I'm currently rebuilding some Zerkers and melding them into my Undivided army for when the new dex comes out. They'll likely be a ragtag lot of CSM's with lots of Zerks mixed in for a Khornate slant.

Let it be known that Krug the Beheader and his Warhost the Soul Reapers are rampaging through the Eastern fringe leaving in their wake nothing but carnage and death!

This is my WIP thread for everything Chaos. Let's begin with my WIP Zerker test model; I have based him on the old 2nd ed Khorne assault marines http://www.solegends.com/citcat94/cat1994152-03.htm in the middle of the page. I've chosen not to try to convert the bare legs. So I am going for a bare arm on the CC weapon side of the minis.

Next up the Daemon Prince I've been working on. I tried to convey the Daemonic corruption from DOW in his base, so far I think it's going well.

For sure that is just the base coat on the arm, he's still very much a WIP.

Yea, I think those look awesome. I can't tell if anything is converted on the deamon lord or not (I don't know anything about chaos), but he looks cool. I'm really in love with the way you designed that Marine though. He looks great. I'm looking forward to updates :)

Agreed! Great work, I like the red as well.

Ross
08-07-2007, 08:04
That's a realy great bezerker there, the flesh adds to the model I think, breaks up the red. Just 7 more to do for a squad ;)
The base on the demon prince looks great, how'd you manage to come up with that effect?

The sword ... it looks good, but would it add if you put an edging highlight of grey? Just a thought.

BDJV
08-07-2007, 18:45
Thanks for the comments guys, I really appreciate them! If you are all interested I could post up my recipe for the red.

Ross which sword? If you are talking about the berserker there is a grey highlight on the chainsword, it is just very subtle. I just don't like harsh grey highlights on black.

When I get back from gaming tonight I'll post up some progress on the DP.

Thanks again.

Yeah, I stopped posting there about a year ago because some people just love to go through tanking scores.

I really like the way this fig turned out so I figured I'd give it another go.

The score dropped again while I was typing this, all I can say is wow.

BDJV, I like your style.

BDJV
10-07-2007, 20:29
Thanks for the comments guys!

Ok letís start with the paint recipe. I was asked for this via PM so I though I'd share it with the group.

I painted these using the Vallejo versions of GW paints and Iron Wind Metals red (old Ral Partha). The highlights were successive blends with each solid highlight covering less surface space on each armored plate; staring at eighty percent of the plates. On the lower part of each plate below the solid highlight I striped the highlight with each highlight being narrower and covering less surface. The striping gives (at least in my eyes) a little bit of depth to the flat surfaces on the armor. All paint for the highlights was thinned down to the consistency of milk.

Black prime
Scab red base coat
Brown ink magic wash
2 parts scab red + 1 part red gore this is the only solid highlight color covering 80% of the armored plates.
Scab red + red gore 50/50.
1 part Scab red + 2 parts red gore
Red gore
2 parts Red gore + 1 part IWM red
Red gore + IWM red 50/50
1 part Red gore + 2 parts IWM red
IWM red

Sorry no update on the DP yet, I got sidetracked last night. I'm off today I'm planing on getting some work done.

I did build a few more Zerkers, here they are.

What should I do with the Aspiring Champions head?

Skull helmet or bare head?

Dark Apostle197
10-07-2007, 21:39
Is the guy on the left compensating for something?

For the AC it depends on what you want. To be practical I would say helmet, because even as a normal battle brother I would not risk a lucky shot from a lasgun making me go blind. For cool/modelling wise I say headless because it makes him stand out, and flesh sometimes really make models stand out from the rest. So it depends on what you are going for.

BDJV

It's that darned chainaxe head; it's so dang big. I've been thinking about shortening it a little.

Thanks for the replies. I'm very fond of the Bronze armor, the colors of the warband are red, bronze and gold.

Ross
14-07-2007, 00:36
Red bronze and gold. I'd go with Khorne then, cause, y'know....... :D

Looking good mate, planning on doing any daemons or maybe a bloodthirster?

BDJV
14-07-2007, 01:03
Yeah, I'm planning on doing some Daemons but am not sure what I'll use to represent them.

