Here's a Mk 2 New and improved Working Thread for y'all! I'll start with Harry's original message and the current list of painters. Since the 31st of July has passed, there can be no more new painters!

THE TALE OF 40K PAINTERS

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to complete a 2000 point Warhammer 40000 army in the next twelve months.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with the last day of July 2007.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc., they get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post saying "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. 200 points for 10 out of the next 12 months.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.

All chat, questions, discussion, WIP, painting advice, encouragement, tutorials, etc, etc, should be on this thread.
(or in individual painters own project logs).

A new thread will be opened on the last day of each month (and will remain open for a week) for each painter to post one, and only one post with the next 200 point ‘update’ for the army they are painting and a picture of the army to date.
(OR one post for EACH army for those nutters painting more than one army!)

I will just take this opportunity to thank all the painters who have signed up for their interest and enthusiasm and for their ideas that have helped shape this project. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope this project is a big sucess for everyone involved. I also hope 'the viewers at home' enjoy this results of all the work of the painters involved.

Cheers,
Harry (& McMullet)

60 painters. 65 armies. WOW! What a great result.

From what I have seen so far the standard of painting on the 40K side is remarkable. Really inspirational.

It will be wonderful to see all these armies unfold over the coming months.

Ok you see this is what i have to put up with!!!! rofl. Nice work with that one, keep it up for the next 11 months and i'll post you all the ingredients and recipe for a cookie as i doubt it would get through customs...:D

To everyone who has posted their finished units at the end of month one, bloody good work people! fantastic stuff there, cant wait to see next month now!

As soon as i get a chance im going to start on the next few termis for the unit. Then im going to try and find enough marines lying around to do the kill team and start modeling them (if your nice i will post wips). Keep the good work coming and once again thanks to McMullet and Harry for coming up with this idea and keeping it going!

This month's plan:

Hoping to refine some of the techniques I started using on my first Assault Squad, I plan on working on my second Assault Squad this month. I've got the metal parts all drybrushed now and they are waiting for their basecoats.

My only problem is that that squad will only total around 165 points...I'm sort of at a loss for what do to to get myself at the magic number of 200. I do have one extra assault marine who I was planning on putting in a Vet. Assault Squad so I may do him up in that scheme as a test and that should put me fairly close to 190 or so (which, when averaged with my July total puts me at 200 a month!).

I also have a Chaplain I could work on but doing him would shoot me well over 250 points...

We shall see I suppose.

Outstanding work so far to everyone who has posted! Your stuff looks great!

Okay, this is my first update...

Really just in construction and some basecoating modes.. but its progress nonetheless.

Hope you like it.
Bear in mind, the weapon teams are headless because I am waiting for a big Forgeworld order.

Also, check out the exhaust conversion on the un-primed russ, as well as the Godwyn Pattern Heavy Bolter in the hull.

Mmm, unprocessed cookie ingredients...

Just a quick question, what's the points cost for your termies? I know it isn't a legal unit yet, but I have this spreadsheet and I want to keep track of what everyone's doing. Mmm, spreadsheet.

The assault marines look great, the red and yellow are both very clean. 165 points is fine by the way, I'm trying to keep within 20 points but 50 points plus or minus is fine. :)

@ PMTN: The destroyers are so cool. :D

@ Heldane: I really like the muted painting style you have there. Personally I wouldn't bother with any static grass, I think it might spoil the subtle look of the models. Looking forward to next month's work!

@ Crazed_Monkey: Nice looking guard. I know how you feel about the freehand...

@ Jim Reaper: More nice looking guard. You might want to use a white background and some better lighting as the models are quite dark coloured.

@Penguin663: Proper Death Guard. :) Very nurgley. Shame about the transfers though.

We are far better than that fantasy lot over there (even though im part of that too. oops). We have some great stuff so far, can't wait to see what you guys have cooked up for next month. Im contemplating redoing my eldar army for this argh.....temptation. If i get them done in the next couple of days maybe...but i have such limited paints ARgh!

Oh and on necrons. I am addicted to painting them. Monolith next month.

Right back on topic.

@McMullet - great work! Where did you get your paints from, as the yellow has a really great earthy colour to it.

@heldane - awesome, i love the mk2 bolters, and the scheme is really effective, and not one that you see very often. I love your skin work. Maybe a little more detail on the eyes of the helmeted men?

@ss_cherubael - mmmmm Grey knights. Love them, and metallics are really hard to do well, and they are often come up so badly under picture, but they look great. Maybe a little more watering of the metallics, but i don't have that much experience with them so.......Also maybe a different colour for the nemisis force weapon hafts. Just a suggestion but they look good as they are!

@Deakor - look great to me, i have a thing for blood angels so whatever you do will warm my soul.

@Crazed_monkey - seems like you had lots of mixing to do, sounds like fun! Cool that you kept with it through 2 units. Also the commander on the first unit looks really insane, it scares me slightly.

@Jim Reaper - mass infantry guard. You are a rare man (or woman), can't wait to see 2000 points amassed. <200 men ??

@penguin663 - Really good death gaurd, and an origional scheme, love em. Shame about the transfers though. Oh well, they still look awesome. Maybe you should reposition on of the meltas closer to the body.

@Marsekay - awesome, if i say any more i may swell your head. You know how good they look. ;)

Come on lads/ladies there is 65 of us. I am seeing no jokers.

after being forced to play a joker for July by a virus that hung over me for three weeks,

so for August, my project is the midnight suns second in command; the Necron lord known as 'Nights Passage'

weighing in at exactly 200pts he meets my monthly target perfectly, and since it's only one figure and I only need to make the appropriate conversion (adding a res orb arm and replacing the warscythe head with a SoL head)

a month should be more than enough time to do this mini justice

so until my first update, sayonara

And by that you mean to post by the 7th of August, right? Cuz I don't have the ability to go back in time a month and post my update. If that's the case, then I might have to play my joker. :p

Mc.Mullet how much time have we got until you close this months proceedings? Is it possible that you could add me up to the tale with a eldar army, on top of my necrons? (own craft world)

As i really am considering doing my eldar army. I'm feeling confident that i can do two at once, and i have all the bits ready to go (altough most is primed white).

