Space marine chapter : the sons of Vulcain

    Hi guys!
Warhammer is to me some kind of family business!
If I command an IG regiment an some sisters of battles, my daugther pays attention on Taus and my second son on a Space Marine chapter, "the Sons of Vulcain"...

The work on the Marines begin five or six years ago and my project was to built a detachement without major conversion, using the too many "old awfully painted figs" lost in my spare boxes and we turn to a very simple scheme of black and green. The sons of Vulcain could be a mysterious chapter the Salamanders and spending centuries in the unknown to pay some faults.

The basic army without the bike squadron :

The upcoming of the Baneblade in my own regiment need some improvement in the other family armies ans I turn back to the SM to provide renforcement and we decided to uprgade the sons of Vulcain to a full mechanised unit based on the universal Rhino. As I don't think it could be very interesting to show simple figs finished using speed painting (most of you are better painters than I will ever become!), this post will only concerne the conversions on the chapter's armor.

[CENTER]Step one : the universal warhorse

The tank remains very close to the original, but I cannot built any kit strait of the box and I wasn't happy with the model's exhaust pipes and symetrical layout. I try to improve (just my opinion!) the model delaying the two frontal ones and I push a bit more to a box shaped tank adding two metal boxes on the rear fender.
The painting and marking remain in the Sons of Vulcain ascetic way : plain green with only the chapter insignia (taken from the blood angels), platoon number and immo.

The APC use aerial recognition symbols on the roof doors for HQ, Elite and troops :

    All comments are welcome!
    Regards

i like the rhino, i was looking at it for 5 minutes before reading the post and realising what wasnt quite right about it. the pait scheme looks easy and very effective, im doing something similar with a dark shade of green and boltgun.

interesting chapter symbol. Looks sort of like an abstract volcano which is fitting for a salamanderish chapter such as this.

I'm happy you see a volcano! It was the original idea, but I didn't want to freehand paint it on 50 marines!

    Step two

After we found a Rhino design, we turn to something more heavy, and add a landraider on the battlegroup. One more time it should be only lightly converted to show a very old marks, something intermediate between the FW preheresy model and the final one.

The tank lacks the fenders used on the actual model and the tracks roll al around the hull just like the very old GW plastic ancestor.

If the side turrets are classical (maybe an upgrade?) the Linked heavy bolters are fitted in a lower position to reduce the vehicle high and the tanks carry simplified rangefinder and vision devices.

Eventually the exhaust are smaller than the original...

    I hope you like it!

    mochi on miniature cost.

I will post some of them if I can make better pics, the SoV marines fight in a lot of battlesduring the last three years and their battle suits are a bit damaged!

Thanks! The conversion is rather easy, the only point you have to be carefull is the fact you have to built some extra linjs for the tracks.

Some progress today : the week-end has been dedicated to uparmourig...

Step three : improvised armor for Rhinos

During the Ceracuse ans Teth VI campaigns, the Sons of Vulcain was invovlved in vicious street fighting and try to improve the armor of their Rhinos against RPG, demolition charges and other close combat weapons. The first attemps use local ressource like piece of armor cutted on wrecks, spare parts or even sand bags.

The first exemple is dedicated to the WW2 US sherman, the sand bags are fitted only on the front of the hull, but I think I'll add some side protection.

Another WW2 inspiration but more in the british or even polish style Shermans : the use of imperial track links taken from supplies depots or even from wrecks. The tracks lengh could have been welded directly on the main armour but maybe fitted on improvised hooks. One more time the system protect only the front of the APC Rhino, but it sould be very effective in combinaison with the massive dozer blade!

Both system are far from perfect (even very easy to built from modeller point of view!) and the Sons of Vulcain work on more ellaborate design!
    To be continued

You've got a neat looking army there, don't put yourself down about your painting. Also the Rhinos and Land Raider look great. A big thumbs up from me.

Re: Space marine chapter : the sons of Vulcain

Well it is time to go to much more ellaborated systems. After the first attemps to increase the protection, the SoV techs use local metal wire to cover the rontal arc of the tanks.

This device seems to be better designated as it provides a spaced armour effect, very useful against hand weapons. Many intermediate design could be seen on TethVI :

Next step will turn on more sophiticated réactive armor and support vehicles...

Certainly don't put your painting down. They look really good and i love the conversion to the rhinos. They remind of the article when the very first rhino came out (it was in the compendium) where they'd gather together lots of really cool converted rhinos (included an early predator conversion), looking forwards to seeing more. I'd love to see some of the infrantry too.

    Thank you very much!
Regarding painting skills, I just point the fact I'm not a real figurinist, I'm very impressed when I see some wonderfull figs, but I cannot spend hours on a single character, and try to achieve some kind of "speed painting". I like much more the vehicles and concentrate on!

I like the early Rhino very much in fact, and I work for some years on different kind of upgrade to depict old vehicles reworked by isolated marines chapter or even SoB. I've made 6 or 7 conversions in this way and I would show them in Warseer if I can found time enough to complete!

Do you know if there are pics of the early conversions you speak about? I would be very happy to see!

your painting dosen't look to bad even though you said its not brilliant.
even if your paintings not Brilliant the conversions more than make up for it, great work!

It's time to add some more support to the Rhino, and I especially like the Vindicator!
When I begin my work on the model The new plastic model wasn't on the market but I found the old metal parts in my spare box and add them on the new hull. I only have to built a new roof and change the front :

Eventually the Terminator in assault config. One more time it was the old metal fig - I like tem! - I just add 1mm plastic part under the feet of the marines cause the metal figs are a bit small compare with the nex plastic models.

Not very fluff, I know, but I add some kind of teleportation signal, designed to be launched directly from a Thunderhawk or wessel in altitude. Ususally I use it as an objective for specific battle. The main body comes from a Tau Devillfish...

Don't worry : just the Predator, the Wirlwind and the Razorback this week!
It a good way to let all details mobile : with five bases you can use all the versions you want on the battlefield...

    And thanks for comments.
