View Full Version : Cypher and Fallen Guard...
Hi guys,
First i'll give you a brief, I havent modeled or played in over 10 years, fell out with 40k and then back in love with it only recently. I have decided to do a few little projects with models I like (all of which are CSM). Initially these will be just modeling projects but I will be investing in the new CSM Codex in sept so these could be the foundations of a new army, i'm unsure at the minute.
Anyways, heres some WIP pics for what i've done so far...
Cypher with sword in right hand rather than holstered on his back (I'm aware of the noticeable molding i've cut off that will be filed and then covered)...
http://www.garethjohnson.net/warseer/cypherfront.jpg
Cypher's back with small GS skull to make use of the chains modeled on his back and to cover the hole where the sword would usually slot (Apologies for the dark photo)...
http://www.garethjohnson.net/warseer/cypherback.jpg
Some of the Guard...
http://www.garethjohnson.net/warseer/trooper.jpg
http://www.garethjohnson.net/warseer/shooter.jpg
This one will have a standard attached to his power pack...
http://www.garethjohnson.net/warseer/barker.jpg
Last one with some GS cover-ups (Black Templar symbols) etc...

Lastly, the complete group...

Any thoughts welcome as i'm basically new to 40k again, it's been 10years but i'm hooked :)
Wow! Looks great... and I love the Cypher model, and what you've done to it just makes it look better!
At first I thought the Marines looked kinda weedy, then realised they didn't have shoulder pads... cant wait to see more :)

Nice job with cypher -you made an otherwise mediocre model look good
isn't cypher supposed to have his sword holsterd because it is the sword of lion el johnson and is broken in two pieces? at least it says so in the fluff. But i am no fluff geek so i dont really care but i just want to know. but it looks really good

I dont know the history either but the sword looks pretty intact to me lol. Besides he will be part of my Chaos army and I dont remember many a Chaos fellow following the 'rules', it is also most like I'll have to play him as a champion or lord because the rules for Cypher are very sketchy.

Well none of us can tell if it's intact or not as it's holstered.
And it do say in the fluff that it might be the Lion Sword and that Cypher Never draws it and he's a gunfighter in close combat.
But I like the theme of this, and much love for running legs!

Its all ifs and buts, the sword could be this and could be that and Cypher maybe be this or maybe that. It was the ambiguity of Cypher that drew me to doing the project, I like to think that Cypher is a rogue, albeit now wholly consumed by the Chaos gods. The Lion Sword is drawn, complete and under the possession on Cypher who will use it as he pleases! :-P
I never really thought of it as being holstered (in a scabbard :wtf:), and even when I painted the model I painted it like metal... so meh,

Cypher does have the Lionsword, which is broken in two. He never draws it, but fights with a custom boltpistol and plasmapistol. It is believed that he makes his way to Terra, either to make ammends to the emperor for all the fallen, or to cut his throat. At least that is what I gather from the fulff surrounding the dark angels.
Yeah, the sword is holstered and broken, and Cypher does only fight with pistols in close combat; but hey, it looks cool, which is all that matters really.

No he also uses a C"tan phase knife. But the sword is in a scaberd and it is the broke one.
Lovely guys thanks for the fluff, but forget all that it takes the fun out of the model. Considering the rules are rhubarb for Cypher, the sword will be used as a power weapon on my model in battle. Thanks for the input tho :)
Hopefully some more updates soon as i'm off work on thurs and fri :D

He lost the C'tan phase knife while using it against a C'tan, it merged with his body, he's a gunfighter only now.
A question about the colourscheme, will you go for black like the Dark Angels were when the legion broke up during the heresy?

It is practically certain yes :) They will be mostly black with some very very dark green patches. Most of my army will be black with only minor colour references to their allegances. Just ordered some parts for my next project while I know I have the cash, but no more on that at the minute need to get these guys done first.
These guys look great, very dynamic. I don't think cypher was that bad to start with but your conversion looks pretty cool so far. Can't wait to see you get some paint down on them.

crush the heretics!
though seriously that is some simple modelling that went a long way. It looks amazing! kep churning the ideas out so we can admire (and copy) them... :)
Done some bits today so will upload more pics tomorrow!
Some more GS bits I did last week...
A Skull to the cover the removal of the molding on Cypher's sword...

Nurglitch-banner... This is love~<3
GOOD GOD! That is nice gs work
Having just read the new CSM Codex, the only problem with what i've done is that none of them have Bolters and as CSM can carry these plus CCW and Pistols then I now have to attach Bolters each of these without it spoiling the modelling! Grr.
I'm racking my brain now for ideas on the Bolter issue, does anyone have any ideas?!

just gs a strap, and have them at their side?
or attached to their back?
Great modelling work, Cypher is a great carachter and your doing well at bringing out the evil.

You could also try having one of the more aggressively posed guys dropping his bolter or just have it lying at his feet as if it just ran out of ammo.
Given that you're using the smaller Cypher packs you might be able to GS a strap and have them slung right behind the shoulder between the pad and pack.
Cool nice ideas, DarkArg cheers :D

great work, I always wondered if anyone would do a Cypher themed force!
Decided not to bother with the holstered bolters as time was getting on, having just received my new Chaos army boxset and with ideas a plenty this project needs to get done :)
Been a while but finally found some time to sit down and do some painting...

Hey i did the same thing once. I never finished it though :(. I have a group shot, wich include the unfinished models and 2 close up shots from the marines. I used the traditional black armor and gave them metal trims.

@Free Spirit: Nice work on them, look sweet :)
I've just received a box of veterans in the post and some more back packs, plan on using only one veteran though giving him a sword and a plasma pistol to act as a decoy Cypher :D God knows what i'll do with the rest of the veteran bits lol

lol, ok lads who's sneazed on my shoulder pad own up now!!, lol jkin
Cypher is supposedly goin to kill the Empereor to complete the star child process which will transform the Emperor into a god and in doing so the fallen will be forgiven. Now thats a religion.
Did you get told this in a dream? ;)

actually, i've heard that too. Not many people have, but it comes from a pretty reliable guy. anyway great work!
Tis a good story lol with one minor flaw they have been wholly obsessed by the chaos gods for years not a habit that can be broken too easily. Maybe GW are planing a new space marine codex... Codex: The Forgiven ;)
I hope they dont spoil Cyphers character with this tripe.
Oh and cheers, not much progress recently though due to Uni work!! :(
