It's been a couple months since I updated my blog, and some things have changed with the army. I decided to go with all Bret models instead of using warrior priests from the empire line for my Lords. I've also changed my list a little.

Here are some updated images:

Lord (sorry about the photo)

Those battle pilgrims are really great. I love Sisters of Sigmar models. Your red looks great are you using the foundation paints?

A neutral shade of black.

Hmm, these are nice. Very Blanchian colour scheme you have going there. Me likes.

No. Funnily enough I have a box of foundation paints but since my color scheme is already set and I'm quite a way into the army, they have to wait for the next army to get cracked open.

It's Red Gore with Blood Red highlights. My "inquisition" colors.

I'm glad you like them, they're my favorite looking unit too. The Grail Pilgrims in drag are pretty funny if you look closely.

Made some more progress on the horses tonight. All the metal, black and highlights are done. Just the heraldry and grass to go. Should have pics tomorrow night. Then on to their riders.

Thanks for the input, I'm glad you like them.

For faces, I follow the same general procedure I do for everything in the white family of colors and metallics. Base color, wash, base color highlights and cleanup.

I put down the base coat, in this case elf flesh, then give it a wash of thinned down paint, in this case scorched brown. After this is dry, I highlight all the raised areas with elf flesh again, and soften any areas where the shadows are too drastic.

Eyes I do before the highlight stage, after the wash. I use skull white with a chaos black pupil, then outline/cleanup with scorched brown as necessary.

For these guys I wanted pretty drastic shadows and circles under the eyes so they all had a slightly haunted look appropriate to the Inquisition.

The red is red gore over chaos black with blood red highlights. The trick is actually to let the black darken the red gore.

I will bow to your wishes and paint more Battle Pilgrims next.

Well, before getting to work on the Battle Pilgrims I decided to paint another Knight, this time a Grail Knight Standard Bearer. This way I will have the first rank in every unit painted.

Here he is...

This army is going to look great when you pull it all together sticking to such a 'tight' scheme using such a limited palette.

Are you considering any unit(s) to break this scheme and act as an accent colour within the army?

colhodg
29-06-2007, 13:43
This is some really nice work - pig difference from th usual bretonian muticolour thing which can look garish even when done well. This'll look amazing when finished - you may have tipped me into wanting brettonians next...

Impressive stuff odmiller, youve managed to give your army an extremely coherant theme yet given a sense of individuality to each knight.. something that's very difficult to achieve... already looking good but I reckon this army'll be extremely striking as a whole.. look forward to seeing it :)

odmiller
29-06-2007, 23:59
Harry, I've thought about it but haven't decided on one yet. It's a tough call, and really the battle pilgrims would have been the best bet. For what it's worth, the men at arms will make pretty big difference with all those big White Shields.

Colhodg, good to hear! I liked the Bret models a lot, but also tend to really go for a unified looking force on the field, so this seemed like a good way tohandle it.

Armos, thanks for the feedback. Your Chaos log is my favorite at the moment, so it's a nice surprise to get feedback from the painter I've been watching. My next army is a fully mounted Undivided force, so I've been paying especially close attention, but I am forcing myself to stay focused on getting these guys done before getting underway.

I've had a slight change in plans in tham my LGS is running fantasy games in its Friday tournies for now. This changes things in that I have a short term goal of getting my 1300 point list painted instead of just struggling towards the full 2000, and will change up the order of things. The Sister Pilgrims will wait while more knights and Men at Arms get done. Only 10 men at arms and 5 knights to go and I can play fully painted in the small tournies. After that, I promise the battle pilgrim sisters will get more love.

Thanks Inquisitor Kong. It's hard to see from the pics, but the guys holding the Relique itself are all in drag so they fit in. Kind of a Monty Python unit, 4 guys in drag carrying around a dead knight.

I think the scheme would work well with Empire. I was really tempted when the new stuff came out, in fact I bought some Empire units, but in the end I am just too far along in the Bretonnians to start another army in the same scheme.

Thought I'd add a quick update pic. I managed to paint up the last 4 movement trays this week while working on some other projects, and thought I'd take a shot of the 1300 pt army. That's the point total we use for our Friday night tournies when I get to play most often, so it's a good target.

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/1300ptarmyshot2.gif

Still to paint I have 5 knights (4 Grail and 1 KotR), and 10 men at arms to reach this 1300pt goal. For this list my Grail Knights count as Errant knights.

I realized why I like your amry so much. The Bretonnians I see are all bight colors which makes them muddled and hard to focous on. Yours on the other hand use one of my favorite colour skeems for uniforms. Red and Black.

All my command sections in my IG army use the same colours for a similar effect. I dont know if I said this before but these are the best Bretonnians I have ever seen.

Keep it up. And why 1300pts?

Glad you like the scheme, that's lofty praise indeed. It does work well for IG too, I agree there.

