So yeah, this is another "which game/faction do I pick thread"

Recently I've re-evaluated my finances (I do this every year) and it makes for grim reading. So basically I've decided to sack off GW and collect other systems instead. My reasoning and logic being that if I go for skirmish games or alternative games that are less model intensive, I should be able to pick up forces for a few different games reasonably cheaply. I've only ever played 1 non GW game, which was secrets of the third reich, which I really enjoyed.

So with that in mind, what I'm looking for in a game is this:

1: Should be able to get a small-medium sized faction for about £50/$80US and should be easily expandable after that
2: Rules should be cheap or available online for free
3: Game should still be active, either supported by the publisher or by the community (so if not in print, are there fan updates, suggestions for model alternatives etc...)
4: Models should be pretty
5: I shouldn't give myself a hernia playing the game (no 8000 page hardback rulebooks and 4000 metal models)
6: Would prefer not to work with Restic as I had a horrible experience with a friend's Mantic Enforcers.

I'm not bothered about player base, as I reckon if the game is cheap enough to get into without a massive investment, people will happily drop a few quid to have a go.

so far the following has caught my eye:

1: Malifaux: I like the look of the guild, in particular the Ortiga starter set.
2: Infinity. I was given a Haqqislam Jannisary model and love it, had a lot of fun painting it and could definitely go for a faction of these guys.
3: Secrets of the third reich: I'd love to finish my Germans.
4: Dreadball: It's dirt cheap to get a couple of teams and some MVPs

And the following didn't appeal:

1: Heavy Gear Blitz: Looks very expensive for what it is
2: Dropzone commander: Again, looks very expensive.

I'd also like to get into Flames of War (but I'll do a seperate thread for that)

So, aside from the 4 I've noticed, does anyone have any recommendations for games that fit the criteria of what I'm looking for? Will consider anything.

Hi guys.
I'm searching for a Viking Skirmish game, that also includes the mythology-part of Viking culture. Looked at SAGA, and it seems to be a good game, but there is nothing from the mythology in there, and apparently it's really hard to make your own factions, due to some game mechanics.

I also want it to handle skirmishes anywhere up to 30-40 models per side, which seems to be a problem with a lot of systems.

So, basically, a Viking skirmish game that allow goblins, trolls, dwarves and what not. Perhaps even bigger things, like Giants or Lindormar (pseudo dragon of sorts). Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance!

I checked this game out yesterday after looking at Spartan Game's other ranges. I've always liked the smaller scale games... I was interested in Dropship Commander before I learned about the prices..

Firestorm Armada seems easier on the wallet and has some pretty cool ships. I'm wondering, is anyone into this game? I mean, it's hard enough to find people who play games like Infinity and Warmachine, let alone Warhammer (especially in my area)

If you're interested or already play, name your faction and what you think of it - Any other thoughts are welcome!

The other four are ones I'm going to be ordering online and I noticed something with the images. The Heavy Gunner and Squad Leader seem to have the non-recessed bases that the other four have, and I was mainly wondering if that is from an older picture or if they don't have the recessed bases.

So I love 40k. The setting, armies, and zany special rules are all great fun. However, with GW's price increases ($85 for a model!?!?) coupled with my new financial independence I really don't think I can commit myself to the game.

Could anyone suggest other Sci-fi wargames that are less expensive and have more than like 10 players total? (I exaggerate a tad here but really how many play Infinity, etc, and it'd be hard to find people in my area). Any suggestions are welcome.

Another reason for leaving/not getting back into 40k: I do think that GW's releases are too slow (yes even with this amped up schedule) and the simple fact of too many marine armies. I know that sounds like a typical complaint but.......there is a bit of truth to those who whine about there being too many marine armies.

I love 40k and I love everything about it. However, given my aforementioned reasons I really need a switch to something more affordable. If I want my 40k fix I'll probably play one of the wonderful RPGs Fantasy Flight has made (Dark Heresy and Black Crusade being the best ones of them all IMO).