I just spent the last hour getting a test figure together, and he is looking preety spiff. Here he is hot of the press. It really is limited what you can do with very few paints, and all hyped up on a good idea.

Also as you can tell i have just painted over and old model. Wasn't the best idea ever.

Sorry buddy, no can do. If you asked me yesterday, then the answer would've been yes... but we have to have a cut-off point somewhere. Already had to turn away another painter today, which is a shame. :(

Good luck with the Eldar though. :)

Thanks for the comments. The models are a little more vibrarnt in real life, probably should have spent some time to sort out better pictures.

@heldane - awesome, i love the mk2 bolters, and the scheme is really effective, and not one that you see very often. I love your skin work. Maybe a little more detail on the eyes of the helmeted men?

I decided to paint them as Raptors based on the theory that they're not overly common. Moment I put paint to brush about 4 threads on various forums came up about people painting raptors.

The skin starts as a base of vomit brown and then dependant on what I have in front of me I use either VMC ivory, elf flesh or bleached bone for highlights, some times all three. Then multiple glazes of flesh wash to tie the high lights in.

The eyes are highlighted, but the picture seems to have lost them. In the same vein, the knee pads are blended alot smoother.

El-Diablo, you work jumps out at me as completely stunning and I love the champion! Though thats not to say that everybodies work looks brilliant so far and its nice to see so many people banding together like this.

Well, off to work out what to do next.

for this month, on the chaos side, I am going to finish up the oblits that I started but couldn't get finished by the end of the month last month.

On the IG side, I have less points to play with this month (my Malcador was 300pointsish) So I am going to get an infantry squad done for the IG, probably a las/plas squad, and if there are enough points left over, I might toss in a psycher to even it out

After being back in the UK for only one day I decided to get the most important stuff out of the way first and I headed into a GW and picked up a Chimera and some paint and stuff.

I also got my new airbrush so I am ready to start painting just as soon as I get back home (I'm staying with family at the moment).

Right, I've just posted my joker in the July thread, so I thought I should show what I've actually done so far. I've been working on my first 5 man scout squad, with 3 models completed and 2 more WIP. I really want to concentrate on quality for this army, so I didn't want to rush them.

The squad so far:

http://www.castellum-obscura.co.uk/Photos/scythes/month1/wip-scouts1.jpg

The Sergeant:

http://www.castellum-obscura.co.uk/Photos/scythes/month1/scout-sgt1.jpg

All my squad leaders will be veteran sergeants, with proper marine heads etc, to represent survivors of the original chapter.

The scouts are new recruits, so will have their own hair etc. I'm not going to paint squad numbers etc on for the moment, as I havent worked out the army list yet. That will come later.

http://www.castellum-obscura.co.uk/Photos/scythes/month1/scout1.jpg
http://www.castellum-obscura.co.uk/Photos/scythes/month1/scout2.jpg

I've got to get some other painting done this month as well, as I need to finish a second Leman Russ before the X-Legion tournament. I will be aiming to finish this squad and one of my HQ characters for the To40kP this month.

Cheers
Pete

Looking good there Pete, I especially like the freehand chapter icons. :)

Were you going to do anything to "texture" the hair? It looks a bit flat as-is and could do with some streaks to make it more... well, hair-like.

Now, some stats. So far, we have 13 posters who have posted a full update, plus ss_cherubael who still hasn't told me the points cost of his Grey Knights (hint, hint). They have posted a total of 2612 2/3 points between them (plus whatever ss_cherubael's Grey Knights cost. HINT. HINT).

Nine painters this month have played a Joker, so far.

There are currently 43 painters in the 40K Tale who have not posted an update or played a Joker.

PMTN
02-08-2007, 17:02
Alright guys.

@Brother Loki - Don't worry about the joker. I am not sure if you have to do 400 points next month, but as you just got on the project it doesn't really matter. But the scouts look really promising, keep up the good work.

Can i ask how you are doing your yellow? Just a general thing i am asking everyone who is doing a Fist/yellow based army, as it may be my next army scheme.

@Marsekay/spikedog - Air brush hmmmmm, just wondering what sort of success you have with a.brushes. Does it increase the quality? Smoother finish? Mainly because i have finished a monolith, and if i have to do another one like that i am going to kill myself.

@McMullet - No problem mate, i just im already 2 months or so ahead of the amount of points needed to be done, and contemplated starting another army.

On that note, yeah i am already ahead and all my monolith needs is an appropriate bouncy ball for its crystal. Im actually going insane i have never painted stuff this fast in my life. So much for my self perceived lazyness.

Well done everyone, and can't wait to see next months!

Brother Loki
02-08-2007, 17:24
Hair: I'd love to improve the hair, but I really have no idea how. Every time I try to paint a texture like that it looks awful. In the end I gave up. Realistically, at that scale, it should look pretty uniform anyway - at least that's what I'm telling myself ;).

Yellow: Because I use a black undercoat, the yellow takes quite a few coats. I do an underpaint layer with vermin brown, just so I'm not working directly on black. The secret ingredient though is a layer or two of vomit brown, which gives a lovely warm base to work on. Then 2 or 3 thin coats of golden yellow, and a thin highlight of bad moon yellow as required. Only the shoulder pads need this much attention though, the other yellow bits aren't large flat surfaces so don't need as much. By the way, I love your purple monolith (could that sound any more dubious?) - with the stark highlights etc it looks like comic book art (in a good way).

@ PMTN
cheers for the comments on my stuff by the way,
anyway, im after an airbrush as i paint yellow, and to get yellow nice and flat on vehicles you have to thin the paint a lot which means doing loooads of coats.

hopefully an airbrush will speed up the "brushing" side of it. ;) we will see!

im gonna try basecoating with it also.

im currently doing my scouts shoulder pads. will post pics in a sec of their wip state!

EDIT: and here they are.

still working on these scouts, i am now about to highlight their yellow pads.

as yet i have the cloaks, the goggle lenses, (The goggles, they do nothing!) their hair, and their weapons, still a fair bit! oh, and bases....

heres a few pics of the sarge of a squad, a full squad and the 3 squads alltogether.

