Thread: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

    Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

    No doubt the painting is superb, but for me the weathering you have carried out is the bit that really catches my attention.

    The dark around the engine outputs, and chipped metal work, and MOST IMPRESSIVE... the chips and bullet holes in the screen.

    Love it Sigs... but then... other than the 'potato' comment... who doesnt!

    Hey sigur- really really impressed with the Storm Talon- it looks fantastic - the layered tones on the armour, the weathering, the details on the base .. just draw dropping.
    My random painting log- 3/3/2013 now painting winter VC- black knights.

    Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

    @Red Skullz: Thanks. I did use my airbrush on that as well, yeah, but didn't do anything special. In terms of size I wouldn't say it's too big - about the size of a Rhino I reckon, but quite a bit more complex to paint of course.

    @Breazer: Thanks very much. The main point of critique is, as far as I heard, that the thing doesn't look like it would fly at all and that it's too short and bulky. I don't know. If you ask me, it looks kind of fun. The only thing I'm not awfully fond of is the overbearing number of big guns. SM tanks aren't visually pretty but they have this primitive charm you can also find in an Mk.IV. A Rhino looks like it could work, the Space Marines fliers look a bit problematic in this regard. I don't necessarily agree but there you go.

    @Rogerio: Thanks very much! It's a nice kit to work with.

    @gonzosbignose: Hey, thanks for dropping by again and leaving a comment. Took me a second or two to overcome my reservations about hacking away at this very rare and hard-to-replace clear plastic part but it did work out pretty nicely.

    @silverstu: Hi silverstu, long time no see! Thanks for commenting and the compliment.

    Right, I've run out of latex gloves so I couldn't really proceed on the Space Marines today. I also really wasn't in shape for getting anything done today. I would say that I was about 20% hungover, 80% tired, and all that for most of the day. As soon as I had regenerated I did a bit of work on that Dark Elves Blood Bowl team I'm currently working on and painted a detachment of Squat Warriors for my Epic army (counting as Space Marines Scouts). Nothing too interesting in itself but the army is growing:

    It's a kind of pretty sight, isn't it.

    Really nice pic there I actually went browsing through my backlog of WDs yesterday and found the period when Epic was released in the 90s. Fun stuff!

    Ok that sounds fair...but then again...if you wanna look at it that way...i think the whole concept of space marines is a bit over the top...and a weird airplane would go too far....naaahh..
    i do like the stormraven better though

    Even sweating away on vacation I can't help dropping by to admire your work. That flyer is fantastic! It fits the rest of the army great and the weathering is superb...(isn't it always...). I couldn't get the second post of pics and the army shot to work, but that might be the computer I'm on? Anyways- superduperschmuper work pal.

    Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

    @Red Skullz: Thanks very much. I don't have all that many old WDs, mostly because I only got the German ones for which publishing didn't start until like the mid-1990s plus the occasional English back issue but I do have some of the ones that were released around the time Epic40k came out. Good stuff indeed.

    @kublai: Cheers!

    @Breazer: I absolutely agree. This is why I mostly stopped discussing 40k on many levels in the past years. Stuff just doesn't make much sense in 40k. It's Space Fantasy. The background varies HUGELY in tone and on several other levels and after years of getting worked up and angry at "people who just wouldn't get it" ( ) I realized that 40k really is about picking out what you like and leave stuff you don't enjoy that much uncommented. 40k's background and design is inconsistent and everybody's got their own view of the universe and what they enjoy about it. At times I let myself get tempted to comment on such stuff but yeah, you're right. It all doesn't make much sense. I think that this is one of 40k's biggest strengths though - due to the fact how everything is surprisingly undefined compared to how much is getting published there is certain kind of mass appeal to the universe.

    @Samurai33: Thanks for dropping by. I hope that you have a good time while elsewhere in the world it won't stop raining. Glad you like the models. Some of the pictures wouldn't work for me either from time to time but a Ctrl-F5 usually fixes things.

    Right, I'm in full Salamanders mode now. Expect some nice picture updates soon with a superduperschmuper squad of Sternguard! At this point they're all just basecoated really and not too spectacular to look at but just you wait.

    On a side note - if you've got one or several armies for historical wargames lying around, being just another unpainted mountain of lead, ....well, consider Battle Brush Studios. But if you're really dead set on painting the models yourself and you got the time but you need a bit of an infusion of motivation, take a look at the Tale of Historical Painters here on Warseer. It's currently in the sign-up phase and will start shortly with July being the first month if I remember correctly.

    Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

    @mrtn: Thanks.

