Renegades and Heretics! Another year, another Guard Army...

    Hi all.

Well, with my loyalist Guard armies all more or less finished, my Orks in stasis and having lost interest in my Marine Army, I've decided to turn my attention to sprucing up and finishing off my Traitor Guard.

Previously I have run this army as a Blood Pact force based on the Lost and the Damned list. However, with Codex Eye of Terror becoming defunct once and for all, I've decided to convert the army over to the Vraksian Renegade Militia list at the back of Imperial Armour vol 5. At the same time I've decided to completely revamp the army background and make the army a bit more unique.

The idea is that the List represents the debased remnants of an Inquisitorially inducted Imperial Guard Regiment who have followed their master into worshipping the dark powers.

The Inquisitor is a radical follower of the Istvaannite creed that only through turmoil and conflict can the Imperium remain strong. However, his fascination with war and destruction has lead him onto the path of worshipping Khorne. At this stage the army bears no gifts of Khorne - worshipping him primarily in his aspect as a God of war rather than outright slaughter - and shows little outward sign of their corruption except for the odd Heretical symbol here and there. However, the Regiment has been declared diabolis extremis and is forced to raid for supplies, equipment and even new recruits - press-ganging civilians from wherever they make planetfall and forcing them to fight in large, poorly organised mobs, whilst those who swear devotion to the Regiment are bullied into slightly more organised Infantry squads with a lasrifle thrust into their hands. Over and above all this are the Inquisitors personal bodyguard, who are either assigned to Infantry Platoons to keep order by whatever means necessary, or are organised into elite teams and equipped with the very best equipment available where they act as fast strike forces.

The new (3000 point) army list is as follows...

    HQ:
    Command Platoon:

Exalted Champion with Bolt Pistol, Power Weapon and Carapace Armour

Anyway, I expect you want to see some pictures.

First up, some of the armour.

this stuff has been finished for some time and I'm rather pleased with the way it came out, so I'm loathe to repaint it. As such, red will probably remain the base colour for the Regiment, even if I change the infantry uniforms a bit...

    And now for some infantry:

This is the command section, less it's advisors. Since this picture was taken I have finished building the Exalted Champion and the missing veteran, but they're all far from painted.

    The Infantry command section.

A close up of the Champion, who was made out of a spare FW officer torso I had lying about.

The Enforcers, who are made from a mixture of Chaos marine and Cadian bits. These guys used to be Aspiring Champions in the old list, hence the bulky armour and why I've given them Carapace armour now. The heads are new, and come from a Company called Pig Iron Productions for a very reasonable £3 for 20. I'm also using them on my disciples to make the Elite Bodyguard units stand out.

The infantry squads. Again, I've tinkered with these guys a bit since I took these pictures, equiping the Sarges with sniper Rifles and making on of the squads a new plasma gun made out of a Chaos Plasma Pistol and a Lasgun. I should have some new pictures soon so you'll be able to see the squads in their final form

My Autocannon team, showing the urban basing I intend to use for this army.

Again, the heads come from Pig Iron, and as you can see the Rank and file get rather more basic kit...

I was hoping to see someone do a renegade militia army using Pig Iron heads. Did you have to cut them down to make them fit on the cadian torsos? Look forward to seeing them painted!

Aye, they look good. I'm using Militia heads for my own renegade Guard.

I was thinking about using some of those same heads for a traitor force. They look swish. Are your enforcer heads from Pig Iron as well?

It's part of the Renegade Militia head set from Pig Iron. You get six "womble" gas masks and four other rebreather heads on each sprue of ten. I've tried to give officers and Veterans the rebreathers a) to mae them stand out a bit and b) because the gasmasks would be very restrictive of peripheral vision and I honestly can't see a Veteran putting up with that for long...

Actually, the fit on very, very easily. Almost as if they were made for them...

Yes they are, they're Kolony Inner Guard heads. Initially I bought a big bag with a single sprue of each of Pig Iron's head ranges in it and I was quite taken with them. I think they look quite sinister, don't you?

Great start on what looks like a potentially fun and characterful army. I like the background fluff a lot, and look forward to following your progress.

No Malcador? Seems as though one would fit in nicely.

    Nice conversions!
I like the colour scheme, but then again my Renegades and Heretics are done the same way . I like the use of alternate heads, they definitely make them far more sinister looking.

    Umm maybe...

I've got four Leman Russ' and a squadron of Stalk Tanks to go with these boys as well. I was thinking I might put together a Renegade Armoured Company to go with them and having a pair of Malcadors as the centrepiece...

In order to make the army look a bit less "Blood Pacty" I've come up with a camoflage scheme for the armies fatigues. It basically requires me to put Snakebite Leather, olive green and black splodges over the Scab red base. It's inspired by a kids camoflaged parka I saw in town today and I've tried a couple of test models to see how it looks. Pictures as soon as they've dried.

Everything is looking great. I especially like your choice in heads, and also the heavy weapon bases. Can't wait to see the test camo scheme.

Very nice getz. You dont see enough chaos / renegade guard armies out there. One thing i do like about the guard codex is that nothing in it explicitely makes one scream, "for the emperor!" You can make a fluffy chaos guard army just as well. And quite frankly, with far superior conversion possibilities.

Good job there. I look forward to seeing more.
