I`ve been wanting to start a log for ages but was without a camera, however through an incredably complicated and convoluted plan I have managed to convince the missus that we need one, all it took was to give her a baby mwha ha ha
Any hoo I am broke most of the time and tend to collect for display rather than play so I tend not to make squads but rather little groups of individuals or characters. all are converted and Ive recently started sculpting ( which I actually prefer to painting so with out further adoo.

first up SGT. Stone I saw this fellow in the INQ rule book and loved him,how can you not love a guy who wants to fight nids in hth.Ive tried to make him look like the pic in the rulebook, hes basically some cadian heavy weapons legs with a scratchbuilt torso and arms and a monified catachan head

Very awesome monkey. The gs work is superb and I'm really impressed with Sgt. Stone's paint job...he looks pretty mental.

" wont it kill them"
" well not all of them"

If I remember Its just a catachan lasgun ( they have the longer barrel shorter stock) and cut of the barrel flush with the stock, you get the muzzel and glue that where the barrel comes out. The box mag is just a bit of sprue sliced to the right thickness, then shave the bottom edges so its
/ \
\ /
like that. Then just build up the stock along the bottom with green stuff and make the front underslug light/gizmo with layers of pva. the tracker geegog on the side is just a wedge of gs.
did that make any sense, as Ive just confused myself

This is my tribute to one of my favourite white dwarf covers
Generic cadian charging and shouting! just some cadian legs and a scratch built body and arms and custom lasgun, with a cadian sgt head on top. for those of you with beady little eyse and good memories. Yes! his com set is on the wrong ear which actually made more trouble than you would expect because his cable is supposed go from his ear to the com set, to his pack and having it on the wrong side through it all out of kielter. but we got there in the end.
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0048.jpg
And finally ( for tonight) black hawk down stylee shouting sgt type fellow, he`s got some friends Ill be posting up at some point

Thanks for the kind works everyone.

I will try and get these pictures a bit clearer, but I`m still on a bit of a learning curve as I only got it yesterday and technology really seems to have some kind of vendetta against me.

first we have a long las armed guards men, who will eventually get painted in kind of beige and tan fatigues, pretty much a scrtch apart from the head and rifle
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0077.jpg

next we have the rather unamused looking brother faust, Astartes of the Imperial fists, currently seconded to deathwatch.

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0064-1.jpg

next a team shot of my delta stylee boys, those crazy coca cola swilling maverick renegades fighting for truth justice and the Imperial way. I did the painting on these just as I was getting back into the hobby so its a bit rough and ready.
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0088.jpg

and some of their team mates who are still waiting for my some what damaged brain to remember they exist and finish them.

next fausts partner in xenos extermination big angry space wolf.

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0083.jpg

next A support weapon for my boys, I don`t like the idea of guard having bolters so made up a tripod mounted multilaser, which still needs a load of tidying up

Multilaser counts as Heavy Bolter? Tis an idea we Edinburgers had too. Although TBH most players around here just get to use them as Multilasers.

Either way, nice work. Your GSing is really cool. Just wish the photos were a little clearer so I could give better feedback. ;)

Love your work, truly amazing sculpting. Now with your pics, just check the book that probably came with your camera and make sure you are using the Macro function. You'll need this for close ups. Some of the pics came out not too bad so you may already have it on but just make sure. Also a thing that I found out with my camera is that if you are not using a flash then you really need to use a tripod or something to hold the camera completely still. Also I have to give my camera a sort of half press on the shoot button before I take a pic so that the auto focus does it's thing. If I don't they come out quite blurry like yours.
Hope this helps you a bit, it's just some things I would have loved to have been told when I first started taking pics of these things too.
Keep up the good work, looking forward to more.. :D

Quick up date on cpl clemmy, Iv`e finally got my **** in to gear and started painting him. Iv`e also added some goggly things as the original head sculpt I made had a bit of an overhang on the eyes, and it made the face look a bit daft.
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0094.jpg

next we have one of karvans boys still being painted at the moment.
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0041.jpg

and a couple of still in the sculping phase

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0087.jpg
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0086-1.jpg
monkey edit: skidrow yeah Ive got it in the macro setting, I think your right that I may need a tripod, it does the autofucus fine one time then terribly the next, Ive just got to convince the missus that I wont be able to take baby photos without a tripod lol.

