. Maybe it's the picture.

Very good looking Azrael BTW... :D

I started this model literally years ago, painted parts of it, and have only recently redone certain parts. That's why, I think, some parts do look a bit dusty and thick (since I have gone over older layers of paint - tut, tut). Plus I like to think I have improved over those years, so some parts may look a bit 'blotchy' next to others.

Once the banner is done (something which is done from scratch and has not had any parts repainted) I will post some pictures of it. Hopefully it will give a better picture of my current painting level.

Update time!

First things first, I knew I had forgotten something when I did my first post, my work area;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/Work-area.jpg

Anyway, back to Azrael. I have now finished both arms and his plasma gun arm has been surgically reattached.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/azrael-3.jpg

I am now working on the banner, here's my WIP;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/az-banner.jpg

I am now hoping to finish Az very soon, so any suggestions about who to paint next would be appreciated.

Here's the list again;

FW Great Unclean One (about a third done)
DA Dreadnought (hardly started)
Squad of Ultra Terminators (almost done)
Classic Plague Marines (not even undercoated)
Typhus (sculpted by Scibor)
Armorcast titan [Nurgle] (not much done)
DA Land Raider (undercoated)

or suggest a few things and (if I have the models) I can paint them.

Such as;

Ltd ed. Skullz Fabricator General
Centurius
Classic Khorne Berzerkers (T-Tauri's old models)
Kharn the Betrayer
Fabius Bile

or whoever you can think of. I have nearly all the special character models.

Yeh he looks very old school which is always good.

Centurious? As in ltd edition legion of the damned sargeant Centurious?

I'm torn - I wana see someone with an old school style paint him, but then again after doing that little list above your tallent will go up a few notches... hmmmm

Yeh he looks very old school which is always good.

Hmmm. I'm curious, how would you define old school?

Centurious? As in ltd edition legion of the damned sargeant Centurious?

Yep, the one and the same. I have a number of other limited models too, such as the Ad Mech available through the Skulz promotion (as well as the Ultra standard bearer).

Hmmm. I'm curious, how would you define old school? I believe Mike McVey did this (http://uk.games-workshop.com/spacemarines/darkangels-diorama/1/) diorama back in 2nd Edition - the colours and talent employed only make me think of that edition.

Oh, OK. I did actually use that diorama as a colour scheme. I thought he was referring to my painting style or use of metallic paint (my NMM needs a lot of work).

i love the use of purple on the robes, something typically not seen on dark angels. combined with the purple on the genestealer it really breaks up the model with splashes of color. i must say i'm not a fan of the combi bolter though. the bright colors make it look a little too much like a supersoaker...

Honestly, my favorite part of the whole thing is the base. However, the blending is quite well done on the fiery parts, and the painting as a whole is excellent. Also, the banner is great.

asmodai_dark86

Yeh Bodhi's hit it on the head - its very Mike McVey which seems more naturally 40k then some of the recent eavy metal stuff

Daemonslave
30-05-2007, 22:53
Right, it's not much of an update but I just thought that I would let people know that I have decided to get my Ultramarine terminators finished. I did have a request to do Centurius (sort of) but I would prefer to get models painted belonging to one of my three main armies first.

If you want some WIP shots let me know.

My main reason for this update, however is a bit more to do with me showing off a new model purchased off ebay. It is a model I have adored since I first saw it on CMON and when it became available for just under 50 I couldn't resist.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/Runepriest1.jpg

I don't like the axe, so I intend to replace it with a bolter, but apart from that it is stunning. Perhaps I can do a WIP of that too.

Daemonslave
02-06-2007, 20:15
Right, I went a bit off topic last post, but I have pics now to rectify it (hopefully).

Here's my Ultramarine terminator squad, they have previously been painted to a gaming standard, but I want to spend some more time on them. You might see some bits of grass still stuck to some of the models legs, that is from their old bases and will not come off (not without scraping the paint off anyway), so I will try and add more grass on the newer bases in the same positions.

Here's a group shot:

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/term1.jpg

Term with storm bolter

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/term3.jpg

and another term lacking an arm at the moment.

Here's some close ups of my WIP Seargent (I've chopped the old paper banner off and it will be replaced with a banner from the plastic terminators sprue)

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/term5.jpg

and

plus a close up of the banner in progress;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/termbanner.jpg

Does anyone know a good way of blending in yellows with a dark colour? I have had a few problems as you can probably see from the picture of the banner.