I'm really impressed by the standard of painting so far. I'm looking forward to seeing posts from the remaining 41 painters, most of whom will, I'm sure, have posted their work from July by Monday when I get back. :)

Of course, I'm also looking forward to ss-cherubael telling me how much those GK Terminators cost. :):p

For this month, since I only have 76ish points to work with (my first month was 324) I am going with an infantry squad (from an infantry platoon)
Plasma/Heavy bolter, lasguns 80 points.

Using steel legion figures for these that I won off ebay, some already have a tan coat on the coats, but that is being redone codex grey with highlights, planning on a grey/red scheme on them overall

I've been thinking about the background of my army recently and how to give them a bit of character and I think I've come up with something. It came to me while I was watching band of brothers (an amazing mini-series). A couple of weeks ago I played one of my first games with the guard and during it my infantry platoon was completely wiped out.

Band of brothers is all about a handfull of guys from easy company as they fight through the war, lose friends etc and deal with the war. Now during the war they lose alot of men and gain replacements (kids just out of college).

I was thinking that the two units I've just painted for the first month would be the replacements for the decemated 1st platoon and from now on most (probably 7/10) guardsmen will be converted to show they've been fighting for some time.

Now I need some ideas to show the difference between the new blood and the regulars. Such as conversions and paintjobs. I guess I could paint their armour more scuffed and maybe a few battle wounds etc Any Ideas?

OK so I have just cleaned up, based and undercoated my July contribution.
Bit late I know but I painted quite a bit fo stuff for the Fantasy side and tonight was the first chance I have had since completeing that lot to get anything done. (I have a good excuse lined up, however, just in case I have to joker.

But I still have three days to post until I am jokered, right?

3 colours and bases done FTW :D

You will have photos or a Joker by the end of the weekend.

@Greyclaw

Just noticed your lost and the damned models. Loving the rabble converisons.

They look to me to be WFB flaggelants, skaven arms? What about the heads?

Cheers

Dan

cheers for the complements, the bodies are flagellates so are the arms but with various weapon swaps with some las pistols and knives etc. The heads are home made with greenstuff plastic rod and wire. They turned out pretty easy to do and worked well.

I'm looking forward to seeing posts from the remaining 41 painters, most of whom will, I'm sure, have posted their work from July by Monday when I get back. :)

I will get my assualt squad done by Monday! I swear it by the blood red that is painted....... will be painted on my marines eyes!

I'm going to be finishing off as much of them as I can tomorrow before I go to work.

Hm, not sure i would send a PM to the guy who started the thread. Although i believe he has stopped taking people.

You can always start a painting log. That should give you some motivation,

@greyclaw - Love your work. Can't wait to see more.

@AnkhAngel - I have faith that you will pull through. Work through the night if you have to!

Now I need some ideas to show the difference between the new blood and the regulars. Such as conversions and paintjobs. I guess I could paint their armour more scuffed and maybe a few battle wounds etc Any Ideas?

Love Band of Brothers btw

Anyway i suppose there are several ways to represent vetrans. Using extra war gear to represent time in the feild, dirt patches, cloaks, patched clothing, ragged bearded heads from other models (like empire or chaos). All will help, but giving them different weapons and using random models/characters - much like C.Shaffer's last chancers, will give them a rag tag veteran look.

For making new recruits if you have the old eye of terror codex you will know the young recruits in there, but if not clean up their armour, give them white arm pads to represent youth, and use clean shaven young heads.

Keep up the good work lads.

On me i tryed painting a ping-pong ball today to act as my crystal for my lith. Didn't work......just annoyed me alot and got paint on me.

**edit

Look come one guys i know people have alot of things going at the moment in the real world *sniffs indifferently.

But we really need to step up the amount of people painting. I know everyone can pull something out the bag, but 4 out of 7 people have played jokers on the second page of the thread. So everyone stay up all night if you have to! Sacrifice something to the blood god just try and get something painted.

Sorry but im just annoyed that we are being beaten by those fantasy punks....

Here is my progress in the biker squad. This one was a pain to paint! Lots of yellow surfaces, and even more black! The base vas a red plastic card, I painted white stripes on it, to look like an ancient Hungarian banner.

Hey all.

Just decided that I may paint my chaplain instead this month. Managed to bash out far to many marines in the past 5 weeks.

That said, for my specialists in my force so far (tech/apoth) I've gone green armour and coloured the left arm (and back pack in techs case) with their 'traditional' station colours.

Photbucket is having some issues at the moment, so I'll try to get some pictures later. But, in the mean time, what do you guys think for a chaplain/libby? Green armour as the rest of the raptors, but black and blue arms respectively?

Cheers guys.

hey all!

after much deliberation as to what my Orky theme (to fully earn myself the title of "The Tale of 40k Painters Ork Guy™" as McMullet coined quite eloquently) would be after deciding to joker last month, I've decided that I'll be having a Deff Kompany army to "celebrate" the new Blood Angels rules. Truth be told, I love Orks, but I've never been a fan of horde armies, largely because of a lack of time on my part. I just don't have the time (with school and rowing and all) to paint the needed 100+ models for a real Ork army, so I'm doing the next best thing... a themed Ork army.

before the hate mail commences, just because they'll be counts-as Blood Angels, doesn't mean they'll be any less orky! There will simply be less of them, better equipped, and angrier... much, much angrier.

so hereby commences Project: Deff From Above.

anyway, I've started out the project with a test-ork. He isn't painted, but as the whole army is to be converted, I figured putting up a conversion as the first thing would be a good idea.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e309/Mumba_Jumba/Jump%20Orks/100_2500.jpg

sorry for the quality of the pictures, and before anybody makes any smart remarks, he's missing arms to facilitate easier painting. THEN arms will be added... but you can imagine how it looks anyway.

tell me what you think!

Good work so far guys! Special mention for that Ork. :D

We now have 12 Jokers for July, plus 18 completed updates (that'll be 19 when ss_cherubael tells me how many points he painted :p).

That does mean that there are still 33 armies from which nothing has been heard! You have until tomorrow to post your updates guys, or you'll get jokered (since I'm not online late at night, it will end up being the morning of the 8th). If you have a good reason not to make your update, let me know and I'm sure we can come to some accommodation.