Right I think Im finally getting the hang of my camera, so Ive got a couple of retakes of some previous shots and a couple of new faces,
First new face Klaus the hardbitten morheim chap, basically a stock milita with gsed breastplate, thigh plates, chain mail surcoat and a helmet. Ive gone for quite a grimy blood stained look on him as I can`t get away with these guys fighting with swords without blood all over them.

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0107.jpg

next we have a reshoot of Stone, just because he`s my favouiteand I wasn`t happy with the previous shots

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0108.jpg

next we have Rhames, the Idea for this is basically Idea for a planet thats main hive complexes have become infested with zombies, the planets survivors have built little for towns to survive and this guy will eventually be part of an arbite/enforcer/zombie culling team.

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0106.jpg

and lastly a retake of my cadian hopefully this one is much clearer and you can actually se his flak armour

I havent been getting much painting/sculpting in this weekend due to work so its only a small up date on cpl clemmy and a new fellow by the name of pvt. pebble

first up clemmy
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0119.jpg

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0117.jpg

I decided I didn`t like the head I had so I ended up using a hasslefree one instaed with the top taken off to added the metal plating and then added a metal eypatch, also there was some roughness where the old head was removed so I added some dog tags to clean it up a bit.

Pvt pebble is very much WIP and only the basics are there so far, he will eventual be armed with a short sword and buckler. With the short sword arm up ready to thrust and the shield arm low.

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/DSCF0118.jpg

and because Ive only used three pics I`ll add another delta boy, I`m thinking of making this one a bit snipery

I tend to use foundry paints for my base coat them, for this guy I used charcoal black for the body ( dark grey) and white for the head. Although I generally work from a black undercoat but I running low on black paint.

Quick up date on my sneaky chap, I would have gone for a darker brown as Catferret suggested but all I have other than graveyard is bestial brown and it looked a bit odd, and as most of the shadowing is black and dark grey I decided against black, All theres left to do now is his head and weapons.

Out of interest what weaving ( is it classed as weaving?) method do you use, I started with the 4 into one method, but found it that time consuming doing it in strips, especially when they twist, so in the end I just made a skeleton of the coif and just build onto it.

I cheat and use the method often mistakenly called ringmail. It uses 2 sizes of ring, 6mm and 12mm. The 12mm rings are linked together using the 6mm. It's pretty fast in comparison and still looks pretty good. It also weighs a fair bit less than conventional chain. Haven't tried making a coif, it looks too fiddly for me.

Ive just being pottering about recently, but Ive got a good few colonial marine-esqe troopers coming from em4. Ive just about finished my first one, Ive gone for a fairly simple colour scheme just to speed up painting.

Nice grab on the 'ancient' (or just really old) wolf head SM. Haven't seen one of those in years!!

Their nice the EM4 minis Ive got an order in for a load more of them, their like 1.25 each and their great fun to paint.

I`d completely forgotten I had the wolf guy down in the depths of my bitz box, Ive got a load of old lead death company fellows as well that need some attention aswell not to mention some space crusade stuff thats looking a bit tempting too.

So what do you have in mind for the space wolf fellow?

I think I`m just going for a normal space wolves paint job, but I always find marines hard to paint as i`m used to painting cammo and cloth with guard chaps. Other than that I might give him a fancy back pack (wolf fur ect) and maybe wolf up his sword a bit.

Satan Dingo 420 thanks :) they will be painted eventually, but now Ive gor a load of colonial looking marines competing for my attentions.

In the mean time I found this eversor at the bottom of my bits box scowling at bottom of my bits box ( as much as some without a head can scowl) this was actually a pre-order form when the assassin minis first came out, and at some point in its life I had the great idea of cutting off his head and neuro gauntlet so Ive had to bodge together a new one.

I would be posting up my colonial marine fellows but alas I decided at the last minute that I didn`t like their guns or their colour so they're now sans weapons sitting in some brake fluid waiting to get redone with some proper guns ( hasslefree pulse rifles ftw).
I the mean time Ive just got a apc from the wargames workshop but upon comparing its front to the aliens apc I realized their sod all like it, so I professed a load of gym member ship cards from work and changed the front.

