Nice one. I was going to paint my name on the underside of the base for identification purposes, but that would be much cooler.
Ash Wastes, Volcanic
Grassy plains, Savannah
Snow & Ice
City, ruins or intact
Jungle
Desert
Other that I haven't though of (specify in thread)

A scroll transfer perhaps? The general idea I had for naming models was put the marine name on the front of the base and the user's name/handle on the underside.Originally Posted by Zark the Damned

I thought it would be kind of neat with the decking of a starship but uniformity would be a problem I think? I voted for city/rubble/stuff -I think it has more potential for creativity if the modeler really wants to...
.
I voted for snow and ice beacuse i love snow and ice but mainly because it fits in with the current warseer theme.

I voted city, because you can concieveably have grassed & bare-earth areas within a city, but you don't as often see random masonary & urban detail on the savannah & plains.
Personally I think the more variation that is allowed within the theme, the better, because we're all going to have sligtly different bases, no matter how well co-ordinated the plans are.
As for the nameplate, something to print out would be handy, but do bear in mind that quite a few folks will no doubt want to freehand. Personally I'd like to see some kind of laurel wreath design, with (obviously) a space for the name in the middle, but seeing as how each person will have to Insert Name Here, a plaque of some sort seems most likley.
A slight shame imho (wreaths are cool), but it is more practical.

I voted cityscape, because I, much like BigJim, thought that then you can include most kinds of terrain. And it's fairly easy to make as well.
And as for having the Marine's name upon the base I think a plaque/scroll would be the best bet. It's not hard to make, and looks good. And you can fiddle around with it indefinately.
yes! having used snow flock today i love it! it rocks! and light blue being a strong feature on our colour scheme it would look really good too!Originally Posted by warlordgrubnatz

I went with grassy/plains due to the fact that everyone can get their hands on it and as some people have stated before, the bases are really going to be the unifying factor here.
As far as naming is concerned - I think practicalities mean that we should probably just write the name in skull white at the front of tha base. As nice as laurel wreaths and scrolls may be, isn't it a bit impractical to expect everyone to be able to paint that?

Once a type is decided on, can someone please post exactly how it looks on a standard model so we dont have several variations of a basic terrain type? I understand that one of the mods already suggested such a thing with the Chapter colors.
To the people going on about how everybody has grass and such and it being the most common keep in mind this... not everybody has static grass/flock, some of us choose not to buy that stuff, and this isn't fantasy, so a green table isn't as commong.
Sand on the other hand is plentiful, go to the beach, a gardening or building place etc and get some, it's worth it. In fact get as much as you can get away with, it's useful for lots of things.
Ash wastes and desert are pretty easy to do and such, mainly drybrushing and such. Not to mention it gives you a chance to sculpt the base to an extent.
I'm a ruins type myself, if only because it will allow for the most variety.
Scroll of marine name on the front of the base, owner on either the back or bottom.
Given the results of the poll so far, I'd say some form of *city in the ash wastes* or *city ruined by volcano* is likely to please the majority.

That sounds good. Ruined city in the ash plains is probably best, as long as everyone has some ruins or some ash then we're sorted. If they're all the same colour (dark grey I s'pose), then there could even be a mix of both in a single squad.

McMullet's avatar has poorly hands and so few postings will be written and they may be a little terse.
Reckoning Codex Grey drybrushed over with Fortress Grey/Skull White.
Attach static grass with superglue to bleach it or drybrush it Bleached Bone to make it look deadish.
Hope that helps for the more urban look.
If going urban with bases might I suggest that the rim of the base should in that case be painted black or dark grey. If painting it like Codex Grey then it'll look dirty and ruin the rest of the model... Just my 2p.

I think a good colour to start with would be a 50/50 mix of fortress grey and chaos black. A nice dark base will complement the very bright marines we have.
I'm thinking that ruined urban is the best way to go, obviously it's the most popular on the poll but it also opens up the whole gamut of bases, from paving slabs and industrial flooring to rubble and bits of ruined building.

I voted ash wastes, as it should be an easy one for everyone and will contrast with the armour colours nicely.
Saying that so would a nice grey urban base, with bits of cut up sprue, now everyone has some of that lying around.
Eithers good with me.

I voted desert simply because, nice as ruined cities and ash wastes are, some of us aren't up to making them look good (me for instance). Desert is nice and easy, but still allows people to put in more scenic bases if they're able.
