Hey there fellow Portent... nope, Warseer er, guys!

I'm back again with more of my character sketches and AFV doodles, I'm hosting them elsewhere though this time.

Check out my gallery at DeviantArt (http://stugmeister.deviantart.com/scraps/)

I'll keep you guys updated as to when I get more artwork up. Tell me what you think.

So I've posted some more pix up on DeviantART (http://stugmeister.deviantart.com/scraps/).

Some more Chimera variants and a couple of characters.

It looks pretty good Stug!

I must say that I love that Dust Nomad!

Keep it up.

Oh, and between, have you noticed how few people there is that actually pay a visit to this part of the forum? It's a shame really that only few to none comment peoples work they put up here...

Thanks Judski!

I must admit that a lot of the pics I'm putting on DeviantArt are ones that've been posted on Portent before the fall, but new ones will be forthcoming!!!

Cheers for the comment on DeviantArt RB666. :D

BTW, if anybody has any requests I'm eager to please - I can find it difficult to think of new things to sketch. So, just ask and I'll see what I can do.

CELS

 Requests!? Oh, I love it when artists ask about requests!

How about Inquisitorial storm-troopers? I always felt they needed a distinct look, rather than just wearing Kasrkin armour, or the standard IG armour. They need a seperate look, to convey that they are the army of the Inquisition itself!

Right, more pics up. As per CELS' request here're some Storm Trooper pics, although not Inquisitorial they are ones that I already had done.

Don't worry though CELS , I am working on yours still!

Anyway, check these out;

Great stuff. Looks a lot more like the traditional Storm troopers from 2nd edition. The green beret types. Looking forward to seeing the Inquisitiorial ones ;)

I'm particularly fond of the way you draw bolters like they're huge! I mean, those things are big even in the hands of Space Marines, so to normal soldiers they'd be more like a support weapon than a standard infantry rifle. Most artists tend to draw small bolters, which I think is a shame.

I love your style. and the materials you use get a look that I wish I could get with pencil.

But mist of all I like the clothes and stances you have for things. They're so elaborate or unique that I can help but be transfixed.... great stuff.

StugMeister
27-08-2005, 15:07
Thanks for the comments Artemis_Quinn!

I use just a bog-standard biro pen for most, if not all of my pics. To colour them I do it in Photoshop with a multiply layer.

@CELS; I've got a few Inquisitorial Storm Troop pics done now so the moment I get them scanned they'll be up!

CELS

CELS!

I have six Inquisitorial StormTrooper sketches scanned and up on DeviantArt!

Here they are, I've tried to make them kinda different from the bog-standard IG ones.

CELS

Oooh, good stuff, StugMeister. I think you especially hit the nail on its head with Storm Trooper 2. That is exactly what I imagine them to look like. Of course, all the other ones are excellent too. (Although number 4 looks a bit strange in terms of anatomy... :))

Say, would you mind if I used your illustrations for the Anargo Sector Project? You would be given full credit, of course, just like all our other artists.

StugMeister
04-09-2005, 12:06
You sure can CELS!

As for number 4, i think its his pose that kinda went wrong - I wanted to make him look like he was stalking prey but unfortunately he seems more like he's about to fall over.

Right, anymore requests from anyone else? Or CELS - any more stuff u fancy seeing?

malika
04-09-2005, 12:59
I know you can make very kick ass vehicles, so what about Sentinels? Perhaps Elysian ones dropping onto the battlefield from the air or something?

Im also curious how you would make servitors :chrome:

StugMeister
04-09-2005, 15:58

Interesting... I must think about this one. Looks like some research on WWII airdropped supples and tanks is in order!

Im also curious how you would make servitors :chrome:

Erm, are we talking about the process of carving up a body and reconstructing it as a Servitor?

Or are you just interested in how I'd draw one? :p :D

CELS
04-09-2005, 16:18
If I may be so bold, StugMeister, I have written a bunch of background material for some Chaos cults, and it would be awesome if you could try to draw a few of them.

The Skin-carvers, Dorvastor. In the underground of Dorvastor, the cultists known as the Skin-carvers fight a constant war against the Imperium, trying to sabotage the worship of the Emperor on the cardinal world itself, as well as making offworld attacks. The Skin-carvers mark their members with hideous scars in the form of chaotic runes or twisted drawings, and the decorations vary in size and complexity from a simple rune on the abdomen for new members and dedicated infiltrators, to body-covering patterns for their dark priests.

The Massilian 110th, Castellan subsector. The Massilian 110th were originally doomed not a year after their founding, as they were sent on a hopeless mission in the middle of ork space. Because of a freak occurence, however, their ship was delayed in the warp, and while the other ships in the detachment were destroyed upon arrival, the Massilian 110th arrived long after the enemy had withdrawn. After this incident, Drakael appeared before the regiment as Azazel, angel of the Emperor, and has since then been worshipped as their guardian. The regiment wears lucky charms and secret symbols on pieces of paper, in devotion to their 'angel', in return for his protection and guidance.