For lesser Daemons maybe dryad bodies with beastman heads and arms with the left over bits from the new spawns thrown in for good measure.

I have a Bloodthirster but am now not sure weather to paint him for this army or my Fantasy Chaos army. Generic greater daemons in the next codex don't have wings.

Ross
14-07-2007, 01:34
They ***** what? Just another reason GW is going to $hit!! Oh well, looks like I'll be stuck useing the current CSM codex for the next 20 years!!

Nice idea on the generic daemons by the way, they should look fantastic:)

BDJV
14-07-2007, 04:58
Yeah, it kinda stinks for now but apparently they are going to bring the daemons of the gods back next year in a Daemon codex.

Here is a mock up of the color scheme for the non-cult marines in the army.

Is that going to be bone or rotting flesh type colour? (you know, brownish or greeninsh) Or even a metalic?

BDJV
14-07-2007, 06:19
Bronze :D, the torso and pack will be Bronze metallic similar to the DP's armor.

Nice Paintscheme, looks interesting (Bronze and Blood? thats just screaming Khorne)

How does everyone get such nice, shaded paintcheme pics? I use the GW online painter but that's just flat colour and pre-determined coloured bits, I'd like to get nice looking painscheme pics to.

Much appreciated

Good luck with this awsome (if steady) log

Looking good, what sort of list are you working on for this? Any vehicles to be included?

BDJV
15-07-2007, 01:29
I've got a bunch of vehicles 4 Rhinos, 2 Predators, 1 Landraider, 2 Defilers and 2 Dreads. Ive got a rough list here somewhere of what I'm planning on having in a 1500 and 1750 list. I'll post them when I find them.

Ross
15-07-2007, 04:22
That's a lot of heavy choices (man they'll look cool), will you be doing enough for 2 force organisation charts or just throw in the models for a game that suits your mood?

BDJV
15-07-2007, 05:28
Well in the new codex the Dreads move to elites so that really leaves me with two or three extra heavy support to swap in and out. With Apocalypse coming I'll be able to use them all!

The base for the army will be;
1 Daemon prince
3 squads of 8 or 10 Zerkers
1 Raptor squad of 8 w/mark of Khorne
2 Predators one of each type
6 Terminators 1 RAC w/mark of Khorne
1 Dread not sure weather he'll have TL lascannons or TL autocannons
and at least one Rhino being as they are getting cheaper.

I'm also planning on having access to a havoc squad 2 AC's and 2 ML's

I'll fill out the rest once the codex is out. Besides this should keep me very busy until then.

I'm a nitpickey bastard, but . . . Raptors and Terminators can't take the Mark of Khorne in the new codex.

But I assume you ment ICON of Khorne. They are two different things and no one seems to be able to keep them straight.

@FigureFour , yeah you are being nitpicky, but Whatever.

Small update

Thanks DA,
I'd have him done by now if I could figure out what to do with the darned sword. It's slowing me down because of confusion on my part.

This is part of the reason I'm toying with my guard it gives me a release so I can come back fresh a day later. So I'll probably alternate updating each log and work on both projects. Hopefully it'll be a productive endeavor.

Dark Apostle197
18-07-2007, 05:25
Maybe make it all flamy looking?

BDJV
18-07-2007, 05:33
Yeah, I have thought about the flame look or a red or dark green blended power sword type look. The problem is the faintly sculpted runes on blade; so it is almost a one shot deal to get it right with out losing the detail at least that is the way it seems to me.

I think I'm just being indecisive.

BDJV
29-07-2007, 10:33
Sorry for the lack of updates, I burned my hand and couldn't paint.

This is a small update with one pic. Here is the shoulder pad that will go on his left arm. It still needs a couple of highlights on the red. Sorry it is a bit shiny it's not been sealed yet.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/EasyEight/40K/DPSPresized.jpg

A few changes/updates on the Price. The drill been removed from his left gauntlet; I got tired of banging it and bending the tip. I've replaced it with a skull melded into the gun barrel, though I'm still not sure about this. I'll paint it tomorrow and get your opinion.

I started the sword the plan is that it will be a red with fire like runes. not sure about this though it's not got much surface to work with.

