EDIT: Resurrection.
Reason: see here (http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2734473#post2734473).

Hi!

It's been a long time I've been off this site; from February to June I've been fighting with my Internet provider to release me and let me pay some other provider for the net access; A bitter struggle finally ended in a success so here I am!

And don't think I haven't been doing any modelling through that period...

I re-vamped my whole Adeptus Mechanicus army with new infantry models, new HQ models, new tanks, and a new army list and way it plays!

I currently have 1850-2000pts force using the Abhumans: Slave Levies doctrine (from WD). All with hand-made models.

Anyways, comments welcome!

The army (sorry for blurry pics and poor lighting in these. I'll try to shoot them again sometime soon):

Skiitarii (veterans) These models are from my 1st Ad Mech army - the intention was to use them for the elite units, while the Hattiphnatii are basically just reprogrammed servitors.

The troops are my own sculpts, and this time we have a production mould ready!

The tracked chassis is my own build too, no productions casts as of yet. Expanding the range will depend on interest in the basic models.

The cables were coated with 4+ layers of Vallejo Still Water for the glassy effect.

They were weathered with dry pastels for that dusty look.

This army is pure GOLD.

It's all been said!!!

These are trully sweet. I much preffer these to the mechanicus mark 1. These have a proper gothic feel to them. I must say I would love to see a couple of WIP pictures if only to get a feel for just how much work went into creating these.

My hat is off to you sir ! once again a superior Quality army!!

Woah

Amazing work, Hortwerth - I just know somehow that if/when FW get round to making Ad Mech stuff it won't be as unique and characterful as this army.

My only criticism is that as the Knights have no cock-pit for a driver (unlike most takes on them), the model isn't quite balanced out so the legs look a bit too spindly.

But hey, I'd never be able to produce work of this quality in a million years, so who am I to criticise! :p :D

Thanks a lot for comments!

The infantry models (Hattiphnatii ;)) are my own sculpts and will be available from the second part of August from Micro Art Studio. We will take some for the Euro team tournament in Gorzow Wielkpolski on 11th&12th of August 2007.

The Battleknight models count as Leman Russes. The rectangular base under the round cd-base is of the exact russ size, and helps deciding which facing is towards the enemy.
The Hellstalker counts as hellhound.
Hattiphnatii infantry are IG with Abhumans and Slave Levies doctrine.
The Archtechnomagos counts as Daemonhunters Inquisitor in terminator armour, with Psycannon, hood, tarot, etc - the exact wargear depends on the size of game.
Engineseers are Engineseers, Electromagos counts as Eversor (obviously). Skiitarii count as Veterans.
Hattiphnatii Riders count as just Rough Riders with lances.

The beauty of having troops of your own devising is that as long as you keep the WYSIWYG coherent, you can count various parts of the models as some extra wargear. I could easily field the models with many other Guard doctrines, as long as I keep things counting as the same throughout the entire army. If I say the legs on the tanks count as Rough Terrain Modification (don't they?), I have to field every walker with this upgrade.

Now, onto the pics!

I'm certain FW guys will once again reach the peak of tiny fiddly gorgeous detailyness they've been doing with the Krieg models. I'm looking forward to these, but I'm sure they'll come with a nigh-unplayable rules and overburdened with points cost. It's nice to have models for the more basic buggers.

With all these models I was chasing the unhuman look, with spidery arms, legs, too long and too thin bodies, and I consciously did not armour or shorten the legs of the battleknights, and used just a robotic head instead of a cocpit. I prefer to think of all Ad Mech machines as not operated by servitors, but getting the servitor's brain to run them.

The ultimate merging of steel and flesh, with the best of both!

Cool, Troop Transports like this would rock.

I actually would really like that. I though of this already but not as much as to have solved the issue where would all the troops be contained - the legs make the outline of the vehicle a lot bigger than it's actually is.

I rather thought of making an anti-grav floating troop transport (think Chimera) with the rear section of the hull (the actual troop compartment) open to the rear and bottom, with either rails or just magnets in the roof and the models hanging there head-down (that would allow me to load the transport with the actual models it's transporting).