The Cult of the Dragonlord, Archaios. The cult of the Dragonlord is a warrior cult that is preparing forwar on the side of the Alpha Legion in the Anargo sector. So far, the Cult of the Dragonlord have made no attacks against the Imperium, but their ranks are increasing and so are their resources.

Blood Brides, Meksum. Originally, the Blood Brides started out as an insignificant little coven of prostitutes in communal eselsees of Meksum, living in places which do not belong to any clan, used as a place for trade and collection of misfits and eselsee outcasts. The lack of owners in these communal eselsees lead to lack of repairs and medical protection. The Brides learned about the dark powers of Chaos and came to beg Slaanesh for protection against diseases and increased beauty and wealth. Drot'ninga answered their call, and they became a powerful cult, with female gangster members protecting the working prostitutes from rivals and law enforcers. It was the gangsters that gave the name Blood Brides to the criminal group, and it quickly became legend amongst the eselsees of Meksum.
If you need to know more about any of them, you can find more information here (http://anargo-sector.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=63)

If you prefer to draw something more generic, I'd sure like to see some Adeptus Arbites :D

malika
04-09-2005, 16:54
Erm, are we talking about the process of carving up a body and reconstructing it as a Servitor?
Well...that is an interesting idea too! I was thinking of making a Cyber Cherub using those baby dolls

But more requests: (since CELS came up with Anargo Sector related stuff)
-Quechitian Imperial Guard regiments: Quechit is a world in the Anargo Sector, eventhough most of the planet's surface is covered with water the remaining parts with land are covered with jungles, so imagine sort of a jungle fighting Imperial Guard but then with a more South American feel to them, long hair and beards. Perhaps inspire them with Latin American rebel groups or revolutionaries such as Che Guevara, MRTA, etc etc.
-Ork vehicles: however we've been discussing about making the Orks look less "childish", personally Im very pro WWI or WWII German feel to them, so perhaps something like that? Ork trucks and tanks inspired by German armoured cars and troop transporters?
-Imperial civilian vehicles: feel very free to come up with crazy ideas for this one

StugMeister
04-09-2005, 17:56
Oh lots of ideas to go through, once again I'll see what i can do!

Here's some Servitors that I did a while back during Portent days;

Gun Servitor 1 (http://www.deviantart.com/view/22544686/)

Gun Servitor 2 (http://www.deviantart.com/view/22544735/)

malika
04-09-2005, 17:59
What about an even crazier idea for a servitor: an ogryn servitor :chrome: this would be a servitor with either more heavy weapons (some sort of multiple misslelauncher similar to the dreadnought) or more close combat oriented?

CELS
04-09-2005, 18:24
Great stuff, Stugmeister. Love the first one with a battle cannon in his guts :D
You might want to decrease the size of their feet sometimes though... ;)

malika
04-09-2005, 19:08
I agree with CELS on the feet, it kind of makes your art look cartoonish from time to time, Juddski used to do the same. Its just a simple matter of proportions :)

StugMeister
05-09-2005, 22:10
Yes I must try to keep them feet smaller!

Been working on some Airborne Sentinels today (at work, always at work!) and they're coming along nicely. Its just a case of trying to find the primitives (cubes) from which they're made from and then getting the proportions correct. A little more work methinks, it didn't take too long to get the AFVs down to a tee but they are very simple in comparison to a walker.

malika
11-09-2005, 22:23
How are those sentinels doing now? ;)

Im curious about more of your work, Ive seen the regiments you have done for CELS and they are quite impressive. BTW did you get my PM?

StugMeister
12-09-2005, 08:17
@Malika: Still working on them Sentinels! Works kinda busy at the mo so when it gets quieter more work will be done.

I just saw your PM!!

malika
12-09-2005, 09:43
Good :D I just mentioned it because sometimes it doesnt show clearly when you receive a PM, I once received a PM and like two months later I saw that I actualyl received it

Well goodluck with combining work and making artwork, cant wait to see the results :)

Some interesting - and very nice - artwork there.

I prefer the less stylised (are these more recent?) ones like the dust nomad and blade monk.

StugMeister
18-09-2005, 12:31
Cheers Iredman, with the Blade Monk and Dust Nomad I suppose I'm sketching things which we havn't seen before. I think a lot of people just see an Imperial tank as just any other tank.

Hopefully I'll be uploading some new stuff very soon.

@Malika: Still not done anything solid as far as airborne Sentinels are concerned, but I'm developing the idea!

