Well I'm back home in Canada after a long exchange term in Gold Coast Australia in which I painted a few hundred points of Black Templars. Now I'm back home and I've only got a few more pieces left to paint before I finish off my Tyranid and Ultramarines armies.

So here's a list of what I have left to paint:

ULTRAMARINES: my first army started like 8 years ago!!!
2 Predators (1 Completed)
3 Marines with Bolters (Completed)
3 Marines with Plasmaguns (Completed)
2 Marines with Lascannons (Completed)

already painted pieces here:
http://s81.photobucket.com/albums/j232/ultramarines/Ultramarines/

TYRANIDS: started last summer
3 Forgeworld Ripper Swarms
2 Carnifexes
1 Walking Tyrant
1 Flying Tyrant (Completed)
12 genestealers (Completed)

already painted pieces here:
http://s81.photobucket.com/albums/j232/ultramarines/Tyranids/

So the painting adventure begins here. It shouldn't take that long to finish off all these pieces. Hopefully within the next month or so I can boast 2 finished armies!

Alright so since writing this I've been busy painting so here's what I've accomplished:

All the marines in power armor (done in an oldschool scheme to match my army)

1st predator

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j232/ultramarines/Ultramarines/pred2.jpg

Tyranids in next post

3 Ranged Warriors

13 Genestealers

I'm really looking forward to finishing these armies because that means I get to start my World Eaters army, just in time for the release of the new Chaos models in september :)

Looking good there... are they transfers on the Pred, or is it freehand? If they;re transfers, they look great, and very 'non-shiny'...

And those 'Nids look great. What colours have you used?

That bone color looks real good on the 'nids, Titan. Goes well with the blue and grey.

The Ultramarines look really clean also, good job

Great painting! I really like the nids! Now please paint the green flock like sand or gravel, will you? They look very early 3rd ed. when it's green ;)

You know what, I'm normally not one for the old scheme (red weapons and yellow trim) but these look brilliant!

The nids look damn good too. Very interesting palette of colours. Can't wait to see more from you!

Its already been said, but no harm in saying again - the colour scheme on those Nids is very effective and an interesting and unique choice of colours. Nice job with the Ultras also, particularly the highlighting.

Thanks for the encouragement guys

nah no transfers here, particularly because of that shiny look you mentioned. i've been trying to do all symbols and such in freehand

Awesome nids! What colors are those?
the colors used on the nids were codex grey (in various layers) for the skin, scorched brown, snakebite and bleached bone for the carapace and ultramarines blue and iceblue for the blue bits, hope that helps

Typically I'd be all for going fancier on the bases but i was trying to paint these guys to match my half painted army so all the bases have to match too

You know what, I'm normally not one for the old scheme (reg weapons and yellow trim) but these look brilliant!

Thanks, i do think it looks a bit dated but i did my best. we can't all have goldtrimmed ultras :D

Both the nids and the UMs are quite nice. It'll be great to play against them if we ever get a chance to have a game.

I want to see how you do the FW rippers, should be interesting.

Great chitin. It contrasts nicely with the understated gray flesh.

I like the old school style for the Ultramarines. Don't get to see that very often any more. Are you having a hard time getting the classic boltguns, or do you have a stockpile?

Not looking forward to the rippers actually, i keep looking at them and thinking "i'm going to need a smaller brush..." Thats the problem when you only have a standard brush that comes with the paintset lol

Actually all the bolters are current edition, unless you're refering to stuff in my photobucket in which case, they were current edition when I started the army heh

Slaved away for a week and got another two carnifexs done. Here they are:

And here's one more with all the 'Zillas so far:
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j232/ultramarines/Tyranids/carnis_and_tyrant.jpg

I'm very excited actually. I've got most of what I need for basic games painted and I really just have 3 ripper bases, a tyrant with two tyrant guard (which i might leave for later) left to paint before the army is complete.

Some of the best nids I've seen. Very well done! I'm a fan of the color selection, the blue really pops in contrast to the grey and cream.

Paint this in the last 3 days, about 20 or so hours of work in there. I really liked this mini mainly because its the last Ultramarines I'll be painting in a while, the army's finally done...after like 10 years...army shots soon.

I think that is impossible to put into words the amazingness of your army's. So here goes a good try.

Wow.

Great stuff... I do think, from the piccies here, that as great as the Smurfs are, the Nids are greater...

Ah hell, they're both bloomin awesome, keep it up :D

jase: my eyes hurt from all the squinting, i would usually take about the same amount of time on a mini, just spread out in more sessions. i got a bit carried away with tiggy because he's the final piece of my UM army (for now)

so the ultramarines army is more or less finished for the moment. I can think of a couple of other things i want to add but none of them are mandatory for now...

The tyranid army is coming along too:

I can't believe all this only adds up to 1700 points :P

Awesome work, too bad I missed the start of this work. I love your Tigurius, the blue is amazing.

The Tyranids are great.:D Always wanted to see the force that was behind those three alien eyes in your avatar.

@titan136: I'm testing the waters as it were. I want to get some games in with this army and possibly sell it to start a Sons of Guilliman 1st Company army, or Guilliwing as I call it occasionally.

Both armies are amazing, but the nids are something else (in a good way).

You should do a tutorial/step-by-step on the recipe used for your nids. I am torn between schemes right now and so want to run some test minis (gaunts) to see what best looks to me in the flesh.

titan136
28-01-2008, 05:10
wow, haven't updated this log since august!

Vineas, the colors I used for the nids were:

Carapace:
Scorched brown
watered down black ink wash
snakebite stripes
overlapping bleached bone stripes

Skin:
Codex grey
watered down black ink wash
codex grey+ skull white highlight

Blue parts:
ultramarine blue base
ice blue highlight

Ive actually got some stuff to show you guys:

I painted up these forgeworld rippers a while back but don't think i ever posted them, needless to say my eyes bled after painting these guys:

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j232/ultramarines/Tyranids/rippers1-1.jpg

I also painted these genestealers last week. Finally got around to basing them tonight:

Wow, gray tyranids, genestealers with gray fleshy bits? I was thinking of trying gray carapace on some of stealers for my cult but I thought/convinced myself out of the idea. Now I see your lil` beauties and I`m gonna try out . Thanks for the inspiration!:D Gray looks awesome on nids!

Could you give me a quick run down on how you painted the carapace, the colours I understand but, the technique/style (strips/strippling). I`m about ready to do the carapace on my Patriarch Guard and would love some hints and tips from you. What you have done with your nids is pretty much what I`m trying to achieve but, I`ve never done nids before. Please help?