Thanks for looking,
Jim

I had a suggestion on another forum to have a gun barrel sticking out of the skulls mouth on the left forearm. Usually I would never make another conversion to a model but I thought it's a Kool idea! I decided if I do it to take it a little further.

How about a "Flaming Skull"?!

I wanted to use a SM flamer it just looks too big.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/EasyEight/40K/DPflamer2resized.jpg

This looks about the right size.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/EasyEight/40K/DPflamerresized.jpg

It's a concept and not permanent so Ignore the yellow tac. I'd add more details too it, like a hose coming from under the skull and a modern igniter from a current flamer. What do you think?

Thanks for the comments and thoughts. I really appreciate the feedback!

Ok update time! After two days trying to make a mediocre idea work Iíve made a breakthrough. I originally used the skull on the DPís left arm because I was afraid of screwing up the bronze paint. Well I decided I could fix it if I had too and this is what I originally wanted to do, and what the heck it worked. Iím really glad I decided to take a chance! It's not 100 percent done yet but it's getting there and I think it's looking effective.

Ooooh, this army will look awesome once you get it done. I love those old school-style Berzerkers. :)

Good job on swapping the skull-with-attached-cigarette-lighter for a daemonic Ungor head instead - looks much more daemonic and it fits nicely with his leering knee.

Ok, I really like the way the DP's armor turned out. The mutated and warped effect looks great when painted. I'm debating warping all of the big armor plates on all of my chaos marines except the Zerkers. I'm gonna start painting my Raptors squad next. I've done some GS work in an attempt to have the warped styled armor like the DP. The GS should be dry enough to start working on him tomorrow afternoon.

I really like the skin tone on your Zerkers as is.
I think the overall model may be a tad too dark if you dim the skin tones. And anyway, the one you've done is incredible.

And the DP?
Friggen amazing.

Thanks for the comments!

Ok, here is more progress on the raptor. I think I'll have to lighten the shade of the armor a little from what I did with the DP. It looks a little to dark on a smaller miniature.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/EasyEight/40K/raptor5resized.jpg

I've been messin with this Champion and I think with a little more streaking this will be the better shade of bronze for the standard sized models.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/EasyEight/40K/AChamp1resizedCopy1.jpg

I'd really appreciate some feedback on the two shades of bronze. Which one do you like and why?

Thanks,
Jim

P.S. Also remember they are both WIP minis.

Ross
15-08-2007, 06:22
I like them both as they both have their purposes :D

The darker on the raptor suits the more menacing, possesed-fleash-streaked armour, whereas the lighter one on the champion has a goldish tint to it, suiting a grander leader character.

Take some asprin and close your eyes.........

If I was forced to decide (and I should have really put this in that other post :D ), the darker will suit your general models IMO, as you said you were thinking of doing the stretched flesh/armour for your regulars, while the lighter, richer tone will suit champions, bezerkers, and cleaner vehicles.

Hows that? :)

Dude you you just made my night! I'm so glad you're here, it wouldn't be the same postin this project with out you!

Thanks for the comments. The Raptors armor does look more like aged bronze.

I may be worrying over nothing though, I do like the way the Raptor is looking. Maybe when he's finished I'll have a better idea if the armor is too dark.

Darkseer
15-08-2007, 07:24
I think you need another colour to offset all the metallics.

The daemon prince's flesh does this very well, but on the fully armoured models, they look too metallic.

16-08-2007, 00:04
Ok, I've been working on my problem with the armor, I've decided to up the patina corrosion level in the armor. This is the green hue that bronze turns as it ages. Here is an ancient Greek helmet as an example.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/EasyEight/40K/bronzehelmet.jpg

At one point last night the armor was almost that same color, but I've toned it down.

Small update,
I got the other 7 Raptors cleaned up and primed so they are ready to get some paint.

I love Terminators and they are a great Elite choice in the new Chaos codex. The new Terminators are great looking and lord knows I'll get some. They are big and have the option for dynamic poses.

I already have 25 of the old Terminators and don't want to just scrap them. So I thought to myself how do I update these models to make em at least a little comparable to the new minis.

