View Full Version : More reasons why Apocalypse rocks...

Like many of us, I'm really looking forward to the forthcoming Apocalypse expansion. I have 5000 points of Tyranids as my main army, and they're still breeding; any excuse to use the lot will be appreciated. And 10" templates are just hilariously cool. But I've thought of something else that cements Apocalypse firmly in my mind as the best thing ever to happen to 40K 4th edition: It allows themed armies!

Think about it. Iron Warriors can take plenty of Obliterators, VDR up a Basilisk and use as much heavy support as they want. Alpha Legion can take nothing but Chosen, who can infiltrate, and use allied Guard for cultists until the daemon codex comes out in '08. Iyanden can use as many Wraithlords as they like, and Biel-tan can go without troops entirely if they want (although I for one wouldn't leave home without Dire Avengers, as they rock). I guess Ork klanz won't be in the new codex, judging by GW's insistence on eliminating the specialist lists, but you can go all out on such goodness in Apocalypse games.

It's not just the 'legion' type themes, either, that become suddenly viable with Apocalypse. The Tyranid 'Flying Circus', an army entirely on the wing shot down by the codex's lack of winged troops and having only 3 Fast Attack slots, is now easily possible - as are, in fact, all-wing armies from any other race who can take them: Chaos, loyalists, Eldar, Dark Eldar, even Witch Hunters or Tau all-battlesuit armies. Every army can now field tank companies, or Godzilla armies in the 'nids' case. (Which can deep strike as well :D)

As Apocalypse throws tournament-style game balance out of the window by eliminating Force Organisation charts, you can organise your force exactly how you want it. If you're someone like me who actually designs how a typical detachment of your army is organised, you can implement that fully in Apocalypse. If you want to use a Court of the Young King formed out of 6 converted Phoenix Lords, you can. If you want to take 3 winged Hive Tyrants, you can. If you want to make a massive Ork Drop Rok Fortress, a huge Orky asteroid that opens up and unleashes an army of greenskins as well as its impressive firepower, you can (this is a terrain project I've had an idea for for the future, but hell, if I can VDR it and actually use the thing, why not?!). If your army is supposed to revolve around purging the mutant by application of drop-podded Grey Knight Dreadnoughts in surgically chosen locations while the Adepta Sororitas hold their fronts supported by inducted Guard superheavy tanks, you can probably do that as well...

So, more to the point. How are you going to implement this in your own armies?

Personally, I'm going to use my Swordwind Eldar army with the entire 'Council of Seven' that heads their craftworld of Alariel: 7 independent characters and an Avatar. Four detachments' worth, but not in Apocalypse. I no longer have to buy up loads of cheap Dire Avenger or Ranger units to fill up compulsory Troop selections... :) And I can use as many Aspect Warriors, Wraithguard and Harlequins - all highly cool units - without worrying about running out of Elite slots. Not to mention, Eldar Heavy Support slots are one of the most contested FOC places in the game - not any more. :D I'd love a Revenant, but the chances of me affording one are, well, very little. I've got uni coming up...

My Tyranids don't really have a theme apart from variety and mad conversions, so in Apocalypse I'll use box sets and whatnot as an excuse to throw everything I can reach onto the table whenever I get the chance.

My future Chaos army, complete with allied Orks and 'Dark Sistren' (a coven of secretive, warp-using martial artists who count as Sisters of Battle) will be very themed. I can use all the infantry and walkers I want - no competition in Heavy Support and Elites slots between Chosen/Dreadnoughts and Defilers/Havocs/Obliterators now. Same with the Orks and 'Witch Hunters'. I want to make a demi-titan (or perhaps more than one), called a Desecrator, about 6" tall and with firepower comparable to a Baneblade's. Oh, and did I mention that huge drop rok thing?

No need to VDR it they can just use it. There is no force org and you may have allies so what if you only take a unit of Bassies as your ally with IW's.

Or just go Guard and paint them up as IW. That way there is no need for any finagling!

I am just waiting to see the report of someone using 19 Lash DPs of Slaanesh ;).

I'll do you one better. I'm waiting for someone to come up with a list with both Ghazkull and Yarrik. Or St.Celestine and Abbadon. That would go sooo far past awesome.

19 Lash DPs! LOL

How about 3000 points of deep striking spore mines (1 mine per unit)! Spore mines everywhere! Stupid, but funny. You could get some cool chain reactions going.

Or 1500 points of Inquisitorial Orbital Bombardment? That'd be hilarious as well. I think an army of all Inquistorial Bombardment wins the cheapest Apocalypse army award.

LMAO. All Speed Freeks Prelim Bombardment with any "stratagems" of similar affect. 100 Fighta-bommas! lol.

All Speed Freek Fighta Bommer Raids would be hilarious. Especially if you roll well enough so it hits the entire battlefield, friend and foe alike. Everything on the battlefield is just engulfed in one almighty strafing run. It would suck hard, but it would be funny to see.

