    Thanks SG

@ Bahir, yes, yes, yes and yes I used glue stick to stick the card to the walls, the floor section was straight paper to MDF without any wrinkling problems (that was why I used card for the walls, but probably not necessary, maybe just for the stuck out bits) PVA wood glue to glue the MDF together, I did think about using a hot glue gun but I wanted a join without several mm of glue in the way, I used a big blob of blue tac on the outside to hold it overnight when drying.

Future project DOW SM HQ - to be started once the Thawk is finished.

I have this base template, was scaled to be large enough to fit a plastic termy inside, does anyone think its worth the effort to have the top lift off and detail the interior?
Will do the other buildings as well but definately not interested in using the interiors as they would be quite small.

I vote no interiors, quicker to build and it will be very impressive to lay your base out to look like it does in game!

IMO if there are firing ports it might be worth detailing the inside with a lift off top. Although I wouldn't go nuts. Maybe similar to your Space Hulk corridor.

Detailing the interior could be really cool, but it's a lot of extra work that will take away from other projects.

I see no reason to limit yourself; make it sturdy with the top removable, but don't worry about putting anything inside for now. That way you can come back to it the mood strikes you. I'd modify it a bit from the pure DoW model by putting a waist-high firewall around the top, so that models could be placed up there. Put them around the front and they wont impede the drop pod hatch, like so:

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

Thanks guys, I think I will make the top removeable and detail it at a later date if I feel the need, the Space Hulk flooring idea sounds the best option for something that probably wont be seen very often, if at all.

Must finish these off first, will have to do the rest of the ork terrain to go with it one day!

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

This is a super thread!! Great work inside this one, well worth the time to read through it all

Looking forward to se the thunderhawk on youtube, opening and closing it's front ramp..

Great work on the plasma generator, especially the "trespassors will be shot survivors will be shot again" sign at the front door section made me laugh

Thanks for the tip on the propellamant in bucket of water tip. Will hopefully be able to paint more than 2 minutes at the time now, and loose some frustration about the spray paint gun thingy

I was a sceptic when seeing the first few pictures of the walls, then you used plaster and sanding and detailing and made it look awsome! Just one thing, if taggers will be shot because the commander doesn't tolerate tagging, why does the commander allow rust to grow on his gates? He should have some of his sloppy soldiers go out and remove it, though I understand that is difficult when under fire..

Happy to provide some useful info!
Ummmm, rusty gates due to budget restraints . . .

I think I will go for the "quiet sector with a skeleton staff where nothing exciting ever happens, until now" (que dramatic music)

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

just stumbled upon this log while painting my CSM's, i have wanted to build that curtain wall since it was released, but moving and time have always stayed my hand, you sir have done it justice and it is magnificent indeed.

only change i would make would be to figure dimensions of a Reaver titan and allow the upper catwalk to slide open as well to allow it and any other titan of comparable size passage. As for the plasma generators, Thunderhawk projects and all the rest it looks quite nice.

i have recently just started collecting cans foam and anything else of possible value , if i do any scratch building i hope it turns out half as nice as yours, and don't worry ill post my logs

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

Glad you like it hmmm, making the gate slide open AND having the upper catwalk to open would be an interesting challenge, luckily I dont think I will ever own a Reaver, but a scratch Warhound might be on the cards one day, the good thing about making your own terrain out of rubbish is that if you make a mistake it only costs you time to fix it!

Did some more work on the Dawn of WAAAAGH SM HQ as well.

Good post, and I agree. I'd like to get some terrain a real try myself.

I sincerely hope that you are making templates as you go - I've been thinking of making a Space Marine HQ for quite some time now and I would be eternally in your debt if you happened to have some that you could provide me...

It's all amazing stuff - keep up the inspiring work!

EDIT: I wouldn't bother with interior detail - watching the servitors build those buildings in game gives the impression that a great deal of the building extends below ground (as is obvious by the barracks which is little more than a hole in the ground for drop pods to land in).

Thanks Cygnusmax, since you are interested in the plans I will pdf them when Im finished, Im designing as I go and Im currently on version 3 of the roof section, it has been a bit of a pain, the plans will be my usual standard, scanned images and not CAD sorry but they will work!
The plan is to do all of the buildings for the marines, there might even be an ork version one day.

Heres a question for you all, there is a definate door down the high end of the building, on the other end there is the panel that looks like an assault ramp? is it? if so I will make it able to be opened, upwards or downwards? (the brown section with the Blood raven on it like this pic)

Mostly satisfied with the top section basic shape, have to bevel the edges and then cap them with cardboard.
Lessons learnt from the Plasma generator, the exposed foam centre of foamboard is very easy to damage and I intend to cover all edges with card.

To me, it reminds me of the top half of a landraider door.
You can see little half hexagonal like projections on the bottom of the door.
I think with those projections that it opens upwards like a garage door.
Humm...... like a remote controlled garage door.
Do you still have those DVD door motors?

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

I like the open upwards option, makes it easier to build.

    AHHHHHH crap!
Now you have me thinking how to shoehorn an opening mechanism in
There will be side lumps on the outside wall by the door, gives me about 15mm to play with if I can find a small enough motor and gearbox . . . will need to find an old floppy disk drive maybe!
    Something to think about anyway!

    Bugbait out

    EDIT
While a floppy drive head motor is small enough and has a very nice worm drive it looks like a stepping motor so will need some sort of clock signal to get it to work, might be too hard.

    Update

I bought a set of these craft scissors for my daughter, this pattern was just right for the top hatch, will also use it for the back door if it does not look too small on a bigger door.

    Update

Finally got around to making the back door, this looks easy but for some reason this is Mk5 as all previous door were complete crap.

Also been making a Tower for Librarium Online Bog Roll Terrain contest, been thinking about making another tube section to raise it up as it would make a great air traffic control tower for a possible airfield table.
