    Terrain

I just thought of something that hasn't been discussed yet.

I've just finished my converting my marine for the warseer chapter (obviously waiting for the colourscheme & emblem to be decided upon, here he is if you want to see him. Brother Angelus) when I realised that we haven't decided on how to base our marines.

What kind of world are they crusading on? Ash wastes, grassy plains, barren desert, snow & ice, ruined city...the list goes on. This is a minor thing but no marine can be finished without it. So I have started a poll so people can vote on their favourite landscape for our valiant chapter to do battle on.

So go ahead, vote, it's your civic duty

    Re: Terrain

With the actual colourscheme not yet decided upon, it seems a bit early deciding how to base the miniatures.
However... Since most of the suggestions use pretty bold colours, I feel that a more muted theme is appropriate as far as bases go.

I know, but my thinking is that there is already a chapter emblem thread & that's something that should probably be decided after the colourscheme is established. On the other hand, that thread has got some good ideas flowing without commiting to anything wholeheartedly.

Besides it gives people another thing to think about when designing the colourscheme, ie. There is a heavy presence of black in the forums, but TWB has already stated that black marines should be avoided. Having an ash wastes base would add the black to the mini without it needing to be in the colourscheme.

Anyway, if people feel this thread unescessary all they have to do is ignore it & eventually it'll fade away. But hopefully people can use this thread for new ideas and it may make deciding on the colourscheme easier.

As always I'm just trying to be helpful.

    Re: Terrain

Ash Wastes, Desert or the traditional Earth/Grass combo are the only options IMHO.

Remember that EVERYONE has to have the same sort of base - not everyone can model dead tyranid on runic-inscribed marble flagstones as a base, and not everyone has snow flock, green stuff and so on.

I voted for Grass/Savannah, purely because it's the most common type of base and so everyone will be able to do it. But then, ash/desert is just as simple, so that'd be fine too.

    Re: Terrain

I've just started basing my minis with some sand and pebbles, which would make it sort of desert-like, right?
Maybe I'll add some static grass, but I'm not sure yet.

Anyway, my favorite would be desert.

I agree with your reasoning for creating the thread (and have voted already).
I merely wanted to make a cautionary comment so we don't get too far ahead of ourselves.

    Re: Terrain

I also think that grass/savannah would be the most common and versatile option - also easy to create.

    Have fun,

    Re: Terrain

I would think that virtyually everyone would have access to sand. With sand+paint, any colour base is possible.

I'll wait for the colours to be decided on before voting, however I believe Snow or Desert could give a good look.

    Re: Terrain

I think snow is a bad idea. It's not very commonly used as a base, and most people will not have the materials to do it well. Desrt is fine, like you say it's just a matter of gluing sand to the base and painting it whatever colour is chosen.

However, this is still not something that everyone can do, whereas the grassy scheme can be done at various levels - from painting the base brown and gluing on flock, up the the 'Eavy metal version with painted sand and static grass, and beyond to the addition of little plants, rocks and puddles.

I voted desert but I failed to see an ash wastes option. Both are fine with me. I'm against snow or anything too leafy.

    Re: Terrain

I voted for city (ruined preferably). With that, you can have a mix of most of all the rest. In a ruined city, you would have a variety of ground types from concrete to asphalt to grass (in park or overgrown areas), ash (from past fighting), gravel (from driveways or broken building) you could have a good mix and they would all fit together so long as most people had at least some sort of "hard" ground on the base to tie it all together.
Besides with ruined city basing, it could subtly tie in with our rebuilding from the ruins of Portent.

Look ,snow gets used so rarely. And with all our blue armor, especially the ICE BLUE armor we might end up with...Snow would be sweet.

    Re: Terrain

I suppose it would look good, but how often does anybody play on a snow board? It's sort of pointless having a base that doesn't fit in. Desert/ash wastes look alright on most board types.

All my models are based on sand/grit, painted various desert/ash colours, sometimes with the occasional skull, bloodstain or other feature stuck on for variety. I actually don't have any flock or static grass, so I am conclusive proof that not everyone can easily produce a grassy base.

Fair enough. I thought everyone started out with the "PVA and green sawdust" basing method.

    Re: Terrain

Why not simply pass them through a central finishing point where base texture and warseer emblems will be done?

Easily done. Two in the US, one in Australia. Six or eight in the UK, one in Bergen, etc...

Nice dark grave/rocks, providing the colours of the model aint too dark. Snow isn't the most easy to do, so it should be avoided.

Kinda defeats the whole "everybody paints one marine" aspect of the exercise.

    Re: Terrain

I voted other, as I would like to see us fighting on a world where it's split into two main elements, Fire and Ice (for thw two main Warseer colour schemes) and an area on the homeworld full of ruins, rusted red.

Edit: Ok, i'm tired and I didn't read the poll properly . Put me down for Ash / Volcanic!

    Re: Terrain

Well, I voted snow and ice, but after a moment of clarity, I realise this is rather foolish, for the idea of completeness, and unity, I think volcanic ash and waste would look cool.

Are we allowed rocks in it, like having a marine resting on a rock? Or pipes, bits of battle rubbish and stuff?
