Tale of 40K Painters: Monthly update #9 and April working thread, innit

SORRY EVERYONE, THE TALE OF 40K PAINTERS IS CANCELLED

    ...

    April fools! Har har.

This is the official thread for those of you who are in the tale to post your monthly updates - same deal as before. Tell us what you did, how much it cost and show us some pretty pictures - feel free to use this post as a template. If what you did was nothing, then post to say hello and include some form of comedic image, if possible. This thread is also for any comments, advice or banter related to the Tale.

For the viewing public, here is a brief explanation of what the Tale is about. If you want an even briefer summary: Basically, it's a way to motivate lazy painters to actually finish an army. Every month, over 12 months, we post 200 points of our chosen force. For two of those months we are allowed to do nothing and play a "joker". That makes 10 months of 200 points a month, for a total of 2000 points. Right now we're on month 9, so everyone should, in week's time, have between 1400 and 1800 points completed.

We lost a couple more armies last month, but there's still 10 of us going - which is pretty good after this long!

Looking forward too seeing what you have to offer!

    Sam (McMullet)

As of the current time, the following painters are enlisted int he Tale of 40K Painters:

    Heldane : Space Marines (Raptors) … 1684 points painted; 0 joker(s) used.
    Jim Reaper : IG … 1201.34 points painted; 2 joker(s) used.
    Marksekay : Imperial Fists … 1240 points painted; 2 joker(s) used.
    McMullet : Tyranids … 1396 points painted; 1 joker(s) used.
    Meticulous : Space Wolves 13th Company … 1260 points painted; 2 joker(s) used.
    Norsehawk : IG … 1146 points painted; 2 joker(s) used.
    penguin663 : Death Guard … 1207 points painted; 2 joker(s) used.
    Silvereye : Eldar … 1319 points painted; 2 joker(s) used.
    SuavelyDunn : Eldar … 1751 points painted; 0 joker(s) used.
    Thoth62 : Space Marines … 1283 points painted; 2 joker(s) used.

Between us we have painted 13487.43 points in the last 8 months.
    13487.34
    13487.34

This month, I speed painted some basecoat on some figs. They aren't done, but with all the insanity of school going right now, my painting has been unfocused.

Sorry no army shot. most of them are put away since I am going to be moving soon.

2x heavy weapon squad, armed with missile launchers, 190 points.

But, since they are tabletop quality, they will work.

No update for me this month so far, but hopefully I'll have something by this weekend. Life and a new gaming computer have gotten in the way of painting, so last night, I finished basecoating the squad. The black is done, hopefully I'll get the grey down tonight, and then it's anyones guess as to when I'll get another opportunity to finish them.

Here's hoping, because I really, really don't want to have to drop out.

    Hey guys!

Well nothing from me again this month, was to busy painting bretonnians for carnage. Got them done now and I've spent this evening building a Land Raider Crusader and a Dreadnought, so I'm aiming to work on those this month.

    Cheers

    UNITS COMPLETE THIS MONTH

6 x Swooping Hawks (including Exarch with Intercept & Sky Leap skills) - 179 points

Total this month - 179 points

CURRENT ARMY POINTS - 1,951 points

BACKGROUND/THEME: Originally played Ulthwe Eldar for many years and bought the new codex and models earlier this year. Saw the "Carnage Tale of X Gamers" on Warseer and the eldar of Rob Peck. Loved the idea & scheme and this gave me the inspiration to start my army in July.

    BUILD/CONVERSION:
Not very adventurous in the conversion front so most of my figures are "out of the box".

    PAINTING:
Black outfit, blue shoulders & helmet, wings are blue & bone with green edging.

    BASING:
My friend has designed and produced in plaster a series of bases which match the gaming table we play on. Drybrushed grey, black edges with the addition of static grass plus leaf scatter.

    STILL TO DO:
    Nothing for these figures.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Low: Time taken to do the wings!
High: Tried the matt varnish on them - much better as they don't have that shiny glare in the light & you can actually make out some of the detail!

    NEXT MONTH:
Jetbike squad, plus possibly the Gravtank.
    Then again...

    Have fun!

Norsehawk: They look pretty damn good for basecoated models! Though it seems you can get away with quite a lot when it comes to IG figs, as long as they have nice bases.
Thoth: I'm sure you can them 3 coloured in the next week or so.
Heldane: No worries, you're still ahead of schedule as I recall!
SuavelyDunn: Loving those swooping hawks. The wings are absolutely gorgeous. It's very hard for me to say that when I despise Eldar so much but they really do look great!