At first I thought about cuttin' them up and makin' them bigger that way, but I decided that would be way too much work.

I decided to widen them out a little at the shoulders to help reinforce their size and I added some plasticard strip to the bottom of the feet to gain some height. The termies head is now at the same level with a PA CSM.

Here are a couple of quick shots I took, sorry I just primed him so he's a little dark.

I'm holding back pictures of the Raptors until they are more complete.

See you're keeping with the close combat theme with the bp's a chainswords, cool. What other anti-tank weapons will you be including?

BDJV
31-08-2007, 04:23
In the new codex all basic Chaos marines have bolters, bolt pistols and CCW's.

I'm repainting two squads of my old chaos models; about half of them are armed with just CCW's. Unfortunately this is how GW packaged them originally. This will be the first refurbished squad, and it'll probably lose the lascannon as soon as I figure out what I did with my missile launcher blisters.

So these are gonna be some dual purpose bad boys.

I'm planning on having access to a couple of preds, 4 Obliterators, a Vidicator and a Melta toting Bike squad for anti-tank work.

I'll have access to 4 chaos Rhinos when the army is done, but right now they are still in the boxes.

It's taken me 30 years of trial and error to get where I'm at. In fact I had to learn to stop and finish models cause I used to just keep doing more and more work.

It was a vicious cycle with me thinking I can do more to make them look better. The end result was never having anything really done.

The flesh started off as an old RalPartha paint color East Asian which is unfortunately oop. This color was mixed with the Vallejo version of GW rotting flesh for the highlights. There are probably 6 or 8 highlights each with more rotting flesh added to the mix.

I'll see if I can find a Vallejo equivalent for the EA flesh.

It was a vicious cycle with me thinking I can do more to make them look better. The end result was never having anything really done.

Something that I was always ashamed of, it's how my fellow country people work and think, the kind of people who are not open minded and still think that we, the hobbyists , are persons who "play with toy soldiers and board games instead of going out and look for some chick". Years and years of this treatment while you don't have where to turn to, you don't have many people who are in the hobby (in fact most of us are known to each other and sometimes not with the best results), a single Game's Fair twice per year with all kinds of stuff in it (RPG, card games, minature and strategy games). In general the hobby here is rotting. Decomposing. Nurgle's Rott man. Most of the times you don't get the boost from other gamers, or you can't get the boost. There was a time, back in the 2nd edition, where there was a small core of people, who were good at the hobby, but as time passed by they scattered around.

Sorry for the mumbling, but it was something that I needed to let out.. :(

P.S. And I won't mention the transport fees my country applies on the goods comming from the rest of the EU.

Ok, I've been working on building and converting my second squad of Chaos Marines. I plan on converting all 10 marines to make a unique squad.
Here's a how to for making Marines who look like they are aiming before they shoot.

Here is what I've done so far, I started with the arms that hold the bolter at an upward angle. (high port is the military term IIRC)

I cut off both hands at the wrists

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/EasyEight/40K/conversions/shooter1resized.jpg

Then I drilled holes on the wrists and hands for pinning. Then I used some Hobbytac (basically thick sticky PVA) to hold the arms in place while I positioned the hands. I did the right hand fist, so I had the leveled position for the bolter in the right position before moving on to the left hand.

BDJV, I think I have a man crush on you. You are made of awesome and win.

It'll be cool working on my new Khorne force side-by-side with you. Maybe I'll get a log started as well...

How did you paint the flesh on your demon prince? I've got to steal it.

Hey man, these pics are sweet, not loving the colour scheme (don't yell? its just not my taste) but well painted and neat, and i love the mutlitude of WiP pics, really getting a feel for the hard work your doing. Working on upgrading/updating my chaos army at the moment too, but unlike you i'm totally Khorne themed. Hey any good painting tips you can share with the masses? I'm big on modelling/converting but i'm a terrible painter, will post pics if anyone is interested?
Anyhow, keep up the good work dude :)

I answered this on the last page but I'll repeat it for my biggest fan.

The flesh started off as an old RalPartha paint color East Asian which is unfortunately OOP. This color was mixed with the Vallejo version of GW rotting flesh for the highlights. There are probably 6 or 8 highlights each with more rotting flesh added to the mix.