I had a wee potter about last night and have ( possibly) started on Nayl`s head He still needs a little neatening up as I made him in the lags when I was playing Anarchy online last night. Ive also got a provisional pose in ind but Ive left my doodle in the car. Its basically pistol held at arms reach at about belly button level, body hunched forward whilst walking forward.

Ive been pottering around the last few days and gotten a little bit done harlon is pretty much done and now ready for painting, but I want to get my colonial marine looking scallywags fitted together first. I had them already to go but decided I didn`t like the guns. So Ive fitted them with pulse rifles from Hasslefree ( how I love thee) Ive got the first 5 done but for the rest Ive had to order some more. Unfortunately the minis from EM4 are slightly smaller than the copplestones ones so form now on I`ll be sticking withe the copplestone ones, which I think are more detailed anyway.

Any way heres the colonials marines so far

Heres the Colonials so far the black in the recesses will either gotten rid of or soften, as its just there due to me changing my mind on the carapace colour, I was originally going to go for black naval security stylee, but I just looked wrong so now its either going to be olive drab or I may use the cammo out of the Film, which IRC is kind of US woodland.

What sort of training, if it's not too obtrusive :)

monkey child
11-09-2007, 12:56
Not obtrusive at all mate, basically strength training now with a fair bit of bag work, I used to go more for the bodybuilding type training but my digestion struggled with the meals (5-6 a day) , my greed struggled with the menu (grilled chicken, tuna, rice, steamed veg), and I despise cardio training  now I just like flinging the weight about without worrying too much if my abs are visable.
Anyhoo heres my sniper fellow so far, Im waiting for his torso to dry before I sculpt on the top flaps/fasteners on his pooches.

12-09-2007, 00:18
Hey's looking fantastic, kinda reminds me of the assasin from the Hellboy movie. So are you sculpting the arms or using cadian/catachan arms?

13-09-2007, 11:22
I ended up sculpting up some arms as I wanted his rifle to have a rifle stock rather than a pistol grip, so it would have taken as much work to get a catachan/cadian ect set of arms to fit as it would to bang out dome new ones. Hes essentially done now but I am planning on sticking some king of magazine just forward of his trigger I tried a las one but it made it look more like a assault rifle than a sniper rifle so I took it off.
any hoo here he is
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/sniperfrontcomplete.jpg
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa163/monkeychild_01/sniperprofile.jpg
what ive decided to is depending on the hunters status in the gang they will either get a more sleek compact respirator if they the leader or specialist and some thing more bulky if their a mere pleb. The design for the no frills ressi i had an idea for last night, will get doodled down while Im at work to night. This kind of flies in the face of my original for a completely different gas mask for each person, but I realized if I did this i would end up having to do designs I didn`t like just so the were different.

Thanks for all the kind words gents, Ive started sketching out how I'm going to do the grenade launcher fellow, The only problem is I`m working all weekend so I wont be able to get much done sculpting wise. So far though I'm planning on modelling the Grenade launcher like an M79 with the barrel "broken" for loading with one hand holding it and the other dropping in a round. torso is going to have a similar resi to the sniper but with american grenadier style pouches everywhere. The only thing Im struggling with at the moment is what stance to put him in ie. running, standing crouching ect. so if any of you chaps have any ideas fire away.

Catferret
14-09-2007, 21:02

Quick update on my grenade specialist, hes only on his first layer or detailing so he fairly rough at the moment but it shows more or less what Im going for, the head isn`t going to be the final one but it shows the position the final one will be in. The pose was fairly awkward to do and I ended up having to measure all the limbs and joints of a cadian, then glue and GS them together into the desired shape.

I also spent a fair bit of time working on the grenade launcher, originally I was going to use the front of a cadian one and change the stock but because of the heroic scale ( of the gun) it would mean he would look really awkward in a reloading position, so I drilled out a bit of plastic and built the stock up using lots of "Nam" pictures for reference. Once the first layer of green is set Im going to add the shotgun style breach catch on the handle with the thumb pushing it across
God I do go on.. Heres the piccies

Monkeychild, the shear volume of work amazes me, never mind the quality & character.