    Roight, here's what I'm currently working on. I know, the picture quality is pretty rubbish but at this point there isn't much to see yet anyway, it's more or less just a piece of proof that SOMETHING is getting done.

    Actually, it's a really nice batch. The infantry is a very nice mix of minis, three smal units, and one tank. Really nice to paint but I just realized that it's been a while since I last painted some Salamanders. They also get a flything lateron but I'll do that seperately. Next update will be a bit prettier (at least I hope so). See you then!

    Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

    This is looking interesting....and to get back to the 40k thing...indeed...also next to the imperial aspect of the universe the other races come at it from completely different angles...giving everyone something to love....and if you dont love it yet...its often just a matter of time before you read some fluff....start liking things coming alive on your table and going home with a big bag of new plastics.....thats how i got reeled in....just going through a summary of the horus heresy and i was hooked...i imidiatly saw why marines were cool
    that brings us back to your next update...curious to see them develop as usual...

    Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

    @Breazer: I absolutely agree and thanks for commenting once again.

    Right, today wasn't as productive as I had planned. Stuff just wouldn't work out, distracting crap happening and to top it all off, my camera goes batshit insane when I take pictures of green marines. No idea what I'm doing wrong but I'll fix it.

    For now, here's two of three crappy pictures I took:

    The Terminators are the farthest of the bunch so I guess I'll switch to painting the squads as single units from now on (even my wording is even more off than usual) so I get done with them. After that it's probably the Sternguard vets and then the Devastators (I usually save highlighting black for last becaue I can't stand it and these guys got huge gun casings). There are also a bunch of freehand flames to add to the heavy weapons. That should look cool and it's sad how there's nothing in the way of that kind of stuff on heavy weapons nowydays. Oh well, not my business. Righto, better update tomorrow i hope. Seeya!

    Some times I miss the old days when damn near any heavy weapon was liable to have some flame decals painted on it. Apparently Space Marines aren't into hot rods anymore.

    Yeah, instead they seem to like to paint their armour in washed-out mono-colour lately. Mainly referring to the Minotaurs there. The change in colour scheme almost annoys me more than the name change on the Space Sharks.

    Fantastic work, the World Eaters are inspiring and I will be looking back at these when the new codex comes out. The CF are great and the storm talon is the best example I have seen. The Salamanders are looking amazing too, they seem to be one of those chapters that people can very easy make look bad, but your paint job is superb. Having seen the flames you painted on the Orks I'm surprised the client didn't want more flames added to the Salamanders.

    Sigs... looking lovely...

    The helmets in my humble opinion are a bit muted in terms of the vibrant green colour. But overall you cant be upset at all. Regardless of camera issues, these are still a cut above the rest.

    Re: Battle Brush Studios Commission Log .... In Space!

    @spekkiebig: Cheers, the client chose really pretty models for them.

    @ChrisMurray: Heheh, well, the flames on the Salamanders and the ones on the Orks are kind of different but thanks. Something tells me that he wants more flames on the Salamanders anyway.

    @Sinestro: I think you may have a point there. Wait a second, I'll add some more flames...

    @gonzosbignose: Hey Daniel, thanks for the comment. I think that the helmets stick out a bit better now. I think my ****** lighting is the reason my camera messes up the greens like that. I'm basically constantly trying to get my lighting better but maybe it's really time to go beyond IKEA and get some some real badass lamps form an arts store. Hope your computer has recovered yet. ;

    Alright ladies and gentlemen, here's a Saturday update!

    Devastators:

    Terminators:

    WIP Sternguard (mainly just the lack of Bolters/combi weapons on some models):

    ...and here' a preview of the extra-flamey Chaplain:

    Right, that's it, I guess I'll return to the guests now. We had delicious, delicious barbecue earlier and a few beers. Good times. Anyhoo, Hope you like the models, hope you excuse the bad pictures again. I really should get a new lamp. Daylight and whatnot. Oh well, Seeya later, peeps!

    edit: Oh right, about the scribbly stuff. The Devastators Sergeant's got something on his boltgun. It says IGNIS CALUI, meaning something like "fire/burn passiotate/inflamed/active/hotly". Probably the most wobbly pigeon latin i ever did but it's good enough for a gun. ;-) The Sternguard Veteran with the surprisingly modern armour aiming his boltgun has got VULKAN on his shoulder pad. Not really creative but fitting. The Terminator Sergeant's name is Tvastar (as his shield says) who was an ancient hindu mythological blacksmith.

    Awesome work. I am especially fond of the sternguard! Even without bolters they look good and proper!
