Thread: The Tales of The Old West Painters.

    Re: The Tales of The Old West Painters.

    @Count Sinister.
    Bless you. I remember that frustration when I first started trying to post pics.
    All you can do with the warseer set up is add thumbnails as you have. which works.
    The only way I was able to drop pics in to a post as I have was to open a photobucket account, then having uploaded my pics, edit them to 'message board' then simply drag the 'IMG code' directly into the post. Job done.

    "Touch the sky" is not my name. When foundry originally produced this range they gave them names. Thats what they called him.

    The pinning does sound a fiddle. I had decided to do it this way to give the foundry minis a bit more hieght to catch up with the Artizan minis. Now I just need to find a way to reduce the hieght of the black Scorpion guys and I'm laughing.

    @Knightmare
    I bought those guys too. I couldn't resist the 'dusters'.

    knitemare - how do you get the pictures into the post like that? I'm really struggling. I click on 'insert picture', and it asks for the URL. Cutting and pasting doesn't work either.
    And speaking of pictures, those minis are nice. Very nice. The guy on the right, running and shooting his pistol from the shoulder, is particularly cool.
    And JonesRob - thank you. Strangely, I had been thinking of using the Tale to test that out (adding bones and greys to the basecoat, rather than white, in order to build up the highlights). Looking forward to trying it now!
    Oh, and on the off-chance that any of you have picked up/are thinking of picking up any Dixon's minis for the Tale, a word of warning. While they are nicely detailed sculpts, some of the scaling is strange. My upstanding citizen (the cardsharp), for example, had incredibly short legs. I had to cut him off at the knees, and then pin his legs together again leaving a good 5mm of gap (with paper-clip armature) in order to build up the legs with green stuff and make him look relatively normal. Question: did this actually work, or does he still look odd?
    [Edit]: thank you, Harry! Ok, that makes some sense. Thumbnails for the moment, until I sort out a photobucket account, then. Cheers!

    I guess other photo hosting accounts work the same but I KNOW this works with photobucket and I can walk you through it if you have any more problems.

    Thanks, Harry. I have a Picasa account (well, my wife does), and I suppose it must work in a similar way to that. I cut and pasted the URL into the post, but all that seemed to do was create a link to the Picasa page, so I have an idea that I'm missing a few steps. Good thinking, by the way, on using the metal bases of the Foundry models to raise them up a bit to match the height of the Artizan minis. Like you say, though, it's something else again to get the Black Scorpion ones right - they're beautiful minis, but they sure are tall!

    I know nothing about Picasa but Photobucket has an email code, a direct link, an HTML code and an IMG code. (under each uploaded photo) Only the last one does the trick. I am not sure what the others do. Once I got it to do what I wanted I stopped playing.

    Hi

    A bit of Progress on the Sergeant - nothing too fancy, just slowly building up the paintjob.

    Now you see all the flakes better, but believe me, it is not as visible in RL.

    BTW, I will not do anything with the bases yet, until I have decided on the kind of bases I want (desert, grassy plains, town and mus, etc.)

    Very nice job, Festus. You're right to hold off on the bases as well, if for no other reason than because it would be great to make the most of those bases, as you've got lots of room to go to town on them. Looking forward to seeing them!
    And Harry - thank you again. I'll try dragging the picture up from the Warseer message board, once I've uploaded it. I'm guessing that's what you mean, and will try it anyway and see what happens!

    Howdy guys,

    @Malarick - our group have just found the Whitewash buildings - are they any good?
    @Lardidar - looking forward to seeing the Mexicans!
    @Harry - how do you find the time to do all of this!!!!
    @JonesRob - stunning, simply stunning. Can't wait to see the rest of them!
    @CountSinister - he is a Preacher Man, dispensing his own type of justice... Convert or both barrels...
    @Festus - looking good - what made you pick the big scale?

    Now onto the serious stuff - can anybody give me any tips for painting denim? I've stared at the BlackScorpion stuff till I'm cross eyed, but I can't seem to get the gritty blue colour that they have. I have painted my first attempt at denim, but am not completely happy.

    I attach it for your assistance pardners!

    Hey, SuavelyDunn - that denim looks damn good to me. And the face is brilliant! Excellent work. I'm starting to get worried now, the bar has been set so high by everyone who's posted up pictures of painted minis. On the other hand, it's also a good thing, as it's clear that this Tale is going to produce lots of good work!

    Harry - ive been thinking of a formula for the Indian skin tones and i think im going to start with a warm brown and mix in a flesh colour for the highlights. Il prob use Foundry paint palettes Dusky flesh ABC and Flesh ABC. Foundry paints are pricey but great quality.

    SuavelyDunn - Great painting sir. I really like this mini, shame i dont have it for my posse! I know what you mean about the denim, i really struggle with that. If you want it really washed out id go with mixing alot of grey with the blue?

    @JonesRob

    Superb paintjob mate. Inspiring.

    Attached is my own first attempt at a figure (if I've managed to figure the attachment bit out right). More to follow for my outlaw posse.

    Woh! Very nice, Belarus! (in case you were wondering, the sound I was going for there at the beginning was a sound of appreciative surprise - not that I'm surprised at your level of painting, but in general, all of the posts with pictures of painted minis on this Tale have already included some splendid paint jobs. And here's another one. I don't know why they jump out at me, but the trousers and the shirt are fantastic!

    Great work so far guys. An excellent start to a new thread.

    Katinka and I are still waiting for our models. In the mean time we have been discussing designs for terrain. No pics. It's a surprise.

    I love surprises! Looking forward to finding out more as the thread progresses!
    Sorry to ask again, but the guy in the second picture in my post (my vigiliante cardsharp), the one on the left with the greenstuffed legs. I'm worried the proportions might be off, so was hoping for some feedback before I undercoat him and forget I ever chopped him in half!
    Thanks, guys - a great start to a great thread! Thanks to Harry for getting it off the ground, and Rhamag for getting Harry thinking about it!

    @JonesRob - Well bugger .... that sets the bar, very well done mate I love it.

    @Count Sinister - I love the mini's and the sculpting looks good. As for the photos Id grab a photobucket account, from that you simply copy/paste pics.

    @SuavelyDunn & Bellarus - Fantastic, I hope mine come out as good.

    I love the almost washed out colours you get by adding bone to highlight, it is somthing I have planned to do for a while and will deffinatly use it on my lawmen.

    However my mexicans are going to be in the black scorpion red theme because I love it. I hope to be painting by Tuesday next week so ill get some WIP pics then.

    I think they are a great, afordable, way to get a decent looking western town together in no time at all.

    Depending on the size of the models you are painting you may have to scale them up a little, but besides that the variety is excellent.

    If you are thinking of getting some try out the free download and build the Imperial Saloon!

    I have just also ordered the mat to put down on our 6x4 home table, and I am really looking forward to it arriving and combining it with the Whitewash city buildings!

    Check out the mats here!

    Like the avatar, SuavelyDunn - you've inspired me to change my own!
    And Belarus - that is really nice basing on that mini. What sort of colours did you use, and what's the green foliage? It's not lichen, is it? Looks fantastic, and suits the model perfectly!
    Also, Lardidar - thanks. I just wanted to be sure before covering it all up with paint! It might be the first one that I do, in fact.
