Dicky Does: Adeptus Mechanicus for Carnage Apocalypse

    Hello everyone,

After Simon made the throw away mention that next year's Carnage would be a team Apocalypse game I got carried away with ideas boiling in my head. I grilled him for details to find that it will be a 3000pt team game with one super heavy per team. Anvils Hammer is about as slow at painting and converting as me so we decided to team up, he with a Drop Troop Guard army and me with an Adeptus Mechanicus army, yay! I'll be taking the team's super heavy too in the form of a Warhound Titan, double yay! The two armies should be a good pair up fighting alongside one and other.

Painted pictures of a couple of the gun servitors on page 4

I've attached a .doc file with a provisional army list and all the concepts and ideas noted in comments. The total points is a bit over at the moment, Anvils Hammer will be taking a smaller 1000pt list so he can lavish attention on them and I'll be taking a 2000pt army with a big points sink in the form of tanks and a titan.

The army list may not be that effective but I felt it characterful of the Ad Mech, lots of tanks and vehicles lead by arcane tech priests and their cybernetic bodyguards along with lots of mindless gun servitors.

This is an initial WIP concept of one of the Heavy Skitarii (which will count as Strom Troopers).

The gun has been bulked out and extended a bit and the stock will be wired in to his arm. I wanted them to look heavily armoured with the bulky breastplate and cumbersome bionics. I still haven't started on his tunic but I don't want to do the typical Ad Mech robes on anything but the TechPriests. I thought they will probably have knee length tunics/robes on instead. No real bionics yet as I didn't have any suitable parts or Plastruct rod at the moment, there will be though!

I'm still not sure how I'll paint the armour. Firstly I thought I would paint the armour a nice deep red with black or grey fatigues. But now I think it will pant the armour a really worn antique looking metal and with red fatigues. Maybe even paint the fatigues to look faded ... hmm.

Speaking of TechPriests these will be represented by the officers, each armed wih a power fist for his servo harness. As there is a Techpriest Enginseer in the list, armed with a servo arm, the power fists have to represent something different which will be a servo harness different from the marine ones. I want them to look like massive constructs built in to the TechPriest with just one Servo arm mainly full of tubes and wires and advanced cybernetics maintaining and sustaining the TechPriest's life.

This is a quick concept sketch of a priest in profile with a frail, robed frame bent under the weight of his cybernetics built directly in to his back. I have in mind something far bulkier than the standard SM one with lots of other cybernetics and bionics running in to him.

Anyway, this is still very early days yet but I'll be able to get in to gear with it properly after I wrap up my marines. Thanks for looking, C&C welcome.

My Marine Project now finally with 1750pts completed... and I'm going to put this force to bed for the time being.

Other things I have messed about with a little are Adeptus Mechanicus and a foray in to WFB with Night Goblins that are a lot harder than you'd think for an obsessive compulsive converter!

Wow! I am really looking forward to this!

Little critique: the Skitarii's helmet has the winged skull on it, whereas the AdMech puts their iconography before that of the Imperium as a whole. Just shave off the wings mebbe...

I was disappointed that it's only 3,000pts between 2 players, not 3,000pts per player.
    I wanted to field 6,000pts

The first guy looks good so far.

Will you be making some stalker servitors? (chicken legs + 2 assault cannons!)
I guess you could count them as sentinels with autocannons or something...

Re: Dicky Does: Adeptus Mechanicus for Carnage Apocalypse

    Hello again,

Thanks for your comments on my rather small start!

@ Bobert: I'm not really sure, I tend not to time myself with my modelling, minis are done when they're done! At a guess I'd say I have spent about 4-5 hours on him in total, excluding waiting glues and Green Stuff stuff to dry/cure.

@ Green Shoes: Excellent point, the Imperial Eagle has passed me by. Needless to say I have removed and I will be adding little cogs and skulls all over the place in time (when I dig out the Techmarine body I have somewhere to make the symbols

@ Mike: Thanks, more will be coming but, initially at least, at a more sedate pace.

@ Darkseer: Thanks mate. I must admit I felt a tiny twinge of disappointment at it being just 3000pts per team. But then I thought that it plays in to my hands. It means I can start a new army (and have a good break from bloody power armour!) without having to break the laws of physics in getting it done in just a year!

I don't know that much about the Ad Mech that has been written in novels and such. I know stuff from Codex Imperialis and other such old books. But if there's anything obscure or little known that people can tell me about the Ad Mech I'll be all ears

What is a Stalker Servitor. From your brief description it sounds like the original IG Sentinel but with twin linked assault cannons, is that about right? I was going to include two Sentinels with autocannons that will be similar to the servitors my marines have, a mini tank thing with a servitor built in to the mounted autocannon. But these Stalkers sound interesting, anything else you can tell me will be good.

If people take a look in the list I posted, I have a rough rider squad that I was thinking of converting from the =I= scale Enforcers dog body (each reposed of course!) with a servitor built in to it. Maybe there is an existing Ad Mech unit similar to that in the fluff that anyone might know?

I have pretty much finished the Storm Trooper concept. This fits my thoughts of the soldiery of the Ad Mech, with archaic armour and random bits running about the place. I'm not sure what to do with the power feed for his Hellgun. Should I maybe just use a regular or slightly larger las magazine/battery. Or maybe cabling running in to his backpack or running from the gun in to his armour as if the power from the backpack is just fed directly through his body.

The gun need some changing as it still looks like the normal pattern Lasgun. I thought I'd cut that stuff off the top and add a more Boltgun type top section. I did some quick colour tests in Photoshop but Photobucket doesn't seem keen to upload them for me!

The regular Skitarii will have less armour on them though and probably hooded heads instead. This guy is a Storm Trooper so want him to look much more heavily armoured.

He is a test scheme for the tank camo. I thought a bit about this but all red tanks just seemed so silly, even if they are Ad Mech. I lifted this splinter camo from Luftwaffe colour schemes as the straight crisp edges seemed like a sort of camo that would appeal to the Ad Mech. These guys will be based like my marines, in an urban environment, so the camo is in grey colours, so a full blown red Martian camouflage is a bit out of place too. I wanted to add some touches of red to it, as they are Ad Mech after all, I'm not sure if this is quite what I envisioned but something like this, where touches of red are worked in.

If I can dig up some of the random bits I know I have around I will probably make a start on one of the TechPriests as they are going to be a fun, in depth conversion to get in to. Thanks for looking, C&C is always welcome (even on this small amount )

    Cheers

Looks like a very promising thing you started here, dicky. The conversion looks great so far; judging from your Marines army, I wouldn't have expected anything else from you. I definately will follow this log.

    hey rich.
the trooper looks really cool, i like it.
is it the finished one or only a concept?
cause i think the arm with the cables looks a bit..hm not solid enough for me, if the arm moves, the weapon don't or in a different direction.
maybe u add a "solid part" between the arm and the gun, that's all i would say.
    maybe u try it out

beside from that, i love this trooper, keep it up.

Kind of like this (attached) But with assault cannons in place of the missile arms and with sentinel style chicken legs.

Re: Dicky Does: Adeptus Mechanicus for Carnage Apocalypse

    Hmm, interesting idea there Darkseer!

I was planning on making 'count as' Sentinels similar to these two mini-tank servitors from my marines. They would make better Sentinels than Attack Bikes anyway.

Although, that guy does look interesting. Maybe if I made three legged servitors like that, with smaller gatling guns in place of each arm to count as the bigger, higher rate of fire autocannon. Well, it's and idea!

By the way, my marines would have munched yours up if only we started closer ... Maybe

    Cheers,

Re: Dicky Does: Adeptus Mechanicus for Carnage Apocalypse

    Sorry, I realised I hadn't Sorry, I realised I hadn't responded to everyone there!

Nocturn: I agree with you to a point, however, I want the bionics to vary from soldier to soldier (although armour patterns will be the same I want it to look like each was cybernetically enhanced at a different time by a different person. Some might have just cables fitting to their guns, others might have bionic limbs either holding the gun or attached directly to it. Others might have more subtle upgrades like a bulked up physique rather than cybernetic implants as if a Magos Biologis had a hand in it more. So lots of variety on this score.

Sigur: Thanks. Well my marines are nearly done now so I wanted to move on to newer and greener (or do I mean red ) pastures.

Del-Patch: Thanks, it was the look I was going for. Just a bit more old fashioned rather than adding lots of extraneous details everywhere. Geometric angles and clean lines but showing their age now with signs of wear and dents over the armour.

Thanks for looking, keep an eye out for more in the future!

Yeah, just do more tracker servitors. They're awesome, but I can't see them deepstriking.

    Very nice mate.

I really like how dynamic that Techmarine is... What did it take to convert him so he could sit astride the bike?

    Hello again,

It's my birthday today, 23 yay! I also have a job interview later so that would make a nice birthday pressie

I started painting the concept mini today, I decided on red fatigues and a battered and damaged gunmetal for the armour plates. I'll post pics up when I have him done and give some thought to what I'll start next in the list.

Thanks for all your comments, quite surprising as I haven't done much yet. Rest assured more will follow

@ Darkseer: Thanks mate, I enjoyed making them so I thought it would be fun to make some more. I didn't even notice sentinels could deep strike but that doesn't bother me. As I am also taking Storm Troopers as troops (meaning they can't deep strike) because I don't think it fits the Ad Mech in this situation. When they are backed up by a Titan I imagine they would stand far off firing their advanced weapons at the enemy, rather than sneaking around!

@ Freebooter: The Techmarine won't be part of this army, he's from my marine army (link in my sig). It was a conversion I did ages ago when I wasn't as good. I cut the legs off the metal Techmarine. The legs are the normal plastic biker's legs which I cut at the hips to make one foot rest on the ground and then sculpted the cog tooth pattern of the Ad Mech around his legs.

I think next up will be some gun servitors for the infantry platoons when I get round to ordering the parts. Thanks for looking!

Nice to see a new project from you, always good for inspirations for the rest of us. Any plans for more interesting scenic bases?

Also have you seen the FW Titan Techpriest? Would make a good general addition to any AD Mech army

Re: Dicky Does: Adeptus Mechanicus for Carnage Apocalypse

    Thanks Penguin!

The bases for these guys will be the same as my marines so the two armies look good side by side (as they're both Imperial armies), so they'll be tiled bases with cut outs and raised sections of bases to force some slightly more dynamic poses anyway.

I have seen that titan TechPriest as well. I was going to get him to use as an Enginseer, although I thought reposing him with one foot on a step would make a bit of a change for the very static pose. It will work well as I will be buying a FW Warhound as well.

I've pretty much finished my test paint mini. His head is missing as I haven't painted his face yet (which will be pallid and grey) nor have I highlighed the black yet. I noticed as well that I haven't painted his hand red, as if it gloved.

I like the red fatigues combined with the ancient and worn looking armour, which is also a bit of a change from the normal interpretation of the Ad Mech, I think. I thought I would be at risk of having minis that were largely black and red otherwise.

Oh, I also got the job as well. Yay, start Monday so now I'll finally have a bit of cash!

    Thanks for looking,