Have you tried using ProCreate putty? You can get a sharper edge with it than GS IMHO, and it's pretty much the same price. I think GS is better for the organic stuff though.

Just took a look back through the whole log, some awesome stuff there, can't wait to see more painted! Rhames is awesome, I take it hes named after Ving? I love Stone and Nayl, looking forward to seeing more from the Eisenhorn/Ravenor books, just ordered the latest Ravenor at my library, I'm on reading Hereticus to get into the converting mood and I'm looking forward to Kara Swole too!

How about Bex Begundi? I seem to get a different mental picture of him every time I read Hereticus, I would love to see him in model form.

The Bounty Hunter sniper is brilliant, so close to your sketch, pose is brilliant and the rifle looks awesome!

The delta boys and colonials are brilliant too, watched BHD last night and Aliens is currently on...they're good guard making watching material!

cheers mate, I will eventually Get a begundi knocked together but I just know its going to be one of the most awkward poses ever. I mean whenever he`s described he either diving or rolling about about its going to be tricky representing that on a slottabase.

I don`t know why but I just had a sudden flurry of activity when I got home from work at 9, Ive finished up the hand on my grenade lad and just started whipping up a strangely starwarsy looking bounty hunter. he will eventually have a modified bolter and will be one of 3, as he is lower down in the heirachy of the team he gets a larger respirator than the other chaps.

They will get painted, eventually, probably, maybe:evilgrin: No, I`m just going to get them all sculpted up before I tackle the painting Ive only got 2 more bolter guys and the guilder (who Ive already got a sketch done of).

Im considering painting them one of two ways either fairly muted clothing with lots of different colour/material armour with lots of paint chipped off. or have the armour blacked up and maybe khaki coveralls underneath. To be honest I pretty stumped over the matter

Ross
19-09-2007, 15:07
Personaly, muted and faded colours work (for me anyway) with chipping.
You can sort of make each one a bit more of an individual then.

But the blackened armour and khaki brings them togehther as a team, a bit more regulated.

Not much help, but I'm good at pointing out the obvious :)

monkey child
19-09-2007, 21:26
The bolter drum is made from a couple of old ork warbike bub caps with the protrusion removed, I think they were ork ones anyway.

Ive finished first bolter guy and Ive moved onto second bolter guy, this chap has some kind of gas bottle on his chest, probably not the safest method of storing pressurized gas, but will he listen, will he heck.

MF3000 In total I going for the leader ( done), the specialists X 2 ( done) 3 bolter armed hunters ( 1 and 1/2 done) then Ive got my guild rep to do. Then for my merc driver I`m planning on making an out of shape hiver, Who previously was on of the ADmechs vacume cleaner salesmen but now fancies himself as a bounty hunter, no weapons ( as he prefers skin on skin) just lots of beads and feathers in his hair and a general air of ineptitude. Im going with the provisional name of "mutt" on this one.

Catferret,Captain_Wolverine,firestorm40k thank you kindly gents, I may actually start sending out some pics of some of my sculpts to some minis companies , worst they can say is no.

Ross, If ever Im looking to adopt a slightly odd colonial with an unusually high libido, you will certainly be my first port of call:D

DigitsDavid that leg does indeed look odd from that angle, I think its because of the arm resting on it, it makes you think the leg stops there, but it actually goes back a couple more mil.

Just being pottering today and haven't got as much done as i would have liked, but this should give a rough idea as to where Im going with this chap. Hes going to have a new mag for his bolt gun in his hand ready to load, on his thigh mag pouches one is going to have its flap open ( stop that giggling Ross ;)). Im not completely sure as to his head position yet, on one hand he is supposed to be a well trained bounty hunter who should be able to change mags without looking, but having him looking down does tie the miniature together a bit better. I think I`ll just do a dry fit with another head to see whats what.

Hey, how'd you know!?!?!?

Want my opinion on the head? No? Well here it is, I think if he's looking at his reload then whoever happens to look at the model will be drawn to where he's looking. I understand what you mean by experianced merc, but perhaps to justify it he could be in down time behind a wall checking he's putting a full mag in before he gets stuck back in again?

