Thread: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

Personally I think you should make the tower higher, so that they have a better view of the incoming traffic. Nice work though. Are you planning on having glass windows and controllers inside watching computer screens - that would be cool!

As you know, I'm making a start on my own CoD board, so any advise about how you constructed this would be very much appreciated!

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

My tower was designed to go behind some ground defences (yet to be made) as a high vantage point for heavy weapons, as it grew it started to look like it should be on an airfield instead. Once its finished I will make the tower extension and then think about tinted windows and maybe some basic interior details.
I use mostly 5mm foamboard and 3mm MDF for building everything, both cut easily with a sharp knife, I have started to cover the edges of foamboard with card to diguise the foam texture and make it more knock resistant.

bugbait have you seen Fluorescent Acrylic plastic?
I was thinking it would make great force field walls for your marine base.
Just make columns with LED lights in them and place the fluorescent acrylic panels between the lighted columns.
It would give the effect of a glowing force field.

Like that idea, will have to hit up the local plastic supliers for some free samples, I just picked up some SMD LEDS (very small) for an my DOW Chappel upcoming project, Im wondering that when you light it will just the edge glow or will the whole panel glow, need to have a play!
    Thanks for the idea!

    EDIT
I think these would make great space hulk doors, hide the lighting in the walls around the door . . . still thinking about this.

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

My ATC tower structure is nearly finished, some of the "dirt wash" went a bit wrong and needs some tidying up, might hang some weapons pods under it, have some space hulk flooring to add next.

    New Project

Should be a quick one, will by 180mm high when finished, most bits designed and test fitted OK.

Steve, do you use one of those mat board cutter to get those angle cuts?

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

I use a scrap bit of foamboard to work out how much to cut out to get the right angle. I then use my dividers to acturately transfer the measurements to the surface and then cut through the paper layer, pull that off and then shave the foam centre, then run the flat of my fingernail over it to smooth it out.

You mean to tell me that there is an easier way to do this?!?!?!?!?!?!?

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

I do have a basic cutter that slides along a clear ruler, but it only does paper and is hard to get the cut exactly where you want it due to the blade not being exactly on the ruler edge, I dont use it.
The way I try to get acurate cuts for corner bends is to cut at 90 degress on a marked line, then I will cut out "X"mm from both sides of that centre line.
The angles for this project consist of pairs of cuts made at 1.5, 2, 3, 6 and 8.5mm from that centre cut.
If I could get something like that it would speed up this process as long as I could acurately position it.

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

I've seen large flat bed style cutter with the ability to cut at an angle but the basic set up was £60 and then you could see a fortune being spent on their custom blades as you needed them.

Your idea for cutting foamboard is a good one bugbait, I just need to find a method to cut thick plasticard reliably.

P.S. and yeah on the bastion. (any chance of templates as a prize? )

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

I can do plans when its all together.

Have done the first glueing, ALL of my foamboard stash has a slight warp, some worse than others, I picked the best but still I had to clamp it, basic box was glued this morning so that when I get home from work it will be all go!

I guess I have to store my foamboard on edge rather than flat . . .

    Update

I havent been shopping yet for some of those large blue flat clamps that Tommygun uses on his buildings so I had to improvise with some blocks of wood and every clamp I had, it worked out OK.
Will be doing the bottom flared section in two steps as they will need some trimming to fit, used blue tac to hold scrap foamboard to my cutting board to hold the bottom in position while the PVA dries.

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

The matt cutter is great for thin card stock and some plasticard but foamcore eats up the blade and it really doesn't run all that smoothly with mine. I guess if you get good enough with it you could score each side with it though the card then cut the foam with a knife but you might as well do that by hand and ruler anyways.

    Re: Apocalypse 40k Terrain

Thanks for that info TC, I dont mind using the Mk1 ruler and blade it just so slow at times.

    Update ish

Base templates were spot on and fit really well.
The sides will be next and Im still thinking how to do the gun ports in the walls, the real ones have no azimuth only elevation and looks a bit limited, I might do somthing that looks like the bolter sponsons on the Baneblade so that I get at least 90 deg of azimuth.

Nicely done, Looking very Atlantic Wall-ish.
Also a very good point about the guns.
Azimuth is very important when shooting plastic men off your walls.