As I may have mentioned, I am going to have to joker this month as, like Heldane, I was painting Fantasy models for Carnage Nottingham.

    For sure's on dat!

I got the grey basecoat done yesterday, as well as the three bare heads. So hopefully tonight I get the bone done for sure on the shoulderpads and helmets, and then the highlighting, details and bases should be a peice of cake.

It's too bad I can't work like this for the entire month...

Wave after Wave of Jim Reaper's Men: March 2008

Staggering on despite having lost both legs in a metaphorical motivation-for-painting kind of way, here's my seventh month's worth of stuff.

Unit 1: Infantry squad, missile launcher, grenade launcher. 83 points.

Unit 2: Sentinel, autocannon. 50 points.

Unit 3: Missile launcher team. 31.67 points.

    Unit 4: 10 Conscripts. 40 points.

TOTAL PAINTING FOR MARCH: 204.67 POINTS

TOTAL ARMY POINTS: 1406 POINTS (yes, it's a whole number this month, should keep the Mullet happy)

    BACKGROUND/THEME:

"Let's drain Jim Reaper of his last remaining will to live"

    BUILD/CONVERSION:

If you remember, last month I was planning to have a sentinel knee-deep in a swamp. This has been mostly done this month, all that remains is to paint up the base in a swampy ick kind of way that I plan to steal wholesale from McMullet.

    PAINTING:

    No changes there then.

    BASING:

Getting yet further behind. One of these days I'll have to just blitz all the bases I haven't done.

    STILL TO DO:

    The basing and swamp ick.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:

Highs: The end is almost in sight!

Lows: Good thing too - I have started talking to my Guardsmen about how much I hate them.

    PICTURES

You'll have to wait a few days for these - my camera is (I jest you not) in Svalbard with a colleague of mine. I'll update this post with pictures once it's back.

EDIT: It's back, and here they are:

    Sentinel

Conscripts and the missile launcher team

    The infantry squad

    And everything Mk VII

    NEXT MONTH:

An infantry squad, two more Stormtroopers, the last platoon command squad and oh my word a Sentinel.

Sorry, but due to a rounding error I have you on 1406.1 points. This makes me indescribably angry and unhappy.

I look forward to the pictures nonetheless.

Apologies for the delay in posting, but I've been having the access problems. Hopefully it's all fixed now.

Still, due to some colour scheme issues, mainly along the lines of that turret looks funny.... there will be a slight delay in pictures, I'll try and post some in the next day or so. This pesky work thing sucking up all my day time again.
    Have fun,

Thoth's Brotherhood of Iron: March 2008

Motiviation is dwindling, but I sense that we may be near the end! Hope at last!

    Just one unit this month.

Devastator Squad: 7 Space Marines, Preferred Enemy: Eldar, 4 Heavy Bolters. 172 points (Is this right? I don't have my codex on me...).

TOTAL PAINTING FOR MARCH: 172 POINTS

    TOTAL ARMY POINTS: 1455 POINTS

    BUILD/CONVERSION:

None to speak of. This squad is a combination of the plastic devastators and a tactical squad.

    PAINTING:

Same as usual. I'm not really done yet, but the shoulderpads are painted bleached bone, the trim on them is red, the armour is grey, and the guns are black. Metallics is also done. This more than completes my 3 colour minimum, but I've still got to fix up the slopiness, paint the freehand on the shoulders (which admittedly, isn't that hard), and do all the highlighting and shading.

    BASING:

    Also, the bases aren't done...

    STILL TO DO:

Basing, and a lot of detail stuff.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:

Highs: The army is starting to really look like a nice coherent force. I'm thrilled!

Lows: My motivation is starting to slip, but after these Devastators, I think I've only got 2 more squads to go...

    PICTURES

Not at the moment. I'll get some up tonight (which will likely be after you brits have gone to bed), provided I don't get distracted by MoH: Airborne again. (That's a sweet looking game, btw!)I'll update this post with pictures once I get them taken.

    NEXT MONTH:

A tactical squad and their rhino. I'm being ambitious. It might only be about 230 points, buts it's probably the biggest update in terms of model quantity. Which is bad considering I've only got have the squad assembled. I did start on the rhino the other day though. But I may need to revise, depending on how much work I actually get done.

    Woohoo!

I love the school holidays. No kids to sort out (other than the G/F's) and 2 weeks of uninterrupted modelling.

    Already built so far
3 * 5 terminators, 1 Land raider crusader and 1 dreadnought with plasma cannon!