How that 'daddy' (Just trying that term out :D )

Im at work all this weekend so sculpting/ painting time is going to be at a minimum, but I thought I have a play about with paint and figure out my colour scheme, Im having to upload it because I cant access photobuket from work. I think Im going to go for khaki and really dark grey for the armour rather than black which will be murder to shade highlight. What I`m also planning on doing is working out some sort of symbol ( think predator symbols) to go on the tabard things.

again Ive just been pottering about the last few days , so theres no massive updates on the team although Ive started getting them painted up. I think Im going to have to raise the mud guards up a bit, I gave it a go with the smaller wheels but they just seemed a bit to "ickle" I think the other gangs would laugh at them :D The mud guards are held on more through luck than anything, so It shouldn`t take too long to shift them a bit.

Cheers, for berets, the best way I find is to saw off thetop of the blokeys head your working on, so it slants forward ( ie. more flesh showing on the back then the front) then gently smooth the beret down over the right side to about ear height. then get an arrow tip stlye sculpting tool and flatten the area over the right eye where the cap badge would go, so the line of flat ( so to speak) starts at the edge of the flappy bit.

Leave that question with me because in my all incompassing mongitude Ive forgotton what you call it:evilgrin:
I got it off ebay, its not a resin its a plastic that melts at about 100 degrees so all you do is chuck some of it in boiling water and then smooch it in your mould, you can even reuse it so any buts you need to trim off it can go back in the pot.

I'm also planning on doing ogryn para cross breeds , I was going to have boots as vets and paras as stormies ( or visa versa) but a mate of mine buys his "gear" off a para and said when he met his section they all had no necks and were wider than they were tall, so Im thinking Ork bodies with uniforms added with stens as ripper guns.
However which ever I`m going to do first its going to be a while until my next update as apparently I will also be responsible for cleaning and feeding the bairn when it arrives ( any day now).

did you use a greenstuff mould for the boiling plastic?, how did you make it two part?

Did you just squish two haveld together and cut off the excess ?

Cheers

I used the same plastic stuff for the mold aswell, its doesn`t adhere to the already hardened stuff to it woks perfectly. I basically just made a small disc for one side of the mold, pressed in the sculpt, let it dry then press some more over the otherside, once that dries ( 60secs) just pull it apart and you can start making casts.

P.s Im going to try and post up some of my latest stuff tonight, I have been painting/ converting ect but I havent gotten round to uploading any pics due to the sproggling using up all the space on my camera:D

The lass on the far left is a hasslefree adventurer I'm not sure of her name though.

The other four are barring weapons and the odd part scratch built. The one on the far right is supposed to be Harlon Nayl from Ravenor/Eisenhorn, the red Guy is Skittari and the two buff fellows are gland warriors from the Inquisitor rule book.

The Inquisitor himself has space marine greaves, scout thighs and torso, Kroot shoulder pads and a hasslefree head

edit. Catferret. Cheers good to be back, Yeah hes the harby one I had him made up as the punisher for months with an M4 but got bored and stuck some body armour on him.

Nice work here. Although I do think that the Marines legs a a bit to sounded, kind of like barrels. You could probobly just file them down so they are more straight, and less chubby looking. Besides that I think your work is awesome.

I agree 100% with the marine legs I had a hell of a time trying get them straight the problem was the green stuff wouldn't file down properly so they look a bit bowling ballish , he is now unfortunatly base coated as I got that annoyed trying to add a little, then file a little I just though sod it and started painting.

THis week I have been mostly doing guards men, Ive decided Im going to do a platoon or two of bog standard guardsmen. Ive also decided to try and be a bit smoother with my painting as I tend to be a bit lazy and rush things, s hopefully these are a bit smoother in their highlights and shading. Im also painting the parts separately.

Their pig iron colony militia with west wind heads. I changed the barrels aswell to make them more lasgunny. I'm not too happy with the colour I may do them in a darker colour scheme.

Ive been very slow this week and have only just finished my first 5 troopers, although Theres plenty in the pipeline. I also won a big lot of heavy weapons stuff on EBAY so I'll hopefully be getting started on some heavy weapons teams when I get a minute.

Ive gone for a realistically ish kind of look for my chaps with their uniforms roughly supposed to look like MARPAT with carbine lasguns with lamps attatched and they currently hail from the Laskian sump dogs 69 regt. "the Breachers"