Now then, now then, as Sir Jimmy Saville would say. It seems that consensus is in favour of admitting more painters to the tale, so I'm happy to go with the flow here. What do we think is a reasonable deadline to start? I'm not overly keen on letting people join in month three, because that means Jokering 2 months straight off. The point of the Jokers is to ensure that people aren't forced to drop out because they run out of painting time; if we let someone play 2 jokers straight off, then they have no leeway.

How about a deadline of Friday the 17th of August to admit new painters? That would give them a clear 3 weeks to get something done for August, whilst giving a little extra time to sign up.

I say that.

Month 2 progress report.

Currently at 50-75%:

1 Celestian Sister Superior
1 Rhino
5 Sisters (left over from Squad 1)

Currently at 0-25%:

20 Sisters from Squad 2, who are now nicely arranged in my cramped painting space.
8 Celestians

I have also been getting the pre-Chaos Codex jitters and have started going through my bits box to sort out the stuff I've been saving...

And have sitting in the Chaos corner...

10 (2nd ed. metal) Chaos Marines with Aspiring Champion and Icon of Tzeentch
4 (2nd ed) Chaos Bikers with Aspiring Champion- will be Icon of Slaanesh
1 Chaos Dreadnought
3 (3rd ed. Fabius Bile bodyguard) Chaos Marines- will be Icon of Slaanesh
3 Obliterators
5 (2nd ed.) Chaos Terminators- will be Icon of Slaanesh- still need 2 large bases for them though :(

These are all sitting pretty and waiting for the imminent arrival of my advance ordered to the store Chaos Army Set with Codex! RAWR!

And I may even be able to salvage 5 (3rd ed., 1st codex) Raptors to go with them.

And then of course I've been distracted with my Imperial Paladins SMs....

But Sisters are still priority. A squad a week shall be done!

But only a squad a month shall be photoed up and posted here :p

Agreed on the jokers.

I think if they are in a position to jump right in now (IE they have 200 points of an army ready to post this month) then let um in.

I think if they need to joker the first month (July) even thats OK. Heck lots of painters who have had a month to do this are jokering this first month. Sooo....

But after that I would call it quits.

I don't think we should let anyone in next month even if they have two lots of 200 points to post.

I definitely don't think we should let anyone in who needs to joker the first two months.

Apart from this I can't see a problem letting people in through-out the month providing they can post either this month or next. But if you want a cut of date I guess the 17th of August is as good as any other date.

Just posted my July update.

Next month is down to pretty much painting a lot more blue. And hoping to get some eldar infantry for my birthday so I have the actual army to go with things.

I have my basic colour schemes worked out. Basically, all the grey areas will be brought up to white, and the blue should remain pretty dark. The gems will be black/red based, and the eyes a more orange/red.

But I'm a little stumped for ideas for the titan's face and the crest any ideas and suggestions would be welcome.

Very nice, but I don't have you down as being in the tale. If you'd like to join please post in the Working Working thread or send me a PM.

Soulnova - I'm glad to see that you have based that up again, a vast improvement that an amazingly painted model deserved.

There seem to be a fair few East Sussex Gamers here, I've met most of you too... we should have some kind of group game at the end...

*ahem*

For those of you who are participating, this is the official thread in which you should post the work you have done in the last month. Participants in the Tale should post here ONCE and ONCE ONLY, for each army you are painting! If you are not participating, please do not post here - If you wish to comment on anyone's work please use the current working thread or look at their project log.

Oh dear. We're all making the East Sussex gamers look bad.

This chap. Chopped his head off, stuck on an Empire knights panther head without the plumes and stuff. Chopped the front of his face off and stuck the masky bit bit back on again from the original head. green stuffed some tube bits. (sorry don't know technical terms)

Loads still to do. Another extreem highlight. Pouches, Metalics, Squad leader chappies face Company colours all the other iconography, etc , etc.
However they have got three colours and finished bases.
Sorry they are a bit late. Not a very good example. I never really intended getting involved in the 40K side so left it a bit late. I will try to be on time next month. Also, sorry they are not finished but this is what I have had time to do. Right, for new sign-ups I believe we have:

PMTN painting Eldar (second army)
sanctusmortis painting Tau
sir.spamalot painting ????
G.Hawke painting Blood Pact

thesails seemingly changed his mind but I'll send a PM anyway.

I'm going to set the 17th as a guideline for new entries, but if anyone wants to sign up after that, it will be on the understanding that they can post their 200 points (or so) for August. So, even if you sign up on the 29th of August, you can't play a Joker that month. Seem fair?

Harry: I truly believe you have a dozen slaves in your cellar who do all your painting for you. Those marines look great, and the cork bases work really well (may have to steal that for my nids. ;)).

G.Hawke: I'm so glad you joined. :D That model is amazing!

EDIT: By the by, Harry, I calculate that Marine squad to be 196 points: Ten tactical marines, with a missile launcher and a flamer, plus frag and krak grenades.

We now have nearly 4500 points of models posted for this month. :)

OK, Mc.mullet, can you answer my question that I have asked a couple of times? It seems to have gotten lost amid harry's posts...

so my question is this:I have already painted 200 or more points a couple days before I inquired about this project, can I submiat them for the first month?

(currently my time is 11:04 AM monday August 6th if that helps)

so do I need to post a joker for the first month or can I show the 200 points of models I painted?

thanks in advance(I just realized that I should of said this via the PM I sent to you, having all my questions in one area..)

@Spammy
You are laughing.

You have painted up 400-600 points. You post the first 200 points NOW in the July thread thats is already open.
You have already painted this months (Augusts) 200 points as well. But You wait until the end of this month to post those.
If you carry on painting quietly this month you will get finished the next months painting carry on like that and you will always be ahead of yourself and not under any presure to get stuff done.

Your three day marathon painting session has put yoiu in a great position.

