Welcome to the fifth monthly thread of the Tale of Guilders! Nobody told me that I've forgotten to start a new thread, so it is already five days into the month!

On a midwinter night in the Wastes, a mischievous idea was born: to have a Tale project for the Guilders of WarSeer. None of them unwashed masses, just the elite of the elite of the eli... you get the idea. You can participate in one of three ways:

Classical mode ... As in the other Tale projects, you choose a game system and points level. You then paint a tenth of that total per month, with two months being "jokers". Business as usual here.

Main project ... You choose a main project, which can be pretty much anything. You will spend at least seven of the next twelve months working on that project. At the beginning of each month, you will set (and state) an individual goal for that month. This can change from month to month, and is up to you. The other five months can be spent on either the main project, or random other things.

Free for all ... Do what you want. Set yourself a goal at the beginning of the month, where it is completeley up to you what to do.

As you can see, #2 and #3 are much less restricted than the usual Tales. This is supposed to be a motivational environment - if that means twelve different units from different armies, so be it! It also means that you are bound only by the goals you set yourself. If the dreaded "real life" hits you, just set a goal you can achieve anyway.

An example, using myself with the main project of Chaos Daemons. This is how it could look after four months:

Month 1 ... plan: build, prime and paint ten Bloodletters ... achieved: ten models built and primed, 7 painted

Month 2 ... plan: finish the Bloodletters, build and prime a Soulgrinder ... achieved: all done!

Month 3 ... plan: paint the Souldgrinder ... achieved: almost done, missing some details

Month 4 ... plan: finish the Soulgrinder, paint that funky Ork character I bought last week ... achieved: SG finished, Ork primed and forgotten

The first week of each month all participants are showing their last months result, and stating this months goal. The deadline for last months entries is the 8th of each month. The rest of the month the respective project thread is open for discussion, banter, and declarations of grandeur.

To sign up, please state what project mode you want to take, and in case of #1 or #2 what your (main) army/project is supposed to be. This is the third month, but you still could join if you really want to.

Any questions? Feel free to ask!

Q & A

I feel like I want to join, but have no idea where to start with all the random stuff I have sitting in my shelves!

No problem, just go for mode #3. Take something for each month, build and paint it. You can switch between armies on a monthly basis, so while you still get stuff done, you are not restricted to only one army.

What if somebody paints only twelve single models? Would that not be incredibly lame?

Why? It would still mean twelve painted models by the end of the year, and a monthly effort for your hobby. I can not see how this could be a bad thing.

Is it possible to only do some conversions as one of my monthly goals?

Of course it is. Those goals (for #2 and #3) are set by you, and you alone. If some conversion is the only thing you think you will get done in a given month, then just do that.

Are there no jokers for #2 and #3?

No, because you can always choose to set your goal as low as you want - including "folks, I won't have any time this month, see you in four weeks". Usually - in times of moving house, having examinations, holidays or some irrelelvant other real life issues - you still have some time over the course of a month. Take that into account, and set your goal accordingly.

The Tale of Historical Wargamers Season 1, Month 11 (April completed and may WIP)

This is the thread for month 11 of The Tale of Historical Wargamers.

The first week of this thread will be dedicated to showcasing your completed work from month 2. Please refrain from posting comments and WIP pictures until week 2, at which point the thread is open to commenting, WIP pictures and whatever else you might want to post.

What’s it all about then?

This is all about increasing awareness of historical wargaming and indulging in our inner history-geek.

Any period, any company, any scale... If it’s historical, then this is the right place.

A WORD ON PHOTOS – IMPORTANT!

640x480 please! Or use thumbnails.
If you really, really want to show off a bigger picture, then put a link to it – it means those using slower connections aren't waiting for big pictures to load.

If you want to use bigger pictures then please host it on an external site like photobucket and link to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : What army/scale/period should I choose?
A : That’s entirely up to you. As long as it’s a historical wargame then you’re welcome in this tale.

Q : How many points should I aim for?
A : Since we’ll be painting models from different games and scales, this is mostly up to you. You should, however, hopefully end up with a normal sized army for your chosen game.

Q : How much do I have to paint?
A : You should try to paint approximately 10% of your army each month. For skirmish-level games, you should paint approximately 1/5 or 1/10 of the warband each month, depending on whether you’re doing a “mini-tale” or a full tale, with a minimum of one model per month.

Don’t worry if it’s not up to Golden Daemon standard. Few of us can paint to that level so don’t let yourself get stuck trying to finish a single model. Well, if your monthly quota is a single model then, by all means, fell free to spend the full month painting just that. But for the rest of us, getting done on time is more important than delivering an award winning paintjob.

Q : Can I include historical background in my months post?
A : You not only can, you’re highly encouraged to do so. This is, after all, a tale of historical wargammers, so the historical background is important.

Q: Can I still join?
A: Sure, as long as you have a historical army to paint.

