Was on the search for:
1.) good looking aircraft
2.) that were near 28mm
3.) resemble the vulture or other Imperial Navy aircraft

just found a great new find for all of us Imperial players that desperately want aircraft but don't wish to fork over $100+ for 1 stinking aircraft!

GI Joe Dragonhawk! probably 100x cooler looking and its a good size. All you need to do is green stuff the cockpit and you got yourself a $25-$30 aircraft you can get 3 and its only $90 tops!

here's a link but I'm sure you can find cheaper off ebay and such: http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=HJ62167

If anyone can find other great looking aircraft post it here! I'm looking for a bomber and a fighter!

I have a contender for this one.
Ladies and gentleman allow me to introduce the AM-9A2 gunship.

Better yet 20 Aussie dollars so with the american dollar it's even more reasonable.
A bit of placticard to lengthen the superstructure and you havea troop carrier.
Not a bad option.

Edit, heres a drop ship for you as well.

Excellent find! I always take a look in the toy area when I go to the store for potential bits/conversions but I hadn't seen that.

Errr, its way too big. It's well over a foot long, and about a foot wide, and it's A LOT bigger than 25mm scale. The cockpit is meant for 2.5" figures, and likewise the rest of the thing is designed around those dimentions. Now, a 40k scale infantrymen is about... 1" tall....

Oh, and check amazon.com, its cheaper.

So you paint the canopy of the cockpit some color and redo the weapons and cargo bit. I'm thinking of picking up three or so of these for conversion to dropships.

I'm sorry, all of those models linked look atrocious and cheesy(with the exception of the first link). Makes me really appreciate the FW stuff.

They used to sell the dropship from aliens as a quality 1/72 scale model, i know thats a small scale but the thing is huge, considering the big marine apc drives out of the smallish backramp, and the apc is huge

Itd take some conversion, and hunting for the kit, but i got mine for under
$40us, and its more than big enough (chassis itself is slightly larger than the FW aircraft.)

But that still doesn't solve the problem that it is way too big to represent a vulture or valkyrie, and the fact that the cockpit is still way too big. All what you've done is stick different weapons out there, and paint the cockpit "some color."

Agreed to a point, however not everyone can afford a single Valkyerie say, let alone enough for a Guard Drop Army. However you could equip a whole Guard army for the price of one Valk with say the one from Wargames Workshop, and with a little detailing its not that bad a model by the looks of it, sure not as nice as FW but considerably more affordable.

I think he meant blackening the windows so you can't see in. Also I proposed earlier that you use green stuff and make your own cockpit which would fit a 28mm model (or two).

As for the other ships besides the fist link, yes they lack detail but are vastly cheaper than FW. Also I am currently looking at GI Joe and other toys (perhaps Japanese companies) for a bomber and a valkyrie/vulture. I don't know which the 1st link (the GI Joe Dragonhawk) represents more! (vulture or valkyrie!) but if I were to find a good looking bomber and another dropshipish aircraft hell you just got away from wasting 100's of dollars! and frankly the 1st model whoops FW's pants off even if the model is bigger (I'm American! BIGGER = BETTER!) :D

For a Dropship this might be better IMHO, the problem would be finding one ;)

yeah they sell for $50 or more, it's crazy, good looking toy and if they were $20 like the GI Joe toy i'd load up on those too!

Found a GI Joe fighter apparently "Sigma 6" is the 'new' story arc for GI Joe (learn something new everyday!)

http://www.hasbro.com/gijoe/default.cfm?page=Products/Detail&product_id=18335

Are they seriously still fighting Cobra? I mean he was cool and all but seriously if you can't catch a guy after 25 years I think you need to rework you plan of attack!

The fighter doesn't look anything like the vulture or valkyrie but looks nice and is only 10$ (probably cheaper elsewhere) and it does fill the role of thunderbolts or such!

found another cool lookin aircraft :D

http://www.hasbro.com/default.cfm?page=browse&product_id=16548

that could pass as a bomber :D

Fighting COBRA is part of the war on terror.

Besides, HASBRO is a great company. ;)

I have that first link - the Sigma 6 Dragonhawk.

It's bloody huge. Let me put it this way. I'm thinking about using it as my stand in for a Thunderhawk Transporter. You can EASILY park a Land Raider under the body between the legs.

Myself, to build a Vulture "Stand in" - I purchased a 1/48 scaled Hokum attack helicopter, removed the rotors and made Valkyrie like wings out of thick plasticard.

I've been trying to figure out a way to use the dragonhawk I bought for something for AGES.I'ts just sitting there in my room. Hell cool, but not super useful.

Now, the other sigma six toys- namely the two battle suits. http://www.hasbro.com/default.cfm?page=browse&product_id=17731
http://www.hasbro.com/default.cfm?page=ps_results&product_id=18176

those are cool. I use the first as a light titan, I'll take a quick picture and post it in a few. The second link, I'm buying soon, two of them actually. One to use almost as is, one to tear the arms off for a scratch build Warhound I'm working on. (inspired by the german GD titan pic, here: http://www.pendragonstudios.be/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=14&pos=52)

So, if I can do something with the second, and armless, suit, I should have three scout/light titans and a warhound for apocalypse. I'm on track!

I've also got an apache AH-64 converted to a fighter, and a failed attempt at the same with a CV-22 Osprey...gonna pick up that gunship, I can do something with it.

Converting Chaos is so fun and you can use anything...

in order:
1. Size compare between Marine and first mech linked above.
2. Size compare, Dragonhawk cockpit, Marine
3. Size compare, Marine, Dragonhawk. Note the Russ underneath.
4. Mech
5. Mech

Mech ain't painted, but it will be. Forgive my poor GS skills. Kinda inspired by this thread to actually do something with that D-Hawk...maybe a titan Transport...

I think I'm going to pick up 3 Dragonhawks and turn them into Tau Orca's. My head is buzzin' with ideas.

oh wow i dumb. literally, first time ever taking photos of minis or using imageshack. lemme fix that...

I'm trying to figure out a way to make it so 40k figures would fit in the cockpit...wouldnt be much room, but at least the thing could function as a transport. plus, it has lights. and sound. might want to glue the turbines down though, as they rotate back and forth and come off very easy.

As a former model airplane guy: 1:48 is the scale you want. Ork planes are basically Mig-15 and 17s with armor plating...

For other armies I'd look at some of the more experimental (ie weird) German planes, like the Fw 189 and Bv 141. Since they're not popular planes you'll only find models done by small obscure companies that don't make easy models to build, but that won't matter.

Unfortunately, tanks and vehicles usually come in 1:72 (way small) or 1:35 (too big, but the heads and weapons are closer).

Well in my case(turning it into an Orca) all's I got to do is cut off the cockpit pieces with me dremel(and those ridiculous missile launchers...) and put a bulked up Devilfish chassis in its place...

Dragonhawk's pretty cool. and that aurora thing...WOW. I want one. I love using other toys for GW. done right it's awesome, and done wrong- well, at least ytou got a hella-cool stand-in for whatever it is supposed to be.