Some WIP of what I am working on currently, this month as I said earlier is going to be a light month due to the fact that my Malcador took up a whopping 324 points, leaving only 76 points if I wanted to stick around 200 points a month. With that in mind, I am doing a single infantry squad with Plasma/Heavy bolter which comes out to 80 points, I am using figures that I got off of ebay, Steel legion, I am not stripping them before hand as the guys paint wasn't thick (he had a tan jacket on them with grey everything else, I am doing grey coat, with leather on boots, gloves and gas masks, and planning on red helmets, the thing I am unsure on however is what I am going to do with the pants that you can see for a tiny bit of space between the bottom of the coat and the top of the boots, Thinking of doing red, but I don't really like red pants, maybe fortress grey, or something else. open to suggestions as of now, leather is just basecoated, coats are codex grey with just a black magic sauce wash on them, bases are codex/drybrushed fortress. I'm hoping the leather and the red will be enough to make them separate from the bases since before I did the leather their camo looked near perfect.

well i finally updated my july stuff, i hate waiting for my camera to charge.

OK! Submissions for July are now closed. Here is the summary of what's been done.

First up are the 25 painters who did exactly what they were supposed to - paint around 200 points and post pictures and a breakdown thereof.

There are 3 painters after that who I've listed separately. Two who didn't tell me how many points they've done, and one who said he was trying to get something done but possibly didn't have time (and forgot to play a Joker). If you guys could let me know what's going on I'll put you in the right list.

The next chunk are those 17 of you who posted to play a joker. We all look forward to seeing your work next month. :)

Finally, the list of SHAME. The 26 posters from whom nothing has (as far as I can tell) been heard. Booooooo!

Thanks to everyone who contributed in July, your work is most appreciated. Excellent painting from all you. Group hug!

Total points for July: Around 6300
Total Jokers (voluntary and involuntary): 44

EDIT: I put G.Hawke in the wrong list. That's now corrected.
EDIT2: I put DarkstarSabre's SoB in the wrong list. Now corrected. And he's painted some CSM as well.

I'm glad not to have Jokered last month - and as soon as my Vanquisher arrives this month I can get that painted, a whopping 322 points to be done this month (Command Tank), which should be fun.

I do have 6 Tank Accessory Sprues though, which will come in handy possibly at some point... But I still need some bits to build the tanks, and trades or donations would be nice :P, I need One Heavy Stubber (from the Tank Sprues) and 12 Heavy Bolters, 2 Lascannons from the IG Heavy Weapon Sprues, also a single SM Multi Melta.

All looks Good

It is a real shame there are so many 'no shows'. (after all the enthusiasm on the initial thread).

I think I have shown that you can get three colours on 200 points and get them based in just a few hours painting spread over weekend. I know everyone is not as fast as I am but.....

Oh well. The youth of today. No motivation, no commitment. :D

On the plus side there were as many painters who posted as didn't show up and very nearly two thirds of the original starters still in it even though they might have had to joker the first month.

Well done to all of you who did 'get it done' for month one. A wonderful standard of work overall and some outstanding contributions from some painters. I can't wait to see what you all come up with next month. It is going to be very exciting watching these armies unfold over the coming months.

I agree on both of these points - First off I painted my contribution in a few hours every evening whilst watching TV, and I think it's the best tank I've ever painted.

And secondly its going to be great watching this come together with everyone, as a community project will be great, especially with all the additional things that are being done around it - Warlords and so on.

I am trying to organize a game or meeting around September time for all the local contributors in my area (there are about 4/5 I think), so if you are an East Sussex contributor please contact me, and once we have 600-700 point armies we will start to play some games, do some painting and so on, possibly creating battle reports etc. With any luck possibly gamers in other areas might to a similar thing.

This Project is probably the best thing I have seen on Warseer.

He looks good! cant wait to see your scouts as well. I am finishing up the final touches on what I was gonna have for last month but ended up jokering since I didn't spend the time to get them done. and my IG is all base coated, now its down to highlights and all that to finish them up as well, so I am getting close. I might if I finish up in time start doing base colors on the next batch of each for next month, been assembling chaos guys like mad lately and I frankly have no idea how many I have all said and done, but I may not be doing red corsairs in totality for my army after seeing a peek at the new codex, I am probably going to go a multi force with quite a few cults represented.

Oi! Damn near forgot about this, it's been so long since I finished last month's 200 points of IG :p

Thoth62
10-08-2007, 22:35
Alright, so I've finally decided what my contribution for this month is going to be. Scout squad, 5 scouts with sniper rifles, and a Land speeder tornado. Total comes to 175 points, which leaves me in good shape to do an assault squad for September or October, depending on what the Chaos army box does to my ambition to paint SM's instead of CSM's. WiP shots to follow.

Morning all.

Life in my own quiet little corner of the Eye of Terror has been a lot of fun recently. Aside from a commission job, i've managed to get the bulk of august's 200pts finished, but seeing as its only BP/CCW armed CSM I wont bore you all with them until the end of the month.

What I will show you though, is the fun stuff, being meltaguns and a power fist armed champion. All currently WIP.

Hey all,

Well after my shameful first month joker (that I knew was going to happen before I started) I am well on track for month 2, in fact I think I am going to end up posting more than 200 points just to be on the safe side, and by the safe side I mean on McMullets good side.

So far this month I have almost got the base layers done on my first IG tank which you can see in my project log with more pictures or for the more lazy of you here is an overall pic of the beast:

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s298/spikedog_woof/Warhammer/Armoured%20Company/weathering.jpg

To do is obviously the turret and hull weapon as well as the details and a bit more weathering. After that I'm going to get another tank done but I'm not sure which one yet, either an Exterminator Russ, Vanquisher Russ or a Hellhound. Anyone have any preferences?

@ heldane - Liking that Techmarine, unsual colour scheme with the green but that makes it all that much better!

Quick text update and a question

firstly, the update.....................

so far, so good, the painting on the body is coming on pretty well, just needing to perfect the recipe on the metal parts (I'm trying to decide on Silver or Gold) and I should be good to go for August

next the question,

regarding the best way for a secure hold for the staff of light head, would it be better to glue it inplace with the aid of some accelerator stuff to speed to process along or should I pin it in place (Pinning will delay somewhat as I'll need my dad to help me with it)

Cheers

I have built based and undercoated six terminatirs and started to paint them only to be told I have put them on the wrong size of base. The termies i have used are the last lot, not the current ones. They came with normal round bases not 40mm ones.

Heres my question. Are Terminators supposed to be on the bigger bases to be 'legal'. Do I have to swap them over?

