So I finished reading the Knights of Bretonnia Omnibus. I bought it to learn more about Bretonnia and help me get a stronger desire to build and play the army (it was already there, I just wanted to enhance it).

And all I have to say is that after all that, I found myself rooting for the Beastmen, Vampires, and Wood Elves more than the Bretonnians!

So have any of you lost a desire for an army because of the Black Library?

I'm thinking about giving black library a go, but I hear the quality varies, so I thought I'd ask for recommendations.

I'm a science fiction fan in general. I think some of the 40k background is interesting, and could potentially make good science fiction (but some of it is trash), and I'd like to explore the setting more.

I should say though, that I can't do bad science fiction. Whether its a film, a TV series, a comic book, or a novel, just being interested in the background, or the theme will not be enough to make me persevere if its poorly executed.

If it helps, some science fiction authors I love include: Iain M Banks, Frank Herbert, Phillip K Dick, Asimov, Ursula Le Guin, Heinlein, H P Lovecraft, Richard Morgan...

Should I try black library, and if so where should I start, and what should I avoid?

I was looking on Lexicanum through the Horus Heresy Series, split into different items: Novels, Novellas, Audio Dramas, and so on. Looking at it, I noticed the amount of Ultramarines material. While I am aware that the series is large, and that every Legion needs their time in the spotlight, I'm of the opinion of the amount of material done by them, and the stuff upcoming is a bit too much? I mean, in 40k, and I know this is different as it is 30k, everything is Ultramarines: the box art, the codex by Matt Ward, the movie they brought out, they had their own novel series (to be fair a lot of different chapters/legions/warbands got this, so less this I guess), and now the Heresy.

While I understand they played a part in the heresy, they weren't exactly crucial to it. I don't mind the Ultras getting a book and a few short stories in anthologies, or even showing up frequently as bit players in other books or being referenced.

The, I guess problem is the word, is that they are starring in an upcoming graphic novel (news to me, but I don't keep up to date on these things), Honour to the Dead, The Gates of Terra, Mark of Calth, Know no Fear, and Battle for the Abyss. Admitted, I have not read all of this, perhaps this is a rant, and I could be wrong/nitpicking/exaggerating what I type here, but it seems to be there has been more than enough written about them. I don't really know what willb e in the graphic novel, but did it have to be Ultramarines, in the Heresy, I mean C'mon, there's so much other stuff happening. As it stands there has been little or no mention of some Legions: Death Guard (there was flight and the Garro stuff, but nothing in too much details about the Legion, their fall, their turn, what they are diong now), or the Iron Hands (they got beat up in Fulgrim and mentioned a few times here and there), Salamanders (they do have a book coming out now, but mostly after all the above the Ultramrines got) and so on.

I could keep going on and on, but that wouldn't really help my point/argument any more, you get the idea.

Am I over reacting? Possibly. Probably. Anyone care to comment or discuss? Has Calth been battered enough yet without another story being set on it?
