hi all
after playing to much dark crusade, and watching my friend (and me) get repidedly slaped about by a necron army, i wondered whether to start them. i already play eldar and guard and like big guns, and shootiness with defensive cc.

thx in advance :)

Well, any arms plays pretty differently than it's DoW counterpart. The question really should be, do you want to play Necrons? Do you think you'll enjoy building the army, and painting the models? Necrons really have nothing in the way of big guns (limited to the Heavy Destroyer and Monolith - everything else is s6 or less), but lots of shootiness.

Hi I play Necrons only :)

In 40K table top games...their not quite as good as the are in the video game..

As far as having "Big Guns" their not that big...but every weapon they have that's a Gauss weapon (staff of light is diffrent) can penetrate on a roll of a 6 (glancing hit) or wound on a 6 (to wound roll) thats nice!

Defensive cc....:eyebrows: yep thats about it defensive....if you count getting knocked down to try and make your WBB role only to be knocked down in future rounds (I1 is not that good for fighting in H to H) of corse you can pull them out of H to H with Veil or Lith and then shoot them some more :D

If you want to start them then go for it....(runs for cover) just don't expect them to be the same as in the video game!

no dont be necrons you'll lose all your friends

That was well thought out and constructive Dybbuk.

To be honest you shouldn't make a significant monetary investment like a 40K army unless you want to play them.

If your attracted to the army then try out a small force (or proxy one with a friend) and see how you like it. If it grabs you, go for it.

Asking complete strangers is not really a wise way to decide how to spend a considerable amount of cash.

If you already play and have had some success with the Eldar, I wouldn't recommend Necrons. They're seen sometimes to be a boring army lacking in variety (and the 'big guns' you mentioned, they have 2), particularly when contrasting with a more malleable list, like Eldar. On the plus side, you'll have a very resilient army with low model count (so it's relatively cheap and forgiving to start out with) and it's easy to assemble and find an effective colour scheme for in a shorter period of time than most armies.

Xtremely easy to paint! Great beginner army!
JUst fun all around. I hate ophase out, but ou can avoid it
I just L000ve the expression on the other guys face when my guys get back up and start killing again. An interesting thing bput them is that they cost HUGE points but are the strongest army (per model) A warrior has the same stat line as an SM, but slower and better leadership. Theyre guns are better too and they can come back.

Anyways necrons are fun!

Here's the question for you. Do you like the idea of an implaccable foe that even when you put down can still get up?

Do you like weaponry that can destroy even the heaviest of vehicles carried on -all- of your infantry?

Do you like their models? Do you think you could sleep easy knowing that you play crons?

Necrons are awesome, flat out. Great fluff (yes I said it so there, ya'll are just jealous) great units.

Also with the coming of the Necron Phalanx set and the new lord it is well worth the investment. I'd proxy a few first, like ten games or so if you play often. then get a small force, and then go from there.

Necrons are an easy army to paint and an easy army to play. They're cheap money wise to purchase. If that appeals to you then go for it. Personally I detest them and every game I've ever played against them has been very dull. But to each his own my friend.

Malakai easy to paint if you're lazy, hard to paint when you want to add detail and such to them. and no they aren't so cheap money wise for a specialised force.... yes the typical destroyer heavy + mono is cheap money wise because two battle forces a mono and lord take care of all of your needs but for those of us that use immortals, flayed ones, wraith and ts... it gets to be one of the most expensive actually

Its one of the armies that offers the very little variety in ways of viable army lists, sure you can use other things like pariahs, wraiths, flayed ones but really they ain't going to help you much in the long run.

You aren't going to have much in the way of fun troop options, warriors MUST be squads of 10+ which is kind of annoying and they have no good upgrades (please for the love of god don't say disruption fields is good on them). That actually goes for most units, no upgrades aside disruption fields, got way to boring for me so I switched armies.

Another thing you spend half the game rolling WBB...

Other than all that they are a good army and probably one of the most annoying armies to play against unless you know their rules well.

Damn right.

And don't even THINK about starting Tau either.;)

With all the changes that GW is doing to “Other” 40K Codex’s….. Maybe Necrons will not seem so boring anymore to people who play other armies…..as their lists get nerfed….. Evil Necron Laugh……

The only thing I can look forward to is how little they can they “Nerf” the Necrons Codex

And really…When people start to chime in about how dull the Necron army is or how boring it is to play against / paint, I could say the same about their armies…you know the 6 man laz- plas squad, The take as many as you can assult cannon list… and the list can go on and on….

And on color well let’s see… blue, green, red, black, yellow….same old stuff here isn’t it

But seriously, they're pretty boring unless you play around with the Lord's teleporting item and the monolith's teleporting ability. Then they're mobile and fun.

One of the problems with Necrons is that some of their units aren't actually very effective and aren't used much. So most armies have many more Warriors than you'd expect if you've played DoW... and that could lead to dull, one-dimensional games.

But I've seen some very well painted ones, using white, or bone, or an effect of green glowing from within their rib cages.