Ironduke suggested GW graveyard earth as a good match for the old RP paint and I concur.

It's OK, the bronze armor does not work for everyone!

What kind of painting advice are you lookin' for?

The best general advice I can give is to take your time painting and do not getting discouraged. You just need to preserver through the rough times. Through practice and patience your painting skill will advance over time.

I finally got my camera back, so here is a quick update.

I've been working on the conversions for the 2nd squad. I've got 7 done, I'm currently working on the Champ. I have given him a PFist and a quasi Mk IV chest plate.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/EasyEight/40K/conversions/CSMChamp2resizedCopy1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/EasyEight/40K/conversions/CSMChampresized.jpg

Now here's the problem What should I do for the right arm?
a) hanging strait down at his side holding his bolter
b) have a bent arm pointing down at a 45 degree angle
c) have the arm cross body like he's prepared to shoot in the direction he is lookin'

More pictures soon, probably tomorrow night. :D

Ross
18-09-2007, 08:25
I know it's not one of your suggested poses, but one of my favorite's is having the pistol pointing in the air with the arm coming close to a 'V' shape.

I like the piece you used for the neck, clever :)

BDJV
18-09-2007, 08:40
Not a bad suggestion, I'm just afraid that pose might make him look like he was fallin' over backwards. Especially since I want him holding a Bolter.

Mighty Chicken
18-09-2007, 08:42
I agree with Ross – by using the regular arm with the bolt-pistol and replacing the pistol with a bolter this should be achieved in no time.
Your options a) and b) sound fine, too, but would look a lot more passive. And I must confess I don’t really like option c), as I reckon a model should either point or aim in one particular direction – but not both at the same time.

Anyway – I truly like your army so far with all those fine conversions! Please keep it up!

Cheers,
MC

Thanks OSoI! Yes, I've been painting the Vindicator and a Dakka Predator. I'm just having trouble with the color scheme on the vehicles. I'm just not happy with them, which is why I haven't posted WIP pics of them.

I've been adding more red to the scheme on the tanks and they are looking better, but at this point I'm not sure that this scheme will work on the beasties.

nice colour, how did you make it?

It's Vallejo model color Bronze with a heavy washing of a black green I mixed up for this army. The mix for the wash is from craft paints 2/3 Ceramcoat Black green with 1/3 black mixed in to darken it up a bit more. I also mix in two GW base coat brush loads of Brown ink into the wash.

The Champion is done. I tried all of the arm positions and this is the one that looks best. IMO

Tomorrow I'm gonna start to paint the first 8 minis of the second squad. The first squad that I posted will get finished and then become a reserve squad for large games.

I like the more modified 2nd squad and will make this style the norm for the army.

I'm off from work tomorrow and I've got a comp day next week so will be off three days. So the plan is to complete both squads and the Vindi by next weekend.

BDJV
25-09-2007, 02:25
Thanks for the replies. OSoI I think it's the angle of the pics, cause I really worked hard when I changed the rock under his foot to get him to stand pretty level.

Ok I thought I'd add a little "Doghouse effect" to the thread and give you some of the background for my army. This is the first time I've written any fluff in probably 6 or 7 years. I'm not the greatest of writers so keep that in mind.

Krug ‘the Beheader’ once a great hero of the Imperium is now the harbinger of death to those that oppose him. He leads the Soul Reapers a warband of bloodthirsty and relentless followers of Chaos. This is a chronicle of whom he once was culminating in who he has become.

Midius Krug was the captain of the 13th great company of the World Eaters space marines. He fought as his brothers had during the Great Crusade on many nameless planets across the galaxy. He had great respect for the Warmaster a man who Krug had impressed on more than one occasion. Because of this Krug was tasked to retrieve an artifact known as the Soul Stone for the Emperor from a planet far beyond the north eastern edge of known space.

Krug was to take the 13th and choose any other great company to act as a reserve force. Krug was hesitant to choose another World Eaters company because of the wide spread use of aggression chips; something that the 13th had very few of. Because of this they have become unpredictable and not a great choice for a reserve force. For the second company he chose Captain Markus Titus and the 15th of the Death Guard. He had earned the respect and friendship of Krug on the Karpathian campaign. He knew if there was trouble he could count on the resolve of Titus and his Company.

