You know, space exploration, trading stuff between planets and solar systems, building of an intergalactic empire, that sort of thing.
I'm looking into a few possibilities (amongst others: X3-Reunion (http://www.x3-reunion.com/news/current_en.php)), but I wanna know from people who have actually been playing this type of game over the last few years.

Thanks in advance.

Some people swear by Freelancer (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/freelancer/review.html). Personally I was a bit disappointed; it seemed to be a shoot 'em up aspiring towards something it couldn't quite reach. But it was great fun while it lasted, and some people seem to really get into it. It might be the sort of thing you're after.

Freelancer is fairly good and has a lot of support from the mod comunity, my personal fav space game has to be eve online.. but it costs and is very very complex...

Yeah, freelancer promised a lot but never quite got it. I think the genre is still there for the taking.. nothing I've played since Elite has been as open and as deep (although I've never played Eve....)

Well, I've been looking at EVE-Online (http://www.eve-online.com/) and it certainly looks and sounds great. I'm not sure I want to take the MMORPG approach, but I've changed my mind before...

Eve online is massive and most enjoyable but i found i got bored with it simply because there is so much to do, i got sidetracked and had no direction ended up mining for my corp which was nice.

I still have my copy and one day i shall return.....

Yeah, having no direction would have me end up being a miner as well, I think. ;)

Somehow, I tend to play games very cautiously. Dunno why.

this is why im currently playing guild wars as it has a more structured quest line for the casual gamer and no fees, unfortunatly im currently being drawn to WoW which i can see ending horribly...

Ogame (http://ogame.org/) seems to fit the bill in that case. It's more of a text/link-based game but has some very nice renders on the default skin (which you can change, but some of them are a bit naff...)

Although I've only played a demo (pick it up from the coverdisc of PC Powerplay is your in Australia) - there's a new game either out, or soon to be released, called Evochron . Although I've never played Elite or any of the other titles in this thread, I got a feeling from the demo that it is a huge game, where you can do whatever the hell you want - including trading, buying system sectors, bribing mercenaries - it seemed well put together too. Check it out.

I've got that disc, but haven't played the demo yet.

Can't wait to get home. I even bought a new joystick today for X-Wing vs TIE Fighter. Much gaming goodness for me.

Yeah - I bought the mag for the sole fact that it had the Battlefield 2 demo on the front - but my hunk of steaming grox dung of a computer won't even run that...

Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos is pretty good. The trading is overly simplistic and was very disappointing for me, but the combat mechanics are awesome.

if all else fails, Elite 4 (http://www.frontier.co.uk/games/elite4/) may prove your salvation.

Edit: If it ever gets made that is...

LOL! Looking at the date at the bottom of the page this seems extremely unlikely!
