View Full Version : Blog of the Living Dead

Welcome to my army blog. I'm BobTheZombie, an infrequent and sometimes seemingly invisible poster on this most hallowed of forums. I had a blog a while back, but as I have very little to paint, it was a little pointless. I was heartened by the responses I got however, so I decided to start another one. I don't buy models often as my income was shoddy, but now I have a job I decided to fork out for the new Chaos Army Set. I'm a Chaos player by the way, been playing Black Legion for years but the models I have produced up to this point aren't really that great, so I decided to start anew with the new codex.

This model I did a while back, but I was pleased with the way it turned out so I'm making it the first model of my new army....

The army set should be arriving any day now, so I thought I'd toy with some ideas on here and see what you think. The possessed I intend to paint mainly skin colour but whiter, as the 'Eavy Metal ones look a bit Xenosy for what are basically Space Marines. The force will be lead by Terminator Lord Bob (Itried coming up with an impressive name, like "Zakthos, Pillager of a Thousand Worlds, Favoured of The Dark Gods, He with the Pointy Hat Tiddlywink Champion of Cthonia For Three Years Running") but it sounds a bit silly, so Bob will suffice.

The Berserker parts I intend to mix up with the basic CSM sprues to make 23 basic Black Legionnaires, as I don't like the much maligned big hands, and only like the DoW helmet, so I'll get a load off a bits site if I want some. So, thoughts? Ideas? Anyone reading this thread? Any input in terms of fluff/support/critique would be appreciated, will update when I get the box.

This thread has had 54 views, most of which were not by me, but maybe I had to catch your attention more, I don't know. I don't have conclusive proof that the Pope dabbles in transvestism or anything eyecatching like that (although that would be eyecatching, but maybe second time lucky, eh? Comments would be most welcome

Well, work has started on the Army Set. The Terminator Lord kit is very nice indeed, very imposing but perhaps could have done with another sprue- none of the head were really what I wanted (I wanted a helmet that said "I am Jack Bauer, John McClane and Chuck Norris rolled into one. Boo") Here he is in a relatively early stage...
Head is a bit better than in this pic, but I may add more thin washes of colour to give depth. Also, I need to do something with the metal plate at the side of his head, and somehow do the eyes

The cloak has since been shaded, and looks a lot better for it

The Terminators are also a very good kit, but can be posed very badly quite easily. Here are my attempts...

I'm stuggling to paint the tusks well, anyone got any good techniques for that? I've never been good at them, and they appear a lot in Chaos armies, so now would be a good time to get good at them.

Next up will be some pictures of the possessed, which are made and undercoated, and some of my Khorne Marines. Not Berserkers, CSMs with and Icon of Khorne and some Berzerker components

ooh... shiny... how did you do the colour on the thing on the Lords base? Looks nice...

Like the models and nothing much wrong with the terminator poses.

To get the pictures to come up, go to your photobucket album. Beneath exh piture should be four different URL's. Click in the bottom one (it starts and ends in IMG) and it will automatically copy the link. Paste it into you post and it should work automatically.

Keep up the good work on the Chaos dudes, will be keeping an eye on it.

Thanks for that Marovian, that's always flummoxed me, so it's handy to know how to do it. The base star thing is just Iyanden Darksun (I think that's the name anyway) with a bit of bleached bone.

The first of the possessed are here...
and I have assembled the entire Khorne squad and have started to make the Defiler and the next squad. The Khorne marines are in a squad of 8 with a meltagun, but should I increase to 10 and add another meltagun? Would make it a decent anti-tank squad with a champ with a powerfist, but then they'd be more useful in CC. Hmmm.....Updates tomorrow.

Can Berzerkers take Meltaguns? I thought it was only Plasma Pistols?

And that Possessed on the left is amazing so far! Great work :D

loving these new models, and nice work so far

I love the new models. The skin/flesh you painted is VERY well done from what i can see. Looking forward to seeing more from you!

Your welcome on the pics Bob.

Liking the Marines, the one with the wings is particularly cool.

The squad with the Melta aren't Berzerkers, but have an Icon of Khorne, which gives +1 attack. The difference between a unit with an Icon of something and actual specialist unit (Noise/Plague/Rubric marines) takes a bit of getting used to, but then there is little else to get confused about as the Codex is so damn simple. I must say I really think a lot of character has been lost with the codex. I don't hate it, and haven't threatened to kill any GW staff who were involved (don't look down on me for that, will you?). But I feel it was a bit of a missed opportunity. A lot of the artwork is in a less realistic, John Blache style, which I think is fine in moderation, but would like more pics like to better ones in the last codex.

I intended to work all morning on these, as I was working in the afternoon. I realised when I woke up I had actually got my usual hours in the morning as well, completely forgot about it. Luckily, I had got up in plenty of time. 15 minutes before work started is plenty of time, isn't it...? Anyway, I did a bit when I got back, not as much as I'd have liked, but enough to update you with what's been going on. I have pretty much made my Spawn, apart from a few odd details and I may replace the right arm on Spawn 1...

Spawn 1:
Do the matching arms look odd? I'm not too sure atm

Spawn 2:

Here's the Khorne squad, that Aspiring Champ has a head from the Lord sprue and a Possessed backpack (or whatever the actual name is, or is that it? I need sleep...)

Now the possessed...
This guy isn't working out as well as I'd hoped, the wings are all inky and horrible, the skin isn't as good as it looks in the pic, and there are hard to reach bits that aren't undercoated. I promised that I would paint the components separately this time, but the models cried out to be made

This is my favourite model, I think. The word "badass" should not be used lightly (because it is a tad silly), but the sword and head make this very badass indeed. With all the squad apart from the red one, I'm going for skin coloured mutations. I may work in some skin colour on the red one too, thoughts?

Again, I'm being picky but this one isn't my best either at the moment. Tomorrow expect to see shots of the Defiler fully buily (with the Apocalypse sprue head), and more progress in general. But don't hold me to that. If you go on my photobucket account there are some of the undivided squad too http://s105.photobucket.com/albums/m206/BobTheZombie/

Niiice work man :D

Looking good, Dude! I'm lovin' the new models!

Is the bare head on the Lord stock from the kit?

04-09-2007, 21:12
Update... I haven't done much painting of late because I am getting increasingly tired and am back to full time education tomorrow, so that may hinder progress. Anyway, I have started painting the Khorne champion (some patches of his helmet have turned out a brilliant shade of red, the back of it is hard to paint). Yeah BDJV, the head is from the Lord sprue. I wanted a helmeted head but the bare one was the best on the sprue. I've finished making the Defiler and the first undivided CSM squad, one more to go. Next I may add a cult squad, possibly Thousand Sons, or a Pred. Eventually I want an Apocalypse sized force, but that's just wishful thinking at the moment. I want 3 Vindicators, units dedicated to every god, 2 Baneblades, a Traitor Guard detachment and most of the units in the Codex. Not that far to go then...

On a more positive note, I have finished reading Fulgrim. Decent book actually, although I feel really sorry for Fulgrim. Pics soon, I promise

Liking the possessed guys, and the badass is cool, nice pose.
