    Re: mrtn's Southlands Beastmen (and more)

    @E-Dog, now you can see it, now it's finished. ;-)

    @truthsayer: Thanks. The colours can be a bit difficult to describe, as half of them are OOP Humbrol Fantasy colours, but here goes: First a dark brown wall paint, then a brown Vallejo Game Color Earth, then a HF beige (5063), HF light grey (5064), VGC Bone White. All these dry brushed on quite sloppily, so some places have more grey, some more beige.

    @BarryBobby and aaglo: thanks friends.

    @ZeroTwentythree: It's not a coincidence that the red and yellow goes through both parts of the army. :-) Thanks.

    In other news, I've finally finish some new stuff. The whole knight unit is finished, including an OOP guy with a lance, and also a converted drummer. I couldn't have a musician with a horn and a full face helmet, that's just stupid.
    As they are so dark I couldn't get a shot without flash, so you'll have to make do.

    I've also finished two minotaurs. One of them is female, nice to get some gender diversity in the herd. She would also work great as a mino sorcerer, if that was available.

    Great knights! I kinda the feel the muted, dark colours gives them I really like how one of them has a lance. The symbol on the banners is cool too

    And those minotaurs are nice too. Nice painting ^^ That's a good female minotaur model methinks. Good thing that they didn't try to make her a sexy ... cow.. with silicon tits :P

    I like them. Keep it up

    Nice stuff man. Dig the drum conversion, and the "old guy" fits in nicely. Minotaurs are nice too, what company are they from.

    Brilliant mate. That herdstone is awesome, very characterful.

    You have inspired me to want to do a Herd army from the Southlands (though it may not see actual fruition for a few years).

    Thanks friends!

    @Anardakil: So a chainmail bikini isn't sexy enough for you?

    @E-Dog: The drum is from the saurus sprue, the beater as well. The minos are from Ral Partha, at the bottom of the page. They're dirt cheap as well, £2.50 each (compared to the £12 GW want for their ugly pigotaurs). The next thing I'll paint is their chaos monks.

    @Mousekiller: Looking forward to it.

    Re: mrtn's Southlands Beastmen (and more)

    Looking good, as for the Herdstone, may I give a suggestion as to how to do the markings?

    Since it's done in Pink Foam, it's rather susceptible to preasure, sculpt some raised dino-footprints or similar on the end of sticks or on a base and push them into the model, you might have to repaint that area once done. What you will get however will be a raised wall with dino footprints on it, something I think the beastmen would rever a lot more than a mere big stone. I mean, they'd see it as a Stairway to Heaven (song refference... intentional).

    Also, you don't have to do something big for your markings, I think one red line just kind-of horizontally (you know, not really horizontally, but leaning up or down or being bent or something)would do well over an area of the herdstone, do it with much water so that it runns. You can then mark victories on that line by drawing new lines on it untill you have some sinister rainbow/spine of dried blood.

    Add in some small cavepaintings near the bottom of it and I think you're set, you don't really need runes you know. I'll see if I can throw that pic of yours through a quick Paint-session and see if I can show what I mean

    Re: mrtn's Southlands Beastmen (and more)

    @Neknoh: Thanks. However, I posted up that herdstone as "finished", so I doubt that I'll make any markings. Maybe sometime in the future...

    @redyellowpinkgreen: Thanks. GWs policy on other minis remains unchanged AFAIK, but I couldn't care less about that.

    @Morglum: Thanks.

    I bought an old forest on the cheap, and have fixed it up for gaming by basing the trees on big 40K bases and made a big base to put some of the trees on. They are just standing there, so you can remove them if they're in the way when you play.

    I love those Chaos Knights, almost as much as I love the Herdstone (and I really, really love that Herdstone). That is a great idea with the Forest as well, and the way it is executed helps the trees blend in with the base. Good job!

    I'm hoping to stay motivated to finish painting an army, or three.... (Update: 10/1/09!)

    That herdstone is excellent mrtn, the skeletal remains are perfect. Good to see progress being made with your minis too. The knights look lovely and gory!

    For those of us that don't actually read posts, but only look at the pictures this will remain an enema enigma. Everyone else can follow the link in post #46.

    Sairion and Nephilim (and Harry ) thanks for your kind words.

    Your beastmen look great mrtn, very striking colour scheme. I also really like the characterful terrain you've made to go with your models, do you have a group shot of the figures and the scenery all together?

    Knights are excellent, especially the conversion on the musician. It always bugged me as to how the musician could blow the horn through all that armour, but you've solved that problem neatley.

    Re: mrtn's Southlands Beastmen (and more)

    Ooh, lots of nice new stuff.

    The herdstone looks really impressive. Good job. Is that a real rock or did you cut it? I think that marks or carvings would make it look even more....."in with the theme".

    The chaos knights look very cool in red. I think they would look even better with a little more definition like a bit of blacklining, stronger highlights and such. Just a suggestion if you happen to have the time. But they look good as they are now too. Good convertion on the musician. I agree with richy376; horns on Chaos Warriors who wear those enclosed helmets always looks a bit weird.

    The minotaurs look nice; I think I never saw a female Minotaur before.

    Nice forest too. Removable trees are very handy for gaming. The the single skeleton arm amused me because there seem to be quite a lot of hills, forests and other generic terrain pieces which have that single arm on them.

    Re: mrtn's Southlands Beastmen (and more)

    Richy, sigur, thanks.
    Sigur, as to the skeletal arm, what can I say? "Yes Brian, we're all individuals!"
    I haven't tried black lining, we'll see if I can get up the courage for that...

    I painted up those chaos dwarves I converted:

    I've also started on my cultists. With the new rumours about cultists for mortals I'm not sure what direction the unit should go (change them to GW or flails(less likely), or keep them as marauders with HW and shield), but as it's very random it could be almost anything. I'll work on my "OOP beastmen as marauders with LA, HW and shield" unit in the mean time, until we know more.

    Edit: These will all get static grass, and the "chaos bishop" will maybe get a shield.

    Thanks Reik.
    Yes, another update! This is a couple of resin "Barbarian Huts" I got cheap. They were a blast to paint, and it went very fast.

    They should fit my herdstone well, even though they're a tad small. I'll brush off the excess static grass, but other than that they're finished.

    These huts are looking really cool! I love them.
    Your Beastmen are very cool, too. Have you thought about adding some feathers and other totems, making them a little Voodoo? I think that would look quite awesome and fit your Southlands theme (which I think is fantstic!).

    Cheers,