SC

Thanks!

Do you mean the rust on the bases? I found not everyone likes the effect as it's generally considered "too orange" by many, but I like it since it gives so much colour to the on the whole dark models.

Here's the run-down for you:

1st paint metal:
Basecoat Tin Bitz,
Drybrush Boltgun (it's better to do 2 gentle brushes than 1 heavy)
Drybrush Chainmail,
Drybrush Mithril.
Wash with Vallejo smoke/water/washing liquid mix ~1:2:1
wait until dry.
wash again,
wait until dry.

2nd: rust:
get a very old, stiff tank brush or larger that doesn't hold the point anymore and cut its bristles by a third. This is for stippling a random pattern on. Stippling: just stabbing around with the paintbrush, with an amount of paint on in-between normal painting and drybrushing. It's best if the bristles are actually spread away rather than forming a point. I find it generally a refreshing and amusing process.
Stipple Blood Red over edges and areas where metal meets base, over some larger rocks and stones - generally, over the metal stuff and all around.
Stipple Blazing Orange on top of that (but only half as much)
Stipple Fiery Orange over that (but again half as much as blazing)
Wait until all is dry.
Wash most of the rust and most of the surroundings with Snakebite Leather/water mix ~1:4
wait until dry.
Wash 60-70% of the rust areas (but more to the edges of it rather than the middle) and some random spots around with Bestial Brown/water mix ~1:4
wait until dry.
Wash some parts of it with Dark Flesh/water ~1:3 mix
Wait until dry.
Wash everything with a very diluted Chaos Black/water mix (~1:6-1:8, etc)

The last bit is to tie all the colours together. It actually makes the rust look less like rust should (as the black gets mostly where the brightest rust should be), but it's a compromise that makes it look more like we are used to with painting miniatures.

I was thinking of doing walker transports for my Renegade marines, i was thinking if you removed (what i thought was) the fuel pack at the back and put a box section, probably needs a bit more thought though.

Nice. They look like thinner versions of your old Iron Brotherhood minis. Speaking of which... when are you going to finish the range Hortwerth? I have 22 of them sitting in my room right now, and I plan on buying more... a lot more...

Oh but you may want to work on your resin casting skills, lots of airbubbles and broken hosing on them, otherwise ace.

Again, these models(not the Iron Brotherhood ones, the ones you showed in this thread) are awesome, and really well painted too.

Again, these models(not the Iron Brotherhood ones, the ones you showed in this thread) are awesome, and really well painted too.

That's just because there were no production moulds for the first models, just a one-part cut-through mould that needed lots of attention when pouring resin and even then got some areas where the air could not escape from. We have production moulds done already for the new models, and they'll be of much better casting quality.

If they find any interest, I will re-address the original models, giving them the body-and-arms-separate treatment.

Also, I painted the bellies as skin, but take a look at the Archtechnomagos Imeth Salernia, Technomagos Mortensen Rakesian and technomagos Vorkimus Agemosa. Note the latter has the body painted as skin and the first 2 have bodies painted as armourr, and it looks good either way. This means the models can be used as either lightly-armoured or heavy armoured.

Also, these larger HQ models are a possible later addition to the range.

Very VERY cool!

How many Defiler kits did you use? What parts are used for the knights?

Sorry, no WIP pics of the Salernia's creations.

I used 3 Defiler kits in total (4 actually, but that's another story). Each one will produce a Battleknight and a Hellstalker. You'll need Chaos smoke launchers, IG Heavy Bolters (or other weapons), Platformer refinery set (for the rear of Hellknights and upper back of Battleknights, also the exhausts use pipes from this set),
25mm bases for the arms, and some 14mm or 16mm PVC piping for the arms and drum mags, and 10mm PVC (plastruct) piping for cannon - but any model cannon would do.
The heads of battleknights are Defiler head separated from its base and mounted on a searchlight base which got then attached at a 90deg angle to the defiler head base.
Also, you'd need to scratchbuild the leg armour.
The cabling is from a broken PC power unit (the spaghetti inside your PC). It has a good diameter and is bent easily, plus it stays in the bent shape and thus holds the legs in the desired position without glueing it.