I only get a hall pass to game every couple of weeks on Friday night. My local store has 1300pt Fantasy tournies then (1250 40k ones), so it makes sense for meto build to that point. Eventually I'll go to 2000, but I needed acloser target to keep me going.

thanks for the kind words guys. I really like most of the mordheim lines, they make really characterful minis, but still with enough variation that you can have two ranks without repeating. I really like some of the chaos cultists and have always wanted to use them somewherčat some point.

anyway, I think i'll try to get the next rank of men at arms done next.

Reds and browns are done. Base coat of the metals too. That's actually most of the heavy lifting.

I should finish the metals tomorrow and try to tackle all the flesh. After that just the blacks, personal items, and bases. Depending on how much time I get I might finish them tomorrow and the shields the day after. If not, then I'll finish them Tuesday and the shields Wednesday.

Well, I'll bring this back to life. I've decided to paint my Bretonnians up to GT points(2250) over the next few months. This meant I had to add some models, and paint others that have been sitting around in nothing but their undercoats!

I got everything new built and primed, now it's painting time, and that's where this blog comes back in. Motivation.

On the table now:
5 converted mounted yeomen (currently being painted)
2 more pegasus knights, a standard and a musician
10 battle pilgrims (using sisters)
3 Knights of the Realm
6 Grail Knights
2 more sets of defensive stakes (if I feel like it)

Nice army, Odmiller! The red looks good, and it pulls the army together really well. When painting my own Bretonnians I was torn between individualising the knights, and painting them as 'units'. In the end, I much preferred the 'unified' look - so I'm deeply envious of your army! The sisters of sigmar models for battle pilgrims look excellent - do you play Mordheim too?

Thanks guys. The yeoman have the legs of the kislevite horsemen (forget what they're called), and upper bodies from the brettonian men at arms and archer sets.

The conversions were relatively minor. I removed the bows from their leg holsters and turned those into quivers, and then just cut up the plastic archers and men at arms as necessary.

Glad you like them. They look better with the matte varnish, as they aren't so shiny now.

I'll try to put an army picture together this weekend. The last ones were at 1300 points, the army now has to be 2250, so it's a bit bigger.

I also paint/play Bretonnians, and have a Gore Red/Black/Sunburst Yellow theme.

Well, it's been slow going. The wife decided I wasn't painting for the last few days, so guess what, I wasn't painting! That being said, I've still squeaked out some progress. The last three knights of the Realm are complete, but for their shields. I will try to finished these tonight, and get pics up in all their glory, but at the very least I'll post shieldless pics.

Then, it's on to the next units. I'm having a little trouble deciding what to do next. Part of me wants to work in a conversion of the Lahmian vampire models I am thinking of into either damsels (although I've already got two) or into the Battle Pilgrim(Sister) unit. I will play around with some of the ideas.

Very nice, and I like the Lance movement tray - it's built out of the GW textured movement trays, isn't it? I did the same for my Brets. A bit of a pain, but at the end of the day it's just some cutting, some gluing, a bit of green stuff to fill gaps and plasticard sheet to hold it all together, and you can move your knights across the battlefield as smoothly and quickly as they deserve! And speaking of knights, those red knights look great. The metallics are painted very, very nicely. Looking forward to whatever unit you do next (Pilgrim Sisters! Pilgrim Sisters!).

You are exactly right. The textured movement trays are great. Very easy to work with, and IMHO good looking what done.

I'm at a little bit of a crossroads as to what to tackle next. I've still got quite a few knights to do, so I think I ought to get at least another couple complete before giving myself a break with the sisters. For this reason, I've selected the last two pegasus knights to start.

However, I had a bit of the modelling bug, so I converted the Lahmian vampire model into a damsel. A bit of a risque one, but there you go. That's where indecision set in, as I realized I'll never use more than 2 damsels in a force, and I like the ones I've got, so I decided I could either make her into a turn counter, or just add her to the battle sisters/pilgrims. Anyway, I'm going to grant myself this one model break from armor, deciding how I'll use her as I go.

Here's the plan for March as it stands now:
1. Damsel/Turn Counter/Pilgrim Leader
2. 2 pegasus knights
3. 5 battle pilgrims/sisters
4. 3 grail knights
5. 5 battle pilgrims/sisters
6. 3 grail knights
7. Display base

Done!

OK, so here's a WIP shot of my newest Bretonnian. She's a little less chaste than my other ladies. I'll post completed pics once I decide what to do with her.

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/damsel3.gif

Now, here's the question. Use her as a damsel, or as part of a turn counter, or as one of the battle sisters? I like the model and the paint job, so she needs to hit the table with the rest, I just don't know how.

mrtn
29-02-2008, 15:50

Very much so. She also could do for a Morgan Le Fey type character. Good now, but down the road she'll be trouble.

For now I think I'll throw her in with the Sister Pilgrims. She's a new convert, deciding to leave her previous employment as the army marched through town, and serve her country instead.

