I get a lot of cake topper requests from soldiers of all ranks and from all branches of the military (and even a little outside the US). Here are a few examples of dress uniforms I've done for people:

Since I'm sure it will be disputed- the BDU kilt is definitely some kind of dress uniform- don't let anyone tell you otherwise. And for context, here's an older one I did with a couple zombies:

My father has been struggling with cancer this spring. He seems to be winning thus far (thank goodness!), but I've been worried about him and wanted to do something specially nice for him this Father's Day. He has a fondness for little model castles, and has built some remarkable ones out of tiny sticks of balsa wood. A few weeks ago, I snuck my camera-phone into my parents' house and snapped some shots of one of his little wooden castles. Then I went home, fired up my Hirst plaster molds (of which I've become inordinately fond) and scaled the little 2"x2" castle up to a 9"x9".

This is not a fortification; it's more of a geometric design, with stairways spiraling up and around. It kinda reminds me of MC Escher.

As with all my castles, each level lifts off. The 2nd floor also can be removed, but it's a little fiddly so I left it on in this pic:

The thing has a dark green felt bottom so it can rest on any shelf or mantle without leaving plaster dust behind, and can slide easily. I'm happy with it, and I know Dad'll love it! :)

Hi all,

I'm wondering what the best brilliant metallic gold spray paint is for 40k models.

I've started work on a small 40k Tau force and have tried Plasti-Kote brilliant metallic gold on some tester models with mixed success. I love the finish on the army and its much quicker than hand painting - particularly with natural highlights compared to edge highlighting due to large, flat areas on the models.

The issue I'm having is the more technical side of using this brand. It takes ages to dry, marks easily and I'm finding it much more difficult than other sprays to get a nice, thin coat. Ideally, what I'd like is something that gives the brilliant gold finish which is easier to use, quicker to dry and doesn't mark. Just to make things easier, it would have to be a brand of paint which is available in the UK. ;)

Any thoughts much appreciated.

I`m having a few problems applying sand to a realm of battle board and wondered if anybody has had the same problem ? The boards are clean and I have lightly sanded/marked the boards to help anything stick to them better. I`m base coating them in a black spray primer and then applying builders sharp sand(dry on application) using pva to apply it.I`m going for a sci-fi mars look so the whole board will be covered in sand/small rocks and it looks great once dry. The problem occurs on applying paint to the sand.I`m using standard household brown mat emulsion(which could be the cause of the problem) which is brushed on lightly.95% of this works fine apart from the odd area where sand starts to come off(no great problem at this point).
The real problem starts a couple of days later where tiny sections near the edge of the board start to lift.If you gently push a knife into the gap you can remove whole sections like wall paper. The glue is still attached to the sand but has seperated from the board !

Any help or ideas would be great.

Thanks.

Hey, so I'm thinking of painting models to sell. I considered trying my hand at commissions but I'm not driven enough to paint entire armies or units with any sort of speed (although I suppose there is a market for commission painting characters.....).

I've looked through eBay for the sort of models on sale and the prices they go for and thought I'd make this thread and spread it over the Internet to get some answers as to the best way to go about this.

Even if you don't buy painted models I'd still appreciate thoughts and ideas about painting for sale in general.

1. Why do you buy painted models?

2. Are you more likely to buy off eBay rather than commission someone to do the job?

3. What sort of models are you likely to buy? Fully painted units to table top standard, one off characters painted to a higher level etc?

4. What price range do you feel comfortable with for various levels of painting?

5. Is it worth painting models from generally popular armies, if so what armies? Skaven, Chaos? (obviously painting the army of the month would be a good idea but there's little chance of getting the models cheap enough to make it worth painting for sale IMO).

Here are a few pictures as an example of my work (if I was taking pictures to advertise painted models I'd go for a proper background/camera set up).

Hey everyone.

I've gotten hold of GW's 'Imperial Primer' the stuff that's meant to be like paint-on spray they released for going overs parts you may have missed when spraying. It seemed like a handy thing to keep about since although I don't often 'miss' parts when I spray models, it happens occasionally. And sometimes i'll spray a model, then decide I want to change something. This stuff means I won't have to re-spray the entire model, I can just paint the new part.

Now when I first used this stuff I immediately had the issue that is was so thin! I painted it on, and had bare plastic showing through the coat, it took about three layers to actually get a decent coverage. Now I don't usually mind having to do multiple layers on a paint, but i've never needed to do it before with a black paint. Even thinned down my Chaos Black always covered perfectly. Is this just a dodgy pot I got? Or have any of you had the same issue? Any suggestions on how I can fix this? Perhaps a way to thicken the paint a little.

Thanks in advance for any replies. :)

I've tried Ebay (don't fancy paying upwards of £1.20 a set plus postage) and the usual suspects (Kromlech, Anvil Industries, MaxMini, Westwind) and they either don't do separate legs or the legs they do have work out more pricey than GW.

Cheers

I am about to put together the Basilica Administratum kit from GW. Has anyone tried to construct the kit in a manner that will allow one to store it flat and in several pieces? Any advice would be appreciated.
