Well, there are already about 1,000* topics on that subject in this forum, probably a good idea to look at them before starting a new thread...

How about this one:

Which was about 1/3 of the way down the page.

*Slight exaggeration.

To be honest whats the problem with talking about this again, its not like section of the forum is exactly busy.

I started out with 4 Tau Barracuda and 2 Tigarshark and that worked pretty well for me, enables you to play some scenarios and gives you a good basic force, without having to spend a wad on models.

Of course you need an opponent. My experience is currently only against imperial, and in a straight out dogfight he will play 5/6 Thunderbolts.

"How many Aircraft do I need to play?"

Short answer: 5 - 3 Thunderbolts and 2 Nightwings, this gets you enough to play the most basic scenario with another player.

Long answer: It depends on what race you want to play and how diverse a force you want. Getting 100 point of Aircraft is probably a good place to start. The thing is that 120 points can be as few as 4 Aircraft (Nightwings) or as many as 10 (Hell Blades).

So my suggestion to anyone starting out that wants to get a handle on the rules is to get the rulebook and 2 packs of your preferred race's fighters, in most cases this should give you a good starting point and wont take a huge chuck of your budget.

I don't mean to be rude at all but I am going to cry if another person posts a new thread about this again :P

Maybe we should get a sticky done? If someone writes and 'Introduction to AI' thread I am sure a mod would stickify... then we wont have a new "OMG WHAT DO I NEED!!?@!!1!?" thread every few days...

Sounds like a plan. Who wants to write it? Is there nothing on Aerowiki about a good starting force?

Well I for one find these threads very useful.
You experienced AI players may know it all and can refer with impunity to a previous thread, but as lomo pointed out, there's naff all happening in here so anything that creates Input gets my vote!
I've played AI twice now, both beginners Dog Fight and loved every minute of it.
I can't believe I waited this long to start the game! (Mainly expense considerations to be honest! Which is why I went the non-Forge World route for planes!)
I now have a "small" Ork Air Waaaagh of about 400 points (and rising)!
You can see a pic of them in one of the threads below this if you are interested?

I've also checked Aerowiki and whilst it's a good start, it's not got as much in it as I hoped, and thus I'm back here.

All and any input to this game is good for me.

And as a starting force I'd suggest about 4 to 6 Fighters of whichever race you decide to play. And do look at alternative sources of planes if you're on a tight budget! I've had hours of fun creating Ork planes and now have over 20 with none of them exactly the same! Very Orky! ;)

You could also use some the models I have used to create an Imperial or maybe even Chaos Force with very little difficulty, just pick your models carefully on looks! :D And go for more uniformity of manufacture rather than the hodge-podge that I have built!

After building your basic Fighter Force you need to think what else you will need to play the scenarios. For many races there aren't that many options, Orks, Chaos for example, only then have Bombers to choose from, so a few of these will be needed. Other races have more options and will therefore need careful thought about where you want your Force to go, all Shooty, some Bomby, mixture of all types etc etc.

That's where help from Vets would be very useful in here. Any takers?

And I apologise now if I cause Fattdex to break down in tears by perpetuating this terrible attrocity of asking for help from others! ;)

Harkon Greywolf - who needs a really Orky name to go with his Air Waaagh! ;)

Apart from the fact no one reads stickies if you put one together I'll sort it.

As I keep telling you 400pts is not small. :p

We dont mind people asking help, thats fine. Its just asking the same damn question when the question is answered many times previously! Asking a followup question in those threads is fine, but a new is a waste (although it does make the forum a bit more active, you are right).

As for the 'help', im not sure what you are asking? Force breakdown? Its not really like 40k where you have an army that has many roles... Its more about buying a bit of everything, and catering your flight to fit the mission. Airfield Strike: Bombers with Fighter escort. Troop Insertion: Transports with Fighter escort.

Like you say, there isnt that much flexibility when it comes down to it.

We can always hope. What do people think we need in a sticky?

400pts is not small.

Absolutely correct!

Ive just got the book today and was looking for an idea where to start. I think Ive made up my mind after spending some time reading through all the posts on here, Tyra_nid - your comment about a mixture has helped me decide, thanks!