Boy, it's a good thing I posted my July update a few hours before I got banned for a week, or I'd be force-jokered :o

Arhalien
14-08-2007, 09:23
@Harry; I think the rules are they have to be on bases no small than those that they came with. I'll have a quick flick through the rulebook to check but I think that you should be ok with that.

edit: Nice and easy to find:
"Games Wokrshop miniatures are usually supplied with a base and this should be viewed as the minimum size base they can be mounted on"
So as those old termis came with 25mm bases you should be fine using them :)

Hi everyone, Just read about this initiative a couple of days ago. (I've been on holiday for a couple of weeks) and I would like to join in with Eldar. I just started this army and have yet to paint a single miniature, so this will be a great way to get this army done.

McMullet when will be the deadline for the update and where can I find that thread.

It's a contentious point, it seems, but most people aren't going to care. I'd say terminators take some big disadvantages from small bases anyway (feel like Deep Striking near some heavy plasma guns? )

Now, you see, have no idea what you just said there. No idea at all.
Are you saying my Termies are better off for gaming on the bigger bases so I should change them over even if I don't HAVE to?

sigur
14-08-2007, 14:36
Well, you're on the safe side with changing to big bases. Within the next few years (the next bigger SM release to be precise), all Terminator-armoured miniatures will be mounted on big bases.

Wowzers to you Harry for doing so much stuff at the same time.

Well, if you have Terminators on small bases, they are more vulnerable to nasty nasty blast weapons. The advantage of small bases is getting more models into close combat, but when Terminators are normally found in squads of 5 that's not an issue. Though I may be wrong, I'm not a 40K Tactics expert (http://samroberts.fotopic.net/p38551647.html).

More importantly, with big bases you can do pretty scenic stuff. ;)

Hello everybody, I'm jumping in with an Eldar army I just started. :]

I've just recently taken up interest for the hobby again and did because of this visit my local Games Workshop store. When heading there I thought that the new Chaos codex had already been released, which I upon arrival found out to not be the case, so instead I just flickered through some different armies codex for fun and realised that I digged both the fluff and model range's for the two armies Tau and Eldar (which I've never cared about before), so I went home from GW two codex richer. I then went through both of them and realised that Eldar was the way more interesting one of them, so I wen't in a couple of days later to get a box of guardians to start testing out potential colour scheme on.

I am at the moment a bit frustrated since I haven't come up with a good colour scheme for my army yet. Here's a couple of pics of a little scheme i tried this morning (but quickly dropped since I thought it sucked);

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w286/Unquestionable_f/Eldartestshoulder.jpg

It was supposed to be a combo of black and this brownish shade, and with details like gems, eyes and the like in cold blue shades.

And since it's hard to see the base of the mini when it's completly primed black, here's a couple of pics of what the base looks like;

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w286/Unquestionable_f/Eldarbasetest.jpg

I will probably base the rest of the army in a similar fashion.

Now I shall return to ripping my hair off in frustration over that I can't find a suitable colour scheme for this upcoming army. :cries:

Oh, and btw, sweet looking scouts McMullet.

EDIT: Now that I think about it maybe that colour combination mentioned above isn't that bad... Damnit, I just painted the coloured parts of the mini black again...

Guess I'll just have to repaint the darn thing.

I actually finished GSing the Warrior claws last night. I'm not ecstatic with the results but they'll do for a first attempt.

I then thought, "Wow, half way through the month and I haven't even done the bases for those hormies, let alone started painting anything!" and promptly reposed two hormagaunts (I lost one of their feet. :cries: ).

I have hacked my Termies off there small bases and re-based them on bigger bases. Two steps forward, one step back.
They do look a bit better with a bit more space around them on the bigger bases so worth doing I think. Three thin coats of Bubonic Brown done. Linning in next...wish me luck.

I just finished cleaning my Forgeworld demolisher turret (How I hate that blasted release agent!) but the fun doesn't end there, once its painted I get to glue on the tracks. . .yay me. . .I can see my "Highs and Lows" section being rather full of rants this month.

Now I'm off to spray the tank and commissar.

I am currently in the primed/base coating etc. phase of my Command HQ for the The 75th Logres Prime Ice Drakes... I am torn though, I have a white/light grey/ enchanted blue armor look going, and I tried to paint the sash on my commander Orange, but I am not crazy about it.

I was thinking maybe a deep magenta or purple, something royal looking?

I will post pics later tonight... Let me know what you guys think.

Right, think it's time for a little update.

Finished my test model yesterday, and this is the scheme I will be using for my army;

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w286/Unquestionable_f/Eldarscheme.jpg

Will try to assemble, base and prime the rest of the guardian squad later tonight while I'm watching some random movie. It's weird, when I'm tired I often work better then when I'm really pumped, I think my brain goes into some form of stasis and can't think about much else then what I'm doing at the moment which makes stuff as calculating math problems or cleaning warhammer bits alot easier.

I look forward to seeing them DarkstarSabre.

mirakel_jocke, I would have to agree that the highlights look a little bit too thick for my tastes. Not to say that I can do any better. I do like the colour selection, very nice and unique, and if you made your highlights a little thinner, it would look absolutely fantastic.

I should have updates by this weekend as well.

Sure thing, I'll try to make the highlights a bit thinner and a bit less blocky on the rest of the army.

This was the first mini I've painted for a long time though, so I was a bit more shaky on the hand then usual.

Nice lookin Eldar there mirakel_jocke. Have to agree with everyone else though about the highlights. One thing you might want to try is instead of doing just one highlight do two. The first one roughly as thick as the ones you have done now but in a darker colour and then another highlight of the same colour you have used now but only on the very edge of the armour plates. Maybe give it a try and see what you think. Will take longer so I guess it depends how long you want to spend on each model. Just a thought. Like the colours though, very different from the run of the mill Eldar.
Keep it up. :)

Hey, no issues. My hands are notoriously shaky to the point where I sometimes have to just put down whatever I'm working on.