Because of this mission they missed the great betrayal known as the Horus Heresy. They returned on the fringes of known space five years after the battle for Terra.

Upon returning they were attacked and hunted by their former brothers. Krug was infuriated at what Horus had done and that his loyalist brothers would attack him without question or honor. He has vowed not to rest until all who betrayed him are dead.

He has taken up residence in a warp storm that is now called the Storm of Souls. Located between the Centaurus Arm and the Ghoul Stars it is outside of the normal Imperial shipping lanes and is the perfect place to plot his revenge.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/EasyEight/40K/SoulReapers.jpg

Krug has made pacts with all of the Chaos gods and with the help of the Soul Stone none of them may lay claim him.

He has three lieutenants to aid him exacting his revenge.

His second in command is Captain Markus Titus formerly of the Death Guard or as he is now known Titus the Butcher of Lambosha. He has become a powerful Daemon prince.

Xusia of Dellus Chaos Sorcerer of Slaanesh the last living World Eaters psyker.

Jor Locke Chaos Sorcerer of Tzeentch the changer of ways.

Now I'll get back to painting!

I've been waiting for an excuse to offer constructive criticism on these amazing models, and I think I see it! The Aspiring Champion could stand to have larger pupils, it looks like. Sad that it took me so long to find a single tiny debatable flaw, eh?

With that out of the way, GORGEOUS stuff! I love the green wash over the bronze and the rich, deep colors you've chosen to use. Colorful while still being subdued and sophisticated.

I don't recall if you ever mentioned getting some of the new Possessed, but I wish you would. I'd really, really like to see the flesh formula used on your Daemon Prince applied to the Possessed mutations.

Keep it up!

Hey guys, I sold my old Chaos World Eaters army to a friend and I am going to use the money to pick up a bunch of the new Chaos minis.

I figured Iíd go through and make a list of what Iíve got on the list to paint for Chaos.

Major conversions
Make a Chaos Lord using Obliterator legs
Convert my second Daemon price model Iím gonna add Wings and reposition his legs
Convert a Generic Greater Daemon out of a Doombull model
Convert 20 or so Generic Daemons out of Beastmen (think Daemonic Rabbit men!)

2 Chaos Sorcerers
48 basic Chaos Marines
10 heavy weapons CSMís
24 Berzerkers
10 Noise Marines (old classic models)
20 Thousand Sons
40 Plague Marines (old classic models)
1 standard Chaos Dread
2 RT era Imp Dreads to convert into the Preheresy style
20 Raptors
10 Chaos Bikes
9 yes 9 Obliterators! (I traded with an IW player for most of them)
20 Terminators
3 Predators
1 Vindicator
2 Defilers
6 Rhinos
1 possibly 2 Landraiders

Things I need to purchase.
20 Possessed Marines (10 to use the bodies for my Chosen)
10 New Terminators
2 new Terminator Lords
Tide of Spawn box for Apocalypse
Vindicator Line Breaker squadron for Apocalypse

Now that I look at this list Iím gonna be painting Chaos until the end of time. So lets realistically look at my 2000-point list. This is the stuff Iíll focus on getting done; once done Iíll figure out the next 1000-points to make my 3000-point Apocalypse army. Then Iíll be free to move on and do other projects and the Chaos can be my subproject for the foreseeable future.

The Pgunner is done minus the shoulder insignia and the basing. I tried a Purple plasma coil and really hated it. So I went with the old reliable green coils.

Thanks Dude.

Here's an update on the Olblit; I'm getting ready to really dig into the flesh tone today. The flesh will end up a very similar shade to that of the DP.

He turned out mucxh better than I thought he would when I started this conversion.

For reds I start off with GW red gore then brown ink it. The I lighten the red gore with Iron Wind metals red two times, the final highlight is full strength IWM red. Topped off with a red glaze over the whole red area. HTH

Looking good, not a real fan of bronze armour (looks alittle green to me) BUT your army does look fantastic, and your skin tones are amazing, cant wait for more