Still to go, another crusader and a nother twin Lightning clawed lord to replace my one from a couple of months back (he just wasnt beefy enough )

Then all I have to do is base coat the colours for a tournament in may!

I am allowed to post a 1500 point update right McMullet? :P

    total painted this month
    -217

    Total -1414(ish)

    Lord
    Daemon weapon
    Mark of Nurgle
    Terminator armour
    combi melta
    -180

    Spawn
    -40

    STILL TO DO:

    Basing

    HIGHS AND LOWS:

Highs: Finishing my first good forgeworld model!

Lows: My motivation is going right out the window due to Exams in 3 weeks and lack of money to buy stuff( dam Conflict and 25th party being in the same month) means I have to squeeze every point.

    NExt month probably more infantry.

Shadows of Orphan VII, 13th Company / Catachan Devils, Month 9 Update

I confess, not much was done this month. No new units. However! I went back and added weathering effects to all the models I've painted so far, as well as updating the bases to last month's scheme. I figure that keeps me out of a joker for this month, heh.

There was a fourth picture, but it's blurry as hell and I don't feel like taking another one, lol.

Re: Tale of 40K Painters: Monthly update #9 and April working thread, innit

Silvereye's Eldar: March 2008 (with rubbish picture)

    UNIT 1:

    * Most of a Falcon with lots of kit (less than 200)

    UNIT 2:

    * Base coated another Falcon with lots of kit because the other one isn't finished (lots less then 200)

    OTHER STUFF

    * A Starcannon for the Wraithlord. I figured a Scatter laser wasn't a large enough gun in the BFG stakes. (+10) It also means that the Guardian Squad gets the Scatter Laser. (+10)

    Total value painted 200.

    BUILD/CONVERSION:

None, though I now have a small pile of Neodymium magnets for the heavy weapons.

    PAINTING:

Same colours use previously. I also picked out a couple of potential headlight type panels on the front of the falcon in black/purple. I figure that the Eldar are not limited to the normal human spectrum of vision being crazy advanced aliens.

    BASING:

Yay, I've decided on a basing scheme. Go me. Now all I need to do is a test base to see if it works. And apply it to the army if it does.

    STILL TO DO:

Finish Falcon 1 (still got some of the underside to finish whitening, the turret to finish, and to decide if I want to see pilots or blacked out canopies) and complete Falcon 2.

Take a competent picture of the tanks.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:

Highs: Large quantities of starships being delivered (more distractions, just what I needed.... )
Lows: Getting a dud can of spray and nearly ruining all my tanks. Fortunately the bobbles seem to brush off, and a couple of layers of paint tends to hide the ripply finish.

    PICTURES
    See thumbnail.

    THIS MONTH'S TASK
Finish the tanky goodness. And assemble the remaining 15 Dire Avengers. Completing undercoating the remaining tanks and hopefully the soon to be assembled Dire Avengers. Make and paint a test base.

Thoth62: Looking forward to the pics of the devastators. Good luck with the Tactical Squad too, might as well try and finish the Rhino as you'll still have plenty of points in the Tac squad if you don't finish it.
heldane: 1500 points? Bloody show off. Happy birthday by the way!
penguin663: Good stuff, the green on the Lord looks really good - and using the FW Ogryn as a Spawn is a good call!
Meticulous: Basing indeed! Go on then, I'm sure everyone'll let you off.
Silvereye: Looking very nice - look forward to some better pictures.

What is it with everyone managing to somehow lose their cameras this month? All very suspicious...

I've nearly finished the first flying Warrior now, only 3 to go - plus the rest. Pics tomorrow I hope!

For some reason I couldn't log on last night... I didn't take too much time to figure it out though, because it was late... So no pictures yet. (They are (somewhat) done, I swear!)

And it was late because I was busy trying to beat MoH: Airborne...

    Good game, by the way.

    I HAVE PICTURES!!!!

I remembered to take them last night after I had gone to bed, so I got up and took them. That's dedication for you!

Not very good ones, but what the hey!

First up is a front shot of the squad. As you can see, the eyes aren't done, and neither is the shoulder details, highlighting, shading or bases. So a bit of work to do yet, but it'll be done soon enough.

    And another for posterity.

    A teaser of next month.

And what's been distracting me for the last couple of weeks.

    My new baby!

    Games like MoH:Airborne, HL2 plus Ep. 1 & 2, Soulstorm. C&C3...

Some I've never played, some I haven't played in over a year... I needed to get my fix, so I hope you'll forgive me.

(BTW, that's a 22" widescreen monitor there... just in case you were wondering.)