A little bit of practice and you can make a lot of progress. As a sterling example, you should take a look through Hiveminion's project log. The difference between the stuff at the beginning and the stuff he's doing now is like night and day.

for the last month or so I have been debating on if I really want to do a chaos army for my 2nd list and I just can't get in the 'mood' to paint them to be honest, I have my chaos figs for this month already done, but I am seriously thinking of changing to an as of yet unnamed marine chapter which currently is following the dark angels codex, but is painted a bit differently, its what I am planning on first doing for apocalypse when that comes out, so I am working on a force that is not going to be murder to paint and so far, these guys seem easy. I will give a final answer in a day or so once I chew on this idea some more, but I probably will be changing my red corsairs to space marines

Mirakel: That Eldar looks great, I really like the scheme. I'm sure the highlights will be far less stark when the mini is at arm's length. ;)

Razormasticator: Nice work. I think the orange sash is OK, but personally I would tone it down a bit (maybe with a deep red or brown wash). It clashes a bit too much at the moment.

Razormasticator, what mcmullet said sounds good, tone it down a bit with a brown wash, and your blues look very shiny but that should fix itself up when you seal them with matte sealer.

I'm gonna swap my chaos army to marines, I have no real concept currently of where I want to go with my chaos army as of yet, until I get a good read of the new codex at least.

As for the marines, I am not exactly sure what the name for them will be, I'm kind of leaning towards Mortis Guard, or something with either Crow or Ravens in it. The concept is an offshoot branch of the dark angels, they aren't clued into the secret, but do follow the army composition of them, they use much of the same symbols, but also when a member is raised to scout status, they have their faces tattooed to be a skull. The helmets also have the same painted on them, armor color is silver with black kneepads and shoulder insets, with red highlights elsewhere, I banged together some test minis yesterday, and once the sun comes up, I should be able to snap some photos of the assault squad I started on yesterday, still needs some cleanup but they are getting there.

Yeah, the blue is a bit shiny because I just ink washed it. It will tone down with the highlights and shadows.

Ok, well, here is the concept I have so far, I haven't done any real shading at all at this point, so everything is still flat color, this is what I accomplished on my new space marines (primed them yesterday and had a bit of a primer mishap but some scrubbing with a toothbrush got rid of most of the dust)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v475/norsehawk/IMG_0647.jpg

Still up in the air as far as a name for these guys, Kind of leading towards Mortis Guard, quick backstory bit, they follow dark angels ruleset (mostly, but could also easily be a codex of blood angels successor depending on how I want to play the list at the time) and have markings that are very similar to dark angels, but no official record of their creation and who they are descended from can be found.

When raised to scout, they have a skull tattoo applied that covers the face to the top lip. Potentially I am thinking of doing allied imperial guardsmen which would represent applicants who wish to join the chapter, starting with conscript squads, a few more advanced guardsmen would be ones in the second phase of culling, and the ones who are still alive and make the cut become full fledged scouts. The geneseed would be installed later in life than is standard for other chapters, and I am thinking of applying a bit of fluff from the doom eagles where when they become full marines they join the ranks of the Dead.

The best bit is, these guys are fairly easy to paint so I can do squads pretty fast

@razormasticator - I have to agree with the others, the blue and orange clash so I would dumb them down a pit with inks, and if you can be bothered build up layers of regal blue with skull white mix (which I wouldn't be with guardsmen, considering there are so many of 'em). Still they look good, just get a basing done on them and they will look sweet.

@Thoth62 - Awesome stuff, the scouts look great. I really like the heavy bolter on the land speader (the finished one), dry brush and highlight over black but looks great.

@Norsehawk - They remind me of lost and the dammed. Great colour choice though, a muted metallic. Looks great, especially in contrast with the red/white and the metallics on the sword. Very clean, and a great fluff. Inspires me to make my own chapter of marines.

@Daredhnu - Finally another Necron painter. We have to show them that necron models are a work of art. Not "boring models", what is you paint scheme going to be? I would really love to see an entire army of ceramic style crons.

Anyway I am back and thankfully I got into my Uni with AAA at A-levels, yes I screwed the system.

So now and I have 2 weeks to get 200 points (or do I have to do 400?) for 40k and 200 for the fantasy, thankfully I am already about 400 points ahead with my Necrons with all my painting during my holidays.

So here is my WIP for eldar and Necrons. Anybody who has checked out my log would have seen my 200 points for this month but this is probably the best model i have painted ever, so i like to show it off. Oh and this is the first real model for my eldar army, a farseer called Rikin.

Hey all.

Well, me and some friends decided yesterday that we're gonna be entering a WFB tourney in october, so I've found out that my painting time has to be given over to WFB, Bretonnians no less.

So, I've spent this afternoon building the bits I need to bring my marines up to a half company. So far thats 3 missile launcher marines, 3 demi squad sgts, 3 plasma gun marines and 6 normal marines. Still to do is 10 assault marines and then the turrets/cupolas for 4 rhino/razorbacks (i intend to be able to use each rhino as either).

That should be the models for my painting built for the next 4 months.

And I will be buying the Imperial Infantry company, which will be cool. I am literally seeing how many heavy weapons I can cram into this army, haha. Should be fun. This army will be 3k, and I'll use the rest of the guard from the infantry company to make a Blood Pact Army, should be fun. cheers.

UPDATE! WITH PICTURES!

That's right friend(s), I finished (<-- that term is used loosely) something! Of course as soon as I loaded the pictures up, I realized that it wasn't really finished, so I'll go back and touch it up. Of course my lazy ass is sitting here, so I might as well load up the pictures to let you see what I'm talking about.

This is the second Land Speeder for this army. It is also the last. For any army. I absolutely hated putting these things together. If I didn't know any better, I'd call myself a masochist for still wanting to do a second, after the disaster that was the first. But I digress...

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa234/Thoth62/Brotherhood%20of%20Iron%20-%20Space%20Marines/IMG_2044.jpg

I see most of the mistakes I've made (and they are many), but comments are still welcome.

Update for my alpha legion.

Cultist champion/icon bearer:

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z24/th_frgt10/cultist-icon.jpg

the plan is when the new codex invalidates cultists, he will become a standard icon bearer in a marine squad, with the rest of the cultits being use as lesser demons.