That's fair enough! I think, being an Epic player, it's hard for me to get my head round Knights which aren't pilotted - but I can appreciate your logic, which in no way disrupts the established Ad Mech background.

Looking at the models again this morning, you're right, the 'distorted' take does look inhuman, and is quite freaky - there is this strange mix of gribbly-ness and technology about the Ad Mech background that is almost horrific, and which a lot of people often overlook, but you've captured it perfectly in your models (especially with those Stalkers).

Once again, well done, I applaud your work heartily! :)

That's right. Right now there's a major hydraulics refit in the whole buiding so the Production dept. took themselves some free time till the end of the week (there was fire and flood caused on 2 subsequent days by the workers - it's impossible to work in such conditions). When my hands got there, I found that my oculars had already fused themselves in joy.

The bases are lovely, I really like the feel they confer to the minis giving them a gloomy setting with some nice addition to the colour scheme. The infantry look ace nice slim minis and the heavy weapon teams are drop dead sexy^^ the titans looks good the leds make them look better but I think the strange legs are a bit wierd IMO but still looks good, the addition of minis to the bases of the titans made them a part of the army great work on that!

further more the "hellhounds" looks damn nice I think I´ll have to steal that idea for a khornate armored company XD the charachters looks imposing and very unique I really like the look of these, the pretorians looks great as well but their weapons looks a bit static.. hmmm I don´t know how to explain it....

I work as an editor, so it's fun to have a hobby where I can intentionally mangle words!
Off the top of my head...
[catwalk commentator]Here we have Archtechnomagos Imeth Salernia: simply fabulous in his opulent macro-flak robes, who this season is modelling the mark XIV mass-reactive coilgun; a rapid-firing hose-cooled solid slug delivering system. To ensure instant termination of anyone attempting to siphon off the Omnissiah's (praisebehisname) holy knowledge, he wears a 'Firewall'-class aegis crown, officially declared Perdita in M34, but still manufactured to order. This is supported by the PPP (precognitive prejudice pack); an implanted dataslate that provides rapid analysis of the local environment conditions. This information can then be used to produce a range of likely action projections – essentially allowing the Arch-Magos to see a short way into the future.[/catwalk commentator]

Keep us updated on the manufacture – I'm keen to get some!

Well, I went to ETC 2007 in Gorzow Wielkopolski to see some foreign players and play a few games on the singles tournament. I didn't fare very well to be honest, but I had a blast, lots of beers on Friday and Saturday (I was driving on Sunday) and met lots of interesting and nice people.

The event was huge for our standards, with 250+ players alone (not counting spectators, etc). There were 4 tournaments running at the same time, 2 important ones and 2 for the ones like me. There were an European Team Championship in WFB and in Wh40k, and singles tournament for both.

This is the WFB side of the hall:

In the first day I just couldn't roll any dice decently - I feel that my results were mainly due to lack of luck:

In the first battle I faced Iron Warriors, and despite my best efforts I just couldn't kill the Daemon Prince on the turn he failed to damage my Demolisher and stood in front of half my army. Then he proceeded to swipe my coutercharge and mop the entire flank. I managed to hold on to 3 points (3:17) just by surviving with the rest of tanks.

He had a Tau Flying Circus army, with 5 tanks and lots of Crisis suits, and deepstriking HQ and monat.

The mission was Secure and Control with 5 markers. I had a pretty good plan and managed to get a 1st turn Eversor charge on the Crisis suits. Then it all went out of the window as for 6 turns I failed to do anything important, with the only effects on Devilfishes being "weapon Destroyed" twice and "Crew Shaken" once on Hammerhead. the deepstriking lord popped my Demolisher, and my infantry got shot to pieces. I only managed to hold on to 2 tanks just by hiding them and then racing to counters, which proved irrelevant because I just couldn't reduce the count of his scoring units. I got massacred 0:20

On the second day I didn't take pictures.

