The amounts of models per regiment is variable in the game. Personally I think that the lowest amount recommended is too few, but that the higher amounts look good. I'll use 20-25 models per pike block in my army. I like the P&S book, full of eye candy. Haven't tried the rules yet.

@sigur: Wasn't a unit of 500 more common than 1500? In that case the "20 men per model" convention works, and mean that would be a unit of 25 models.

@mrtn: Indeed, and with 25 28mm guys it looks nice (as seen in Wargames Illustrated for example and other display games). From what I read numbers of men in tercios of course varied as well as the ratio of pike to shot changed with times but I think I read that especially early on, tercios were huge (up to 3000 or something of which at least half was pikemen). I'm sure that with time going on the tercios got smaller as well as pikes getting less pivotal in comparison to muskets so I don't think that units of 500 pikemen were unlikely. Still, really large formations.

...and just so this thread doesn't derail completely, here are some pictures of Space Marines.

As for the boring texty bloggy part - today the first two Flythings arrived in the mail and I'll pay the post office a visit lateron, picking up two more flythings. Fliers! Summer of Fliers! Everywhere things that fly!!

At this time we are using 2 units of 10 shooters with 20 pikes per regiment. Cav. is 10 bodies per regiment. We are using Warhammer ECW rules, the rules came out in 2002(?).

Most of the troops, cav. and foot, are plastic, 28mm. The metal minies are 25mm.
I am therefore I think OR I think therefore I am?

The little Fists look great and I am looking forward to seeing some fliers. I am keeping my fingers crossed that one just might be of the Orky variety.

I'll also put your advise to painting red into effect soon. I have a sorcerer that I want painted as a Red Corsair. Thanks for the assist!

Thats ok...i think i have the same...except i dont have a closet for things that might be useful later on....i stuffed most the things i dont use right now under my bed...and this also prevents me pretty much from taking it out...because i cant without first taking off my whole matras...then screwing out two of the bedbottom planks...and i ofcourse have to put it all back else i wont be able to sleep....so that is pretty save there...

thing is i still put a lot of my things that i wanna paint up later ready for some reason...and it makes a big mess out of things...i should probably stop doing that :P

anyway...nice work on the epic models...keep up the good work

@OldSchool: Thanks but damn,I hate the "getting ripped to shreds" part after the army is finished.

@Crazy Harborc: Hmm, that sounds like it could mix, having 25mm cavalry and 28mm infantry...

@Hushrong: Indeed, there's a Bomma amongst the fliers that arrived recently but 3 out of the four are Space Marines and the Bommer is my own so it comes last. Can't make my mind up which variant to build anyway.

@Breazer: Oh well, I guess all Wargamers are like that. Gathering stuff that might come in handy lateron for converting, making terrain and so on.

Very quick update, I should be gone already actually. WIP Squats bikes (to count as SM bikes):

    Crimson Fists Storm Talon:

Hope you like them, the Talon is to get some more chapter markings and whatnot of course. Seeya later!

    Update!

One detachment of Bikes plus an Attack Bike finished! Well, maybe a small detail or two has to be added but overall finished.

Yeah that detail you need to add is a Hell's Angels banner.

@Old School: Oh yes, banners. That's a whole different subject I'm somewhat afraid to touch otherwise this whole Epic force would take MUCH longer to paint all of a sudden.

So let's get back to big, modern Space Marine things - Stormtalon update!

Nicely painted, but I still hate the model.

You've done probably the best job I've seen so far, but to me it will always be the flying potato... sorry

It is indeed a redonkulous monstrosity, but since it's such a great CF paint job, I love it.

@Crube: See, why can't you be as easily appeased as Old School!

@Old School: Cheers, I hope you like the finished thing just as much.

    @Breazer: Thanks!

    Right, finished!
Tons of pictures, just waiting until they're all uploaded.... this will be a two posts one... right, done. (Sorry to those of you with 65k modems )

I did a bit of overtime on the base but given what the rest of the bases of this army look like I didn't really have a choice. It would have looked really unfitting if the base looked any less compolex and I feel like I'm on the lower end of the "exciting scenic base" spectrum anyway. Still, it fits I think. It's not overdone or overpowering. And of course if you got walls, no matter how low, you've got to have some scribbling on them. In this case I was just listening to two people discussing Rocky IV so I put this timeless quote from Ivan Drago on there. Kind of fitting and it works almost as a kind of "title" for the whole model that goes with the theme of the army. There's a messed up Crimson Fists helmet on the base of course and a bunch of assault cannon shells because these things always drop shells everywhere.

Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

    [...]

I was asked by the client to magnetize the weapon options which isn't too hard on this model with the missiles but is much more tricky with the lascannons/heavy bolters. I managed though and I was kind of proud when it worked.

Now for the cockpit. Really nice stuff and I wanted to make it look like this guy has been flying missions across Rynn City basically around the clock so the canopy would look pretty messed up. The glass is scratched, there are bullet holes in it (no more low orbit flights but why would he) and dust and dirt gathered especially around the frames of the canopy. With all that stuff going on I'm a bit bummed that you can't see all the detail in the cockpit and on the pilot any more but anyway. It probably would make me more uneasy if I knew that there was unpainted stuff in the cockpit even if you couldn't see it well or notice.

So that's that. Fun model to build. I know that it's not to everybody's taste but in terms of building it's really easy. For some reason I got the idea that this model would get some variants in the future given how it's built in a kind of modular way but I might be wrong there. One thing I noticed about the Storm Talon kit is that the way you change the angle of the engines doesn't work quite as GW intended. From looking at pictures I thought it would work like on the Tau vehicles where each engine has this sort of bayonet way of connecting like turrets on tank model kits and such (the underslung assault cannon sponson is connected in that way). Instead they are connected by an axle going through the chassis. The thing is though that either the connection or the axle itselt isn't strong enough so if you change the angle on one engine the other one just stays in place so you have to twist them both at the same time. No biggie, it just doesn't seem to work the way it's intended. I got two Storm Talons here (one built by me, the other one, coming up soon, built by someone else and I just got it for painting) and it's the same on both. Interesting.

Well, at least to a few of us. :embarassed: Anyhoo, hope you like the paintjob and model (or just the paintjob) and the base of course, comments and critique make me happy. Thank Judas Priest (thanks for that expression, Breazer ) the weather is less hot now so I can get more stuff done again. Have a good weekend!

edit: Errr, so I made this combined shot of the second batch of the Crimson Fists army. Note for later: One squad, four characters and a small flier don't warrant an "army shot".

Nah, it looks alright but it doesn't really look like an epic army of course.

    Good lad, lotsa epic

But in all honesty, that Storm Talon is so fantastic the epic update is overshadowed! I`ve heard the the new flyer kits are really nice to assemble but how is it to paint? Huge kit and all, airbrush or "manual"?

Haha you are welcome Sigur....always glad to help out...you know me...
and great work on the talon...i dont get what the hate is against the model...i mean...the tanks are also just boxes with tracks...but they seem to be ok for everyone...
i just think it needs some getting used to..besides...lots of people did seem to like the stormraven...
anyway i love the way you did this...and when i see it on the table it seems even stronger in colours...the red contrasts beautifully...
and the base...is that a small hint towards gears of war there?...if it is or not...it looks impressive...it is that i like painting a lot myself else i would definitly get an army like this from you once
