Well hello everyone.
First im gonna apologise for my keyboard, the space bars bust....
anyway i signed up for the tale of 40k painters with 2000 pts of imperial fists.
i need to get approx 200 pts painted by the end of july.
bit of a task as i had no paints or models until today.

Anyway im painting imperial fists and hopefully i will get ahead of myself and get over 2000 pts at some point.

ok month one consists of a 5 man tac squad with a razorback.

nice and simple...

except its yellow....

first i got my paint set out.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/marsekay/painter.jpg

Then i chacked my sprues...

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/marsekay/12072007300.jpg

Yep all there!!

Ok nexty i cleaned up and assembled the squad. the bolters were notfixed for ease of painting....

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/marsekay/12072007301.jpg

i made the interior section of the razorback as i wanted to prime that black.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/marsekay/12072007303.jpg

i then drybrushed the interior in boltgun metal and gave the bolters a good rubbing also!

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/marsekay/12072007304.jpg

i might highlight the metals with a very fine drybrushing of chainmail. i will decide later...

heres a view of the interior iof razorback just drybrushed.

dull i know!

ive yet to paint the tv screens etc...

i TRIED to take a pic of a basecoated fist but my phone cam let me down, it looks all washed out ehre lol, the lighting was poor so i will try again in the sun tomo. :D

i might have to break the digital cam out, to stop everything looking pastel lol.

Oh yeah i have a tech for yellow.

i am basically going for JCB yellow, not cat yellow, its a slightly orange yellow think in between yellow and orange but more yellow.........

lots of people take the brown approach but that doesnt give you jcb yellow results!! i want a proper "golden" yellow not the dirty brown yellow.

anyway base coat is 5 parts golden yellow to 1 part fiery orange :D

its more colourfull than in that washed out pic though!

and pleease try and not notice the awfully painted datsun 280z painted in electromotiv livery...

Too late. I noticed. Lovely work on the marines though, would it be possible to get some better photos?

And here I was feeling sorry for myself painting red with only yellow helmets. Good luck, your task is far tougher than mine.

The yellow looks really good so far.

Maybe I'll end up signing up for the Tale of 40K Painters too...hope its not too late.

I think, so long as you sign up before the end of the month, you're ok.

Not much to add, just been blacklining and drybrushing metals.

heres where i am so far,

need to detail highlight and clean him up as yet.

Nice job, especially on the blacklining.

If you accept CC, you missed the mold lines on the helm and the arms

I second (or should I say, third) the posts above - that is a very nice consistent yellow, and nicely shaded / lined also. Looking forward to seeing the finished article.

BTW, you mentioned just having done the drybrushing. Do you drybrush at the beginning or end? - I'm finding it easier just to do all my metal drybrushing at the outset, then painting the armour on my marines - it saves a bit of time.

Cheers

outstanding? how so? its just an average first go after 2 years to me lol, but i hope to get better!

Nice job, especially on the blacklining.

the blacklining was not as bad as i originally feared, just wouldnt wanna blackline when drunk!

as to the mold lines, i know, i thought i had em all but i realise i missed some. must do better next time!

Too late. I noticed. Lovely work on the marines though, would it be possible to get some better photos?

Yeah im trying i dug out the digi cam instead of phone cam on the last one, i think its better?

Oh yeah and i wanna name all these marines, so for the first 5 marines first come first serve on SENSIlBE names.

There's ALWAYS another mold line. Always. Always always always.

Every time I see Imperial Fists I want to do an army of them. I don't know why. Maybe it's the strong yellow (which you've done an outstanding job on).

Marine Luciano?

And the lining between the plates looks pretty neat too.

CaptainSenioris
14-07-2007, 09:42
That's very nice, for the next one can we see some work in progress shots? I'd like to see them as you do them, I already have my Imperial Fists finished but am curious as to what technique you use. As much as these are kinda in stages I'd like to see the blackening in more detail as it is the part that I had trouble with when I tried starting with white undercoat.

As to the mold lines they are gonna have to stay on this squad and be better prepped on the next!

Very nice yellow.
And the lining between the plates looks pretty neat too.

cheers,i used to use orange ink (no longer sold) to "blackline" yellow but i think if you are neat enough, black looks a bit more gritty and cool.