As always, any comments would be appreciated,

Cheers, Daemonslave

Fantastic Azrael model (love the dead Genestealer), and the Terminators are looking good too, very high tabletop standard you've got!

I'm no expert on blending so I'll leave the advice to those who are. Looking forward to more.:)

Sorry for the long wait before an update, but have been busy with work related stuff.:mad: But, I'm on my holidays now and I've been busy.

I've given up on my terminator squad, for now, *slaps wrist* but I felt like doing some characters (rather than the monotonous squad type models) and I think you will be pleased with the results (I am, anyway).

Anyway, enough rambling, here's what I've been working on;

This has given me a good chance to practise using NMM, since there is plenty of metal parts on these models and I was quite pleased with how the gold came out. The silver was not that well done, if I am honest and is something that I need to work on, but all in all, I am pleased with the outcome.

P.S. Standard bearer is still a work in progress, but should be completed soon. Pics to follow.

That NMM on the honor guard look great, plus the hemming on Calgar's cloak looks excellent. Are you going to be applying any text to the scrollwork, names, litanies, etc?

Thank you. I must confess to cheating on the cape, though;- the '"u"s are transfers (I just painted the lines).

As for text, I'm not too good at doing writing, but I suppose I'll have to.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Ok, update time.

Here's the Standard Bearer I promised;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/helveticus.jpg

I don't know why the scrolls with the writing on looks so dark; it looks better in real life (I guess my photography skills need some work, too!)

Any suggestions as to what I should write on the banner itself, I hate doing writing, so the more spaces the better:p

I have also wrote on some of the scrolls;

Plus the Emperor's Champion shoulder guard;

Though I now need some suggestions.

What should I write on the Emp's champ leg scroll (bear in ming that it is only small). Any good three/four letter latin words you can think of?

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/emp-champ-leg.jpg

Plus I also need suggestions for the Honour Guards shoulder pads.

Regarding my Ultramarine honour guard, I have added some writing to one of the models' shoulder pads;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/hg1w.jpg

(It says 'Presul' which for those who are not fluent in Latin, means protector)

On his other shoulder pad I just added a million purity seals (a bit of a nightmare to paint tbh);

Dear God-Emperor!

I am so glad I sent the Saint your way...wow, you really did the model justice. She'll have a great spot amongst my armies.

I just finished reading the Vostroyan novel "Rebel Winter" and it appears the Vostroyans have a patron saint called the "Grey Lady". She fits perfectly in color scheme.

Your model btw, is primed and ready for paint. With the addition of some foundation paints, I can start going to town on him.

24-02-2008, 22:11
Hi, it's been ages since I've posted on here, real-life has gotten in the way!

I've pushed my Ultramarines to the side for the moment, I was getting fed up with them and I didn't want to rush and do a half arsed job. Though, I did spoil myself and treated myself to this glorious model from ebay.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/p.jpg

Anyway, enough bragging - let's see what I've been doing. I've started work on a Forgeworld Great Unclean One, a fantastic sculpt, but the amount of detail on it is rediculous. It takes me about half an hour just to do small parts of him - there's sores and boils and other nastiness everywhere! I'm quite far along at this stage and I only just realised that I could shove it in my painting log (duh!).

Here's the base - it's pretty much finished, I'll probably add a few Nurglings once I've glued the GUO on it.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/DSCN0464.jpg

I started off spraying him white and then going over the whole skin parts with a green wash. Here's his back (nothing done so far). As you'll see I've painted the bloody bits black at the moment.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/DSCN0465.jpg

Here's his front (which has had a bit more work done to it)

A quick update on the GUO, I've finally finished his guts.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/guts.jpg

I'm now a bit unsure what to do with the nurgling holding the intestine. The brown looks too dark, but flesh colour makes him blend in too much to the colour of the intestine. I obviously don't want him green since he would disappear against the green GUO so what colour do you think? A very pale skin, almost white nurgling?

I've (yet again) given up painting the GUO. There's so much detail that I spend hours doing parts and it doesn't look as if I've done anything!:(

So I've decided to go for something nice and easy - lot's of flat parts, etc. so I'm doing a DA Dread. Here he is so far;

Well, I've got an Eldar Titan waiting in the wings, I'll post a pic tomorrow of my painted Wraithlord to show you the scheme I am thinking of using. (But this will be a while yet).