Are you kidding me? This is excellent stuff, Stugmeister. I'll be stealing all of it! Rest assured, StugMeister, you certainly have got talent. It's just that Warseer isn't really the best website to post artwork, if you're looking for artistic feedback.

But hey, I'll always be here, acting like I care and secretly manipulating you into drawing more beautiful artwork for my own personal goals. At least that's something ;)

StugMeister
22-09-2005, 08:53
@ CELS; Any particular ones you like?

I know all about the 'secret manipulation'; I'm still working ideas around my head about Malika's airborne Sentinels and you & Malika's background project (can't remember the name!).

@ ALL Warseerers - any requests? Its good to have some inspiration....

What about some Imperial Navy art, aircraft, crews, pilots and that sort of thing?

Tech Guard might also be really cool, lots of bionic craziness!

As for the Quechitians, I did start a sketch of one today but wasn't overly pleased with it. :(

CELS
23-09-2005, 20:34
Yes, indeed. I particularly like the Battle Sister one. Very nice and moody! I also like the falling warrior, except that his head looks a bit strange, like he got the back of his head blown off. Still good though :)

EDIT: Oooh, oooh! Here's an idea! How about drawing Titans? Up for the challenge? :D

StugMeister
24-09-2005, 17:03
@CELS: Titans.... I can do. Gargants are particularly easy.

CELS
24-09-2005, 17:16
Well, the way GW makes Gargants look, I could probably get my sister to draw those! The trick is making them look a bit realistic, like they could actually move. GW's ones just look silly, IMO

Any particular SM Terminator? I think I prefer to sketch things which havn't been done before by the GW bods, thats why a lot of my images are AFV variants, new ImpG regiments or Inquisitorial retinue characters.

The AdMech idea is very interesting though... I dunno quite how I'd go about it as they'd be hidden by the armour of the LemanRuss or whatever it is that they're crewing.

Stugs, you gotta do a Howling Griffon fer me!

(Referring back to my reply to Malika), I like to do things that havn't been done before, and SpaceMarines - they've been done!
Unless of course you've got some cool fluff for the HowlingGriffons that I can get my teeth into!

malika
26-09-2005, 20:39
Well for the vehicles with plugged in crews I was thinking of perhaps having an open hatch which means you can look inside, or like a inside picture?

What about a crew member sticking out of the turret, shooting a stormbolter?

CELS
26-09-2005, 20:52
Things that haven't been done before...

- Imperial drop ships
- Adeptus Astartes serfs
- Adeptus Mechanicus praetorians
- Sanctioned psykers (well, they've been done before, but they can't all look like the models)
- Non-militant Adeptas Sororitas
- Chaos orks (well, done once)
- Chaos Eldar
- Fallen Angels
- Rogue psykers
- The Sensei
- The Illuminati
- Imperial Leviathans
- Centurio Ordinati
- Knights
- Frateris Templar
- Vanus Assassins
- Venenum Assassins

malika
26-09-2005, 21:01
What about a more 4th edition version of the Imperial Jetbike?

More ideas:
-Eldar Titan Crew
-Knight Crew
-Knight Household troops
-crew of a space marine ship
-the inside of a space marine ship
-Imperial guard bikers
-Imperator Titan drop pod
-an updated version of the Imperator Titan
-Space marine lander (that thunderhawk like craft which carries like 6 tanks)
-chaos cultists
-farsight's tau renegades
-vespids
-kroot with traits of other races
-genestealer hybrids from other races.

StugMeister

29-09-2005, 22:51

I like their suggestions, I'm currently overloaded with ideas from these two great guys but its all good, I've got their list and I'm working my way through it. I've done an AdMech Leman Russ, an Imperial Dropship and Rogue Psyker so far, plus a few more...

Good work as usual, StugMeister ;) Out of curiosity; why do you prefer drawing Chimera-variants with cannons, instead of just drawing other types of Leman Russ tanks? I mean, Chimeras are originally APCs, after all.

ML Kurze
31-10-2005, 22:15
Well, some Chimeras serve as MBT's on agriworlds (in the 3rd edition Guard Codex, it said that sometimes only a platoon and a chimera is all that stands between the xeno and humanity), so it would be kinda logical for some Imperial COmmanders, or even PDF generals, to start converting the lighter chimera chassis into a SPG, SPAT or even a MBT. After all, the Chimera uses less material then a Leman Russ. And of course, the Chimera chassis is also used for the Trojan Tractor, the Basilisk, the Grifon, etc. So, why not for the types mentioned above?

I prefer Chimera variants because I can base more 'real life' vehicles on its hull. Whereas the LemanRuss is very tall, the Chimera has a more squat silhouette. I do sketch LemanRuss's, its just that Chimera variants are easier to do. (Mental Note; post a few Leman Russ's next time...)