Q : Can I drop out?
A : Well, we’ll be sorry to see you go. But real-life has a way of intruding at the worst possible moments, so if you absolutely and necessarily need to leave then do so. There are, after all, more important things in life than toy soldiers.

Q: So, who’re the participants?
A: Right now the participants are:

f2k: Brandenburgers (World War 2)
emperorpenguin: Union & Confederate (American Civil War)
C-Coen: Romans (Early Imperial Age)
sigur: Swedish/Protestant and Imperialists (30 Year War)
Whitwort Stormbringer: Gladiators
Codsticker: Andalusians (11th century Taifa Kingdom)
Xazil: Australians (World War 2)

The Tale of Terrain Builders 2013-part 1 – Month 2: April finished - May WIP

What is it all about?
The aim of The Tale of Terrain Builders is to help motivate those involved to start and complete scenery over the next six months.

How does it work?
During the first week of a month you post your finished terrain. The remainder of the month is for posting WIP pictures of what you are building and to comment on the work of other participants.
Ask Questions, see many different interesting ideas and help others with tutorials and advice. Since this is the first month feel free to start posting right away about anything you want to share about your future projects.

What do I have to do?
Because not everyone can spare the same amount of time for various reasons, there are different levels of commitment. The standard level of commitment (Mens) is to create a single, reasonably sized piece of terrain per month. The lesser level of commitment (Boys) requires the completion of a piece of terrain every other month, but with the commitment to show progress each month! For those that just want to show something or have even less time there is the Apprentice level: you can drop in any time and post a piece of finished scenery.
A single piece of scenery at least the size of a hill or building will be considered one piece. A barricade, tree, rock spire or similar terrain can be entered in threes to count as one piece of scenery. I made a picture for a quick overview:

If in doubt, terrain that covers a diameter of roughly 6” is what we are going for, but this is a loose definition. Since the aim is to just build scenery the rules are somewhat lenient.
A note on building whole Tables and Dioramas: simply break it down in monthly amounts of work for the level of commitment you entered in and we are happy to tell you what we think of it.
Just build, paint, flock, have fun and everything should be OK!

Can I have a break?
Because people have real lives: “yes you can!” You get one ‘Joker’, to use for a month you want to skip. During the Tale you can ‘play a joker’ by posting an appropriate picture and an explanation if you like. You should still comment if you have the time.
To make it simpler there is an overall ‘finished’ counter and you just aim for 5+. That sounds easy but the past tales prove it is not.

After six months we will all end up with some nice terrain and a good feeling for a job well done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : How do I join the Tale of Terrain Builders 2012?
A : You should join us right now! Just post in this thread and you are in, it starts that easy…

Q : Can I build more than one piece per month?
A : Yes, you can build as much as you like. The maximum you can enter is two pieces a month and they will be awarded as such. We aim to have fun as a group and to help each other as much as get things done ourselves.

Q : What happens if I build a GIGANTIC piece of scenery?
A : If you create a truly epic piece of scenery, we want to see it. We also want to see how it is done so you use months of WIP up to the finishing post and it will be accounted for the epic piece it is that way.

Q : Can I include a short narrative/tutorial with each months post.
A : Yes, we love background stuff! And learning new techniques is a lot easier when you have a nice tutorial. Write as much as you like, we will read it and rejoice. It might also help to put the piece of scenery in perspective.

The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2012-2013: Month 7 (Apr Painting and May WIP)

This is the thread where you post your work from April, and after the first week you can add comments and WIP for the current month.

If you aren't in the list below you can still join in at any time!

Mission Statement:

It is the goal of The Tale of Fantasy Painters, and all Tales for that matter, to help fellow gamers paint their armies by providing them a place to find support and encouragement.

The Tale:

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months.

The way it works is that painting would begin in September and then in the first day or two of October a thread will be put up where you can post what you had done in September (this trend will continue for 12 months). You can include as much information as you wish, but some good things to include along with the picture are: the units, the total points for that month, conversions, highs and lows, plans for next month, and a number between 1 and 6. The number is important because it has to do with feedback.

A week after the initial thread is created you can then (and are encouraged to) add feedback on the work of others. Due to the large number of people who take part in these tales it is suggested that you only comment on those that have the same number as you. Of course if there are ones that really catch your eye, or you are a trooper and want to comment on them all, that is obviously awesome.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys:

Because this is harder than you would think ... rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two categories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : When can I join in? Does it have to be at the start or can it be any time?
A : Join in any time.

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes, but if you can do this time after time then you can probably commit to more. Feel free to sign up multiple times to reflect the amount of work you plan to do (for example sign up for Beastmen X2 and submit 400 points a month, or Beastmen Men + Boy submit 300 points a month).

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example if you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q: Can I switch armies part way through?
A : No problem.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : What do I do when I'm done and the tale isn't over?
A : First thing to do is to include an army shot (everyone loves an army shot) and then it's up to you. Either stay on and paint a model now and then to take part, or start planning for the next tale. If you are really cocky then you can sign up for ANOTHER army is see if you can blitz it in time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can I *insert something here that results in more painting*?
A : A thousand times yes!!!