And you win for VP's as well, because the game would be over on your opponents turn, and thus no objective capturing. I would have to check if the points spent on Fighta Bomma Raids are counted as destroyed, however...

That will be mean!
I better hope not that the enemy have only deepstriker units. What you gona bomb?

10 Fire prism will be cool. this good for anti tank and big blast AP2 weapon.

Or put Eldrad Ulthran intoo the game and reposition your Titan.

With lots of tanks in the game you can block lot line of sight...I am thinking wrong?

You stole mt grey knights plan!
In just 1500 points you can have 21 lance strikes!
You could on the other hand have 25 regular or 60 point strikes.
Or 18 melta strikes.

yes as most player who have tons of stuff, i look forward to the Apocalypse
expansion. at last those super heavies and titans will get to be used after all those years collecting dust. but it rises to some questioning concerning the fact there is no FOC, do the lack of FOC will give our opponents to sink all their points ( and wallet for that matter ) in a super heavy tank company or even having just titans ?? i hope that our humble foot troops will still be a valuable asset, i read somewhere on warseer about the stratagem concept which sounds great to me. just cant wait to get my hands on that book and have a good reason to get that warhound chaos titan form forgeworld and build a chaos brass scorpion. just have to wait and see, i even bet that apocalypse will get more popular than the main 40k game as we can use every thing !!!!! and for those who still like skirmish battles well city of deaths are available right now..
anyone here can confirm about the VDR would greatly appreciated. Thanks

What size table will all of you be playing these games on? I have a large Eldar force and a Revenant, but I don't use it because there is no space on the table. I can't believe that a 6x4 or 8x4 table will be large enough for these games.

The only thing about Apocalypse I'm not looking forward to is becomming wretchedly poor soon after its' release.

I play on using my balanced Marine, Battle Sister and Inquisition forces. Nothing lame, like 240 Obliterators and nothing else, just a balanced army, which will be fun to play with and against.

"Hey Joe, ready for the Apocalypse game?"

"Sure am!"

"Ummm... where's your army"

(holds up barrage template)

"Right here."

I'm looking forward to rolling for reserves and smugly saying, "here comes my aspect warrior assault force", before deploying 6 waveserpents worth of elites

Appocalypse sized movie marines. Bring 1500 points of my standard marine army all upgraded to movie marines and take on the rest of the store. I just fear strength D!

I'm just really loving the thought of massed Chaos war machines(ie. Defilers, Brass Scorpion, etc.) striding across the battlefield, with swarms of CSM moving around their legs and such.

I'm also kind of interested in the whole "Spawn Swarm" thing, regardless of it's potential effectiveness. It's appearance would more than make up for its' failings...

It's themed armies I'm most happy with in apocalypse, strangly the idea of me goin up against 8 bloodthirsters doesnt seem so appealing...

If you wanted to you could make up your entire army of 1 giant VDR Machine with 9 structure points AV14 all around Immune to lances, Give it 5 Mega Long barrelled Blast D-Cannons and 20 Bright lances. Hmmmm...

My crazy Apocalypse Idea:

45 Land Speeders of varing description. (15 squadronss of 3, or just 45 seperate) :)

Think about it, 45 models that you can only glance. They're small, so you can split them up more and avoid some of the nastier templates being too dangerous. Have both one of the best Anti-Infantry weapons in the game (Assault Cannon) and one of the best anti-vehicle weapons in the game (multi-melta). AND they can deep strike if you really want them too. :)

Might just take a Squadron of Imperial Navy Thunderbolts, it'll be like playing AI but actually seeing what i'm killing during a strafing run, lol

Got 1 40K Thunderbolt, just 11 more to go i guess....

Imperial Navy FTW:)

Nev-man!!!:...but 8 Bloodthirsters would look so incredibly cool! Not that it's something I would be likely to do(I'm not THAT into Daemons...), but yeah, cool regardless.

The more crazy, grand, and horrifying ideas for Apocalypse I come up with, the more I realize just how impactful Apocalypse is going to be...in a very, very good way. I say this because no matter how huge and insane the idea may be, Apocalypse will allow, support, and encourage it...or so it seems at this point anyway.

Well I have a marine company that sits on 5000pts befroe I add all the tanks I'm getting for apoc (4 land raider types, 3 vindicators, maybe another pread......maybe) So to actually use it will be fun, and for bigger games, I also have 3 to 4000pts of nids I can 'ally' with and 1750pts of eldar to add as well, fun times had by all

There is a catachan player at our club who should like this, as hwe doesn't want to use them under the guard codex (more expensive or something) but seeing as points wont really matter.......
The only problem is that in my club there are only afew players with big enough armies, so it will be mostly 1 on 3 type games if we want to play apoc.......(shrugs)

That is so going to rock ^^ my Dark Angels combined with my IG troops. I will buy the Baneblade and the Vindicator box for sure. I guess i can play games about 6k points.
I just imagined our whole gaming club engaged in one huge battle :D.
