I always see it as

Tier-a-nids
or sometimes
Tie-ra-nids

supposedly it's pronounced
Tie-ran-ids
being based off the planet Tyran which was the first to be invaded by them

anybody else have any other dialects?

Weeeeeel..............

Me and pretty much everyone I know pronounces it Ti (fit) ra (cat) nids
I have only heard one person in 13 years say "Tie" at the start. Tell a lie, make that 2.

So really the question is

is Tyran's y a long or short version?

It me it looks like the long where y is pronounced like Tie-Ran
could also be like tea as Ti-Ran.

Strange how English works huh?

Used to think it was Tie-ra-nid, but most people say Ty-ra-nid. Both pronounciations are correct since GW haven't told us which one is correct.

Most people here pronounce it tie-ra-nid, but that's only because of their chinese accent when speaking English, but those that have English here as their mother tongue pronounce it ti-ra-nids, don't know if we are saying it wrong or not though. :eyebrows:

ti-ra-nids for em and everyone i know.

Though following logic is really should be tie-ra-nids. But then again its all about accents. and tie-ra-nids sounds **** as.

I, actually, always pronounced it

Ti-ran-ids

With the "i" in "Ti" pronounced like the first "i" in "mitigate"

But then, I am Welsh...

When I lived in Scotland, we prounounced it "Tie-ran-id".

Moved to England, now pronounce it "Tih-ran-id".

I'll go with the second one, but I prefer the first one, simply because they were named after the planet "Tyran", which looks more like it should be prounced "Tie-ran" rather than Tih-ran".

Also, it makes sure they don't sound too much like the capital of a middle eastern country. Keep going down that road, and we might as well call them "Iran-ids" ;) .

Well. the only way to pronounce it is how the Tyrandis themselves say it, which I'm transmitting to your brain right about now!!! :D

When I started with my nids I called the tie-ran-ids now i very rarely call them anything but my nids but when I do use their full name its crept to being ti-ran-ids.

I go with 'Ti-ra-nids'

The planet Tyran, I'm thinking was named for the Old Norse god Tyr, which is pronounced 'Tier'.

So following from that, it should technically be 'Tier-a-nids' which gets shortened with use to 'Ti-ra-nids'.

I just say "nids" :p
But yeah, I'm in the "Tier" school of thinking. Ti-ra-nid.

With the name coming from the planet Tyran, which is a humanly named planet, and assuming Tyran is pronounced like in Tyrant, I pronounce them

Tie-rha-nid

(like in Tie fighter :p , the god Ra and a short soft nid)

Easy.. Look up the definition (which should always include the pronounciation) of Pyramid. Then just swap put the p for a T, and the m for an n. You'll get the same sound.

Tyran... well, is it named after the noun Tyrant (Tie-rant) or the the adjective Tyrannical (Ti-rann-ical)?

This question is just as difficult as the old "how do you pronounce Tzeentch" can of worms...

its meant to be pronounced as in tyranosaurus, as that was the original inspiration for them according to JG. And their are two equally viable pronunciations of that. So pick whichever you prefer.

That's how I do it anyway, but I have a non regional American accent. My FiancÚ would no doubt pronounce it quite differently.

My father talked with the writer of the original Codex: Tyranids a looooong time ago. He said that the guy told him it was tyr (turn without the n) - RA (ran without the n) - nids.

The 'tyr' is pronounced just like the tyr in tyranny, which incidentally is the way tyrannosaurus is supposed to be pronounced.
