    Imperial Guard Doctrines...

Just wanted to post some ideas for different Guard doctrines, wondering if anyone had any others they wanted to add? The Codex says loads more were being worked on but I haven't seen much beyond drop troops

I wanted to theme my valhallans as ww2 russian infantry so came up with the following Massed Infantry doctrine for friendly games:

    Massed Infantry:
Guard Infantry platoons are deployed en-masse in the same way as a conscript platoon, including the command squad. They have the same weapon options as conscripts, do not include sergeants and may not use any other doctrines particular to the platoon (ie shapshoters) the focus being on quantity - not quality.

Also Seems a shame this codex dropped the all Rough Rider army option even tho they're pretty expensive these days:
    Rough Rider Company:
May take rough rider Squads as troops - command HQ must be mounted at +5 pts per model. Cannot be used with heavy weapons platoons.

    Rapid Infantry:
Trained to use speed to outflank - guard infantry units may fleet of foot if they do not fire for +10 pts per unit. Cannot be used with carapace.

    Snipers:
You may take 1-3 snipers as a single elite choice as per the catachan codex. Snipers are 20 pts each; infiltrate, get +1 to their cover save and re-roll
failed wounds but may not move once deployed.

    any more?

Would you paint and collect that many models though? I can't imagine anybody doing it, and the tactics are extremely limited. You can already mass a fair few guardsmen so I don't see the need.

Also Seems a shame this codex dropped the all Rough Rider army option even tho they're pretty expensive these days:
    Rough Rider Company:
May take rough rider Squads as troops - command HQ must be mounted at +5 pts per model. Cannot be used with heavy weapons platoons.
I can forgive the background for using horses on rough riders, as specialised counter assault cavalry attached to IG companies, but the idea of an army of rough riders is absurd. There is no chance of coming up with a reason why they should ever beat any army out there that uses guns. It is absurd, this universe is not the middle ages, most infantry are armed with fast firing guns, cacalry stopped being used for a reason.

    Rapid Infantry:
Trained to use speed to outflank - guard infantry units may fleet of foot if they do not fire for +10 pts per unit. Cannot be used with carapace.
Its makes them like eldar for no good reason. Imperial guard use chimeras to do such things, infiltrate is a better special rule that is already applied to light infantry.

    Snipers:
You may take 1-3 snipers as a single elite choice as per the catachan codex. Snipers are 20 pts each; infiltrate, get +1 to their cover save and re-roll
failed wounds but may not move once deployed.
Basically move that unit from the catahcan codex to main codex, this is not such a bad idea but makes the special weapons squad somewhat redundant in that respect.

Overall I don't think they really add much to the army, but I suppose if you were intent on recreating an army from that era they would be a good start.

No need for name calling. Ideas are put out for discussion, not insults. Just because an idea represents a different way doesn't make it stupid, or anything else for that matter.

I don't use anything based on a Leman Russ in my IG list and Russ players don't call my list *stupid*, or anything else for that matter. We're too busy playing the game and having fun to be bothered insulting each other.

You may wish to edit that comment.

The all Rough Rider Company sounds charming for me. Well I don't like The models so I would propably use converted Space Marine Bikes like the ones Getz build here. They are simply damn great.
For massed infantry I don't know. Don't Valhallans have the Conscript Restricted Troop Choice?
Snipers is cool, but as far as I know you can ad them as Deathworld Veterans from Codex Catachan. but I'm not to sure about that.
The Rapid Infantry. well I think it would not ruin the Balance but should be a bit more expensive double the Costs and noone should complain about it.

After all Folks it's just a game and if it brings flavour into it without destroying the Balance go for it!

    Re: Imperial Guard Doctrines...

Rough Rider Companies sound fun, and theres plenty of fluff reasons for fielding them . Massed Infantry seems to be a little odd, but if its in a forces fluff, not all doctrines should make an army 'better' . Snipers should have been in the main codex anyway . The only thing i'm against is rapid infantry as this replicates the Gland Warriors abhuman doctrine without the disadvantage, also this would indicate according to the rules/background you need to significantly augment the human body to make it capable of running at such speeds .

Heres some other doctrines from the warseer forums,

    Mobile Infantry
Allowing Sentinels to be attached to Infantry squads, or allowing Sentenel Squadrons to be part of Infantry Platoons .
    http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2515

    Tank Riders
Allows vehicles to purchase hand rails that allow an Infantry Squad to ride on them .
    http://www.warseer.com/forums/showth...ht=tank+riders

I'm sure there used to be a long thread about this, but i can't turn it up in the search .