The 3rd game was against Khorne army with 2 Defilers, Predator, Greater Daemon, speedy Prince, biker Chosen, one squad of Bloodletters and a squad of Berzerkers (The bloodletter models he scheduled to borrow for the tournament didn't show up and he had to field the ridiculous Berzerker unit).

The luck turned totally, with his Defilers killing a total of 8 models between themselves in 6 turns of shooting, the Greater Daemon failing his instability by 4 on the 1st turn he could after just immobilising Demolisher (6 attacks, 4 hit, 1 penetrate... All he needed to make any effedct was 6+ on 2d6), his Daemon Prince bought it from Rough Riders, and all that was left in my lines was a manic khorne chosen bikers with lightning claws each. Quite an overkill squad. All I could do about it was moving so that he could butcher just 1 squad per turn. I then managed to repair the immobilised Demolisher, and immobilise a Leman Russ by getting into difficult terrain moving 6" with Rough Terrain Mod. The game ended 11:9 for me.

The last game I played with Dark Angels Deathwing-style force. Land Raider, Whirlwind, Predator, 2 small squads of Marines with flamers and fists, command squad with Librarian in a Rhino, 2 Deep Striking Terminator squads and 1 in Land Raider.
The mission was Take and Hold with Preliminary Bombardment, and began by my opponent showing that luck was on my side in this game too. With 14 rolls for Preliminary Bombardment he failed to hit a single squad, whilst I managed to pin 1 small Marine squad. After a very cautious start on both sides, with his units trying to use terrain to snipe my heavy weapons with good effect, his command squad arrived right in front of my lines and dismounted behind the rhino, and consequently bought 2 spot-on Battlecannon shells, leaving just the Librarian behind a smoking Rhino. The Predator got his Lascannon shot off and immobilised, then I took the lascannons off the land raider one by one. Some Terminators landed to shoot my infantry and got shot to pieces by some other squads nearby, then both small Marine squads got shot, a second Terminator squad that was sniping my heavy weapons got a taste of its own medicine with the Assault Cannon one being the only eligible target. The Librarian then tried to get into my lines but shot with a flamer-like psychic power, took all the models off his charge range, and got shot point-blank.

Then it was a race to the central spot, with Land Raider with Terminators sitting just on top of it, with Demilisher, Leman Russ, Hellhound and some infantry camping at its sides. The game ended on 6th turn, with the score of 13:7 for me.

Then was the bit I came to this tournament for, voting for Player's Choice, which I happened to win!

I then set the army up at a free table at the side of the hall for everyone to look at.

27.06.2008 Update!

A new addition to the army: Seraphims!

Finally I made a decent set of mechanical wings and suiting models:

A Canoness (sort of) has 2 sets of wings:

I'm slightly gutted that I can only play in a Gw store so I can't use those amazing infantry models.
I am however very tempted to build some Hellstalkers and then make an all Skiitarii army out of converted GW models.

Those wings are amazing, I've always loved tech style wings, be it DaVinci style or even more metal like the ones you've got there.

Brilliant :D, I'm gutted I cant use them in a gw store without covering up 70% of the model in gw stuff. :(

The Iron Brothers are what you're looking for. They cant be sold as "Ad Mech" as thats a GW Intellectual Property. Hortwerths Iron Brotherhood are an independent range of minis that conveniently could be used as very convincing stan d-ins for Ad Mech style models.

And loving the Seraphim Hortwerth, great work as always.

@Anodyr... Ahhhh ha. Completely understood. Just didn't see the variety of models on the first page of the thread, and saw some other references in the thread to the models on page 1 being "different from the older Iron Brotherhood" minis. No, I am Hortwerth, but I closely cooperate with Micro Art Studio. Such as making all the models in the Studio. Such as having my sculpts casted in the Studio.

There are several guys like me working together under the Micro Art Studio badge.

Glad you like the models!

I liked the 'very red' scheme on teh Seraphim until I saw them in the pic. I now consider adding the bone cog trim to their hoods.

I registered for this site just to tell you how absolutely blown away I was with this army! I mean, MY GODS, what an amazing talent you have! You have inspired me to begin modeling again after 13 years off! I have started today modeling a Squat Stronghold force. My dream is that it could one day be a quarter of your Ad Mech army in skill, display, originality or sheer talent.