I will try to get WIP shots in on squad 2, then again i have only basecoated and washed this squad apart from this guy so i will go from there!

blacklining literally is watered down black ink and applied with a steady hand and a fine detail brush! (in all part joins and armour creases etc)

nice work!

as for names how about;

Brother Severous
Sergeant Ferando

Well Serverous is in, just one name each please lol :D unless i have no other takers!

3 more needed for this squad!

I was gonna pen but went with watered down black ink a fine brush and a steady hand.

alas i kinda messed up a bit o my blacklining on the first model, but hes pretty much done, needs a base and a weapon.

for a first attempt, i dont think its too bad!

That is an awesome Imperial Fist. Only thing letting it down is that the bolter looks a bit too plain in a way, I think its that the boltgun metal areas are too dark, maybe put some more boltgun metal on there, would help a whole lot, other than that they are sweet.

Oh and Marine names Brother Mathis?

I see what you mean about the bolters, i thought the same thing,

from now on i may do the little icons Eg the skulls and eagles on the casings in gold perhaps? might liven them up a bit...

consider Mathis in, i think thats 3! i need 2 more!

Marsekay

I still can't get over how good that yellow looks.

What's your technique?

its evolved a little since my last IF's but only a touch,

prime white
couple of watered down coats of 5 parts golden yellow to 1 part blazing orange.

wash with heavily thinned 5 part yellow ink to 1 part red ink

repaint anything not yellow black (apart from eyes they done diff)

drybrush any metal bits

paint anything else as usual

then highlight yellow

which is thinned down stages of the following

1 golden yellow liberally
4 parts golden yellow to 1 part skull white
3 parts golden yellow to 1 part skull white
then for final highlight
1 to 1 golden yellow to skull white.

if doing characters i will add more stages in between the highlights....

I then drybrushed the metals (gets messy here...)

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/marsekay/drybrush.jpg

And heres where i am now, just finished the purity seals.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/marsekay/current.jpg

next up shoulder pad trim and eyes,

after that its yellow highlight time!!!

By the way i am after marine parts ( i have a thread in trading wanteds)

Mainly "antiquey" parts like studded pads etc, errant armour things that are not basic if that makes sense!!

still after 2 more marine names1 (i think....)

keep the C+C coming!

Man, that yellow looks good. I do have one query for you though. Seeing as the yellow seems like such a labour intensive process, why would you then do your drybrushing of the boltgun metal after you're done the yellow? Looks like you're just asking for trouble.

I question your sanity, in choosing this army for the Tale of 40k Painters/Resident Nutjobs.

I was wondering the same thing myself. I'm not nearly as good a painter as you are (I'm still in awe of that yellow...) but I drybrush the metal parts first thing so it doesn't matter if I slop a bit.

Haha, the reason is the yellow basecoating goes everywhere!!! even more so than drybrushing, my drybrushing is quite targetted so it gives minor problems.

Hes finished!

as are the rest of them. the names were supplied by people in my project log thread!

cheers to you guys!

lots of lessons learnt.

1= get rid of those mold lines! i thought i had em all but i obviously didnt.

2=my method, you can just about see theres few diff techniques used in there, the one far left got over highlighted, i wont be using that one, however the far right pair were the simplest and also my fave, they kept the base yellow without pastilling it out too much (which is a fate i believe sarge in the center succumbed to!) so thats the method from now on!

3= transfers suck! get some setting solutions for the next batch!

4= did i say transfers sucked?

5=the bolters metal looks too dark, its just black drybrudhed boltgun then a fine chainmail, i might paint em chainmail, ink with black and blue mix next time? make em nice and bright and shiny!

anyway heres the finished squad, just need a dullcote spray and their razorback painting!

be aware top pic was with flash bottom without, the actual RL colours is somewhere inbetween lol!!

Drinks for everyone!!!

To be honest, I've never been much of a fan of having jerry cans exposed on the hull. You're just asking for someone to make them explode.

However, if you're set on using them, a dark green, or even a bright red, might not be a bad choice.

That's looking good. Couple of questions.

Are you planning on leaving the mounting for the Heavy Bolters black? If so, I can only assume that you're planning on highlighting it.