I've also recently purchased a Warhound off ebay (damn you Forgeworld!), though that is also not going to be touched for a while.

At the moment I want to get my DA dread finished, my Ultra standard bearer done, my GUO done, probably a DA Land Raider and then maybe start on a FW Avatar (Though FW are releasing Death Guard Terminator bodies and I might have to get them, grrrr....)

I'll take a few pics of random models while I'm at it - and prove to you that Abaddon's claw can be made to look ok!

Thanks for the positive comments guys. Still no suggestions on what to write on the banner (around the 6 letter mark)?

Anyway as promised here's my Wraithlord (who although I painted a few years ago, is still one of my personal favourites). I'm thinking of using this paint scheme on an Eldar titan one day.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/ed.jpg

I also said that it was possible to get Abaddons claw to look ok, I like to think that I have achieved that here;

and a close up;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/ab1.jpg

I also thought I would chuck in a photo of an Avatar, don't know why I picked him;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/av.jpg

All in all my new camera isn't too bad. It's slightly sharper than the old one I think, but not a huge difference. The best thing about it is that it doesn't drain my batteries anywhere near as quick - which is always a good thing!

Any comments are, as always, welcome.

For Dark Angels? Surely you want something like 'Atone', 'Truth' or 'Punish'?

I know the one you mean, it was the design I, err, borrowed. It was an award winning model from the '94 Games Day Golden Demon (I think).

Here's an update to how my dread is progressing. I still need your suggestions for the banners guys - help!

I think I will name him Ramiel, so I might put this name on the standard (number 1). So what should I put on 2 and 3? (Bare in mind the size of them).

Hmm, personally I'd put the name of the interred Marine on the sarcophagus's banner, but that's just my take on it.
I'd search for traits that fit a Dreadnought and see if any of them sound good in the Latin translation. Wisdom, ancient, venerable, etc. etc.

Looking good though, the seals are great and the white is fantastic!

Daemonslave

Right, I've now finished my armless dread (I'm going to have magnatised arms so I can swap what he is armed with).

As suggested, I put the dreads name (Ramiel) on the sarcophagus (not my best effort but it was a bit of a squeeze) and I decided to write 'priscus' on the banner which means venerable. On the leg I wrote 'primo' which means first (which as I'm sure you all know was the name of the Dark Angels before El'Jonson renamed them.

I also need your advice on what to do next, here's a list;

DA Land Raider with FW doors
DA Forgeworld Dread
FW Avatar
FW Eldar Titan (I'm thinking of using the Wraithlord scheme above)
FW Bloodthirster
FW GUO (carry on with him - but I'll probably give up - there's too much detail)

plus I have lots of normal mini's to finish off (such as my ultra standard bearer, etc.), which I'll do while doing a larger project (one of the above).

On a completely unrelated subject, I wanted to try out some new black car primer on a FW model to see how it would come out (which worked quite well). Seeing my Black Legion dreadnought undercoated I had the sudden urge to try out the NMM gold method I used on my Ultra Honour guard on a larger area. Personally I was quite pleased with how it came out.

Thanks very much.

The NMM was done by covering a black undercoat with a thin dark flesh. This was then covered by a layer of orc brown. Then I applied a strong wash of chestnut ink, making sure that it pooled in areas that I wanted it to (using a brush to steer it away from edges, etc.). I then used a thin layer of white to highlight the edges (and the bolts) and then gave it a few washes of thinned out yellow glaze (GW should never have stopped producing this - it's great!).

Thanks. I've been painting since I was 12 which is 15 years now *cries at feeling so old*, though I did have a few years gap, around about when third ed. came out, spending my money on alcohol and nightclubs rather than toy soldiers.

So, any requests?

(I know, before you say it - the gold looks terrible. I agree that in the pic it does (but it does look better in real life - though still a bit out of place). Any suggestions for an alternative colour?

As for my next project, I must confess to being tempted to start the Bloodthirster as requested, but I opted for something else. Here's a clue - it's base (WIP);

Right c'mon guys (and gals) I need your help. I'm not sure of an exact colour scheme for my titan. Here he is so far (not much done);

Now, I want to use a dark fading blue with lightning/stars etc on the main portions of the legs, similar to the Wraithlord I posted earlier, but I'm not sure about colours for other bits such as the feet and the groin area.