I've started on an Overlord Armoured Airship and Termite, and have just ordered all kinds of exo-armoured Hearthguard and bikes/trikes to work on today.

Thank you for inspiring me!

Righty-oh. I'm at a loss whether to use them as Dark Mechanicus for my chaos forces or as loyalists. I figure if i convert one of the arms to a gun, and have a Tech-priest with a kai gun (counts as doombolt) it would be a great way to sneak an extra unit of thousand sons in ;).

As for the winged ones, they are simply fantastic! I think cogged trim on the hoods would improve the already great scheme on them. Adds a bit of extra detail to it.

Ok, so I finally added the cog trim to the hoods of the winged Seraphims, and I finally got the axes. I mounted them with magnets at the wrist, the problem is the wrist cog is just about the same diameter as the 3mm magnet, making drilling a hole and placing the magnet still possible, yet very tricky.

I sculpted some flames on 2 axes to use these models as armed with flamers.

The "Canoness" Technomagos:
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/Hortwerh/Adeptus%20Mechanicus%202008/Iron%20Brotherhood%20MkII%20Mechanical%20Wings/SeraphimCanoness1.jpg

One of the flamers-armed Seraphim:

Well, he said he was casting a take on his 'original' MKI Iron Brotherhood, so I got all excited!:o

Edit: oh, I've seen those, the one I posted is in a different paint scheme, the same scheme as the ones MAS are selling the MKII's under. Still have hope!!!

The new ones will be based on these models (not this particular design though). I re-did the feet and ankles, arms and weapons. I also made the eyes as in the ones included with the tracked chassis - much crisper detail.

Still no news on when we'll get the castings.

Should be soon-ish though.

OH MY GOD!!!!! You are the Omnissiah's chief disciple aren't you? YOU ARE AMAZING. Question though, the vehicles are your own creation right? A chance you can get Micro Art to cast those?

I'm afraid not, as these are copyrighted GW plastics, only assembled in a wacky way. Please feel free to use the ideas i presented here to assemble your Defiler kits the right way!

I'm working on something different (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3732766&postcount=103), yet vehicle related right now.

Oh darn. Wait, you used a defiler? Is that is? I realize you added wire and stuff, but no other models?

Edit: Are the Ad 2 going to still going to be sold when you make V3?

Just the platformer chemical plant (http://www.thewarstore.com/product18602.html) kit and an odd electrical PVC tubing available at any crafts store

Yes, this is just expanding the range. Still, it seems it may be 2-3 months before they are available as they weren't sent for moulding last month as I was told :cries:

Oh. Cool. I will hopefully get some similiar creations. I'll probably make something a bit different that will have a differerant basic design.

Cool, I can't wait. :)

Hortwerth, haven't those "new" models been around for years? I have at least 20 of them sitting in a zip-loc bag on my desk right now...

EDIT: Read back farther, guess they are some sort of redesign? They look the same to me. Will definitely be buying more...
EDIT(again): I need to learn to read...

Given this thread was started in August 2007 and with all the release rule and codex changes, if I wanted to try something similar what army codex could I use using the 'count as' rule, I actually think Eldar would be best as the rules for sweeping hawks, wraithlord and war walkers cover the majority of the stuff. maybe even Necron

Impirial guard with WH/DH allies is the obvious choice... (troops, hqs, veterans, heavy weapon teams, hell-variants, leman russes)

You could also do Necrons as you mentioned but I think it would be too limited for Eldar unless if you do more conversions yourselves.

On another note,

the current models sold from Microarts are the mechanised warriors, the main warriors and the seraphim style troops. The ones you mention as "veterans" are what you refer to as the new line? Do you have an idea of a release date for those? Are we looking for something in summer or well-into september?

in that release will there be anything else added? like those HQ conversion options or something else or just iron brotherhood, veterans, mechanised guys and seraphim style?

Yes, conversion options for some HQ would be awesome, but I'm still hoping for some heavy weapons arms for the tracked Brotherhood!!!!:D
