    making an sector

so i am trying to make a skeleton map of an sector (subsectors, systems etc.)
for using as an narrative hook for future campaigns, as i need to do lots of information i need to be brief with all the pieces of it, to avoid confusion.

now fortunately, most of the codicies have nice planet description thingies, unfortunately i dont have any clue (well, maybe some vague ideas) what some of the things mean, for example

    PAVONIS
    AD Terra 101.01 (founding date...?)
Orb. Dist. 1.34AU (orbital distance? from what?)
1.12G/ Temp 24 celsius (gravity compared to earth? average temperature?)
    Industrial world (this ones clear)
Tithe grade: Exactis Particular (taxes, but what exactis particular means?)
Aestimare: B350 (no idea what this means)
    Population: 300.000.000 (another clear one)

it would also be nice to know what kinda other variations there are
or if there are some helpfull sites in the net

Take a look at the anargo-sector project. We are building a sector in depth.

AD Terra: Would be a founding or discovery or naming date.
Orb. Dist: Would be the distance between the solar body and the planet (measurement in astronomical units)
AU = The currently accepted value of the AU is 149 597 870 691 ± 30 metres (about 150 million kilometres or 93 million miles).
1.12G/ Temp 24 celsius (gravity compared to earth? average temperature?)
Those seem pretty reasonable assumptions to me.
Tithe grade: I have always thought this not only includes resources, but also manpower requirements for the Imperial Guard, etc.
Aestimare: means to rate or is a rating, no entirely sure but there are more examples here

Yeah, there should be some articles, threads and programmes on the ASP that help you out with your endeavour koni. There's even some examples of 2d maps (and how they are misleading), etc., etc.

I always liked the eyeofterror website sector/systems map, as they were nice and simple. I dont think you need to include all that information, and could probably leave out the aestimare and the diameter of planet.

yeh the EoT website did the maps really well, i think thats about as much information as you will really need for a sector, unless you do it like Anargo which is for the most hardcore fans

The EoT may have done the maps rather well but you forget something of major importance there. The so-called sectors shown on the EoT maps are nothing but sub-sectors, that is about 1/5 or 1/6 of the total size of a sector. Please refer to the map of the Gothic sector in the BFG rulebook to see what I mean or to the map of the Scarus sector in Ravenor Returned, you'll see how large a sector actually is.

It's pretty easy to be able to knock up something GW-like. For example, you could take a look at the 2d map of the Anargo sector (in progress; partial) (produced by CELS) that is very similar to the ones produced by Abnett.

Some other threads that you might find of use include:

    • The Guide and Heaven & Earth. The original document used to generate planets in the ASP. H&E is a program that does it all for you but it sometimes helps to know what all the numbers mean.
    • The Standard Representation of a world, so that all the descriptions resemble each other. Useful if you want a detailed world beyond a 'concept' paragraph. Examples of which can be found with Anargo and Archiaos.
    • Tithe and Aestimare from the UWP a system for consistently calculating the tithe class and aestimare, even if it is "something less than scientific".

    Maybe useful, maybe not.

quick quetion Kage2020, how long did it take for H&E to produce the information needed?

    Re: making an sector

H&E will produce detailed world stats in a few minutes, along with a (grainy) map and, well, maps and statistics for the rest of the system. You just pick the bits that you want and discard the others, i.e. it also generates information on the culture of the 'mainworld', etc.

You can also change how you represent the information from the various forms of Traveller. Rather neat little program.

You might also want to check out Astrosynthesis, which is also rather useful when you've got a powerful computer and are not trying to generate an entire sector!