Also, it looks like there was a little bit of a slip with the boltgun metal at the front of the ammo box. I know it's picky, but I wasn't sure if you had seen that or not.

Keep it up, like I said, it looks great. And let us know when those hatch covers get to you.

I posted this over on the tale of 40K painters thread. Thought I'd throw it up over here too.

Marse, the Razorback looks great, even with the crappy phone picture. The yellow is really warm and vibrant. The only thing I'd change is the vents around the exhaust, I think they need to be more heavily blacklined.

Do you mean inside the 3 vents on either side of the exhaust stacks? assuming they are actually vents.....

i see what you mean, my weathering brush wont get in there but i could always paint inside there black. it would make more sense.

This is the kind of launcher i will be converting for my whirlwinds.

I will be using the current rhinos with this launcher.

hardest bits gonna be figuring out what to use as the "spacer" between hull and launcher....

The green whirlwind was someone of warseer from about a year and a half ago, hence i forget the name!

Quick question, do you not like the FW whirlwind variants or the GW one? Just seems like a lot of work.

How about 'Jones' for one of your scouts? Dad's army cracks me up, and surely not all space marines have posh names.

Spacers for the hull and missile launcher? How about a few different size washers from a hardware store? They're circular and a large one under a smaller one gives it some definition.

Actually, if you can get hold of some, the old hexagonal bases would look cool. A bit more angular in appearance to suit to conversion you're doing.

I believe some manufacturers still use hex bases so...

Cheers, the clothingis painted over black primer,
its a coat of catachan green
then a wash of watered down black ink/dark green ink
then catachan/camo 1/1 mix for highlight 1
then finally just camo green for the final highlight.

Intriguing, do tell!

Well i was gonna get 3 Fw vindicators for this month but as the plastic Gw version is close i will wait and pick between the two, either way they will get FW doors etc,

the whirlys WILL get fw doors etc,

the tactical squads will have mk 4 armour from the red scorpion squads, but i wont need the red scorpion badges so i can sell them off again.

gonna get 3 land raiders so im probably gonna have to get a pre heresy one just for variation, with lots of Fw icons ;)

as to the splurge? lets just say i may want a certain flying center piece... tho i am torn between which version to get.....

luckily i earn enough to buy **** like this lol, the missus has her "hobbys" such as modelling shoots which cost her 100 bunters a time for standing around for a couple of hours so if she can justify silly money on hobby persuits, then i can too without feeling guilty!

my only other hobby is my truck, havnt spent much on it recently but im looking at buying a suspension lift kit for her as i just put on my big wheels :)

here she is for those who may be interested.

still no sign mr crube, though today i realised i think i might have needed 60mm bases? if they exist, 40mm SOUNDS small, it needs to have a width that has 4x4 circles on the bottom i believe...

i wonder which is right...

Anyway yeah the FW stuff is cool, i bought some for an old army once. i like the diversity.

on another note, i bought an airbrush today with mini compressor, if im painting lots of tanks at once, i aint using a normal brush!!

firstly, This arrived.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/marsekay/airbrushy.jpg

A mini compressor and 2 airbrushes, should make my tank painting a little smoother.

Ok secondly ive been trying to think of a suitable captain for this force, and thought a new spin on this old mark terminator (top right one)

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/marsekay/termy.jpg

ive already approached a couple of well known green stuff cavaliers to enquire about commision talents to produce it for me. i want to paint it myself of course!

oh two good tips on face painting 1.start with a base of scorched brown, mix dwarf flesh and scorched brown and paint it over everything bar the deep recesses mix in elf flesh for the first highlight, then a final highlight of elf flesh on its own.
2.basecoat mix of 1 part red gore 4 parts dwarf flesh all over,a light wash of red and flesh was followd by a highlight of dwarf and pallid flesh mix and a final highlight of dwarf pallid and a very tiny ammount of skull white!

As to the cactuar, i like the idea, he may need the "joker" style make up around his mouth. could be funny!

