I had a unit of 10 Spider Riders that was charged by a unit of 8 Silver Helms.
Given that my General was within 12", I used his leadership for the fear test.

As we did not see a clear rule for this, we agreed to permit it, was this correct?

Yes, it was. It's generally clearly stated in the rules when you can't use the general's leadership. The only examples I can think of is Stubborn and a couple of magic items.

You did fine.

BRB, p.82: Any unit within 12" may use the GEneral's Ld for an ld-based test it is required to take.

And Makaber - Stubborn units may explicitly use the General's Ld as well, as can be read on p.78. They may not use it with Break Tests, though, if they want to retain their unmodified Ld (in cases where this is higher).

I knew I had read that!, .... I just could not find it again.
I'm a noob, gotta read some more. :)

Thanks Festus

Indeed, you were correct.

It has to explicitly state the unit's own leadership value must be used for it to be otherwise.