I'm thinking a bone colour like the knee pad for the feet, any other suggestions?

Regarding the Rune Priest I bought him off ebay and just altered a few bits. As far as I can tell it's Kharn's body, Ahrimans staff, a warhammer banner (not sure which) and I'm not sure where the head came from (the hair is greenstuff).

Light of the Emperor

Hmm...perhaps warlock and liche purple? If you add black and then fade from your blues to purples, you could really pull off a cosmic scheme complete with the stars and lightning. The colors aren't too different so they won't pull the eye away.

I remember a wraithlord model that won a golden daemon waaaay back. I think its in the 3rd edition eldar codex too. It has the faded blue with the stars and then orange bitz thrown in. Orange is the complementary color of blue but I don't know if that fits your craftworld (should you have one).

Yes, the one you mean is where I pinched my Wraithlord colour scheme from.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/ed.jpg

As for a craftworld, even though it might be wrong fluff-wise, I want to paint my Titans/Wraithlord/Wraithguard differently to the colour scheme of the guardians and tanks (aspect warriors have different colour schemes anyway).

Daemonslave
09-07-2008, 22:37
Anyway, pushing the fluff wrongness aside, I've decided to have each titan/wraithlord/wraithguard painted in roughly the same style as the one above.

Here's my progress on the titan so far.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/titlegpainted.jpg

On my Writhlord I have blue feet, but I don't think that will go well with the base. I think I will paint it bone. But such a large area of bone would need to include something to stop it looking so bland. I could include some runes, which I plan on including on the knee pad, or I could do some Mehndi style patters.

Any ideas?

Light of the Emperor
09-07-2008, 23:09

Here you go;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/colourtest.jpg

I must confess to not being overly keen on the blue rune idea, perhaps black might look better, but I must confess to quite liking the spiral Mehndi pattern (though I wouldn't have it as cluttered).

If you like the patterned effect what sort of style would you think would work best?

Hi guys,

Please excuse the thread necromancy, but since it's my own log I assume it's ok. This past year has been really busy, with me moving house and all the renovation work that goes with it, so I have gotten very little stuff painted (though I have still been buying), but now that I'm finally getting settled, the painting bug has returned, so I thought I would reopen my old log.

I've just skimmed through the last few projects I was working on and realise that almost nothing has been done to them from where I last posted, so expect me to pick up where I left off on those fronts, but first, I decided to take on a challenge - the Ultraforge Vrock.

While I don't really expect to finish it before the painting competition deadline (which is why I originally started it) and don't actually expect to finish it anytime soon (I paint slow and have no holidays coming up), I thought I would make a log of my efforts at least.

Here's what the model looks like assembled;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/TV01_2.jpg

and here's my progress so far;

P.S. I am not sponsored in any way by Ultraforge! :p

Missed this thread the first time around, Daemonslave, and I'm kicking myself now - some real treats in here!

Loving the Dark Angel dreads (an inspired thing, the use of the cloth to tie with their power armoured brethren) and, as a fellow Eldar collector, the Revenant is a real gem so far... now that the Ultraforge big-bird has you inspired, and the house is settled, I'd love to see the titan get some more attention!

I have two revenants that are sitting primed and ready for some colour, and as I fancy an Iyandan type approach, I could certainly do with inspiration from a project as ambitious as yours!

Looking forward to more soon!

Thanks for all the comments guys, but once again I am giving up on a project. I'm a lazy ass who needs motivation and I get quickly tired of things with lots of detail. I will return to the Vrock, as well as my Eldar Titan and GUO but for now, I want to get some easy bits finished instead - such as weapon arms for my Dark Angel Dreads.

Also, with the ever nearing release of planetstrike and the nice scenery due to come out with that I have been playing with the idea of creating my own cities of death board (and finally using all those Forgeworld buildings I have purchased).

I have decided to make it a modular board so that there are many combinations for setting it up and I began with my (Forgeworld) road system;

Started off quite well;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/road1.jpg

Then went downhill;

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/road-3.jpg

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/Daemonslave/road2.jpg

All in all, an epic failure. I have since decided to alter the size of each board to 50cm x 50cm and will use a stronger material (such as hardboard) rather than using floor tiles, which warped really bad because of the glue (which I only slightly watered down).

Omg, it's great to see you back! I assume nothing has been done to the Titan;)? That Vrock is AMAZING! I can't wait to see it all painted up, should be epic.