Heres a WIP of the commander.
the face is the only bit nearly done and the little pipes in the head area, everything else is still super messy!

nice

infact konig you couldnt be further(or closer)from the truth, that fact of the matter is, the new terminators arnt any bigger than the previous ones theyve just been sculpted and posed in such a way that they look bigger because things were made slightly larger(shoulder pads)and stuff like that,so the termi captain will actually be bigger :) so now you know :)

thanks for that, im keeping it up right now, 2 more whirlwinds on the way.

i was unsure on the weathering.

im really in 2 minds about it. what makes it good and why???

I like the way it conrasts the yellow and manages to stay looking realistic, my only criticism is that it seems to spread a little too much across the side. It has a sooty 'gas caused' look which I think looks good on Imperial fist vehicles I do it myself but it doesn't look as good as yours.

Marsekay
25-09-2007, 10:12
The sideways weathering was to convey when moving forward the smoke was getting "left behind" that was the plan anyway.

the last 2 whirlwinds are nearly finished. pics up soon i hope!

Marsekay
25-09-2007, 15:56
Have to say im getting bored with these whirlwinds now and its showing in my painting, i just want them done so i can crack on with the terminators!

anyway heres and update
wip's of both

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/marsekay/sidefist1.jpg

Still to do on these

1: gas cans on one of them
2: the tracks both paint and assemble
3:the bullet hole marks (seemed a good idea at the time now i wish i hadnt!)
4:yellow highlights and shading
5:the little radar dished
6:the multi launchers.

hey hey... look in that first pic of the whrilwinds.... see on the front right of the hull there, not all the pieces come together well? ive had that problem as well and im just wondering if anyone knows why. it seems to run rampant. the rhino kit is rather easy to put together, and i consider myself pretty capable too....

just wonderin.

yeah in the box you could just make rhinos. the extra armour and dozers and guns are all on one extra sprue. you also get the chaos hatch parts so you can make imperial or chaos. at last i have some mk4 helemts, the chaos gunner has one! as to pics give me today and i will post some up this afternoon!

I'm the only idiot crazy enough to prime Imperial Fists black:D

Marsekay

Yeah they are primed white, then anything thats not gonna be yellow (pretty much everything) gets painted black!

actually, when i primed the launchers i primed the top half and base parts seperate to the middle part which was primed black, i then stuck them together.

They got their white priming and their 2 coats of yellow. then i did the eyes as i find its easier earlier on??? anyway, i then gave everything thats not gonna be yellow a quick watered down black coat to paint offof which gives me a nice little black outline on everything, i use inks also but not always.

I just stumbled on this thread at work after you commented on my SM army list... (Which got switched to an 1850pt static list. Going to take some retooling, and static lists are pretty dull IMO.)

Back to this thread, Thanks for burning up a good hour of downtime ;)

Anyway, those are super impressive man. I wish I had the time to go to that level of detail. I don't have the skills you do, but if the time existed I could at least try. IF are pretty cool, and yours are definitely masterwork. Your tanks especially look phenomenal.

I have a couple of questions:

1) Where did you find those delicious shoulder pads for your IF Terminators? Man I'want to have those! (I mean both the Crux and Fist versions)

2) How did you get that smooth black on your tanks? Is it spray undercoat?

nice work mate!
You are going to have a fantastic army when finished. I picked up the linebreaker squad as well and hope I do as good a job as you. Do you airbrush the tanks?

I meant the primed tanks in the post with the finished Terminators.

I absolutely love your terminators! Even though they're bright yellow, they still look very menacing. Great job.

Can't wait to see those vindicators finished as well.. :>

Cheers mate, and no i do have an airbrush but i just give em a couple o thinner coats with a brush!

Ahhh, yeah anything i can get away with priming black i do so i normally end up priming some parts white and some black, depending on what part it is, (ie all yellow areas are primed white and all other, black!)

Looking good, just as the rest of the stuff. But please stop giving me these silly urges to paint up a yellow marine army. I need to work on my 'stealers, damnit! :p

Great work Marsekay that is an amazing yellow you have there. But I have to know, what is that vanilla treat that looks like it would give me an instant heart attack?? If I still ate sugary stuff I would devour that in like 2 seconds lol.

Cheers,

Girathon

Your battle company is going to look great with those vindicators and whirlwinds supporting them, you tried priming all those Sapce marines yet? Gonna need a lot of spray.:cries:
