    The Stars of Dorn - Gung-ho, beered up and trigger happy

    Okay, the story is long and tortured. I thought that I was well out of Warhammer 40K. My bank-balance was happy, my credit card had barely been used in ages. And then, on one fateful day, I was informed that my illustrious gaming club, the Plastic Crack Rehab Clinic, was to attend the Damocles Gulf Crusade Campaign Weekend. No problem, thought I. My Necrons or my purple Slaaneshi chaos marines of doom ™ would do nicely. But to my horror, the only armies allowed were Imperial, Ork and Tau. And to think I sold off my Blood Angels to prevent myself from spending more on a game, which I feel sucks at a basic mechanical level. That said, I love the background and I love the models. As Apologist (known on Warseer for an almost unhealthy devotion to the Machine God) had an Ultramarines army gathering dust and my bitz box was filled with marine bits, Space Marines were the logical option. Apologist’s army was painted in a realistic, banged up, battle damage style. As I pondered the options, the idea of a desperate last stand crept into my imagination. However, the Ultramarines and their successor chapters always seemed a little too perfect for anything resembling that to occur. Now those Space Marines that carry the blood of Rogal Dorn on the other hand… After a quick look, the obvious choice (Crimson Fists) were discarded, due to the horror of their trait disadvantages and limited flexibility. Therefore I would have to make a chapter of my own. Due to an imagination which I attribute to being concussed three times in childhood, together with a prolonged exposure to noxious chemicals during my PhD and way too many American war movies, the best of Arnie and Team America, the following was born.

    THE STARS OF DORN.

    In order to fully understand the Stars of Dorn you must go back to the age of strife. When the Dark Age of technology collapsed, scores of human worlds were left isolated and eventually reverted to a feral state. One such world was that of Amorica on the Eastern Fringe. Unfortunately for its population, its fall from grace was the result of an extremely bloody Ork Waaagh which left millions dead and the pitiful survivors were enslaved and put to work in vast factories, churning out arms and ammo for their brutal masters. This state of affairs lasted until the 34th millenium when the Orks embarked on another Waaagh of massive proportions. However, so caught up in their barbaric lust for destruction, the vast majority of the Ork population left Amorica, leaving only a few behind to oversee the human slaves. This was to prove their undoing. Generations of brutal treatment, exposure to the harshest working conditions and the barbarism that passes for Ork Kulture had resulted in a force to be reckoned with. Two weeks to the day after the Waaagh was launched, every last Ork was butchered, the vast majority dying from blades, which seemed to have come from no-where.

    By the 39th millenium, the Amoricans had developed a vibrant yet crude culture, still pervaded with Ork influences and had reached an industrialised but pre-interstellar level of technology. The most important organisations on Amorica were large corporations, whose "Lawyerz" or contract killers kept the population in line with displays of sickening violence against criminals and other scum, recorded live for the gratification of the blood-thirsty masses.

    In the year 39,726, the Amoricans made contact with the Imperium, in the form of a number of stinging attacks on isolated farm worlds on the eastern fringe. Initially the raids were mistaken as the handiwork of Orks, but when it became clear that the blood of Imperial citizens had been shed by human hands, a Crimson Fist strike force was sent to teach the savages the true nature of the galaxy and humanity's place within it. After the seat of Amorican rule (Da White Hut) had been targeted with a full orbital strike and the Amorican CEO had been defeated in a head-butting competition with the Crimson Fists Captain Horront, the Amoricans swiftly accepted Imperial rule.

    Oddly enough, faith in the Emperor spread like wild-fire. However, acceptance of their place within the Dominion of the Imperium of Man was harder to come by. It was not that the Amoricans objected to the idea, it was more that their fierce martial pride resented the thought of being subjugated by in their minds, lesser, girlier men. In time, this sentiment would have disappeared, but fate intervened.

    The rise of the Tau Empire coupled with the arrival of Hive Fleet, sent shockwaves through the Segmentum Ultima. The need for heightened vigilance against the xenos scum, caused the High Lords of Terra to order the founding of several new space marine chapters. One such chapter was the Stars of Dorn, founded in honour of the actions of the Crimson Fists all those centuries before. In order to ensure that the new chapter upheld the finest traditions of the Adeptus Astrates, the Stars of Dorn were formed around a battle company of the Crimson Fists, who became the chapter’s first company. Sixty-six years to the day after their founding, the Chapter lost the majority of its ranking officers and a large chunk of its first company in a large-scale engagement against the Orks on Valtosh IX, to the disgust of many of the Amorican born Stars.

    After a monumental number of challenges, head-butting competitions and a drinking contest that lasted the better part of a month, Arnlod Schwazenkegger was sworn in as the new Chapter Master of the Stars of Dorn. Born and raised as an Amorican, Arnlod had very firm ideas about the future of the chapter. Ideas that would have called down the wrath of the Inquisition, were it not preoccupied with the onslaught that was Hive Fleet Kraken. As luck would have it, the Governor of Amorica, Georgius Dumus was without an heir, a state no doubt aided by his fondness for vast quantities of Amorican Fungus beer. It was simple work for Arnlod to “persuade” the governor to bequeath Governorship of the planet in perpetuity to the Stars of Dorn. This achieved, Arnlod began to do his best to limit the influence of Imperial culture. Master Schwazenkegger also ordered the majority of the chapter to strike the Imperial Eagle from their insignia and heraldry, as an act of penance for the loss of their heritage. Instead, it is now used as the chapter’s highest medal of honour, reserved for only the most renowned and distinguished veterans. Master Schwazenkegger has said promised that the Stars of Dorn as a whole can only reclaim the right to bear the Eagle when their deeds are ranked as highly as those of the Imperial Fists. This is essentially impossible, as there is no way that the Stars of Dorn will ever be able to come out of the shadow of those who held the Imperial Palace against the hordes of the Great Betrayer, a fact that Arnlod is fully aware of.

    Unlike most chapters, particularly those descended from the Dark Angels, The Stars of Dorn keep close ties with their human families. In actual fact one of the main reasons why the Amorican population is so keen to see their sons become Space Marine aspirants, is the fact that if their son is successful and becomes a Marine of renown, the subsequent sponsorship deals will make them rich. Typical sponsors include Zubweiser, the Emperor of Fungus beers and Kil-Cola. Every Amorican year, the Marines return to their families to commemorate the day Amorica threw off the shackles of Ork repression. This typically involves the consumption of vast quantities of fungus beer and apple pie.

    The first recorded contact Amorican culture had with the Tau Empire was in 40,753, in the form of attempted diplomatic overtures by the Water caste. Despite being encouraged by the Amorican’s seemingly independent streak, it was not a success for the Tau. The mere suggestion that everyone work together for the common good in the absence of individual profit, filled the Amorican populace with stark loathing. The Tau delegation found themselves as the main course in a banquet that should have been held in their honour. When word of the Damocles crusade reached the Fists, the decision was instant. The entire Chapter would be mobilised against the “Blue kommie bastards”.

    In terms of combat doctrine, the Stars of Dorn diverge notably from the Imperial Fists and their successors. Their lust for battle is so great that they take risks that even other marines would balk at, trusting to their armour and their natural toughness. Some whisper that such an attitude may also have arisen thanks to the masochistic tendencies that are often granted as a side effect of Imperial Fist geneseed. Even immediately after their initiation, which involves dropping them off on one of Amorica’s continents, the Middle West, which is still infested by Orks, new recruits are trained not on the firing range, but on the battlefield. As a logistical necessity, this gung-ho approach has forced Chapter Command to order the training of every single marine who shows the slightest inkling of medical skill in the ways of the apothercarium. The lack of formal training coupled with the deep-rooted Ork influence in Amorican culture, means that even other space marines find the Stars lack of apparent professionalism and raw enthusiasm for a good scrap disconcerting.

    Unlike the majority of other chapters, the wargear of the Stars of Dorn is not handed down. On a marine’s death, their weapons and armour are ritually dismantled and smelted down. A new battle brother must buy his arms and armour from the chapter foundaries, putting him in immense debt, which is typically only repaid after at last a century of service. Stars of Dorn earn “kredit” per enemy kill and for each successful mission. Once a Star has obtained their own reputation and following on Star-TV, they can make their own sponsorship deals. Once they have paid off their debt to the chapter they are free to commission additional wargear and embellishments to their armour from the foundaries as well as financially supporting their descendents back on Amorica. This flies in the face of the Codex Astrates, but the Stars of Dorn cannot shake off their capitalist upbringing.

    The Stars of Dorn make a point of always going into battle with embedded reporters who broadcast the finest slaughter to “the folks back home”. As a consequence of this, the Stars of Dorn excel at propaganda and one of the first signs of their presence in a battle zone is a flood of cheap merchandise in Star of Dorn colours. Due to this approach, their customary abandon once on the battlefield is tempered with a surprising level of caution at the tactical level. Targets that other chapters would engage on the ground despite a high level of risk, in order to prevent collateral damage to Imperial personnel are typically subject to orbital barrage or air-strike by the Stars’ thunderhawks. Star vehicles are often crudely daubed with advertising for their corporate sponsors together with a variety of obscene comments designed to mock and vilify the foe. Despite their independent streak, The Stars of Dorn venerate their Primarch and the Emperor with an almost unhealthy level of devotion. Such is their dedication that every marine tries to ensure that the last words on their lips are: “Rooooooooggggaaalllll Doooooorrrrrrnnnn”.

    Heraldry
    The Stars of Dorn, like the Crimson Fists, wear predominantly blue armour, decorated with stars and white and red chevrons, which represent the flag of the Amorican Republic. Their armour and vehicles are also "decorated" with corporate logos and advertising.

    “Get some, Get some, Get some!”
    The Stars of Dorn are also well known for their butchery of the Imperial language and tend to treat most missions as an excuse to broadcast a deafening series of insults and curses. In fact, many Stars actually have developed their own continuous literanies of purgation. One prime example of this is Brother Jackson, who actually deafened several eldar harlequins with his own unique version that began with the words “Let me speak to you from the book of Ezekiel for a moment.”

    The following pictures are strictly work in progress. Once the Christmas holidays start and I have access to natural light, I hope to take some better photos.

    I'm concentrating on the Veterans simply because they have captured my enthusiasm.

    Love the fluff of your chapter. I think Stars of dorn deserve to be lead by a captain with a big hat and a combi-flamer. For the smell of it in the morning ^^

    Cheers. I like the suggestion. I've also been told to make a Captain Amorica model, complete with huge shield and winged helmet. The Apocalypse now suggestion, cries out for a scout called Lance with a surfboard strapped to his back

    Essentially my 2500pt army will be composed of 30 veterans, inc Chaplain and Force Commander, all in 3 land raiders, backed up about about 40 tactical marines.

    The dreadnoughts may find use in the smaller games.

    Oh one more thing. I intend to do a couple of bike squads in Evel Knievel style colours (ie predominantly white with stars and stripes patterns). Hmm perhaps I should call the Veteran Sergeant Elvis.

    Ideas for slogans, sponsorship (i.e. adverts) are more than welcome.

    I'm wondering if I can get away with an abbreviated version of the Team America speech as a banner. I intend to replace the Film Actors Guild and Kim Jong Ill with the Tau and Abbandon the Despoiler, respectively.

    One of the Landraiders will be called "Made of Win"
    The Landraiders will have numberplates, including:
    "L2P N00B", "4TW" and "Q HRDR N00B" and possibly the obligatory "1337".

    Other ideas for banners and slogans include "If you can read this sign, it's too fracking late"

    "We Fight for Peace and fuk for virginity"

    "Your Add Here"


    Modelling conversions will include:

    Drinking hats
    Hot dogs
    Zubweiser bottles
    cigars
    Baseball cap
    Cowboy hat (with spurs if I can model them)
    Shades

    I will also name each and every marine if possible with a cheesy action movie call-sign.

    Thus far I'm looking at:

    Maverick (probably the shortest of the bunch. May be one of the walking wounded. In which case he will be nursing a shot ****. Sorry but any man who actually DIVORCED Nicole Kidman needs the **** ripped off him for all time),Goose, Iceman, Dutch, Matrix, Hicks, Hudson, Jones, Ricko, Richeck, Bobby-Boy, Bubba, Dirty Parry, B.A, Chuck, (more names appreciated)

    And....

    CHAPLAIN NIXON!

    Edit: What was I thinking! A Dreadnought Nixon is far more appropriate. "NIXONS'S BACK!"

    On that note, I'll stop before the GW Police bash down my door and try to mindscrub me. Having said that, I pity the fool that goes anywhere my brain .

    A couple more WIP shots. I really need to learn to work on each model in turn until its finished.

    I have also spent a great deal of time assembling the rest of the force.

    Currently I'm looking at:

    3 x Tac squads with ML, Flamer
    3 x Tac squads with HB, plasma gun
    3 veteran/command squads
    2 x 10 man assault squads
    An additional 4 HB, 4 PC, 4ML armed marines for devastator squads
    3 landraiders
    1 predator
    3 dreadnoughts
    2 attack bikes
    10 normal SM bikes
    Force commander
    Chaplain

    I also have several crusty old terminator models, including characters, if I get desperate. I reckon I can probably generate another Tactical squad if I use my leftover bits creatively.

    Apologist gets the credit for the tank rider. However, I'm really pleased about how the red and white chevrons are shaping up. Now to somehow get my painting neatened up. I have a long way to go before I approach you or GrahamGilchrist.

    Behold, Chaplain Donohue. Even before becoming a space marine, Donohue's devotion to the God-Emperor was only exceeded by his hatred of those who took his most holy name in vain. His hate has served him well and foes beyond counting have fallen before his might. However, his blindness to the mere suggestion of compromise, such as the idea that all those who even falter in their faith should not be slowly lowered into boiling acid has made him a headache for Master Schwazenkegger, who has to keep a firm leash on him, particularly if the circumstances mean that the Stars have to fight alongside some of the less devoted Imperial Guard regiments.

    It is said that Chaplain Donohue once fought alongside the legendary Ciphas Cain. This is a lie. The commissioner deliberately spent the entire campaign as an advisor to Lord General Melchett and on one occassion actually volunteered for an assignment on the front-lines, when the Stars HQ was due to discuss strategy with the Lord General.

    Behold!

    More of the Stars of Dorn, in the form of Terminator Assault Squad Pown and Medic Hawk-Eye.

    While painting these, I had a bit of a relevation...

    You can clearly see in one of the thumbnails, the back of one of my terminators. Notice that I've painted one of the buttons red and the other a glowing green. As far as I can work out these are probably akin to traffic lights. Imagine you're in a space hulk with a bunch of fellow terminators. You're in the middle, with your vision obscured by the guy in front. You're wearing a suit of armour that weighs about a ton. Without some kind of a way to synchronise your movements with the rest of the squad, you're going to clunk into each other... So.. Green means keep plodding!

    Ok, I'll admit I had a few doubts about the theme when you first embarked on this project, but you've done an awesome job with those Terminators! The colour scheme totally works. The medic looks good too. Keep it up!

    It's a stand-up good-looking scheme, Morningstar. I'm particularly impressed with the lovely clean white on the apothecaries. I reckon these guys are going to stand out beautifully on the table.
    I'm also dead impressed with how clean the stripes look keep up the good work!

    Thanks for the kind words all.

    Apologist: The trick to getting the stripes right seems to be a mix of using the flat of the brush rather than the tip (and keeping to the same sized brush throughout). I'm also remembered about the point that a number of monkeys could write the complete works of Shakesphere if every correct character was retained and left unaltered. Because I start with foundation paints followed by skull white and blood red, there's a lot of going over which enables mistakes to be corrected.

    Having said that, I'm currently working on my two 10 man assault squads. The jump-packs really make painting the stripes on the shoulderpads an exercise in frustration. Oh well, I guess having to grit my teeth for hours on end will help me to get into the right frame of mind for actually using the army. I wonder if I can bring a small tape player or something to the Campaign weekend, so I can actually play the Team America theme as my army goes into battle. Wait. My mobile phone will work a treat .


    As for the vehicles, very small sized masking tape is absolutely perfect. Just put strips over the area to be done, in the direction you want, remove every second one and there you go. I start from the undercoat, but there's no reason why you can't get the entire surface one of the stripe colours before you do the masking. With my current method, there ends up being a noticable difference in thickness between unpainted and painted stripes, thus making potential slip-ups much less likely. However, this does make "gaps" more noticiable.

    On another note. Once everything I've got has been painted, I'm going to expand the army with a Land Raider Crusader, 2 squads of terminators, another assault terminator squad and some terminator characters, especially the sweet looking Chaplain. With the Terminator squads, should I give them two heavy weapons each or assume that they will be nerfed down to 1 heavy weapon a squad soon?