I can have a go as and when I have the time. Gimme a description of the chap - I had a read of your story but all that I could make out is that he wears dark clothing?

ML Kurze
27-11-2005, 00:24
He wears clothes to match his surroundings (world, etc.), but usually a long dark coat with a thick pullover sweater which covers light flak armour, covered at the shoulders, chest section, upper arms, upper legs and stomach with thicker carapace armoured pieces, but thin enough to go unnoticed by the sweater and thick pants (something akin to cargo/combat pants). A thick, heavy duty belt is held together by an adamintine double eagle with inlaid inquisitorial I, which incorperates a refractor field. The eagle is covered by the pullover, which will only be revealed when the need arrises.
Undercover weaponry consists of snubnosed boltpistol (like a .45 automag), short powerblade (which is attached to the left hip) and a laspistol.

The Arbite bodyguard is a slim, long man with the same outfit as the Inquisitor (except for the refractor field in the eagle). Instead of a short boltpistol, it's a stubgun and carries a boltpistol as main sidearm. Also he doesn't have a powerblade, but a chainblade.
The Acolyte (the woman) has two slender blades on her hips and a Jokearo digital needler as a hairpin. She's dressed in dark-grey/brown leather flak armour which reveales white skin (think of the woman in the Rogue Trader artwork for the Eye of Terror worlds).
Another associate will appear in due time.

I like the inquisitor with the bionic eye, although her rank would probbaly warrent something with a little more punch than a stub gun ;).

I don't really know if this is critism or just an observation, but your brigand and nash look strikingly similar. In fact, most of your male characters have a very similar look to them (which is probably a function of the drawing style) and some of your drawings fade into monotony. I think experimenting with different body shapes and faces may broaden your horizons in terms of character creation. and maybe some more snug fitting clothes :p.

Regardless of variety, your work is interesting and as always, is a pleasure to see.

I suppose I do have a certain format that I stick too, I really must try to broaden my horizons a bit more. I must try some chubbier looking individuals. And as for skin-tight clothing, I will have to see what assassins I can come up with (or any other characters that you can think of). Any fluff available on the two other shrines? I don't suppose DeathCult Assassin have to be exactly as the minis?

Regardless of variety, your work is interesting and as always, is a pleasure to see.

There are a million different Death cults, so you have a lot of freedom, and they're just as likely to wear robes or armour as skin-tight clothing.

If by shrines you mean temples, the only known fluff about the other two is that one specialises in sabotage (presumably explosives and such) whilst the other specialises in poison. Anything beyond that is pure speculation.

For variation, you might also consider the non-heroic type of characters. You know, see the Warhammer 40,000 universe from another perspective. Scribes, tech priests, astropaths, navigators, rogue traders, judges, preachers, confessors, etc. :)

The BFG and Imperial Cultist pics are both old ones, but the two Ork pics are brand new.

ooo Content!

Nice stuff as always. I like the cultists, but are those geysers or explosions mid-battle? I figure cultists go pretty crazy in battle, they have to be a certain amount crazy to begin with! The ork stuff is cool as well.

Cheers Izram.

Those are explosions in the background of the Cultists.

A request:
Sicittan troopers. These would look similar like Afghan soldiers, only added with 40k goodness!

For an idea...instead of tulbands which the Taliban and Afghan soldiers seem to wear, give them perhaps a Cadian style helmet, perhaps hidden underneath that tulband. Perhaps somewhat silimar to the Tallarn Guard but with a more rugged and wild look.

I'll see what I can do for you Malika!;)

Sounds like a cool idea to me.

All right Stuggs. This, I mean these all are great. I wish I could see some more of these colored!
Though, mostly seeing B&W reminds me of old MG.

By the way, your style reminds me loads of my stuff when I was younger. Someone recomended some life drawing coarses and I went and my anatomy went up like 99%. It is surprising how drawing those "life models" can improve your work. BTW, you can use your friends too, and they don't have to be naked! Subways are one of the best free spots available, those and food courts in shopping malls.

Keep up the awsome work!

Yeah, I'd really like to colour up more of my pics but its just a case of not having the time. I'd really love to do some full colour artwork.

Yeah, I've done a tonne of life drawing when I went through my art A-level and then my BTEC course. I do try to keep some of the lessons I learnt in mind when do my doodles.

Keep up the awsome work!

Don't ya worry, I shall try me best.:D

Don't worry Malika, as I said on ASP; I've been working on the Sicittans. They're coming on quite nicely I think, although I may want to do a few more dudes with different weapons.

A quick preview for Malika. This is one of four pics that I've done for the Sicittan's, I know the cloak seems very big but it seems to work in other poses better.

Anyway, hows about an Ork Battlewagon?

Tis an Ork Battlewagon. I based the design on a WWII German SdKfz 251 Halftrack.
