View Full Version : Generals?

ok, you might think that I'm mad for even considering this. but does your army actually have to have a general as a character? Or can you just use a unit champion?
In a 300 points skirmish list, do you really want a guy that can fight pretty well, or 10 more average guys? It's just not worth it.

but is it within the rules to use no general, or a champion as the general?

in my army book it says "an army must include at least one character: the general" and i suspect it says it in all other army books too.

however i think in the rules for warbands (or something like that) in very small games you can use a champion as the general. i'd check the rules on the gw site.

ok, heres my understanding. In a regular battle with the normal army list, the General must be a character (more often than not the character with the highest leadership, though not always such as with high elves) in this situation you cannot use a unit champion as your general

However, in a skirmish game, you do not require any characters, and at 300 points your list must contain at least 2 core models and no lords. the rest is up to you

oh yeah and that's the other thing, so you dont have to have the general (in proper games) with the highest leadership.

In a 'normal' game you are required to take a character to be your general. A couple years back rules for small 'Warbands' games were released in WD that allowed you to use a unit chamipon as your general. Those rules have since been updated for 7th Edition and can be found on the GWUS website here:

http://us.games-workshop.com/games/warhammer/gaming/warbands/warbands.htm

Hope that helps.

Also, most armies require the character with the highest leadership to be the general.

However, some characters are not eligible to be generals, even though they would have the highest leadership.

the dragon is possesses by a Lord of Change who can hapilly be a general is chosen from the main armylist; it's more the said Dragon's penchant for turning on the chaos army it's part of IMO for it not to be the general, than because it's a possesed dragons.
Rememeber possessed other things can also hapilly be the general (Exalted Deamon)

Vampire thralls can be the general in 2 circumstances; Either a Nechrach Thrall wth Nehekara's Noble Blood, or a Von Carstein Thrall in the Army of Sylvania.

But to add to the "no generals" list...

or a battle standard
or the possessed dragon...

Actually, battle standards are not denied the position as army general by default, but most army books specify specifically that the hero carrying the army battle standard cannot be the army general.

I am wondering about the Foe-Render in bray-shaman army. The bray shaman have ld 6 and the Foe-render (beastherd unit champion) has ld 7.

Although not a character, he is the model with the highest ld. And if the bray shaman were in his unit, they would use his ld.

Thoughts anyone.

Well... if you have Morghur (sp?) your army can't have a general at all.
