I was looking into buying either the rough coat that GW sell or some faux rock texture spray from a hobbyshop. Although spraying means all exposed foam must be sealed. Overall not too sure which way to go. How about yourself?

Make sure you put on at least two or three coats of PVA glue and don't spray too close.

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

The first cityfight ruin I did was painted with sand dropped on the wet paint, this came out very rough and can rip the skin off your hands, not good!, second one was sand mixed in the pain, came out better, I have tried some granite textured spray paint but dont like the blobby texture, Tommygun has suggested baking powder and PVA and I will be doing some testing around this idea.
@Yayale, glad to provide some sleep deprivation!

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

Just a note on the baking powder technique.
    Don't use baking soda.
I have found it is best to apply the diluted PVA glue with a water spray bottle set to mist.
Then slowly sift the baking powder over the glue with a fine flour sifter that is kept at least 30 cm above the surface.
Keep in mind that the baking powder does foam up a little, this is part of getting the texture.
Try to get it done in one coat, unless you want a really rough surface, as a second coat will get quit rough.
Again, try it out on a scrape piece a few times before using it on the model.
I pick up this technique from a book called "Roy Porter's Model Buildings Masterclass".
It is by far, the best scratch building guide for buildings, I personally have found.

    Bugbait, love you work.

I also see you are in Auckland, I was in Auckland but moved to Rotorua 2 months ago.

    I have a question:

The fortress you built is based on large polystyrene blocks. What method do you used to cut these blocks into shape? I know there are a few ways, ie a large knife or a hot wire, it's just every time I have tried to cut polystyrene to an exact shape it has ended very badly. What'ts your secret?

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

Rotorua is my home town, I drop in from time to time to see the old folks.
No secret to cutting polysytrene, just use a hacksaw!
I mark each face of the block, then cut into each face the depth of a hacksaw blade (10mm) use this as a guide as you cut, it is very messy but works great, I then sand it with 80 grit sandpaper, only sanding in one direction, not back and forth.
A wire brush is also very good for shaping, definately an outside job.

    Update

The SM armoury is just about finished, bit more painting to do, will leave it looking new until the others in this series have been done, I want an abandond weathered/faded look so will finish them at the same time to get the look the same.

Keen to go back and finish the SM HQ now, will probably glue its roof on to make it stronger, and then onto the SM Barracks, then some heavy bolter turret, dont plan on the Machine cult building as it just a big flat disc.

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

    Thanks guys!
Will definately do a group shot once I have a group of them.
This was my first time with an airbrush, a bit of a learning experience, nothing like the GW spraygun to use, I have to get used to the variable control of the paint output, definately glad I bought a cheap compressor, a lot cheaper option than propellant cans!
Have scanned the template for this so expect plans in hopefully a weekish.

    Update

Finished for now, will add weathering once I have a set of buildings.

Instuctions and templates here in one file.

Now back to the Dow HQ, will be detailing the interior with a basic floor pattern and paint, then gluing on the top to make it more durable, both doors will work.
