    Re: Terrain

I feel that should the ash be too light, it could look sort of bad, rock is dark, you don't see grey desserts of really bright sand, I just think a simple grey base could compliment a light blue scheme very well (fingers crossed on the colour choice of course).

Overall I feel this pole is pre-mature, wait until the colour is decided, then we'll have a look at the bases.

    Re: Terrain

Actually ash which has burned at a high heat turns very light grey along th edges. So if we went with black basecoat them lightened it up with a dark grey, then did the edges in SWgrey, it would look good. And you just wait till my colors win :-)

    Re: Terrain

I know about white ash, but in general, in real volcanic eruptions, when it's all said and done, it's usually the dark stuff left, that hasn't been blown away.

    Re: Terrain

Ahh, but we're voting for ash wastes, which could be anything. We should just call for the colors and let people pick out from them what they want t6o do with their bases. This would mean a properly random mix, which still fit together, ya see?

I guess so, although I would have thought the more traditional to be the esiest to impliment, also, as Wintermute's on patrol, and so is TWB, I think our convo stops here .

    Good night

Ash is so darn dull. At least give them ruins to step through.

Surely as a marine chapter they could be fighting anywhere?

    Re: Terrain

I voted for city (ruined preferably). With that, you can have a mix of most of all the rest. In a ruined city, you would have a variety of ground types from concrete to asphalt to grass (in park or overgrown areas), ash (from past fighting), gravel (from driveways or broken building) you could have a good mix and they would all fit together so long as most people had at least some sort of "hard" ground on the base to tie it all together.
Besides with ruined city basing, it could subtly tie in with our rebuilding from the ruins of Portent.

    Re: Terrain

Well, my vote is definetly on the lava/ash bases, simply because no-one uses them often enough.
it would also be quite easy for people with less time/beginners to model the ash bases, it's basically sand.... and some lava if you want to have some more so called 'bling' on the base.

    Re: Terrain

ah... for the bases. Was half asleep when I read this last night... thought you meant table-top terrain

[EDIT] voted volcanic. reckon some cracked grey/black stone bases with lava showing through from underneath would look cool

Remember, not everyone is a conversion enthusiast. I'd love to go for Tyranid corpse-infested overgrown snowy urban ruins, but it might be better to do something that everyone can do well rather than something that some of us can do brilliantly.

I agree taht somewhat painted sand is probably the best for everyone. What about giving the options of sticking on some rocks/ruins/skulls/whatever for those enthusiasts?

    Re: Terrain

That could be nice. If we said "overgrown city" or "ruined desrt city", then plain sand/grass is an option, but leaves us open for the odd flagstone, skull, or whatever to be on there too.

    Re: Terrain

Well with the volcanic bases you go up in difficulty levels, from just black sand to lava flowwith rocks + kinky source light effect.

    Re: Terrain

Simple and easily repeatable would be best. After all every Marine is going to be a little different from the others in a squad (due to paint pigments, styles, etc). So the bases will have to be the unifying factor and those should be simple.

Something dark I think, to make the blue models stand out.

And I think we really, really shouldn't go for green bases.

I concur. If we are doing the "simple" thing we should probably just go for bestial brown bases sides, drybrushed sand and spots of static grass.. i.e. the typical base.

    Re: Terrain

I'm still undecided on this... I think it really depends on what colour scheme the Marines end up with.

One idea I had for bases: Have the individual's name on it, possibly in some kind of scroll or embossed plate. I might do something that people can print out if this is agreed on.