Brief update on what I'm up to, space marine assault squad (5) is about 90-95% done, I just did the gouache on them and it is now drying once that is complete, erasing the gouache I don't want and then final touchups and that side is done, as far as my guard, they are probably about 80% done, need to do the goggles, highlights on the guns and helmets, aquillas and final touchups and they are done as well. School just started up again, but I don't see any problems as of now. No Pictures right now, but should have no problems getting everyone done.

Well almost managed to finish building the assualt marines last night. I've decided that teh jump packs are a pain to build and required GS'ing, so they'll ot be done till tonight now :S

There's been some really nice stuff being posted in the last few days. Very impresive.

Seeing as I cant find my camera you've all been spared from the strange pictures of me cradling my chaos army box like a protective mother. Im so glad I was off sick today.

On the painting side, everything except a champion is finished. I'll bring you some wip pics of the champ when I can find my camera.

Last question, what would you guys rather see next month, a sorcerer and a couple of spawn or Abaddon?

Thoth62
23-08-2007, 15:24
I definitely cast my vote for Sorceror & spawn. I'd love to see what you can do with those.

El-Diablo
23-08-2007, 15:33
So thats one vote for the sorcerer so far, i'll do a rough count of anyone that cares to add a preference and whichever gets the most votes by midnight GMT tonight gets done.

Im both looking forward to and dreading doing the sorcerer. Im planning on using as many plastic parts as possible, using one of the plasitc DA vets as a base, with some serious hacking and GS.

The spawn will probabaly be straight from the box, theres just so many cool parts that they dont really need extensive conversion.

Abaddon will be pretty easy to do, essentially im going to be throwing the plastic termy lord and the abby fig in a box with some glue and shaking it up. Finally, I get a nice posey Abaddon instead of the cack we've got now.

Just to despoil Thoths party I vote Abaddon.....:D lol... see what I did there....despoil the party :eyebrows:

Guess you had to be there huh :D

Thoth62

Skidrow, that was possibly one of the worst jokes I've heard all week. And that's saying something. I saw Superbad on Monday...

Hey
I know they're not on your list, but I vote for termies El-Diablo ;)

If Abaddon gets done next termies wil be after, if sorcerer gets done next it'll be possessed or a dread after.

Only 4 hours until judgement day.....

What can I put you down for Heldane, Abby or sorcerer?

heldane
23-08-2007, 20:26
Well if it means termies quicker then I'll vote abby.

Is it a stock model, or do you plan to convert it from the plastic termy lord?

Dan

It'll be using the plastic lord, with Abby used for details (sword, claw, head etc.)

Looks like Abby's in the lead 2 to 1.....

They never tell you how big the actual turret of the vanquisher is, and when looked at alone, it looks pretty normal - but it's probably twice the volume of the regular Russ turret.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y132/Will_C2005/Tank%20Company/DSCF0282.jpg

Final note - I am so repainted the hull with another coat of Catachan Green when I get some - it looks terrible, not proud of how it looks at all - must try harder.

Thoth62
23-08-2007, 22:18
What did you use for the main gun on that Vanquisher?

heldane

Thats the forgeworld version I believe ;)

Dan

Thoth62
23-08-2007, 22:56
Really? Not that I've ever seen one in the flesh, but it seems odd to me that the barrel wouldn't be hollow at all. Then again, it is resin...

Lostanddamned
23-08-2007, 23:12
That is the Stygies pattern vanquisher - and it's not hollow because I'm pretty sure it would break.

Thoth62
23-08-2007, 23:37
So, if you don't mind me asking, why did you paint the interior of the barrel metal then? Would it not have been better to do it black?

@El Diablo, my vote goes to the sorcerer and his spawn, leave the Despoiler until the end (keeps everyone on the edge of their seats)

Norsehawk
24-08-2007, 02:16
Since I will be at 196 points next month for my IG I am thinking of what I want to work on that will take up some points, I'm leaning towards the forgeworld vanquisher or doing a demolisher for next month.

As far as my marines are going, I'm only gonna be coming in around 160 points, so gonna do something a bit bigger, starting at a tactical squad and see where it goes from there.

Lostanddamned
24-08-2007, 11:48
Vanquishers are fun, and the cheaper option of the two as well (£30 for a demolisher, £28 for the Vanquisher... ouch)

Next month I'm doing an exterminator :D that should be fun, I'm going for the FW version as it works out slightly cheaper (again!) than the Games Workshop archive option - which requires a £3 pair of autocannons, and a £2.50 Heavy Bolter.

I will try to get the 25 Sisters done.
And then start on the Chaos Marines. Worked out a different way of painting the purple- i.e. from black rather than that ink/extreme highlight method with the warlock...

I've started working on a jump pack chaplain, but I'm going on holiday to France on Sunday, and I wont be back until the 4th September. So I wont finish him in time. :cries:

over the course of sunday & monday I'll be working on the following

just over the 200 points mark (201) but since this lord conversion is going slower than I thought (I'm going to have to get my dad to help me pin it in place)

I have found all the work posted by everyone to be great, I will still be checking in to see what fabulous work everyone is doing but at the moment I am just going to concentrating on a project that I started a couple of months ago and really need to finish ... Space Crusade revisited. Sorry McMullet and Harry, if this thing does run next year I will hopefully be able to participate fully then.

I believe this month I will have to play a joker, unless I can get enough oomph to finish up my Rune Priest. This month has been hectic enough, without having to worry about getting another 200pts. painted.

Unless writing that article for Warlords counts XD.

Edit: Nevermind. Sudden spree of painting resulted in an all-finished Rune Priest. I just noticed that his axe hand's kind of kiggly, though. I'm considering yoinking it out, making a series of hands, and call it modular XD.

To post pictures, you need to make sure you copy the correct IMG tag code from photobucket. It looks like you've copied an image URL and put tags around it here, whereas photobucket has this handy feature which just copies the complete code, with the correct image address. If you use the wrong image address is may not allow direct linking. Thus:

Wow! That's some good indecision! :D

Just to give everyone an update on Warlords: I have received a selection of articles for this issue and I'm in the process of proof reading and editing them. However, what with painting and work it's taking longer than I'd hoped so I expect it will be a week at the least before I can send them to Rich 123 to be put together.

Those of you who have contributed this month, rest assured that things are moving along, albeit slowly. ;)
