Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

@Hushrong: Many thanks. OF COURSE the blood splatterings in his face is a reference to Kiefer Sutherland's character in Young Guns (or Young Guns 2 maybe). Glad you like the effect. I had to splatter up the whole figure with blood any whatnot and the first thing that came to mind was having some blood splattered across his facemask. Also note how there is a little string or trail of blood/gore running between the top of his khorne symbol on the helmet. You can see it in picture #3 from the top.

@Red Skullz: Thanks very much. I will indeed paint some OOP stuff again. Maybe one weekend I'll sit down and paint an Ork or two. Oh, and there's always WAY OOP stuff I do in 6mm scale of course.

Moving on quickly, here's a WIP shot of the World Eaters Land Raider with FW doors and front hatch:

The real thing looks a bit less orange and a bit more deep red but I'm a wizard with the camera in that pictures often come out completely different. Nah, it's okay, it was very late when I took the picture so I probably was lazy with lighting. Anyway, hope you like it so far. C&C welcome! See you soon!

@mrtn: Cheers. The Forgeworld Berzerker upgrade kit is a very, very nice one.

@Bob Hunk: Thank you. The CF army is indeed a pretty one. The mix of armour and equipment variants, the iconic look and all that go really nicely together.

@tancrede: Merci beaucoup á toi pour rendre un visite (and I really hope that this was at least somehow discernable). Thanks, I'll try to carry on. ;-)

Since I got on with commission stuff pretty well the past days I thought I'd quickly paint up somthing for myself:

(Look Red Skullz, it's all OOP minis! ) Not particularly proud of those and the paintjob is as basic as can be but at leasst they're painted. At this point I really don't know much about what I'm doing. The tactical marines are meant to fill up my second tactical detachment, the Squat Thunderers will be proxies for Devastators (or for god knows what in games of Tomorrow's War). I guess I'll paint some Rhinos next and look what I can score on ebay for cheap. Infantrywise I'm set. What I don't have in SM minis I'll proxy with Squats (bikes for example, maybe berserkers as assault marines. I'll have to see) but vehicles are a bit more tricky. I got a bunch of Land Raiders and Rhinos but the rest - nada. The thing that concerns me the most is Thunderhawks, Landing Crafts and so on. Oh well, I'll see. Errr, I'm sure you won't be impressed with these tiny buggers but at least it's more finished stuff, right?

I promise though that the next update will have more finished 28mm stuff painted in many a-colours!

Great looking stuff. Could I bother you and ask about how you achieved that red on the land raider? There are some things I have that I would love painted with that tone because its ace!

Of course you did. I just thought that the image of sigur strapped to a pain-station slaving away was funny, and probably close to reality.

Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

@Hushrong: Thanks very much. Beware the treachery of bad photography though. Somehow the red turned out a bit weird in this WIP shot. The real thing is much more of a deep red. I'll post pictuires of the finished thing soon. As for how to get nice, deep red: Multiple Layers I'd say. Even if the thing doesn't look all that greatly red basecoated just wait until the first contrasting colours are on there. They make the red pop.

    @mrtn: Well, thanks.

@Breazer: Well, you gotta keep your painstation clean. In all honesty though, I think I have the messiest painting desk in the world. Usually it's to three quarters filled with "Stuff that might come in handy soon" (and that's only kept there because my closet of "stuff that might come in handy lateron" is filled to the brim.) or "stuff I need regularly like small sponges, conversion bits of various sources, glues, pinning stuff and so on so my actual workspace is a tiny fraction of my desk. Tidied it up to showcase my shame.

@kublai: Cheers, I'm glad that you appreciate the 6mm stuff. I have to say that lately I've been getting into the smaller scales. It's just so handy.

@Demoulius: Thank you! Well, the Squats in the right, as per tradition, don't have much of a lower body. The Marines are a tiny bit covered I'm afraid but it's not as bad as it looks in the picture due to the angle of the shot.

@anselminus: Oh, thanks for the picture. Looking nice. So it's Evil Sunz versus Evil Sunz? Not unlikely fluffwise. It's always nice to see models I painted again.

Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

@anselminus: Hehe, looks like you had a good game.

@Red Skullz: Oop-Oop! That's the sound of da police! Ooh, AI, nice. Those are some really pretty models. When I first did some of those I was surprised how big they were. Are you planning to get a Bomma too? Very fun models.

Alright, after a very nice night of celebration it's even hotter than yesterday so I actually didn't get too much done but there you go:

Again minis for myself. :S (making pretty good time on a BB team though over in my Fantasy Plog) And again OOP! Yesterday I went to my FLGS and see what things were like there. Hadn't paid a visit in a while. I actually spent a bit more tan I had planned (I know, shock horror, right? ): Got the Deathwing expansion for Death Angel (supercool game. If you don't have Space Hulk, Death Angel is a pretty inventive way to make a game that works very differently, yet feels very appropriate). That should be good. Had a quick look through the new Marines and they don't look overpowered at first glance, which was my main concern. Another thing I got was a back issue of Wargames Illustrated which I don't buy regularly but this one's got a fair amount of stuff on Gustav Adolphus and the Thirty Years War in general so I had to get it. And last but not least I asked the guy at the store if they had any old or second hand Epic stuff and here's the thing I love about my FLGS - they got two large drawers full of that stuff. Just amazing things in there. Nothing too exciting in the ways of metals but if it's plastics you need they got tons of those, most on sprues along with a bunch of built stuff. Anyhow, I got the Detachment of Terminators with a Captain and the two Dreads you see above. Not too much and very resaonably priced.

Terminators are basically finished, Dreads not quite yet as you can see. I also got 8 more Rhinos in the works. Speaking of which - I'm spending way too much time with painting these 6mm models. I don't dare to say how many layers of blue there is on the Terminators. Still, it doesn't look too impressive this close up but they should look really nice on the table. And hey, it's Terminators, they have to look nice. See why I opted to go for Space Marines in Epic? Which is kind of against my nature because I very much enjoy the look of massed infantry and basically an IG guy at heart. Anyway, it this point I'm babbling. Seeya later!

Very nice ! Especially the free hand flag.

Will you buy the Pike & Shotta rulebook by warlod games ? I want to buy it, but Im not sure about the visiual appeal. I have heard that the models per regiment ratio is very low.

Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

Thanks for the comment, kublai. I ordered the P&S rulebook about two weeks ago, it should arrive this week. Then I'll take a closer look at what actually to do with it. At the moment I'm really at a loss about it to be honest. I had to notice that around my area (or in the whole country) nobody plays by the P&S ruleset (people here prefer FoG it seems), nobody plays Thirty Years War (which, for what reason ever, is a very niche thing in wargaming) and nobody plays 10mm, the scale I would have chosen.

This is the thing you mentioned yourself: if you use the Warlord models - which are great. Take a look at mrtn's Thirty Years War plog for some more pictures on those - but TYW, in my mind, requires masss armies. I mean those were huge. The actual number of models per unit doesn't matter in P&S, it's all about the frontage really. Still, you can only get so many 28mm figures on a base of that size so units look just "wrong" to me. I mean they used units of say 1500 pikemen with smaller bunches of musketeers around. In P&S games of 28mm scale this may be represented by say 20 pikemen models. It looks nice because the models are really good but I think that for such a game I would prefer a smaller scale personally.

And here's the kicker: As I said above, no TYW around here, all 28mm around here (with some people playing 15mm. Again, great models, more in the way of how I'd prefer it but then it's still pretty big for individual guys PLUS pricing-wise they're hardly any cheaper than the plastics Warlord sell). Some people play 28mm English Civil War which I could sneak into with a 28mm TYW army without much trouble but the problem of scale remains.

So I'm waiting for the book (as well as "2nd Austrian Salute") and make up my mind then. Maybe I'll even just dismiss all social aspects, choose the path of the loner and go for something like 10mm Battle of Vienna (Imperial Habsburgs, Poles, Ottomans).