Q : Can Doi drop out?
A : No he can't.

Q: Can other people drop out?
A: It's up to Doi.

Another first of the month, another Skirmish Tale thread :)

We are getting close to the end of this season's Tale, fellow painters. One last month of painting to go!

We can already start to chat about season 4 of the Tale if you wish (how long do we take a break before the next Tale, do you have any suggestions, etc...).

RULES FOR THIS SEASONS TALE (you should know them by now...)

- No more than 4 figures per month.
- 1 Joker; this lets you skip a single month however unlike other tales there is no buy back.

Thread openings and replies
Please post finished pictures within seven days of the thread opening, and please reply to everyone as soon as you can after seven days. The more you put into this, the more you get out so grab a cuppa, settle down, and take the time to comment on the awesome figures that this tale always produces.

FAQs..

Q: How much do I have to paint?
1 Figure per month as best as you can, maximum of four please. The reason for four is simple – one per week for those who work at a faster pace.

Q: Can I drop out?
Yes, but think about it. 1 figure isn't difficult...

Q: How big should pictures be?
I'd say no bigger then 640x480 - thats generally what I use, shows off most things whilst not taking up too much bandwidth. That being said if you want to post something a bit larger for a specific reason then by all means go for it.

Q: I have a question!
Ask in the thread, the TOSP is always a lovely breeding ground of ideas and creativity. If its something specifically related to the tale ('I can't see, can I have a extra month off' or 'I dont understand this') then please message me

Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2012-2013!

What is the Tale all about?
The goal of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! AI, BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2012 to August 2013), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 Jokers. You can play a Joker at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you use a Joker then feel free to post a suitable image instead (of a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is for completed entries for last month (up until the 10th) and work in progress (WIP) for this month (from the 11th). Please only post completed work for last month until the 10th.

From the 11th, feel free to post any WIP pictures of what you're going to be painting this month, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like in the thread, but please keep it WIP from the 11th of the month. Do not post any completed work for this month until after the next thread opens at the start of next month.

If you have not posted by the 11th of the month, then you will have to play one of your Jokers. If you have failed to post by the 11th of the month and have already played both of your Jokers, then unfortunately you will be out of the Tale.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No, you're not too late and yes, you can still join in! Just post in this thread stating which army and how many points you would like to paint, and I'll add you to the list in the second post. Please aim to paint at least 1000 points in total.

Q : Do I have to stick to just one army? What about allies?
A : No, you can paint more than one army or include allies if you want to! If you fall into this category then just list each army you wish to paint when you sign up, or list which army your allies will be taken from. Please aim to paint at least 1000 points for each army. For the purposes of multiple armies, as long as you aim for 10% of your combined total each month then it doesn't matter what order you paint things in. You could paint 10% of each army each month, or alternate armies each month, or 5 months of one army followed by 5 months of another army, or whatever combination best suits you.

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post (approx) 10% each month to try to stay on track (and to not depress those of us who are struggling to keep up). If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over several months. For example, an Ork Stompa (600 points) could be split into 3 months of 200 points. Please post new WIP shots each month though, so we can see what you're up to.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale. BUT, we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you can only manage to post 5% one month then you could try to post 15% the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : Do I have to use my 2 Jokers during the Tale? Can I 'buy back' my Jokers during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to use them and yes, you can 'buy back' your Jokers. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale! If you have already played a Joker and manage to get a month ahead (either by painting double one month or painting a bit more for a few months), then just state in your monthly entry that you wish to 'buy back' your Joker.

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the D&D dice roller if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

If anyone has any other questions please ask them, and either myself or one of the many Tale veterans will try to answer them. Also, links to previous Tales (and the current one) are in my signature for anyone who wants to see what we get up to.

Hello, this is my first time blogging so sorry in advance if it doesn't go too well for any reason.

About January this year I started a small word bearers force to use in a doubles tournament up at warhammer world. Which I have to say was an awesome day with some awesome gamers and armies. The tournament in question was Invasion and each player had a 600 pt limit (so 1200 pts a side).

My army consisted of:

- A dark apostle with gift of mutation
- 2 units of 10 CSM with a heavy bolter in each unit
- 4 terminators, MoT, 2 PF and 4 combi-plasmas

The list was pretty solid and not very easy to shift. Where I lacked in anti tank my team mate picked up the slack as he took a necron list consisting of:

- Illuminor Szeras
- 10 immortals
- 13 Warriors
- 12 Warriors

This build won us 2 out of the three games (the only loss being to poor time keeping on an objective game) and won us best army.

I'll put up an army pic on the weekend as I don't have any yet and the army is currently on show in GW Bath's cabinet. I'll also put up some WIP pics for the rest of the army (there's quite a lot of WIP things).

Thanks for reading. Please comment with any questions or points for discussion and feel free to PM me.