Nice job on the Lahmian Damsel, Odmiller! Very nice paint job, and a very inventive idea as well. I say use her in the army! Why not? My Bretonnian Damsel is the Witch model from the Mordheim range, and I use it because I like the sculpt and I'm happy with the paint job. Also, I've built up some background explaining what she's doing there, so it adds character to the army anyway. That said, I can understand your reluctance to use her, particularly when you already have two damsels painted.
Oh, and I like the painting schedule, because I really want to see more of the Sisters of Sigmar battle pilgrims!

Excellent, Odmiller. I'm delighted that you decided to jump the gun on the sisters, so to speak. Like the Lahmain conversion, they are looking good. That's nice of you to say, but I think you need to look around more. There are some truly talented guys and gals on this board.

I know what you mean about getting tired, I do too. And as I am nearing the end, it's getting harder and harder. I have a basic philosophy of at least getting something done every day, even if it's minor, and setting small, attainable goals in the more boring minis with little presents of more exciting minis in between.

I think I like the box of questing knights GW sells. They are really characterful figures. I would probably use them.

I do have an idea to paint up the king on hippogriff mini, as it will be a good addition for big games, and it's a pretty nice model.

This evening I finished basing the last 3 horses. I also fixed up some shileds and new legs for the old Grail Knight minis I am using for two of the guys. Only minor conversions in this army, my 40k armies are usually more heavily converted.

If you look at the battle sisters, you will notice that the men carrying the Relique all have wigs/head wraps and stuffed shirts, and makeup so they can fit in with the sisters. The Religue itself is very Monty Python, so why not men in drag?

There are a few head and weapon swaps throughout, and some cutting to shape of movement trays, but that's it.

Here's the latest update. I made some real progress. Horsies are done except the Heraldry and the grass. I would have painted the heraldry, but I need new white paint, mines all gloopy. I will try to get that done tomorrow, then it's on to the knights.

Nice! Now where are those knights? But, well, if you're as lucky as me, you'd better field the horsies alone. They usually tend to do more damage than their riders... ;)

Not only do they do more damage, but they ratchet up your opponents frustration immensly. Nothing like your lord taking the last wound from a horse after surviving the rest of the attacks!

Great mate! Get on with the knights, thats what Ive been waiting for! Lovely horses though, I think this is what stopping me from playing my own bret force. I hat painting horses:p

I agree. I think those were the 6 psychologically toughest horses I've ever painted.

1) Nearing the end of the project
2) Dislike painting horses
3) Normally paint one rank (3) or less at a time

I'd say one of the reasons I use such a mixed force, is the thought of painting more mounted figures give me nightmares.

Tough weekend to make progress, but I got a little done.

I decided to paint the knights by rank. So after touching up the primer for all six, I base coated the metal on 3 of the knights. Then I gave them the black wash.

Tomorrow I'll clean up and add highlights and take pictures.

Here's the update for a rank of Grail Knights. Silver and flesh done. Next will be the reds, then the gold, then the black highlights.

These are fantastic!

And red gore over black, with blood highlights?

Are you saying you acheived this look on your red with 2 coats of paint and no mixing?

You are a god man!

Yes. Either a god, or lazy! Actually, I'm of the philosophy that you need to strike a compromise between quality and quantity in order to get an army done. It's all about setting a level of quality you are happy with that will still let you complete the army. Otherwise you end up with a small number of superbly painted minis, but no force you can field on the tabletop.

So, my reds are black, gore, then blood. The highlights end up quite stark, but at an arms length, they look great.

I finished the silver metals, and based the red areas for two of the three. If all goes well, I'll have the red areas completely done for pics tomorrow night.

And it's done! Well done, Odmiller! To get an army (particularly fiddly Bretonnians) completely finished to such a high standard is quite an achievement. They look great. And I love the red - and did from the start, if I remember correctly!

Looking forward to full army pics.

So, what's next...?

odmiller
02-05-2008, 17:40
Well, I obviously failed to get pictures up last night. I had soccer coaching until 8:30, then a late business dinner, and then a crying baby who decided only I would be allowed to get him to sleep. Suffice it to say, after I got him back to sleep after midnight, I was too tired. Picutres tonight, I promise.

As to what's next... I don't know. I have a few small 40k projects to work on. But I'm not settled on my next big project. I have a new IG army I've been collecting parts for over the last year, but with the new ruleset and rumors of a new IG codex early next year, I'm not sure that it's time to begin yet.

I do have a secret fantasy project I've been rattling around in my head, and slowly pushing its way to the front. It will be really cool and twisted, but I'm not sure if it makes sense to start it knowing I just finished a long Fantasy one, and the new edition of 40k will capture my attention.

In the end, I might just clean up the 40k projects on my desk, and not commit to any new army project until one just demands to be done.
