I am going to start a new army but i cant decide what I want.
It will most likey be a chaos space marine army or a space marine army.

I know that the choas are getting a new codex setpemberish but i would like to decide now. If i chose a choas army it would be Slaanesh.
And if i chose a space marine army it would be the Salamanders. But the Space Wolves do look quite good.

What are the pros and cons of all of the armies above.
Thank you for you help

Slannesh has some nifty special weapons and such, im working on death guard now, but kind of regret not doing 1k aona... ap3 bolters... thats just sick.

For marines whatever you collect dont make the mistake i made, so get lots of tactical marines!

what army(s) do you have?

The cult armies seem like they're going to be getting nerfed some come the new codex, so if you wanted to do that, you'd be best off to wait.

For marines, well, they're about the most customizable army in the game, even without getting into the specialist codexes.

If you play Salamanders you're looking at an army that's heavy on short range combat (Meltas & Flamers, for example) and next to no access to bikes or land speeders. You're going to have a very static force.

Space Wolves have similar shooting profile, but are better able to back it up in close combat. And you get full access to fast attack choices, though you have a serious limit on Terminators.

i played space wovles for a couple of years, and they are pretty good. but i didn't like the blood claws being slightly weaker than a marine. their bs and ws and s were all 3. so they get more attacks, but they are weaker.... just need to know what you're working with.... they're cool and they can be good... but myself, i moved to the black templar.... i'm a big cc nut/short range guy

I'm just back from my hols, and as my GW staff mate has said...
"Obviously Squinty's been on hols - too much sun, beer and new army ideas..."
'Tis true though..
Too much time sitting around thinking leads to new army ideas.

My latest *Guess what trilogy I read this week..* is a Luna Wolves army.
Obviously pre-heresy, with Torgaddon as company captain, and if I have enough points to fit them in, Abaddon and a squad of Termies.
*Probably use Chaplain rules for Abbadon - in termie armour*

Only problem is, now I'm back - I find I cant get all my ideas into 1500 pts.
Boooooo.....
:)

Also, Abbadon didn't wear Termi Armour in the Horus Heresy books, there one passage were Lokken jokes to him about it, saying that he doesn't wear Terminator Armour because there's none big enough to fit him. :p

Really??
I know I was reading fast, but I don't remember that.
Doesnt he lead the justaerin terminator squad?
How can he do that in power armour?
Just remembered -

SPOILER FOR ANY WHO HAVENT READ BOOK 3!!!!

Doesnt he fight Loken in full Terminator plate? - I remember it saying he was still as skillfull as any marine in power armour...
Or was that just after they 'turned' he started wearing termie armour?

Yeah, I was positive abou the end, anybody clear up if Abaddon had power armour in Horus Rising?

The other plan I had was-

AGAIN BOOK 3 SPOILER!!!!

An Istvaan III loyal defence force..

Some Emperors children
Luna Wolves *they renounced Sons of horus during it*
World Eaters
Death Guard
Torgaddon
Lucius
Sarvitz (sp?)
and the venerable emperors children dreadnaught - cant remember his name

At least I wouldnt get bored painting with that variety.....

I think you're right about the end, but in the first book at least he deffinetly just wears power armour.

{insert spoiler warning, don't read this if... blah blah blah}

Probably shouldn't have Death Guard in there, they were off fighting on their own and never really linked up or made contact with the warriors defending the palace.

And the last we see of that Dreadnought he's standing on a building watching the virus bombs eat everything on the world. While the viruses couldn't get to him, I'd imagine the firestorm did a number there, and the loyalists didn't exactly have a profusion of techmarines and spare parts.

ANOTHER BOOK 3 SPOILER... SORRY

Yeah, but if I was to make a defence force - then an EC dreadnought would be ok - as, as you assume, before the firestorm got him, the virus bombs definatly didnt. please, if I hadnt read the books - this would **** me right off. dont spoil it for others if you dont have definate answers.
No offense meant. But there are some who haven't read it yet....

So they are getting a little nerfed. You can now combine them all as troops insead of elites, and you can take eveything instead of not being allowed some for different marks. The new chaos codex is gonna rock. i would definetly vote for the new chaos.