Colhodg Tank riders would definitely be an asset to your WWII Russian Army.

    Re: Imperial Guard Doctrines...

Rough Rider armies could be explained as lo-tech reconnaissance cavalry companies. They'd do it in Chimeras if they had them, and they've got an abundance of horses on the planet. Bingo presto, a fluffy army.

As for the others, well... the Conscripts, Mechanized and Special Weapon Doctrines cover those.

    And more ideas?

I'd definitely like to see a Forgeworld Termite tunnelling vehicle [it's the tiny one] so we could have proper Tunneller Companies. I'd guess it would be an Av11/10/10 vehicle with a single Heavy Bolter [I'd throw a Coax Grenade Launcher in too, just to match Epic], and Transport 10 infantry and be an option for every unit that has access to a Chimera. It would enter the table every turn using the Deep Strike rules, but would be available every turn, even the first. As for the Transporter, it wouldn't be much use during the game but would be a neat support vehicle like the Atlas or Trojan.

I'd also like Mole and Hellbore Companies but that's a bit excessive for average 40k gaming. One can dream, I guess...

I think a good idea for massed infantry could be making all infantry/heavy weapon/armoured fist/command squads cost an extra -2 points per guy and reduce thier stats to match conscripts. So, basically, an army of conscripts.

    Re: Imperial Guard Doctrines...

One Doctrine I have always wanted is "Hell Guns" - the ability to equip all infantry squads with Hell guns reflecting an industrialised world or allowing the player to build a Storm trooper list. Cost 1 or 2 points a model?

Or Regimental Organisation - Storm Trooper Brigade - all choices gain the same stats as a storm trooper (Carapace Armor + Hell gun + Frag) cost 4 or 5 points a model?

    Storm Trooper armies?

Are the Grenadiers, Carapace Armour, and Sharpshooters Doctrines insufficient for you?

Bring back the good ol' Rough Rider armies. Then I can make them the Rough Rider army from hell with all those special doctrines with the beasties and stuff. Now that would be sweet. Why'd GW get rid of the Rough Riders army though?

I'd guess that they didn't plan on making lots of money releasing Doctrines for an army whose only existing models are decade old Mongolians with Laspistols. Spend 1850pts [or $400+] on that? No thanks.

Here's one I've posted around before-

Skills & Drills - Field Medics
The regiment has an unusually high number of trained medical staff within it's ranks.
Any squad in an infantry platoon may upgrade one of its members (not a sergeant, comm operator, specialist or heavy weapon crew member) to a Field Medic at +5pts. The Field Medic is equipped with a Medikit.

    Re: Imperial Guard Doctrines...

I support the Rough Rider doctrines (or a seperate list similar to the Armored Company)! Cavalry is still used today. In fact, in Afghanistan it was used. There are someplaces a chimera just can not go.

I love the idea of the Tunneler's as well. Similar to a deep striking Chimera.

I also back the field Medics.

I think Guard should have the option to take Rhino's or Land Crawlers instead of Chimeras. I know some think it is useless, but the Rhino is suppose to be one of the most common vehicles in the galaxy!

A shotgun doctrine. Again some people think it is useless, but it's about the flavor.

Some form of Bombardment- Perhaps Pre-liminary Bombardment. Seems fluffy for IG to soft up an opponent with artillery before a battle.

    Sadly, no.

Space Marine background material is amongst the most common, but that doesn't mean that the actual Marines are. There are only 1000 Chapters, plus some assorted SoB and Inq forces with Rhinos. Hardly the most common in the galaxy. Even IG Chimeras (IG being far, far more common than Marines) are considered fairly rare *overall*.

    Re: Imperial Guard Doctrines...

Actually, the Rhino used to be the most common vehicle in the Imperium. At least until the Horus Heresy, when the High Lords dictated that it was for Marines only and the Imperial Guard had to give all of theirs up and replace them with Chimerae.

    Re: Imperial Guard Doctrines...

Let me clarify somewhat... The Rhino vehicle is Marine only and hence rare. The STC that forms the basis of the Rhino is the equivalent of a tractor and the most common vehicle STC in the Galaxy.

Perhaps some more terrain related Doctrines could be created.
